Selection

The start of the season saw Nani as something of an outside bet when weighing up midfield options, with Antonio Valencia the favoured Man United pick. Nani had made just 23 league appearances the previous season compared to Valencia’s 34, and was on the pitch for 1,000+ minutes less; with a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 8.0, his selection was simply too much of a risk for many Fantasy managers.

Valencia’s injury in United’s Champions League match with Rangers, however, changed matters completely and allowed Nani to step up and cement his place as a first-team regular. By gameweek 10, he’d hit double figures four times and had failed to score or assist in just three matches for United. Nani continued to pick up the points hauls and ended with campaign on 198 pts, one of the most surprise top-scoring FPL players in recent seasons.

The Statistics

That 8.0 starting price quickly rocketed, with a leap of 0.9 from gameweek 3-10 indicative of the winger’s growing popularity amongst Fantasy managers. It’s difficult to pick out one single week as his stand-out performance; with eight double points haul for the season in total, Nani offered a brilliant consistency for a long period of time, though it’s worth noting that seven of those eight big scores came at Old Trafford.

He eventually finished the season on 9 goals, 18 assists -the Premier League’s top creator- and was rewarded for his displays in the shape of 25 Bonus Points but, despite this, Nani’s points returns definitely tailed off from gameweek 27; he didn’t find the net from early February onwards and failed to either score or assist in his last five starts for United.

The Prospects

There’s no doubt a fit-again Valencia will raise question marks over both Nani’s number of starts and points returns next season. It’s no coincidence that Nani’s above-mentioned drop in form coincided with Valencia’s return from injury in gameweek 30 and perhaps suggests diminishing returns when the pair take to the field together.

One factor in his favour is Nani’s adaptability; whereas Valencia is suited solely to the right wing role, Nani is just as effective on either flank and his Old Trafford points returns illustrate just how devastating he can be at home. Next season could prove a real source of frustration in that respect; Nani will see a hefty jump in price (10.0 to 10.5 seems more than possible) but with the chances of decreasing game time likely, could prove too pricey a player to have if he’s not guaranteed starts. A repeat of those double-figure points returns, then, could resultantly catch out those Fantasy managers without him in their squads.

Good point that about Valencia affecting Nani's output. One of my better managerial decisions was selling Nani in gwk 31.

Whereas VDV will be on my start sheet, Nani definitely will not.

Midpark could be: Taraabt, VDV, Kuyt, Lampard, Adam.

Well Lampard covers Chelski. I'm not sure who from the ARS midpark I'd go for tbh.

Fabregas on the wane; Nasri is Fab-affected; Walcott is no definite starter; so that leaves...?

Same with Utd. Who would you go with from their midpark?

Anyone else think it's rather refreshing that reports linking Ashley Young to United are saying that the fee is around £16m? I mean I am still not 100% sure on young Ashley as a prospect but having seen him play this season more than others, there is definitely some major talent there, I am just not sure about him for some reason. Still, in this day and age of inflated and ridiculous transfer fees, £16m for a player like Young is a sign to me things are going in the right direction again and away from £80m transfers, that being said, Gareth Bale valued over £50m by Spurs, good one.

I disagree, it's cheap for an established premiership player, only 25, and a set piece specialist, something we are sorely lacking, but then, that's just my opinion

JU - not that we can trust any newspaper, but it does seem that the Young trsfr will happen to ManU.

This will obviously affect Nani's gametime even more?

On the fantasy side I suppose Albrigton/Downing(if he stays) become more attractive and AYoung less with Roonpig on Peno's.

Reports are strongly linking him alright, as much as I love Scholes too I am glad he called it a halt, I think for the past couple of seasons by virtue of the fact he was around has provided a false sense of secutiry for Fergie, now they will definitely need to shop for a few midfielders

Ok, it's a bit pedantic, but:

Technically, while England isn't in the European Union, it's still located within Europe (as a continent), so they are actually useful in some places in Europe.

Secondly, it was actually a good design, and IIRC, the US type were pretty crap. It's only in recent years that surge protection in American homes has prevented the possibility of damage directly to the appliance in question. I can't substantiate this though.

The fact that Manchester United got to the Champions League final would indicate that they're good in Europe, and going back to the earlier point about England being in the continent of Europe, ...

You know what, I can't be bothered to continue, I'm boring myself.

It's a good design but in the rest of Europe they use a 2 pin plug 😉 It's not the damage problem, the fact the plug won't fit.

And this might be a stupid point, but we are in the European Union?

Manchester City was bad enough for rotation last season. Next season it could be much worse. Hart and Tevez, barring illness must have been the only guaranteed starters you wanted. After that, who else is sure of a place?

However, we could conceivably see a champions league squad and a league squad.

What are the chances that we'll get a taste of things to come pre-season?

smart decision by fergie in my eyes.
        1. Berbatov had very poor European form this year
        2. Berbatov is a very poor impact sub
        3. Fergie clearly realised/believed the way to beat barca was with an offside breaking player like chicharito, to have a cokmpletly different player, a different plan on the bench is useful in many games, but would have given us nothing against barca. Owen was a suitable sub, different to chicha, but effective in finishin, breaking the line , not to upset the team too much but maybe get us that winning goal
        4. Berba is a hold ball player, united wudn be given chances to hold it in the barca half, we would have seen a very frustrated berba figure, instead we need quick passing and moving.

And im a fan of berba too, he just didnt suit the game and fergie knew it!

its like saying how he could he bench nani, players player of the year, when really that was an obvious choice too..

What you're essentially saying is that Berbatov should leave because he's not suited to playing against Barcelona?

Are we going to play them every week though.

No, he's essentially saying why Fergie didn't play him, or put him on the bench in the final.

You mean the same berb that saved ManU's season when rooney couldnt find the net? The least he could had done was to include him in the team sheet
          P.S: Nani's replacement[valencia] had a horrible game

Fergie got his tactics so spectacularly wrong, and didn't even change it at halftime when it was obvious we were getting battered. Very odd.

Didn't you want him to play 4-4-2 like he did?

I'm not really sure any changes would have worked. We were losing that game with whatever team we put out.

Where on earth did you get this from? I didn't mind him starting 442 as it was the team that got us there. BUT: It was so obviously not working it should have been changed. It was a miracle we were 1-1 at HT.

seen arguements either way for changing at half time.
they should have changed as depite it being 1-1 it was one of the falsest scorelines ever at that time, they were destroyed for 35 minutes.
they shouldn't have changed asthey didn't have a lead so why bring out a more defensive team for the second half? that just smells of defeat, let's play for the draw etc

433 isnt a defensive team. Hence why we beat Arsenal time and time again hitting them on the break after soaking up their pass pass pass routine. The warning was there for fergie with the 4411 at the emirates.

Counter argument is we played 5 in the middle in 2009, but at least we made chances in that game.

i'm with you there, unless you get the ball it doesn't matter if you have 8 strikers or 1. i would have brought anderson and nani on at half time for park and hernandez. playing park instead of nani was ferguson saying "i'm worried more about you than you are about me"

Yeah, Park was playing because of his running and tackling ability like vs Chelsea. However, the Chelsea middle 3 isn't anywhere near as mobile or fluid as Barca (lampard lols) so he was pulled out of position and generally chasing shadows. The team after HT should have been imo:

                  VDS
                  Fabio Rio Vidic Evra
                  Anderson Carrick Park
                  Valencia Rooney Nani

Still, pointless thinking about it really. Barca are good enough to beat any formation!

I wonder when the Mayor of Swansea will give the keys of the City (plus a couple of free sheep) to Phil Dowd?

Absolutely gutted. After the vultures have finished picking over the carcass of the squad, it will take years for the club to recover.

Fantastic effort though, worth the flight cost just to witness the 20 minutes in the second half when the width of a post denied what would have been an amazing comeback.

Not entirely, our aging back line were too slow to deal with Swansea's pace.

However, Dowd awarded more than 3 times more fouls in favour of Swansea over the course of the game and all of the key decisions went their way.

I haven't seen the replays, but it's almost impossible to look at these things objectively.

I didn't think that there was a such a big difference between the teams in the first half, Swansea probably had 4 shots and scored 3. Mind you, we made some really poor decisions defensively and got punished.

the ref had a good game imo..he didn't sent off khizanishvili for the sake of the final and swans could have had another pen when khizanishvili again fouled swansea player again later in the 1st half...2 pens were nailed on pens and noone can have any complaint about that...
u guys made a great comeback in the 2nd half and as u said that the post denied u guys from an amazing comeback but overall u cannot have any complain as swans were the better team overall apart from the first 15 mins of each half...blaming a ref who didn't sent off ur player to make it a good final is a bit daft imo...

I know it happens all the time, but it still doesn't necessarily mean it's right.

It's like in the first leg between Swansea and Notts Forest. When that kid Taylor got sent off in the first minute, all the commentators were saying that the referee should have let him off because it was 'so early on in the game', when a red card offence is a red card offence no matter whether it's in the first or the eighty-fifth minute!

Unlucky about yesterday RD.. Still, making the play-off final is a pretty impressive achievement considering where you were midway through last season (and this season to a lesser extent).

                THanks Jamie.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Liegertwood sign a 3 year deal last week, which is good as he has been really solid all season. The obvious one is Shane Long, he has already said he will leave if we didn't get promoted and I understand Everton are showing interest. Jimmy Kebe will probably go as well, McAnuff, Federici (although we have a ready replacement in McCarthy).

I hope we can hang on to them, but am not at all confident.

Nah, don't agree with that. Playoff defeat is horrible, but I'd never say get rid of the playoffs. In a 24 team league, if you don't have playoffs then 75% of the games from February onwards are pointless.

It's pretty much impossible to have a "better" team than then, but it's certainly possible to have a team good enough to stop them in the CL (as I fully expect mourinho to next season).

It's based on the performance in Europe in the last 5 years I think, so I guess this is the fairest way there is, even though I agree it doesn't really make sense to split the qualification in champions/non-championships and later on just forget about that difference.

I understand how they do it I just don't like it. If they aren't going to go back to the old way of just allowing champions in the competition then the least they should do is allow ALL champions to qualify directly to the group stages, and ALL non-champions to have to go through all the qualifying rounds for the remaining places.

I don't mean they'll do better in the competition, i mean they won't do any worse then we did against Barca. Saying that, we only lost 4-3 on aggregate and had a player ridiculously sent off, so they won't do any worse then YOU did against them 😉

As for the Europa League, lets be honest, they weren't really trying, CL is a different story, everyone raises their game.

Still, only 4-3 on aggregate 🙂

Im talking unbiased sense as usual. Give City some credit! They've finished 3rd, well..joint 2nd if you don't include goal difference. They also won the FA Cup (knocking you out in the process, which is not easy.) It's impressive considering they have soo many new players who needed time to gel. Their midfield trio of Silva, Yaya and De Jong would walk into any starting 11 in the Prem. They could dominate games next season.
