Stevan Jovetic and Samir Nasri grab the goals as City send Chelsea tumbling out of the FA Cup. Craig Gardner’s solitary strike is enough to see Sunderland edge past Southampton as both sides ring the changes, whilst Cardiff’s struggles under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continue after there are beaten at home by holders Wigan.

Dominant City Ease Through as Fixture Backlog Looms
Manuel Pellegrini’s men ended a run of two games without a goal and also avenged their home defeat to Chelsea earlier this month with an impressive display yesterday evening. The Blues boss made four changes from the side that drew at Norwich last weekend; Edin Dzeko replaced Alvaro Negredo as Stevan Jovetic’s strike partner, whilst Javi Garcia, Joleon Lescott and Costel Pantilimon came in for Jesus Navas, Martin Demichelis and Joe Hart. Jovetic strengthened his claim for a starting berth by grabbing the opener and fit-again Samir Nasri – on for the former Fiorentina forward just after the hour mark as City moved to 4-4-1-1 – struck the second to ensure City’s progress.

From a Fantasy perspective, though, this result throws a real spanner in the works. Pellegrini’s side already had a blank Gameweek 28 due to the Capital One Cup but will now be without a fixture the following Gameweek, too – their league game with Aston Villa, initially scheduled for Saturday March 8, cannot be moved to midweek due to the Champions League clash with Barcelona on Wednesday March 12. In addition, the cancellation of last Wednesday’s home showdown with Sunderland will also need to be rescheduled, meaning that City will have three doubles on their agenda from Gameweek 30 onwards. At present, only double Gameweek 31 has been confirmed.

After the match, Pellegrini admitted the midweek postponement allowed his side some much-needed rest and also explained the upcoming clash with Barcelona had an effect on yesterday’s selection:

“It was important not to play against Sunderland on Wednesday. This team has played 18 games in the last two months. That’s why we were down in our performance against Chelsea and Norwich. But working again on Thursday and Friday we were fresh and I was absolutely sure we are going to play a good game. We have two important games today and Tuesday that’s why we had a mix of different players – we’ll see what we’ll do on Tuesday.”

Cahill Boost Not Enough for Beaten Blues
Gary Cahill recovered from the calf complaint picked up in Tuesday’s draw at West Brom to partner David Luiz at centre-half for the beaten visitors. Jose Mourinho utilised Ramires on the right flank, mirroring a tactic that proved successful at the Etihad in Gameweek 24 and, once again, dropped Oscar to the bench, with Willian keeping his place in the attacking midfield three. The Blues boss moved to a 4-4-2 after the break, with Eden Hazard and Mohamed Salah fielded through the middle and Willian shifting to the left, but the visitors managed just two attempts on goal afternoon, with both off target.

The 2-0 defeat means Chelsea’s Gameweek 29 home clash with Tottenham will now go ahead as scheduled – Mourinho couldn’t argue with the result and agreed City’s midweek break proved decisive:

“City played much better than us and deserved to win. Credit for what my team did two weeks ago. Today the situation was simple. It’s simple to analyse. They were the best team and they won. Today was also clear there was a different freshness between the teams, one team played a few days ago and another team played last week and had one week without competitive football. It was easy to see the difference.”

Gardner The Black Cats Hero
Gus Poyet made nine changes from the side that lost at home to Hull in Gameweek 25, with only John O’Shea and Fabio Borini retained in the starting line-up. Craig Gardner grabbed the only goal of the game as the Wearsiders continued to impress in the cup under their new manager – Sunderland already have a blank Gameweek 28 due to Capital One up Final duties but, unfortunately for Fantasy managers, yesterday’s win also puts their Gameweek 29 clash against Liverpool at risk, though, with neither club in Europe, it’s still conceivable the fixture may be moved to midweek. After the game, Poyet admitted a number of fringe players have strengthened their case for regular game time after impressing against the Saints:

“There were players today that have given me a lot to think about for the future and also about the shape of the team and the idea of playing with two strikers. I thought we were excellent on the ball today. Everybody was brave with their passing and decisions and that was the part that pleased me the most.”

The Saints Go Tumbling Out
Mauricio Pochettino made six changes from the side that defeated Hull at the KC on Tuesday evening. The likes of Artur Boruc, Jose Fonte and Calum Chambers all dropped out at the back, while, further up the field, Jack Cork, Morgan Schneiderlin and Jay Rodriguez also made way. From a Fantasy perspective, the defeat means that Southampton’s Gameweek 29 trip to Palace, scheduled for Saturday 8th March, will now go ahead as planned. After the game, the club’s assistant manager, Jesus Perez, faced the press and defended the decision to make so many alterations to the starting XI:

“After the last game, we assessed our players and we decided the best team to play today. Obviously, it was a tough game against Hull, we played away as well, we came home late and some of our players were not fully recovered and we decided the best players to play today. For us, every single player is important and useful for us and it doesn’t matter who is on the pitch. When we decide to play with one or another player, it’s because we trust them, they trust us. They support us, so there’s nothing to complain about.”

Bluebirds Crash Out to Holders
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made five changes from the midweek goalless draw against Villa, as Cardiff played host to Wigan. Both Kenwyne Jones and Fabio were cup-tied and, with Craig Noone, Ben Turner, Declan John and Jordan Mutch, dropping out of the XI, the Bluebirds boss handed Jo Inge Berget and Jose Cala their debuts. Having rolled out a 4-4-2 against Villa, Solskjaer reverted to a lone striker system – Fraizer Campbell led the line and scored the hosts’ only goal in the 2-1 defeat, meaning he has now notched four of the Welsh club’s eight strikes in nine matches across all competitions since the departure of Malky Mackay. The loss also ensures Cardiff’s Gameweek 29 home match against Fulham will go ahead as planned – Solskjaer may look to bring Mats Møller Dæhli into contention for that one after singling out the Norwegian’s display post-match:

“Everyone who was here would have to agree that Mats did fantastically well, for me the outstanding player on the pitch. Today he did himself the world of good, playing a full ninety minutes. He proved again today that he’s going to be a fantastic footballer one day. He wants to get on the ball and play, creating chances for others. He also rarely gives possession away and even as the game was getting away from us, he helped us to regain a foothold.”

No, I am not jealous of him at all, the fact that he is a great manager isn't in question, The guy is an arsehole, pure and simple. There is absolutely no need to say what he says. If his team are good enough they will win games, simple. How did/ does having a personal swipe at Wenger have any impact on how well his team does/doesn't perform ? I normally like some of what he says but to be so personal is too much imo

    Crosses: 1.4
Accurate long balls per game: 1.8

Since his move to White Hart Lane, he has generally excelled, (but not very much under AVB as he was a pheripheral figure and injured as well), despite often playing out of position. This includes regular stints out left, as well as a period initially under Tim Sherwood where he seemed to be acting as a deep-lying playmaker. Even so, few people actually seem to be giving Eriksen credit for actually being any good. Eriksen’s shooting accuracy is very high, and it’s probably a matter of time before more goals come. Key passes are not the best but he’s been played out of position and mostly been playing with Soldado, Paulinho, and Andros Townsend.

As you can see, Christian Eriksen's strengths are particularly strong in key passes and long shots. His best position is when he is deployed in the No. 10 role notably against Swansea where he got the assist for Emmanuel Adebayor's opening goal and was given the license to roam in a free role.

When he was played in Central midfield in Tim Sherwood's second game in charge. 1-1 draw with WBA. He got the MOTM performance and also scored from a free-kick which suggests his dead ball specialty.

He then played on the Left Wing vs Man. United and Crystal Palace. The former he harvested a goal and assist, again to Adebayor which highlights their chemistry and understanding. Whilst the latter he scored in a 2-0 win. In this position he likes to cut inside, do layoffs and shoot from distance. and this is where Sherwood has put him in his 4-4-2 (Soldado upfront with Adebayor) as oppose to 4-2-3-1 in the No. 10 role. However, He also played at centre-mid in 4-4-2 due to the absence of Paulinho, but because of the emergence of Bentaleb and the depth of Capoue, Holtby(Now on loan) and Dembele he is not played there anymore.

Personally his best position is the No.10 role also played in when representing Denmark. But because of Sherwood's system he rarely gets a chance to do so accordingly as they are more pressing issues to address not to mention Eriksen's versatility. Moreover he is not as defensively sound compared to the likes of Capoue and Dembele. He relies on his creativity and ability for freedom to pull the strings.

The cause for concern is he was hauled off just after 59 minutes against Everton and didn't even start in the 4-0 drubbing of Newcastle let alone come off the bench. Spurs played 4-1-4-1 that day with Capoue holding and Paulinho, Bentaleb in the hole. IMO he is being rested for the season run-in, but the return of Townsend also gives Spurs directness and speed on the flanks. I'm aware that Lennon does that already, but with fullbacks tiring towards the end of the campaign that pace could be vital.

The verdict: I'd say hold for one more game vs Norwich (Note: That was his debut day match were he got an assist in a 2-0 win at home and also got 1 bonus point). If he doesn't perform, play or come on as a sub then shift as most of you are likely to have Adebayor.

I hope you found this info and stats worthwhile, helpful and insightful. Feel free to comment below on you're opinions on Eriksen. Would you shift or hold? Thanks in advance.

Love the look of the Ultimate game, always been a fan of being able to make subs midweek 🙂

But crikey, the scoring looks complicated!!

During the season fantasy players will be allocated a point score after each game, based on their performances in Barclays Premier League matches. Points are awarded as detailed in the table below:

    Action Points
For playing in a game 1
For playing at least 60 minutes in a game (includes playing points mentioned above) 2
    For each goal scored 6
For each goal scored by your midfielders 6
For each goal scored by your forwards 6
For each goal assist (when a pass or cross leads to a goal being scored, no defender touch must interfere with the pass) 3
For your goalkeeper or defenders conceding 0 goals (must also play at least 60 minutes) 4
For your midfielders conceding 0 goals (must also play at least 60 minutes) 1
    For every 3 saves 1
    For every penalty save 5
For every 2 goals conceded by your goalkeeper or defenders -1
    For every penalty conceded -1
    For every penalty miss -2
    For every yellow card -1
For every red card (includes any yellow card points) -3
    For every own goal -2
For every 3 crosses (a cross is defined where the ball is played to a team mate in the penalty area)
For every 3 key passes (a key pass is one that leads to a shot at goal) 1
For every big chance created (a big chance is one where the analyst determines the player should score) 1
For every big chance missed -1
For every 8 clearances, blocks or interceptions 1
For every 8 recovered balls 1
For every error leading to a goal -1

Not sure what they mean about the points per goal, assists are even more subjective than ever and points for crosses, key passes and blocks should be interesting 🙂 Who's in?

Does this mean where Shearer says on MOTD "He's gotta score there"

      For each goal scored 6
For each goal scored by your midfielders 6
For each goal scored by your forwards 6

What does the first bit mean? If every goal is 6pts why list mids and fwds? 😕

    UFPL and UEFA Europa League.

Next season, it will be essential for fantasy managers to select players from teams participating in the Europa League, as these teams tend to play later in the GW:

Swansea have had 15 matches played on the following day in any given GW.
Tottenham have had 19 matches played on the following day in any given GW.

Manager substitutions will be a powerful tool for managers wanting to maximise points.

Sorry, that's my bad. I've given it far too much thought over the last few days and could do with things being a bit clearer to plan effectively.

For me, I'd like Swansea through so I can play Mirallas, and then Brighton tomoro so that I get to 10 players and 4 FTs before GW29, meaning I have more scope to plan for the DGWs to come.

I think you will want a captain playing on the 22nd, with the possibility of changing it if low scoring.

Transfer the injured players. You get 4 transfers GW 27, 4 in GW 28 and unlimited in GW 29.

I currently have no Everton players but really hope they lose today. Their fixtures from GW28 (including a DGW) make their players great replacements for City players.

exactly.... would be perfect as they wouldnt require swapping out afterwards as eves fixtures are great........

feel like i really need to hold my transfer this week as 2 frees gw28, 29 will be like golddust....could take a -8 and really sort the team out

If you put an injured player or two in your UFPL team could make emergency loans at will.

I think the beta has been set up like next season will be. So in 14/15 we get 4 FTs to use in both GW2 and 3 then unlimited transfers for GW4 (after the transfer window has closed). I assume we then get a transfer window in January. Over a whole season that's not many chances to make transfers.

No transfers for the last 8 weeks of the season though. Next year you'll only be able to make transfers during the real life transfer windows.

The player doesn't have to be injured. You can use an emergency loan to temporarily replace anyone.

I was thinking about ditching my 2 Crystal Palace players a week ago. Now with a home fixture 29, plus Swansea, Sunderland, Newcastle, Cardiff, Villa and a DGW in the next 8 GWs, they're worth holding onto I would say. Funny how the odd result can change your perspective on things so quickly in this game.

        They're my two.

MAN U, swa, SOUT, sund, newc, CHE, card, AST are their next 8.

Add eve to the start of that run + not long ago Sunderland and Newcastle were in decent form so those fixtures looked fairly bare. Now with games where there are lots of blanks, and a dip in form, they look worth holding onto beyond Chelsea. And Punch delivered v Chelsea for Saints in a DGW last year!

It's just the extra money. No doubt 5.5 is still value, but I got Puncheon at 4.9 and can't waste a transfer going semi-sideways.

Here's one for the FFS powers that be to mull over:

Will Ultimate FPL tranfer activity affect market prices for FPL?

If so, it means that the different wildcard window will give a big incentive for FPL'ers to use their elective wildcard in GW3 as the prices will be twice as volatile as normal.

No, price changes in UFPL are based on price changes in FPL. In UFPL a player rises .1 for every .3 rise in FPL but only next season. No price changes in the beta.
