Scout Scribbles – Ozil Woe for Arsenal

Mesut Ozil is sidelined with a hamstring injury as Arsenal crash out of Europe. Christian Eriksen is back for Tottenham’s midweek clash with Benfica, Baggies skipper Chris Brunt is ruled out for weeks with a knee injury, Jon Walters has his appeal for wrongful dismissal rejected, whilst Roberto Martinez is keen to court caution with Phil Jagielka’s hamstring problem:

ARSENAL EXIT EUROPE AND LOSE OZIL

Laurent Koscielny returned to partner Per Mertesacker in central defence for last night’s Champions League showdown with Bayern Munich after the former recovered from a hamstring problem that forced him out of the last two games for club and country. Elsewhere at the back Arsene Wenger handed Thomas Vermaelen a rare start at left back as both Kieran Gibbs and Nacho Monreal were ruled out with injury. Mesut Ozil was brought off with an injury at half-time for the Gunners, while Lukas Podolski grabbed the away side’s controversial equaliser.

Post-match, Wenger delivered bad news about Ozil’s early withdrawal:

“He has a hamstring problem that looks quite serious. I don’t know how long he will be out for. For sure, he is out of Spurs. We have to make a scan tomorrow to see how bad it is but he is out at least for a few weeks. I hope it’s not too bad.”

The Scout Says: Ozil’s injury will come as a blow for those still hanging on to the Gunners’ record signing. His first goal since December in the FA Cup at the weekend provided a glimmer of hope that he might be about to finally return to form just in time for the upcoming Gameweek 31 double, but this latest injury looks set to scupper any chances of the 9.7-priced midfielder providing any Fantasy value for the remainder of the campaign. Tomas Rosicky looks most likely to be the man to benefit from the German’s absence, perhaps offering us a cut-price midfield option in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, Koscielny’s return to the starting line-up will buoy his owners, although potential suitors of the game’s seventh highest-scoring defender should beware – with Tottenham, Chelsea, Manchester City and Everton to play in the next four Gameweeks, Arsenal’s defensive picks are unlikely to provide much value in the near future.

ERIKSEN ON COURSE FOR RETURN

Spurs manager Tim Sherwood has confirmed that Christian Eriksen has returned to training from a back injury and is in contention for his side’s Europe League duties on Thursday. Sherwood was quick to acknowledge the impact the Dane had for his side before his current spell on the sidelines:

“Christian has contributed well in his last few matches, both goals and assists and it’s great to have him back in contention.”

The Scout Says: Although Eriksen’s game time has become something of a guessing game in recent weeks, Sherwood’s praise would seem to suggest that the midfielder still has an important role to play for the north London outfit before the season comes to a close. The Dane, now down to 6.7, has not featured since early February in the league, but managers should keep an eye on the playmaker, who – if given the pitch-time by his manager upon his return from injury – undeniably has the quality to defy a tough fixture list and rekindle the form that saw him plunder 45 points between Gameweeks 18-23.

WALTERS BAN CONFIRMED

Stoke City have failed in their late appeal to overturn Jon Walters’ red card picked up against Norwich on Saturday, meaning that the Republic of Ireland international will sit out the next three league games, joining teammate Charlie Adam on the sidelines for the Potters.

The Scout Says: Walters’ first ever red card comes at a sore time for Fantasy managers, with the Stoke midfielder having recently begun to step in form. Back on penalty duties thanks to the absence of the aforementioned Adam, Walters netted from the spot in Saturday’s game and the previous weekend’s win over Arsenal, his first goals since Gameweek 21 and the first time he has returned attacking points in two consecutive Gameweeks this season. However, the 6.1-priced man will now miss a trio of potentially profitable fixtures (WHM, avl, HUL), leaving his small pool of owners, including the 23,000+ managers to snap him following his winning goal against Arsenal, scouring the markets for a replacement.

MARTINEZ TO EASE JAGIELKA BACK INTO ACTION

Everton boss Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Phil Jagielka is close to a return from a hamstring injury but will not be rushed back into the centre of the Toffee’s defence. Martinez acknowledged the backlog of fixtures his team face as we head towards the end of the campaign, and highlighted the importance of having Jagielka at full fitness for the run in:

“Phil is recovering well. Clearly it’s important he is 100 per cent. I know he’s a player who will at times put himself forward at only 90 per cent to help the team. But with the amount of games we have – it’s a nine-week period with 11 games – we need Phil and every player to be fully fit. Whenever Phil is 100 per cent, he’ll be able to help the team, but we need to protect him a little bit and make sure he’s not rushed back into playing too early, which could risk a further period out.”

The Scout Says: A return from injury for Jagielka will be comforting news for the 14.4% of managers who own the defender, although Martinez’s words concerning his fitness will subsequently leave them in significant doubt over whether he will be reinstalled to the Toffees’ defence for the visit of Cardiff this weekend. The majority of managers eyeing up Everton’s defensive assets for the remainder of the season will undoubtedly be deciding between full-backs Leighton Baines and Seamus Coleman anyway, although Martinez’s insistence on 100% fitness certainly indicates that he won’t be taking any chances with his teamsheet and is prepared to utilise the depth of his squad: a factor that may potentially hinder our attempts to take advantage of Everton’s upcoming double Gameweeks.

LUCAS AND SAKHO BOOST FOR LIVERPOOL

Liverpool have been handed a boost in the race for the title, after Lucas and Mamadou Sakho returned to full training yesterday. Lucas has been missing for the Merseysiders since mid-January with a knee injury, whilst a torn hamstring has kept Sakho out since late December, but both came through an Under-21’s game unscathed last week and now look set to offer Brendan Rodgers options for Sunday’s clash with United.

The Scout Says: Potentially, given the Red’s current form, both players may initially struggle to force their way back into Liverpool’s starting XI immediately, with Steven Gerrard currently excelling in the holding role and the 4.3-priced Jon Flanagan beginning to cement his name at left-back. However, if Rodgers chooses to retain the midfield diamond utilised so successfully against Southampton last time around, the Brazilian could be back in the centre before long – potentially a worry for Raheem Sterling owners, after the youngster’s run of 15 league starts came to an end at St Mary’s due to the new formation.

Brunt Blow for Baggies

West Brom have confirmed their skipper is set to be sidelined for five or six weeks with the knee injury that forced him off against United last Saturday lunchtime. Pepe Mel was dealt a further blow with the news that Diego Lugano is out for up to four weeks, whilst Claudio Yacob and Steven Reid remain doubtful after picking up problems at the weekend. Billy Jones is “making good progress” from a hamstring complaint ahead of an upcoming trip to Swansea.

The Scout Says: Brunt’s injury arrives ahead of a crucial run of fixtures for the Midlands outfit. The next four matches pit the Baggies against fellow strugglers Swansea, Hull, Cardiff and Norwich and, devoid of their skipper’s creativity, few will be willing to take a punt. Brunt had played every minute on the left flank since Mel arrived, with his absence potentially handing the likes of Scott Sinclair or Graham Dorrans a chance, though for those who reckon West Brom can take advantage of those fixtures, Victor Anichebe looks the one in-form option – the 5.1-priced frontman has scored or assisted four of his side’s last five league goals.

Re-post for a new post (I'll squeeze this in one last time for a new crowd)

A question I see come up a lot is whether to keep Mata or not, so I thought I'd delve a little deeper:

    Mata - 9.6m - owned by 11.5%
Remaining Fixtures - LIV, whu/MCI, AVI, new, blank, eve, NOR, SUN, sot
    Since joining United - 6, 7, 7, 3, 3, 3 - P.P.G = 4.833333
Picked up 5 bonus points in 6 games

Nailed on in the Premier League, no threat of rotation. Playing mainly out of position and is more likely to 'assist the assist-er'. On 1/2 of corners (Rooney takes the other side) and very little FKs.
Has a DGW coming up but not great fixtures, looking at his P.P.G, 9-10 points could be expected as a guide, unlikely to explode.

So to answer the original question, need to look at alternatives to Mata. For the purpose of this post, going to assume Yaya and Hazard are in people's teams and going to look round a similar price range, the player(s) must have a DGW also and the data used in the last 6 games.

Gerrard/Silva are the likely candidates, so lets look at them:

    Gerrard - 9.1%- owned by 10.2%
Remaining fixtures - mun, car/SUN, TOT, whu, MCI, nor, CHE, cpl, NEW
    Last 6 games - 8, 1, 9, 11, 2, 8 - P.P.G. = 6.5
    Picked up 4 bonus points

Also nailed on in FPL, playing a deeper role was 'suppose' to be detrimental too Gerrard points potential but with Penalties in his locker and the ability to pick a pass from seemingly anywhere, has the one of the Prem's most potent strikeforce, have scored the most goals over any other team. Suarez will keep winning him penalties.

DGW fixtures - car, SUN - points per game projection for the double = 13 - Doesn't have a blank in gw34 and with all the 'big guns' to play at home, Liverpool could be in for a decent run-in.

    Silva - 9.1m - owned by 4.3%
Remaining Fixtures - hul, FUL/mun, ars, SOT, liv, WBM, cpl, eve, WHU
    Points in last 6 games - 4, 5, 5, 2, 3, 3 - P.P.G. = 3.666666
    Picked up 1 bonus point

A lot depends on whether City progress in the Champions League to determine whether Silva is nailed on or not in the Prem, has a tendency to come off after 65-70 minutes for Milner/Navas.
You could argue that Silva and Mata are similar FPL-wise, due to their ability to 'assist the assister'. DGW potential - FUL/mun - points projection for the double is 7 points, FUL is a tasty fixture whereas other other is slightly trickier.

Summary: If your FPL team has more pressing concerns then I would deal with these first, If you have nothing else pressing then my option would be to transfer Mata > Gerrard, Gerrard has superior fixtures for the double, in greater form, greater points potential over the double than Mata or Silva. If Man City exit the Champions League, I would then perhaps consider Gerrard > Silva for the run-in, quite frankly their fixtures are amazing but can look into that at a later date.

Just because Mata has a double, doesn't mean he is immune to a transfer, especially to someone with a potentially profitable double.

    Cheers

I wanted to concentrate on Gerrard and Silva because close in price but Nasri could come into consideration maybe after the DGW31 when Man City have more fixtures and a double up with Yaya. The 1 million you'd save by going Nasri over Silva means you could upgrade elsewhere.

Your brother has had a lot of red arrows recently and his TV is far lower than yours, so you should have a pretty good chance of catching him. But why don't you get the best players for yourself, irrespective of whether your brother has some of them too, because he won't be able to afford as many of them as you can?

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Is Lukaku the anti-Baines?

This is revisiting a theory put forward earlier this season (we think by Roscola) that Lukaku’s presence seriously dents Baines’s returns.

In the first five matches of the season when Lukaku didn't play or played sparingly Baines racked up 42 points.

As soon as Lukuku came back his points dropped off markedly. When Lukaku was injured recently Baines’s points shot up. Coincidence?

I’ve totted up to get a points per game.

When Baines plays 60+ mins and Lukaku plays less than 60 mins or not at all the PPG for Baines is 5.27.

When Baines plays 60+ mins and Lukaku plays for more than 60 mins the PPG for Baines is 2.9.

That’s a cut in half of Baines’s points with Lukaku on the scene.

We’ve had quite a debate about this behind the scenes here about Baines’s recent upturn in form. Is Lukaku really the anti-Baines? If so why? Or is the above all coincidence?

Bonus points going to Lukaku rather than Baines is an obvious factor as Everton are more likely to score with Lukaku on the pitch. But perhaps there’s something else? Does Baines become the assister of the assister with Lukaku there, but is more willing or better able to get successful crosses in when Lukaku is absent.

Wow. This theory is up there. I think you're over-analyzing big time and there is no real correlation between Baines' and Lukaku's points.

Indeed - there is a correlation. No idea if its coincidence...or due to other factors (eg Piennar) but the figures strongly suggest that Baines is less likely to score well with Lukaku on the pitch.

Sorry, you're right. There is correlation in the points but there's way too little data to make any conclusions. Tons of other factors that could be at play here, not to mention just pure randomness. We like to analyze stuff, but I still think the theory is way out there 🙂

Now a theory about his play with and without Pienaar on the other hand is more interesting because Pienaar is a much bigger influence on Baines than Lukaku is.

It was indeed my theory, though it included the compounding factor of Pienaar - basically when Pienaar is on the pitch, Baines feels safe to get forward a lot more.

I remembered reading somewhere (can't find it now for the life of me) that at West Brom last season, Lukaku never converted crosses. He just doesn't like them, prefers play to come through the middle.

So a player who makes lots of crosses in a team where the main strike threat doesn't like crosses makes Baines even less appealing.

The Pienaar point is interesting. Maybe its Pienaar that is the pro Baines to Lukaku's anti Baines.

Sounds right to me. If you compare Baines' chances created with and without Pienaar on the pitch, it's very striking. And Pienaar could be out for a while, diminishing Baines' stock even further.

It's a bit of a slog figuring it out to be honest. Pienaar hasn't missed a lot of games but he's been subbed off and on quite a lot (Martinez is very apt to change the shape of his attack mid-game when things aren't working out).

Makes it hard to figure out who has been on the pitch together, as I found out when I tried to figure out if Pienaar's absence would impact Mirallas (I think Kevin may benefit but it's hard to tell).

Ah, Baines doesn't take many free kicks anymore. Mirallas is the man for that.

Baines is the corners and crosses guy...but as Roscola says this is in a team with a striker who hates crosses.

to show number of crosses/ passes from baines and perhaps others when lukaku there and not there
could be that everton play someone like pienaar more when lukaku out so that influences baines role

I always think with these with/without comparisons, we really have to look at the quality of opposition as well otherwise it looks to make sense but may not.
Always useful to mull over these sort of things, but so many other factors come into play I think life may be too short. As with many other stats, some people love to pick and choose the stat they think is crucial. Whilst totally ignoring the one which others use to disprove it.

Worth an article though for those who love these things.

Aye, you're right there Flynn. The problem with these types of analyses is that there is far too little like-for-like data. Sample sizes even of plain "with/without" are generally small for first team players. I still find it fun though 🙂

Baines isn't the Fpl prospect he was last year, the attacking spirit and Pienaar linkups just aren't there. Good luck to those who still haven't realised.

All fine and well to present stats, but with nothing to back up the "why" it has to be put down to pure coincidence. Also, didn't Baines tee up Lukaku's last league goal...

Guys, which combo would you prefer for DGW31:

        A) RVP & Chester

        B) Aguero & Shaw

        C) Aguero & Distin (For -4)

I currently have RVP and would be using one of my FTs to switch to Aguero, meaning any other move would be a hit.

Basically if I keep RVP I can get Chester for free, if I switch to Aguero I can afford Distin, but would be for -4, alternatively I just play Shaw and don't take a hit.

I'm with you. Who are you ditching for Distin? Shaw? If you are ditching a dead player, I'd say C. If you are ditching a decent option, like Shaw, I'd say B.

@Mile Plankton: Obviously Hart has better chance of CS than Mannone, but that's somewhat offset by Mannone's increased chances of save points, bonus points and even penalties. Then factor in a 1.5M price difference, which, if used on defenders, is the difference between a ~4M defender and Azp. I think your money is better spent in any other position than GK, because you're not getting a lot for that 1.5M.

If you want Aguero you're going to have to sacrifice in midfield or defense. If you don't have faith in him, then you have tons of options:

          Ade -> Lukaku/Remy

then Chambers -> Distin/Coleman/Baines, whatever you can afford.

Or upgrade Silva/Mata -> Yaya or Lallana ->Nasri.

Thanks Demi, useful for Palace going into the closing games with few or no injuries. Nightmare from a FF point of view.

          Interesting dilemma:

          A yaya and kolarov
          B silva and zaba
          C nasri and kompany

depends how much you think Kolarov will play

            B, A, C in that order imo

If he was nailed on the A was the absolute winner.

For DGW, my 3 (fairly different) options:

After GW30: Jrod, Lallana, Fonte, Snodgrass ->

          A) Aguero, Williamson, Huddlestone, Ki
          B) Lukaku, Distin, Johnson, Sissoko
          C) Aguero, Chester, Sissoko, El Ahmadi
          D) Aguero, Chester, Sterling, Oviedo

Currently on A. If you HAD to choose one, what would it be? Muchos gracias!

Mirallas to AJohnson for a hit this GW so I can bring Yaya for the DGW, or wait and take a 8ph for the DGW bringin ing AJ, Yaya and Williamson. Also how much of a differential is Silva or Nasri to Yaya anyone looking that way and not Toure's way?

          For DGW31

Current defence: Ward, John, Olsson, Azpi, Yoshida

Planning to keep Azpi & Ward

Planning to bring in 2 among this lot for Yoshida & Olsson/John - Kolarov, Distin, Flanagan, Williamson, NailedOnHullDefender

          Please choose 2 among them.

          Thanks!

For the DGW which pair would you prefer:

          A) Distin + Gerrard
          B) Baines + Sterling
          C) Coleman + Nolan
