West Ham’s summer of restructuring continued last week with the acquisition of left-back Aaron Cresswell from Ipswich Town. The 24-year-old arrives on a five-year contract and follows Mauro Zarate and Cheikhou Kouyaté to the club as Sam Allardyce looks to improve upon a series of displays which saw the Hammers finished in 13th spot in 2013/14, just seven points clear of the drop zone:

Discussing his move with the club’s official website, the defender is hoping to continue the exploits which made him such a valuable asset at both ends of the pitch for the Portman Road outfit last term:

“I’m very excited to have signed here. It’s a massive club and I can’t wait to get ready for the season ahead. When I knew West Ham were interested it was an easy decision to make! Everyone knows it’s a massive club and a couple of years down the line they’ll have the new stadium too…It’s everyone’s ambition to play in the Premier League, and to play in front of 35,000 week in week out is a dream come true for me…I like to think I’m a modern day full back. I like to attack, try to get balls in the box and if I get a couple of goals or assists that’s a little bonus, but as a defender it’s defend first.”

The History

A product of the Tranmere Rovers youth academy, the highly-rated defender started his career with the Merseyside club back in November 2008. After playing 27 times over his first couple of campaigns, Cresswell established himself as a key player for Tranmere in 2010/11 and featured in 43 of their 46 League One games – having produced six goals and seven assists for the club, he was snapped up by Ipswich in the summer of 2011.

Cresswell handled the step up to the Championship seamlessly. During his time with the Tractor Boys, he played 132 league matches – missing just six games – and, although he was voted the club’s Player of the Year in his debut campaign, there’s no doubt that his most attacking displays arrived last term. The defender’s first two years at Portman Road delivered four goals and 10 assists but in 2013/14, he stepped up considerably – two goals and 14 assists earning him a place in the Championship Team of the Season and convinced Big Sam to splash the cash.

The Prospects

Given his recent record at Ipswich, Cresswell’s arrival to the Premier League is likely to bring him onto Fantasy managers’ radars for the season ahead. After his side struggled in the final third of the pitch in 2013/14, Allardyce has been tasked with introducing a more attacking style of play and the pacey left-back certainly affords the Hammers a more dynamic option down the flank.

One point of note is that Cresswell was handed the majority of set-pieces and corners by his former club, with his dead-ball delivery fundamental to those 14 assists last term. It remains to be seen whether he’ll be quite so prominent for West Ham but if Big Sam grants him a fair share, the 24-year-old could be poised for an impressive first campaign in the top-flight.

Allied with Cresswell’s attacking forays and delivery from out wide is a resilience that produced 14 clean sheets for the Hammers last term – only five teams managed more. Bearing in mind that West Ham’s defenders served up a combined three goals and not a single assist over the entirety of the previous campaign, it certainly suggests that the former Ipswich man could be the best route into Allardyce’s backline, with the likes of George McCartney and Joey O’Brien falling down the pecking order as a result of his arrival.

With home games against Spurs and Southampton supplemented by trips to Palace and Hull in the opening four, Big Sam’s new-look side certainly have the chance to get their campaign off to a promising start. A cost of £5.2m in the Sky Sports game is very enticing and providing he’s as reasonably priced across the Fantasy games, Cresswell may well find himself subject to early investment, with the upcoming pre-season friendlies likely to indicate his chances of grabbing a share of dead-ball situations for the season ahead.

      Same.

7 playing defenders. Around 4 mids. Load up on players in the first game after looking at the lineups, and have solid Germans/Argentinians as backups.

I'm beginning to worry about Liverpool now, especially as a supporter. With Suarez seemingly out the door and a big cash sum heading our way, what world class players have we brought in to replace his insanity and talent?

Lambert for the money was a great deal as a backup, Lallana to me seems overpriced, and Emre is a good long term prospect, but not going to be a world beater as a defensive player.

Spurs made the same mistakes last year, throwing money at good players, but not necessarily great, and it didn't achieve what they wanted, and I fear the same is happening with Pool.

Sanchez is on his way to Arsenal, so in this case where are the signs of imminent signings from others that have done well in the world cup? Shaqiri? Ricardo Rodriguez?

Suppose Liverpool go through the same period that Arsenal did, and we have a burnt out Sturridge, no Coutinho, Henderson or Sterling (Like Giroud, Ozil, Ramsey and Walcott).

The attack begins to look a bit weak there in my opinion.

And no I am not expecting/suggesting Henderson and Ramsey are the same FPL wise, but both are important to each team in their own way!

Markovic is quality and could really flourish under Rodgers. Emre Can is allegedly good but I don't think anyone really knows just how good he is.

Liverpool need another striker who can start, Sturridge can't be relied on for 60 games this season and Lambert, Aspas and probably Borini aren't good enough for second choice. There isn't an obvious Suarez replacement available which is a big issue.

The Lovren pursuit is a bit strange, good player but the only advantage he has over Agger is he can play on the right side, not exactly worth 18 million. Still need two full backs as well.

Given how everyone else at the top has improved, Liverpool need to get moving.

yes Liverpool definitely need another striker who can start, especially considering Sturridge's injury track record

Yeah but you may not want to be revising your entire lineup at the last minute when you can't find a 3 point starting GK and have no extra $ for Krull

I'll have a starting lineup ready to go and a couple of backup lineups ready so I can change reasonably quickly when the 3/4 lineup is announced.
Have Depay, Willian, Huntelaar at the moment

    * "Everyone was able to train today, including Hummels. Some only trained individually."

    * No concrete statement on Hummels' condition

Last night, however, Oliver Bierhoff said that Hummels' substitution "was also a small precautionary measure, as you don't want to risk anything. I expect that it won't be a problem for the final".

I might regret saying this come Sunday night but I don't think the Germans are going to be as dominant in the final as most think. yes German has immense quality and had one of the best world cup displays in the semifinal, and yes Argentina haven't been incredibly inspiring and we have yet to see Messi really take over a game but I still think the final will be a very close affair

bar two results in which their opposition fell apart (Thrashing of Portugal in which Pepe got a red card, and the destruction of Brazil in which Brazil looked hopeless defensively without their captain), Germany haven't won any of their other games by more than a goal. Drew against Ghana and were actually losing for part of the match, only beat the United States by a Goal, it took until extra time for them to beat Algeria, and only a set piece goal separated them and France

while I would not be surprised by a Germany win in the slightest, I think that it will be a much closer game than most think. and even if Germany dominate the match, they could be punished by a moment of Messi brilliance or a clinical strike from Higuain, Aguero, or Lavezzi

Depends on how much fun you're looking to have. For me, 541 still makes the most sense. Can't see the 3/4 game having more than 3 goals in it MAYBE 4 total. In this case defenders will still be king with this dumb scoring system. Would go 7 defenders, take a couple attacking punts in the first game and go with the usual Lahm, Mascherano etc.

Pretty much, with the addition of Lahm and Mascherano in there as well for the Sunday. I think picking one of each Brazil and Netherlends defence though is a wise move just in case there's an unexpected cleanie/shed loads of RB's.

I'd say he did well at the WC. I remember much better Dutch squads than this and he got them all the way to penalties in the semi. Seemed quite tactically astute at times. Can't be worse than Moyes.

name me one team that played well v Costa Rica.

Navas had more saves to make in that game then he did in his previous 4.

I spoke to some Dutch guys at work today and all the talk over there is Man Utd will only be in for Dutch defenders. Indi Janmaat etc. Flat back 6 is on its way to OT

The semi finals of a World Cup is a poor display?

Good end results, but poor display I think. Not that I particularly agree.
