There’s just one Premier League fixture on this Easter Sunday, as Arsenal visit the Reebok Stadium. With title rivals Manchester United and Chelsea both securing three points yesterday, this of course falls into the ‘must win’ category for the Gunners.

As for Bolton, the 43 points they’ve already accrued this season means that they don’t really have a lot to play for. However, after suffering a major humiliation at Wembley last week, it’s perhaps pride more than anything else that’s at stake for the home side.

The Dugout Discussion chatroom is open, and the team news is in…

Bolton XI: Jaaskelainen, Steinsson, Cahill, Knight, Robinson, Lee, Elmander, Muamba, Taylor, Sturridge, Kevin Davies

Arsenal XI: Szczesny, Sagna, Djourou, Koscielny, Clichy, Song, Wilshere, Walcott, Fabregas, Nasri, van Persie

The Wanderers welcome back in-form striker Daniel Sturridge, who was cup-tied for the Stoke game, and Matty Taylor earns a start in midfield. Jack Wilshere comes back in after being rested in the North London derby, with Abou Diaby making way.

Indeed. How was the match, i didn't see it? How were RVP and Cesc? Just saw Arsene's interview, same old rubbish, "difficult to swallow, they played a cup match etc... blah blah blah." Still love the man though and want him to stay, just frustrated.

Funnily enough no. Although we've beaten you 8 games on the trot i think now, the pressure if off your mob, so it could bring the best out of them. They clearly don't thrive under pressure!

Really not getting the Arsenal love in of Wenger still.

However, get rid of Pat 'Reaction Lenses' Rice and you may get a team drilled differently I suppose.

          Something has to give.

They were two of the better ones.

There was a rare Chamakh sighting, but the only thing he did of note was clobber Paul Robinson.

Djourou had a shocker, which has been coming since his return form injury. Dunno if he's been rushed back, or just one of the ones more heavily affected by title-run-in-itis. Either way, he did his best Squillaci impression.

Nasri wasted chances, then they scored at the end, when it really didn't matter anymore, ala NZogbia last year. Rvp was really up for it, Cesc played OK, again we looked more dangerous when Arshavin came on

Where are we going wrong though!? It's baffling. RVP is scoring goals. Our defence, up until the last few games has been pretty solid. I honestly don't know who we need to sign in the summer. I think the tactics are all wrong at the moment.

I think it's finally put the 'If Fabs and Rvp had been playing we'd have won' argument to bed. Injuries aren't to blame for Arsenal's lack of success in the last 6 years, Wenger's purchases and tactical naivety are imo.

The one mistake he ALWAYS makes is, taking of Walcott when we are leading by a goal in the last 20 minutes. Pure stupidity, always happens.

Some and some. Wenger buys talent very well, but doesn't seem to be able to pick up hardened leaders/winners.

People have began to criticise Arsenal's style and attacking recently, which is silly. we've played like this for years, it isn't like suddenly we get to March/April and team remember how to park the bus. it's confidence.

Arsenal's title challenege last year was badly dented by injuries, this season it's just been a lack of belief.

We've also been on the end of some horrible reffing recently. that's not to say it's cost us the league, but has seriously dented it. At least that penalty today didn't cost us.

I disagree, we've had some horrendous decisions go against us since December -

                  - Rooney penalty at OT
                  - N'Zogbia dive for penalty against Wigan
                  - handball by McArthur at Wigan
                  - Lee Bowyer committing several red card offenses at Brum (retrospective action taken)
                  - Louis Saha's offside goal for Everton
                  - two dodgy pens at Newcastle
                  - Arshavin's late disallowed goal vs Sunderland
                  - Kuyt's dodgy penalty in the 270th min
                  - RvP's disallowed goal against Sp*rs
                  - Sturridge dive today

granted, we probably would have thrown it away anyway, but we've been on the receiving end badly in the last few months. the only decision I can think of that has gone our way was the one in the CC final, and that hardly matters anyway.

            Absolutely.

            Some thoughts:

            1. Despite proclamations of 'bulding a team' and investing in a solid and young foundations, you are incredibly threadbare as a squad in so many areas.

The goalkeeping situation is a case in point: Yes, Ches is a good keeper, but his abilities were stumbled into after the failure and injury of your other keepers. There was nothing proactive like Wenger going into the transfer market and saying 'I need a top, top class keeper' which is what SAF and Utd will do this Summer. Instead, Arsenal stumbled upon Ches who has done a job for them. Doubt he's the world beater needed though.

            2. Similarly, you main striker is made of glass and doesn't play enough games. When he is he's immense. When he's not, who is world class in support? Chamakh?

            3. Get your head around Fabregas and either get rid or otherwise stop pandering to him.

You're being very harsh on Chesney. he's one of the most talented goalkeepers in the league.

Chamakh proved he's very able cover when RvP is missing for a length of time. he's just no impact sub.

                Read what I said again.

Its not about Chesney's ability, it is about the manner in which Arsenal stumbled into that ability.

He could be top class, but if in doubt, and if you had the money, why would you put something like that to chance?

one thing wenger deserves credit for is song and szczesny. he stuck to his guns and didn't give in to the pressure to buy a holding mid and a goalkeeper. if he did he would have stunted the development of these 2 players which looking at them now would have been criminal.
his side is still looking down on man city and tottenham. both of whom have spent billions more and got no further.

I was looking at transfer history a while ago, Wenger has spent off the top of my head 250 million in charge of Arsenal, while Redknapp has spent 205 million.

http://www.transferleague.co.uk/ Those figures are rough and could be a little off.

God they've bought a lot of dross- I guess the fact that all of his transfers are under 20 million means they go under the radar if the players are flops.

Criticising the signing of Woodgate isn't too far from the signing of Hargreaves. Both are exceptional players who were exceptionally unfortunate.

Song has been dreadful for about three months though now. Not entirely sure why Wenger has asked him to get further forward this season, he was much better last year playing a much more defensive role.

Exactly. I've thought about this and i think it's because Song commits a lot of clumsy fouls. And with our record of defending set pieces, i think Wenger would prefer the fouls to be committed higher up the pitch.

He hasn't asked him to get forward. I've seen interviews after games where Wenger has laughed off and grimaced about Song's galavanting into the box.
Although he's scored afew important goals, I wouldn't let him pass the halfway line. West Brom at home is the best example of us basically having no midfield cover.

an easy excuse but injuries and constantly rushing back for games like barcelona hasn't helped song. with diaby injured a lot and wenger's apparent loss of trust in denilson i'd hazard a guess that song has played quite a bit when ideally he'd still be recovering

He does deserve a lot of credit. I feel sorry for him because i look at the team and i can't understand how/why we keep conceding late goals, i don't think he knows either. I've never seen a team do it so many times in one season before.

As much of a cliche as it is, I really think it's just a psychological barrier. IMO had they beaten Brum in the CC then they would at least be fighting hard for the league title, as their players would now know what it means to win a trophy and that would spur them on and revitalise their self-belief.

Three premiership players that could sort Arsenal out

Jose Enrique (he's going somewhere this summer, suprised if they dont bid)

That's exactly why it's not pointless. When Song is injured/on international duty, Tiote can cover.

Tiote's African too though, so wouldn't be as much help, but you get my drift.

You could sign Scott Parker. When West Ham get relegated, in spite of his wonderful performances this season, he'll be available for a reduced price, provided you can fight off the competition from Real, Inter and Bayern...

A Parker/Wilshere midfield duo would be perfect. They'd both try really, really hard.

              Just hope you're right.

I just wouldn't see Utd or Chelsea taking that risk and I think that's what sets them apart from Arsenal.

We have been lucky with Hart. But note: he started the season ahead of Given, so it was a premeditated, logical decision that raised a few eyebrows at first.

Chesney has been an afterthought, albeit a surprisingly effective one.

Doesn't matter how they got a good goalie they now seem to have one.
Don't forget it took United a good bit to replace Schmichael when he left.

And they've learnt their lesson based on what went wrong as a result. Fergie admitted that not bringing in VDS earlier was one of his great mistakes in football.

6 years sans trophy suggests Wenger has learnt very little.

P.S. I'm bookmarking this for when Ches drops the inevitable clanger at the Emirates next week followed by a 3m offer from Juventus for him being accepted by Wenger who decides that Abou Diaby is more than suited to life between the sticks.... 😉

I think Wenger blooded him sooner than he wanted to, but ultimately saw him as the future.

Wenger tried to get Schwarzer last summer, but failed (and can probably take blame for that). That move was obviously for no more than to hold the place until Chesney was ready.

I think you're also wrong about united or Chelsea taking that risk - United bring young players through all the time, they just have loads of winners to educate them and help them through.
Arsenal don't have that because the invincibles didn't have the longevity that the likes of Scholes and Giggs do, so didn't have the chance to pass that winning mentality on.

Maybe..Mistakes have been not snapping up Given 3 years ago, not pouncing on the opportunity to buy Alonso the summer before he nearly led Pool to the title and was out of favour (Rafa B - what a knob), and not buying a striker to support RvP, Eduardo was unlucky but it has been 3 years now. bendy and chamakh, christ.
Also, not just blatantly firing Rosicky and giving his wages towards a decent charity is a crime not just against Gooners, but against humantiy

it's also a nasty way of criticising a player's lack of composure.

he's not a great crosser, but then he's not really a winger. He's a forward who plays in a wide role. His whole career he's been trained to run at goal, not at the by-line.

Having said that, working on his crossing couldn't harm.

his champions league goal against away at shakthar? this year shows he doesn't really need too much else. who else runs 70 yards and passes it into the corner, even if that's mainly down to his pace.

Most footballer have a 'football brain' though, whatever that means. Nothing Walcott has ever done has convinced me that he actually knows what he's doing on a football pitch.

tevez has gone. i hazard a guess that a more sophisticated version of this conversation happened when tevez went awol over christmas: "shut your trap and play until the end of the season and we'll let you go" sudden turnaround then buying dzeko makes it hard to believe anything else happened.

                Tevez = dead cert.

I buggu'd that in January when they signed Dzeko.

He just wants to go to Real Madrid and win the Champions League home to Argentina and see his daughters, then give up football and play in his folk band.

On the bench instead of Gibbs. We need to be able to have a strong enough squad to leave out Wilshere/Ramsey every so often. Can't rely on them to start every game as they'll burn out. Be nice to rotate a bit and not have to bring in Denilson

Depends what sort of books you like I suppose. All have good points. Gibbon is pretty hardcore, Goldsworthy pretty readable and Man gives a decent overview of the chap himself.
The fictional stuff is cracking if you like that type of thing, it's well written and well researched.

          Factual
Gibbon. E. 1996 The History of the Decline and Fall of the Western Roman Empire Vols.1 & 2
Goldsworthy. A. 2009 How Rome Fell: Death of a Superpower
Herbert. W (can't remember the year or find my book) Attila, King of the Huns.
Man. J. 2010. Attila the Hun

Fictional (a good romp of a read)
A trilogy by William Napier. Attila, The Gathering of the Storm and The Judgement.

those book club people brought some books to my work the other day, one of which was 'the tiger than came to tea'

i nearly had a tear in my eye

had forgotten all about this book but as soon as i saw it i went straight back to my early primary school years in a flash

              love to reminisce

man utd to play barcelona in the final and the wembley pitch is such a shambles yet again that barcelona aren't able to play their game and destroy man utd like 2 years ago, instead man utd hold them and hernandez goes on to score a late winner. man utd having beaten arguably the best team ever are hailed as the best team ever and questions are raised whether hernandez is actually better than messi. we know rooney is but is hernandez as well? the man utd smugness reaches epidemic levels on here and there is a mass exodus from the ABU population. ferguson retires in the glory to become a whiskey breeder in aberdeen and giggs hangs up his boots too after a glorious finale and buys a cottage in aberystwyth with imogen thomas. scholes retires too and persudes gary neville away from his impending media career to join him on a surprise hip hop career as the duo try and break the west coast hip hop scene in the US.
meanwhile i get bored, wonder why i bothered with this post in the first place (it was meant to be just a warning about the wembley pitch ruining a huge occasion) and press submit comment

HA! I wasn't gone that long. A month or so at most.

It was a lot quieter a few years ago. No members section, no signing up to the site, no contributors besides Mark, there wasn't even pages on the comments section, they just scrolled down for ages until the next post.

Wasn't as much wumming, no ABUs or Jerkirles. It was a simpler time...

Obviously all the scout team rank right up there, but they generally don't give out much advice, whereas I've had several great discussions with Andy.

Don't know much about Arfa since I usually only post these days after the egotits have called it a night. It's much friendlier then. No time for AP, JP and that rabble.

I forgot to mention Soop though, whose posts on cooking are sometimes very useful.

Tosey's made some excellent predictions, as has Mystic Greg. Not sure whether it's more by luck than judgement though.

Interesting following Tosey's tripling up on defence strategy. Might try that myself next season. 🙂

If you look from the Fulham end, you'll see the defender getting if front of Zamora and heading the ball straight to Johnson. Same with the close up. Only the side on real time angle gives the impression that he touched the ball.

yeh when it was mentioned in here a few days ago i thought it was touch and go... it did look like he did get the faintest of touches though... its a farce if you ask me.. the guys who award the points prob took it off him bc their mini league opponents had him in their team.. same shit for how fat frank got the 3bps against west ham.. did absolute sweet fark all the whole game, touched the ball 5 times in the first half before he scored his goal and still gets it... malouda tore west ham in half and gets 2... its RIGGED!

Have a look at the shooting stats from the CHS game though. No one's making more goal attempts than Malouda at present and Lampard is also well to the fore.

Re Zamora: I have cap'n'd him in two other games but for the integrity of the game, it is important that FPL get it right.

    Fck you fpl
lifting the zamora assist is a fcking joke
with all the ridiculous assists I've seen this year like the Tevez assist for a ballotelli goal when he passed it to him from 3 ft away for ballo to turn and beat 3 defenders before rifling in a cannonball
how the fck so they have the nerve to REMOVE points?
I'm convinced those fckers are taking care of their own fantasy squads
obviously somebody had meireles instead of zamora this week
    ...pricks.

personally i don think zamoras should stand but they have screwed the whole season with their stupid rules on assists. Too much grey area...
Like nanis one last week, he shoots the defender clears it off the line and someone else scores its an assist WTF

I didn't see it but the BBC called it a lay off from zamora and if he intended to do it and everybody obviously thought he had, then that's more of an assist than simply being the last person to touch the ball before the scorer does their thing
Removing points is also pretty fcking aggravating

    More film chat:

The Killer Inside Me-anyone seen it yet? Casey Affleck-most disturbing killer since Anton Chirgur. The level of violence in this film is highly disturbing particularly as it's directed at women. However, the violence isn't glorified, it's very real.

I think that's the thing with film. There is a visual graghic right in front of you. When reading a book you see the violence in your own mind in the psychological setting of the book. the visual is different

Exactly. Film is limited by its overpowering visuals in a certain way. The audience is more complacent
