Monday night’s epic encounter provided the latest title race twist and the two parties involved remain very much in our thinking as we cast an eye over the six-week schedule. I return to “Frisking” duty to find both City and Chelsea screaming for attention, while a rejuvenated Saints and a cavalier Bluebirds seem to offer the favoured routes lower down the price bracket.

Man City

city25

Yes, the defeat to Chelsea was a setback which could dent confidence, but the smart money is on City taking Monday’s result out on Norwich when they meet this weekend. Indeed, the Carrow Road trip is one of several plum fixtures ahead of them and, while the Gameweek 28 blank looms large, given their emphatic goal output, we can ill-afford to overlook City’s assets.

The trip to Norwich, together with Etihad encounters with Sunderland, Stoke and Villa offer plenty of reason to prioritise Manuel Pellegrini’s charges. By all means devise a plan to deal with Gameweek 28 but, at the same time, it’s wise to be stocked up in anticipation of handsome points hauls around their Capital One Cup Wembley date.

There is one meaty caveat to chew over – namely City’s illustrious Champions League tie with Barcelona. Pellegrini will be thankful that this falls around their home league fixtures but, for us Fantasy managers, it threatens to eat into the pitch time of key assets and serve up frustration. The first leg is sandwiched between the home fixtures with Sunderland and Stoke, the second just days after the Etihad clash with Villa.

Rotation in those matches seems inevitable but, just as we have to take the blank Gameweek on the chin, we should accept that there is a cost to pay for investing in City in the coming month and weigh this up against the hefty potential gains.

Cardiff City

cardiff25
The Bluebirds’ activity over the transfer tindow, together with the positivity exuded by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s arrival has undoubtedly re-invigorated their prospects. The fixture list compounds this further, giving Fantasy mangers room for optimism when considering their mid-price squad.

A trip to rivals Swansea this weekend is followed by three home matches in four, with Villa, Hull and Fulham due in Wales. While their home form has faltered, particularly when it comes to clean sheets, there’s every reason to expect goals from a Solskjaer side, inspired by the enterprising wing play of Wilfried Zaha and Craig Noone. That pair undoubtedly provide convincing budget midfield options for the month ahead.

Southampton

southampton25
Having lit up our Fantasy seasons with stunning early season form, Mauricio Pochettino’s side are firmly back on the agenda having come into bloom once again.

The schedule gives the Saints every opportunity to build further, starting with the St Mary’s clash against Stoke and trips to Hull and West Ham. On paper, these will provide stubborn barriers but, in their current form, Southampton will be confident of goals and points over these three fixtures, and the home clash with Liverpool and Norwich that follow.

One of Adam Lallana, Jay Rodriguez or Rickie Lambert looks a wise investment, while the clean sheet at Fulham would even suggest that the back four warrants renewed interest. Stopper Artur Boruc is perhaps the most secure target on offer, with Maya Yoshida and Calum Chambers offering budget routes for those willing to roll the dice on the teamsheet.

Chelsea

chelsea25
Jose Mourinho’s men are on a high and, while they have testing encounters in the next six, they do at least tackle Everton and Spurs at the Bridge, whilst facing comfortable-looking trips to West Brom, Fulham and Villa. Given their current form, investment in a back four that has now conceded just two goals in their last eight looks essential. Meanwhile, Eden Hazard continues to be the headline act amongst a midfield that provides the Blues with a cutting edge.

Like City, we must take Champions League distractions into consideration, although Galatasaray offer a less treacherous path to the quarter-finals than City’s La Liga heavyweights. The first tie with the Turks follows the Gameweek 27 home clash with Everton, suggesting that Mourinho may well be pushed to rotate in some areas for this encounter – given the opponents, however, it seems unlikely.

The second leg follows the Gameweek 30 trip to Villa and, with Arsenal at the Bridge the week after, this would seem likely to be a bigger rotation hotspot. Even so, with three home fixtures in five and two straightforward away trips, the Chelsea traffic is likely to be heading in a positive direction.

Also consider…

Aston Villa
Home fixtures with West Ham and Norwich, together with trips to Cardiff and an ailing Newcastle, offer Paul Lambert room for optimism. With striker Christian Benteke back in the goals, the Villa boss will be confident that his side can pick up points over the next four, which would see them settle in mid-table and quell relegation fears. Fantasy managers can look to Villa Park for differentials with Benteke and even Ron Vlaar (if fit) looking worthy targets.

West Ham
Andy Carroll’s suspension is a huge issue for the Hammers, not least because they’re entering a period where points look up for grabs. If his red card appeal fails, Carroll could miss home fixtures with Norwich and Southampton: two defences that would hardly relish an encounter with the Geordie battering-ram. With a trip to Villa this weekend and another Upton Park clash with Hull in Gameweek 29, Fantasy managers will be drawn to defensive assets but must surely reserve judgment on Kevin Nolan until the FA have come to their conclusion.

Everton
While trips to Spurs and Chelsea offer little hope of defensive returns, the Toffees remain a strong attacking option and, with three favourable home fixtures against Palace, West Ham and Cardiff in the next six, they have to be in our thinking. Kevin Mirallas has timed a run of form to coincide with these improving fixtures, while Seamus Coleman is back fit to settle in our squads in time for forthcoming home comforts.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Peperina, Wakey, Sunny, Baker. I've made the Koscielny to Cahill transfer. Better fixtures, comparable form, and may be able to make a bit of profit out of him. Plus as far as I can tell, I don't think I need to make any transfers next week, so I'll take the free transfer into the week after just incase Aguero is back by then.

It isn't a bad move. I've been really pushing myself to save FT's whenever possible, so i choose the conservative option when i give my opinion.

I want to own Cahill, but i feel like Ivanovic's starts are more secure with Azpi/Matic/Luiz getting time. (I bought Ivan right as the Matic transfer was nearing completion)

That's my plan now, and since I have set my team up semi-well (although we will see how Bony does without Laudrup now) I don't feel the need to change anything next week.

The extra transfer will probably be held for the monster Mnachester double gameweek.

I was going to bench Zaha for the CAR v SWA game, but with poor old Michael Laudrup being sacked I am reconsidering this.

Opinions on either keeping Zaha benched or dropping Bony or Eriksen for Zaha?

I'm actually considering a 4 point hit to get in Yaya - less stressful - as Bemba says. Did you see him last night - he only scored 3 points but that included a bonus despite not scoring, not assisting, not keeping a clean sheet. He's a beast and I've talked myself into it.

It's not the worst plan in the world, should offset the negatives points he will inevitably gain from conceding.

1st place in my ML already has Cahill. I'm in 2nd 23 points back and that's been increasing over the past few weeks, so trying to stop the bleeding.

Is Ivan at .2 more a nice differential to Cahill, or should I also go with Cahill and look for catch-up differentials elsewhere? Terry to rich for my blood at 6.7 without scoring more consistently, but part of his 23 point build up from the past few weeks have been the Chelsea CS's, so I feel like I need to bring in a Chelsea defender.

I really want to ship Bony, anyone else in the same boat? 2 weeks in and the punt is not working out.

Problem is, I sort of fancy buying Sturridge instead, but that would mean a -8, or -4 and get rid of Mata. Plus this is a bad week to go too big on Liverpool.

I think I may have to hang on and hope for some sort of derby goal-fest.

Swansea sacking Laudrup was an absolutely ludicrous decision imo.

He is obviously the right manager for the team, he won a trophy in his first season for Christs' sake! Why Premier League boards decide to sack managers after just a poor run of fixtures is beyond me..

                there are just problems

cliques of players, players claiming laudrup is favouring the spanish contingent etc

Agreed. Laudrup is extremely smart as to football tactics. half his team has been injured at all times.
But to some here, they think it was not an error. actually, to some its more important to checl spelling than the pt of Swa doing an error by sacking him.

+1 worse than Cardiff decision, I am simply staggered. What do these boards / owners expect. Why aren't they being treated as a scape goat and recycled every 6months?
As a spurs fan I was hoping we would poach laudrup and would still prefer him despite Timmy's start though to clarify I would never advocate removing Sherwood now after just a few months

Would appreciate some reassurance guys. I found out about a month ago I had a ticket for the City and Barcelona match two weeks from tonight. I was delighted on hearing this as I did not think I had a hope of getting one. I am living in Ireland so dont go to as many matches as I would like to and really enjoy going when I get the opportunity. However with injuries to important players and playing Chelsea the Saturday before I am having serious doubts about the chances of City winning and this has affected the excitement to an extent. I would really appreciate if you guys with the vast football knowledge you have could provide some reassurance about City's chances of winning and restore the feeling of excitement for the occasion.

Swansea sacking Laudy is on par with Fulham sacking Jol, Cardiff sacking Mackay, Spuds sacking AVB, WBA sacking Clarke.... owners and chairmen only seem to have short term aims and gains, no one wants to stick it out for the long haul and grind out the bad periods, things can't be happy and perfect all the time.

I am an Arsenal man. But I've seen the stats and he wasn't doing a bad job, was given no time at all. Bit of a copy and paste job, but you get the idea.

-Of his 20 games in charge of Tottenham in the Europa League, André Villas-Boas won 12, drew 7 and lost only 1.
-André Villas-Boas had a higher win percentage 53.7% in the Premier League with Tottenham than he did during his 27 games in charge of Chelsea (48.1%).
-André Villas-Boas has the highest winning percentage 56.25% of any Tottenham manager (all competitions) since 1899.
-André Villas-Boas recorded Tottenham’s highest-ever Premier League points tally last season, guiding Spurs to a fifth place finish with 72 points.
-Tottenham spent a reported £105 million on the signings of Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela, Paulinho, Christian Eriksen, Étienne Capoue, Vlad Chiricheș and Nacer Chadli over the summer. He was given just 16 Premier League games to work with them.

Since Sherwood took over, however, they have (in Premier League), won 5, drawn 2 and lost just 1. Which is far better than what AVB managed. So, you can't say that it didn't work for them.

Clarke had to go I think. He had scored sub-40 points from his last season's worth of games. Only a fantastic start in 2012/13 when - as someone on here suggested - they were possibly still Hodgson-organised kept them up last year.

Jol look to have lost the dressing room and the plot, don't think he was going to turn it round.

Jovetic could become a goal-machine over the next few games..

Not really got going yet but with Neg and Dzeko both putting in dire performances v Chelsea, he could soon get starts and inevitably with those fixtures, goals.
