The past seven days have been some of the most dramatic of the season, with the fixture list under threat from gales, falling masonry and the prospect of strike action – all this on the eve of Gameweek 29 being torn apart by FA Cup Quarter Finals. We look back at the Fantasy Football Scout community’s reaction to the week’s events and the discussion on the blanks and double Gameweeks to come. As ever, we also catch up with all the ongoing community tournaments, plus take time out to sift through some of the community’s early advice for those playing the newly launched beta of the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League game.

The Hottest Topics

Tuesday was the most anxious of days, as the community waited on the fate of the Fulham vs Liverpool clash – a fixture that hung in the balance thanks to potential strike action. Thankfully, Fantasy managers, and in particular Daniel Sturridge owners, were able to breathe a collective sigh of relief. The strike was called off, the game went ahead and the Liverpool striker notched up another huge points haul. But, as Bsloebadger’s post shows, if the game had been cancelled, there would have been some very strange formations this week among our depleted squads. Rasping Drive, who was staring at a potential 2-4-2 formation, was among the relieved masses.

While the threat of strike action looked to be our major concern at the start of the week, mother nature was to prove a far more threatening foe. Wednesday night saw Everton’s Goodison clash with Palace postponed due to storm-damaged buildings, while the gales also scuppered City’s meet with Sunderland at the Etihad. The fallout was certainly felt by the community, with Leaf amongst the biggest sufferers – he was seven players down thanks to Wednesday’s winds. Meanwhile, Yes The Sess was among those lucky souls to emerge smelling of roses – Laurent Koscielny’s points off the bench courtesy of the clean sheet for United helped a good few to a respectable Gameweek, despite the unforeseen blanks.

While we ponder just how Wednesday’s damage will create double Gameweeks down the line, the weekend’s FA Cup results will also lead to inevitable postponements in Gameweek 29. Buk II’s post proved one of the most popular this week as he calculated the probabilities of each Premier League fixture being cut from the Gameweek schedule. RabMac was also on hand to offer some sound Gameweek 29 advice – saving transfers to deal with the fallout of missing games topped his list.

Bsloebadger was on a roll this week with a further hot topic, this time focusing on an unlikely source of potential points – namely Norwich City’s key assets. He points out that, despite current form, their schedule, featuring home encounters against Stoke and Sunderland, makes them worthy of a punt.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s next two plum fixtures (nor, CAR) sparked interest from James Collins, who has his sights firmly set on Emmanuel Adebayor’s run of form, while Von Ryan’s Express likes the look of Paulinho as a midfield differential.

This week also saw the launch of a Beta version of the Ultimate Fantasy Premier League (UFPL) game. Opening its gates on Saturday, the community was quick to set about constructing their 25-man squads for this spiced-up version of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) It’s not just the squad size that’s different to the traditional FPL game, the scoring also has some interesting tweaks, with extra points awarded for key passes and other performance stats. Studley was among those on hand to offer some guidance – his excellent spreadsheet on the point differences between players in the FPL and UFPL games proved a big draw. By the way, we’ve set up a Fantasy Football Scout league in the UFPL for those underway on the beta – the code to join is 1305-459.

The Community Tournaments

Teltzham Hotspurs has emerged as the stand out manager in Heelsoverhead’s Worst to First – 2 Million + Club – the tournament for FPL managers who suffered an overall rank below 2,000,000 in the first five Gameweeks. He’s been on the rise ever since and currently holds an impressive rank of 3,603.

TorresMagic’s Last Man Standing league lost 22 managers this week, with 138 now remaining. The Missing Link leads his “After Xmas League”, while Beric heads the seeding for both the FPL Open and Elite 64 competitions. Full details of his leagues can be found here.

Gameweek 26 saw myself reclaim the FFS Moderators and Contributors league lead and continue in front of the FPL part of the community’s Iron Man competition, for those taking part in multiple games. Gigging Order and In Like Flynn continue to top the competition’s Sky Sports and Metro leagues, respectively.

DonTheSpecialOne continues to lead the PuffinBoy Memorial Cup, named after one of this site’s first posters. His rank of 147th is looking unbeatable among the competition’s old guard.

Some late news came in last weekend, which thankfully we have time to squeeze in this week related to Thomass’ Big Bash League. He is delighted to announced that he and Giggs Boson‘s team has won the final against d1sable and BlueLion‘s team.

LONG POST ALERT. The Case for and against Christian Eriksen. From a Spurs Fan. (Stats courtesy of WhoScored.com)

Since his move to White Hart Lane, he has generally excelled, (but not very much under AVB as he was a pheripheral figure and injured as well), despite often playing out of position. This includes regular stints out left, as well as a period initially under Tim Sherwood where he seemed to be acting as a deep-lying playmaker. Even so, few people actually seem to be giving Eriksen credit for actually being any good. Eriksen’s shooting accuracy is very high, and it’s probably a matter of time before more goals come. Key passes are not the best but he’s been played out of position and mostly been playing with Soldado, Paulinho, and Andros Townsend.

As you can see, Christian Eriksen's strengths are particularly strong in key passes and long shots. His best position is when he is deployed in the No. 10 role notably against Swansea where he got the assist for Emmanuel Adebayor's opening goal and was given the license to roam in a free role.

When he was played in Central midfield in Tim Sherwood's second game in charge. 1-1 draw with WBA. He got the MOTM performance and also scored from a free-kick which suggests his dead ball specialty.

He then played on the Left Wing vs Man. United and Crystal Palace. The former he harvested a goal and assist, again to Adebayor which highlights their chemistry and understanding. Whilst the latter he scored in a 2-0 win. In this position he likes to cut inside, do layoffs and shoot from distance. and this is where Sherwood has put him in his 4-4-2 (Soldado upfront with Adebayor) as oppose to 4-2-3-1 in the No. 10 role. However, He also played at centre-mid in 4-4-2 due to the absence of Paulinho, but because of the emergence of Bentaleb and the depth of Capoue, Holtby(Now on loan) and Dembele he is not played there anymore.

Personally his best position is the No.10 role also played in when representing Denmark. But because of Sherwood's system he rarely gets a chance to do so accordingly as they are more pressing issues to address not to mention Eriksen's versatility. Moreover he is not as defensively sound compared to the likes of Capoue and Dembele. He relies on his creativity and ability for freedom to pull the strings.

The cause for concern is he was hauled off just after 59 minutes against Everton and didn't even start in the 4-0 drubbing of Newcastle let alone come off the bench. Spurs played 4-1-4-1 that day with Capoue holding and Paulinho, Bentaleb in the hole. IMO he is being rested for the season run-in, but the return of Townsend also gives Spurs directness and speed on the flanks. I'm aware that Lennon does that already, but with fullbacks tiring towards the end of the campaign that pace could be vital.

The verdict: I'd say hold for one more game vs Norwich (Note: That was his debut day match were he got an assist in a 2-0 win at home and also got 1 bonus point). If he doesn't perform, play or come on as a sub then shift as most of you are likely to have Adebayor.

I hope you found this info and stats worthwhile, helpful and insightful. Feel free to comment below on you're opinions on Eriksen. Would you shift or hold? Thanks in advance.

Long but very interesting post. I got him when I WCed in GW23, but so far he hasn't done anything spectacular to my team. I'm keeping him for the foreseeable future since I will have players possibly blanking in next few GWs i.e Mata, Mirallas but after getting Ade this week, I'm not sure about doubling up Spurs attack in the long run. My hope is that he's going to play again in PL, to be used sparingly in Europa and prove his FPL doubters wrong. 😀

Tricky one. He is available for GW29 so surely it would be mad to ship him out if he goes and plays a part of that game. I think I just have to hold for now.

Morning all. I haven't had time to look at my team or get updated on anything since I set it up before last deadline... what should I be prioritizing for now?

    Adrián
    Ward Azpilicueta Chambers
    Hazard Mata Eriksen Mirallas
    Suárez van Persie Sturridge

    Subs: Mannone Noone Olsson McShane

2 FTs 0.1M in the bank. I'm thinking ditching McShane is a definite yes with one FT. Keep RVP and Mata over the blank?

    Hi all

Some advice needed please if you would be so kind!

    Mannone (Adrian)
Cahill - Kolarov - Fonte (Whittaker - Chester)
Yaya - Hazard - Mata - Colback (Mutch)
    Suarez - Ade - Rooney

    0.8 ITB and 2 FT

With the upcoming blanks / DGW what should I do with my MCI/MUN/SUN players? Im conscious I will only be able to field 8 playables in GW 28 and not sure what to do.

I've been on Sturridge for 3 of the last 4 and it's obviously worked out well. But I'm strongly considering going back to Luis for a home game against Swansea. I'm not convinced his positioning changes a lot about his output. He had a monster game against Fulham in terms of shots (more than Sturridge) and generally performs better at Anfield anyway.

I like Williamson -> MOlsson. I'd wait it out as long as possible though, we might get some more news before deadline.

Definitely wait until all fixtures are sorted. You have no 29 gk if hull go through tonight. Otherwise Williamson, for Nor def maybe.

Definitely wouldn't WC, rather spend that on a DGW pileup. If you know when you're going to WC though you can easier let go of players who has blanks with upcoming DGW(s).

i think this will be the week for us who hold our wc so dear, and could be utilize to the max.

most of the suggestions here says that we should just go with 9 players and bear with it. instead of ditchin and getting em back for 2 transfer wasted.

different story if u still have ur wc though, could get rid all blanks and spam with playing players, hold for gw 29. and boom wc on gw30

that said, i still couldn get rid of SAS due to their cheap prices when i got em. so ill probably playing 5-4-1 or 4-5-1,

so question is, if u have a wc, how would u handle blanks ?

    ___________________________________________________________________________

    lost in last page sry.

ok so.. loading up 1st 11 on blank and wc before dgw is the best way

too bad i kinda refuse to sell sas, meaning 4-5-1?

who will that 1 best be?

    ADE?

Really looking forward to GW28/29... Gives me a good chance to punt on some players like Ince, Snodgrass and Jelavic/Long without too much issue about them blanking..

If Brighton win tonight I'll field 11 in 29 with two further transfers to plan for dgws. If hull win, I'll have 6 players and don't know what to do with my FTs.

Haven't wanted Brighton to win a game this much ever.

Same boat as me and many others. I can't see myself taking a hit to get rid of either of those, so most likely I'll be going without a GK if the WHM game is off as well.

Not quite. Adrian, McGregor, Demel, Nolan. I manipulated the explanation of my FTs for dramatic effect. After tonight I'll either have 6 or 9 starters, with 4 FTs until 29.

Ade's fixture turn tricky from 29th GW, so u cant expect something big from him
With the gametime given, Jrod was good last night
Lambert, jst like lallana, have desire to go brazil, on pks, fks, so I would prefer him

GW 34 could be a nice time to have a differential WC with a lot of DGWs coming to an end and a few more on the horizon bringing a nice end to your season..

Or spend the next two weeks building towards a GW29 specialist team and then WC after..
