With just five gameweeks left until the end of the season, we thought we’d begin the run-in with a weekly look at the chase for first place in the Fantasy Football Scout league. As many of you know, the top dog in our league last season- a certain Jon Reeson- also came first in the overall standings in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Can our leaders replicate the success of Jon’s all-conquering Westfield Irons squad of 2009-2010? Here’s our top five contenders:

Chris McGurn

Morons FC

Fantasy Football Scout Ranking #1 Overall FPL Ranking #2

Form & History
Chris has shown fantastic form straight from the off this season, having been inside the top 1,000 since gameweek 3. Sitting in second place overall for the last six weeks now, he is currently just 16 points off top spot.

This is his FPL third season and he’s finished comfortably inside the top 10,000 in each of the previous two Fantasy campaigns. The guy is a consistent performer.

Last Week’s Score 84 pts
Fielded five double gameweek players, including captain Robin Van Persie. Faith in Leighton Baines proved fruitful, with the Everton man equalling Van Persie’s 13 point haul, despite playing a game less. Doubling up on Chelsea’s defence was a sensible move, unfortunate not to pay dividend, while Frank Lampard’s return of 11 points was somewhat overshadowed by the performances of his team mates.

Gameweek 34 Preview
There are currently two double gameweek players (Asimir Begovic and Jamie O’Hara) in the squad, though that may well increase before the weekend. Chris is not averse to a points hit, having taken one in no less than eight gameweeks so far this season.

Big guns include Lampard at home to West Ham, Nani and Wayne Rooney squaring up to Baines’ Everton at Old Trafford, Robin Van Persie travelling to Bolton and Ashley Young home to Stoke.

Chris Prentice

MincePies

Fantasy Football Scout Ranking #2 Overall FPL Ranking #8

Form & History
Chris had an up and down first half to the Fantasy season; he finished the opening week of the season inside the top 35,000 (despite having Mauro Boselli in his gameweek 1 first XI) and has never been ranked lower. This second half of the season is where he’s really hit top form; gameweek 19 saw him break the top 1000 and he’s steadily climbed the rankings, breaking the FPL top 10 a couple of gameweeks back.
This is only his second FPL season, though a finish inside the top 20,000 last season was clearly an indication that he‘d taken to the game quickly.

Last Week’s Score 97 Points
Six double gameweek players filled the starting XI, with captain Didier Drogba hauling in 44 points. Ignoring Lampard and Malouda, Chris went for David Luiz as his only other Chelsea cover. Van Persie and Nasri came good, though only Ben Foster returned much from his defence.

Gameweek 34 Preview
At present, only Robert Huth has a double gameweek up next, suggesting he’ll need to ring the changes. Having taken point hits in five gameweeks (with four of them have produced a green arrow) a couple of trades look likely.

Main men are Drogba at home to West Ham, Nani facing Everton, Van Persie and Nasri travelling to Bolton and both Stewart Downing and Ashley Young facing Stoke at Villa Park.

Patrick Tyrrell

Scalachis Allstars

Fantasy Football Scout Ranking #3, Overall FPL Ranking #13

Form & History
Firmly entrenched inside the top 10,000 since gameweek 4, Patrick had a few red arrows until a bumper score of 130 in gameweek 23 rocketed him into the top 100, where he has been ever since. Broke the top 10 in gameweek and held steady, only to slip slightly this week.

This is his FPL fourth season and, having never been beyond the top 100,000 before, Patrick must be getting nosebleeds by now.

Last Week’s Score 83 Pts
Opted for 6 double gameweek players, with four of them defenders, though it was only Ben Foster and Roger Johnson that served up decent returns. Robin Van Persie and captain Frank Lampard combined for a 35 point haul. Leighton Baines’ 13 points were much-needed and Peter Odemwingie’s goal against Chelsea made up for the points dropped at the Hawthorns by David Luiz.

Gameweek 34 Preview
Kevin Davies is the only double gameweek player so far, though with three points hits in the last six gameweeks, changes could be afoot for Patrick’s squad.

Big guns include Lampard and Luiz hosting the Hammers, Nani and Baines squaring up at Old Trafford and Van Persie at Bolton. Elsewhere, Charlie Adam and Joey Barton line up against one another and Odemwingie looks to continue his recent hot streak away to Spurs.

Sean og Connolly

Cara Finla

Fantasy Football Scout Ranking #4, Overall FPL Ranking #20

Form and History
Sean climbed into the top 10,000 in gameweek 5 and, since then, has dropped outside that rank for just four gameweeks. One red arrow in fourteen from gameweek 18 onwards saw him progress into the top 10 in gameweek 26 and, until last week, that’s where he’s been. This is his fourth FPL season, with the previous one being his first inside the top 100,000, he‘s made huge progress this time round.

Last Week’s Score 64pts
Only 3 double gameweek players and no goalkeeper was fundamental to the drop down the rankings. Captain Lampard came relatively good, Van Persie added 13 points, but Johan Djourou returned only two points. His three Man United players done little away to Newcastle, through Patrice Evra at least grabbed a clean sheet. Ashley Young chipped in with a vital 8 points, too.

Gameweek 34 Preview
At present, only Robert Huth has a double gameweek on the horizon but after last week’s fall, you’d expect some transfers in. Sean has only taken a points hit on four occasions, though, so is a fairly cautious Fantasy player. Wayne Rooney joins Nani at home to Everton, Lampard takes on old club West Ham, Ashley Young hosts Stoke and Andy Carroll has a plum home tie with Birmingham.

Utkarsh Dalmia

Team Zophar

Fantasy Football Ranking #5, Overall FPL Ranking #23

Form & History
Utkarsh made a sensational start to the FPL season, breaking the top 100 by gameweek 4 but after a spate of red arrows, dropped out the top 1,000 by gameweek 16. Six weeks later, though, he was back and since gameweek 26 has been back in the top 100 comfort zone.

This is his second FPL season, with a finish inside the top 5,000 last time round hinting at the Fantasy pedigree to come.

Last Week’s Score 80pts
A mammoth twelve point his proved costly here, though a healthy 46 points from his three-man Arsenal contingent, including captain Van Persie, certainly helped balance things out. Didier Drogba’s 22 points made up for the disappointment of John Terry and David Luiz carding four points each, and ever-reliable Ben Foster cam good in goal.

Gameweek 34 Preview
Roberth Huth is joined by Wayne Hennessey as the two current double gameweeks names in the squad, but will Utkarsh continue a points-hit spree that has seen him shed 20 in the last 6 gameweeks? Chelsea’s home tie with West Ham looks good for Drogba and the two centre-halves, Nani and Wayne Rooney play Everton, but to hold onto the Gunners trio Walcott, Nasri and Van Persie as Arsenal visit the Reebok is a test of nerve.

However….

As mentioned above, this article will feature the top 5 in the Fantasy Football Scout league but the last couple of days have seen a new entry that will join us this weekend; the leader of our Scout Members league and the current world number four. If he’d joined up last week, this fellow would be sitting in second place on our leader board. And the guy has form. Here’s the lowdown:

Kevin Havelock

Beyond Havoc

Fantasy Football Scout Ranking N/E Overall FPL Ranking #4

Form & History
Kevin had lost 16 points in hits by gameweek 7 but, in spite of this, found his way into the top 100 by gameweek 11 and has been there ever since. He’s been in the top 10 for the last 10 weeks straight and has continued his tactic of hits, with 24 points coming off his tally in the last five gameweeks alone.

This is his third campaign, with the previous two finishes being outside the top 100,000; it’s fair to say this has been a season beyond all expectations.

Last Week’s Score 99pts
Six double gameweek players negated the eight point hit, particularly with Florent Malouda hauling in 22 points. Two Chelsea defenders done little, while captain Van Persie and Nasri came good for the Gunners. Leighton Baines boosted his score with 13 points and Rafael Van der Vaart’ s performance at the Lane proved crucial.

Gameweek 34 Preview
At present, there are no double gameweek players in the squad but his penchant for points hits will surely sway Kevin here. Surprisingly, there’s no Man United players at all, but three Chelsea, as Malouda, Cole and Luiz face West Ham. With none of our other contenders currently holding Spurs players, this weekend could be crucial, as Van der Vaart is joined by Gareth Bale for a home game with West Brom. Andy Carroll squares up to Birmingham at Anfield and Aleksander Kolarov travels to out-of-sorts Blackburn.

    My red arrow-marked XI:
    Begovic
    Walker, Baines, Luiz
    Nani, Adam, Fabregas, VDV
    Dembele, RVP (C), Drogba

This involves Nasri -> Van der Vaart for no hit, 'Confirm transfers'?

    Adam, Mereiles or Walcott out?

    Drogba bench material?

    RVP or Walters captain?

Walcott could so easily rip it up vs Bolton.

Derogba will be on the bench for sure, why should I play him?

I really fancy a punt on Walters.

im not sure about walcott tbh. but im sure u shudnt be taking adam out. pick one out of walcott and meireles. i said walcott just because he has worse fixtures than meireles.

20 minutes is enough for a drogba goal i reckon, atleast i would surely play him even if he was guaranteed to be on the bench.

i was going to get walters until i saw his shots on target stats. always gets only 0,1 or 2 shots on target per game. also see http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2011/04/22/follow-the-leader-the-fpl-scout-league/comment-page-10/#comment-1581591

Okay I agree about Adam tbh. It's a straight up choice between them two. Might well get rid of the other next week for Yaya so who offers the most potential this week?

Not interested in people maybe (at best) getting 5 points when I could be getting double figures on the bench potentially.

There's just an instinct I have about Walters this week, I've seen the logic against him but something is telling me he could hit 20. Vs wolves and Villa he must get goals the form stoke are in (9 goals scored in the last 2 games vs team outside the top 5), he's the main beneficiary of the service, he's full of confience and form and he's OOPing.

i never watch liverpool games so i cant tell u much about meireles. but liverpools fixture is far superior to arsenals.

im benching nani in my team with the same logic that you wanna bench drogba.

i really wanted walters too. but a walters goal is usually going to be an etherington assist. and etherington doesnt need to score to get some baps. plus set pieces and chalkboards do it for me.

But a very shaky Bolton defense vs Walcott's pace is surely a deadly combination? The only question is whether Walcott starts. And Mereiles will be without Caroll which may remove a big potential assist magnet now he's playing deeper?

Nani is likely to start, Drogba will almost certainly be benched. That's the difference for me.

I'm going with my gut on Walters and just hope it pays off but reckon Ethers will get a decent haul too.

According to a couple of reports predicting team-sheets Ivanovic and Boswinga were named, however other named Luiz so it remains to be seen. May be speculation but you never know with crazy Carlo.

It wouldn't surprise me given he is terrible at defending. I see him playing midfield by the end of next season.

If Luiz, Drogba and Nani don't play then almost everyone will be up the creek without a paddle.

As long as you have three subs who WILL play, then your OK.

If Carlo doesn't play Drogba this week though then the Chelsea fans wil lynch him (I just spent 11 hours with a Chelsea fan, and he knows his onions).

What I don't want is a 1 point wonder though... Luiz as a defender is less likely to be subbed so he's fine to start, but Drogba may well come on so I'm reluctant to start him. Nani will start I reckon.

Should do, I'm a Fulham fan and Hughes doesn't rotate much and Pantsil seems pretty out of favour so I'd expect Baird to continue at RB and Salcido at LB. Plus Salcido always fancies a shot from range and he has a decent cross on him so you never know

Need to flog either Nasri or Nani
leaning towards Nani as my main rival doesn't have him so if he has a stormer its not like my rival will push on, can see Arsenal doing well this week and hopefully Nasri will contribute towards that!

Nani frees up cash to get VDV for this double too.

Is this start risk Nani who has never scored under 5 for two consecutive GWs he's been fit for since November, or start risk Nani who is the highest point scorer in the game or start risk Nani who will play ahead of Giggs who will be rested for the CM role midweek and Park who will most likely play in all 4 big games united have coming up so is unlikely to start this weekend?

And Adam is a player who just keeps giving. I've considered selling him and I just can't do it. Those fixtures don't lie, those BPs don't lie, his penatly taking and free kick scoring and brilliant corner taking abilities don't lie and finally he's got to come good at some point surely?

I'm a big anti-Lampard manager and if I had to make that choice he'd be on my bench tbfh. However Gyan is the other one to go with is you don't want to ditch Lamps because sunderland can't score for Toffee right now.

I've got Carroll in my 11 at the moment, but if he fails to play my subs are Walcott, R Johnson, and Enrique-who may not play/have crap fixtures.

given this, is it worth taking a 4pt hit to change Walcott to Jarvis?

reasonable chance that if not Carroll then Walcott can deliver 6pts. To achieve this Jarvis would have to score 10 over two games and while he is consistent, you could not hope for much more. Would you still want him after the dgw or would it be better to take a hit if you choose to on next dgw?

        Cheers for the reply licscalders,

Isn't Walcott unlikely to start though? If I thought he'd start I probably wouldn't take the hit.

Jarvis has a decent run in, so I'd probably keep him.

I would expect him to start and have him as first sub if Carroll does not play. Any info I gained from a casual glance at squad sheet info led me to believe he will be in. If both do not start that would be a major letdown for me.

    Morning lads,

Would you transfer out Bent for Zamora with a 4-pt hit?

Thanks Lieutenant) The other was Nasri to Van der Vaart

Looking at his form this season, I see it way too risky to give Bent the armband - his returns are too inconsistent, which is why I'm also worried about him doing nothing even if Villa win.

Whereas I picture Zamora getting 2 goals and a bonus from the double.

But it was a close one so your response tilted it (just!) towards sticking with Bent for another week

Do my bench choices/order look right?
(I have had a knack of being massively wrong lately)

    Al Habsi (Foster)
    HUTH BAIRD Luiz (2:Walker 3:R.Johnson)
    ETHERINGTON Nani VdV Lampard(c) (1:Adam)
    RvP ZAMORA Odemwingie
    5.3m

I have used my 2 free transfers and since I have 4 DGWs it is probably not worth unbalancing the squad to bring in a 3rd Fulham (Dempsey) for the DGW.

    Thanks for any assurances!

It's a really tight call on who to bench, Odemwinge or Adam for me there. Think Adam has potential to score higher but may also give you two while Odem is more likely to return a steady 6.

Ordinarily I would be more likely to bench Odemwingie playing away to Adam at home, but I had him benched in GW30-32 and it only cost me 33pts. Plus Adam has the injury cloud - even though he is fairly sure to play. I might have switch Adam and Odemwingie after that musing...

Then there is Walker at home too. Though their cleansheet record recently is poor, so less worried about that decision.

I can understand youre reluctance to bench Odem. Reckon Adam might just come good this week though. Newcastle aren't scrapping like Wigan so Blackpool may pick up a result and Adam will no doubt be behind it. However Spurs may be tired from midweek.

I'd still say Adam has higher potential polarisation while odem is likely to be a steady 6.

Don't bother with Walker, may be rotated for Cuellar, Stoke on top form are likely to score.

That headline completely disagrees with the body of the text.

Carlo is referring to Torres, not Drogba, FFS.

"Maybe I can use some rotation to maintain the players' freshness," the Italian said. "It wouldn't be easy to leave Drogba out, but there's a chance we could leave him out on Saturday.

"We started with Torres against [Manchester] City. We won the game when Didier came on.

Bolton who conceded 5 at the weekend? RVP who scores in almost every away game for Arsenal with the best away form in the league?

And Arsenal are very strong away. See a nice high scoring game there. 3-2 Arsenal.

It was not. I reckon he will start the rest of the games in the run-in and his form is good so is worth holding on to. He solves my benching crisis if nothing else this week. I did Beckford to Sturridge, and am likely to do Mereiles to Walters before bed.

I would indeed. As I've said elsewhere I can see Adam either getting 2 or double figures, just can't quite tell which one. He's a bit of a risk but one worth taking because he has such high potential for points wheras the other two are doubts to start.

                Wilshere -> Walters

Baines although reckon both will get 2 max.

wilshire to walters and bench who from front players?

                  i was thinking chicarito --> zamore (c)
(would love to know if he is playing)

Bench Hernandez or Gyan. Zamora should start both games but will unlikely to last the 90 in either. That transfer also works though.

I wouldn't be so sure if he only get thirty minutes. Staying up could depend on goal difference this year and West Ham wont want to shift a lot of goals.

Says you who had been calling everyone else mad for even suggesting Drogba will start (I agree).

Don't fold to the pressure now, stick to your guns. RVP on the bench show just how crazy your thinking is atm.

If RVP is the only option don't do it. Do you really want a probable one point wonder in your team? And if he does come on do you think he'll reach double figures as a sub? I don't.

Sturridge looked fearsome vs West Ham, watched him on MOTD and could have comfortably had 4. He was getting in great positions, getting great shots away and generally looking in top form. Fixtures may be a tad tougher but he looked unplayable from the highlights vs West Ham.

Also I want someone to last the season now and he has better fixtures afterwards. With Zamora still only recently back from a major injury, and his reurn to 'form' included 2/3 goals vs Blackpool at home which mean little to me. Also just never really fancied him as a fantasy prospect.
