Arsenal yesterday announced their first foray into the summer transfer market, with the news that Ivory Coast star Gervinho will join the club later this week from French champions Lille “subject to a regulatory process”.

The move comes as little surprise; the Gunners are long-term admirers of the 24 year-old and speculation has been rife for a number of months that the player‘s move to London was imminent.

While the move is, undoubtedly, a positive one, it has been somewhat overshadowed by the ongoing transfer sagas involving both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. Arsenal are currently on a pre-season tour of Malaysia right now and when asked of the pair’s respective futures yesterday, Arsene Wenger remained positive that the two will stay for next season, though the rumours are likely to run and run.

In keeping with the low-key nature of Gervinho’s arrival, Wenger only had this to say:

“Gervinho has just joined up for training today at London Colney. He signed last Thursday, and has just come back from his holidays.”

The Statistics

Gervinho began his career as an 18 year old at Belgian side KSK Beveren where, over the course of a couple of seasons, he scored 14 goals and made 5 assists in 61 league appearances. A move to Ligue 1 followed, and two seasons at Le Mans brought the Ivorian 8 goals and 12 assists from 67 games before Lille came calling.

Once again, Gervinho lasted the two years, with last season, in particular, showing a marked increase in his ability to effect a game. On his way to helping the club win their first domestic double for 57 years, Gervinho was the only player to hit double figures for both goals and assists for Rudi Garcia’s all-conquering side, with 15 and 10 respectively.

He broke into the Ivory Coast side in 2008 and has subsequently played for his country 25 times, scoring 6 times and making 2 assists.

The Prospects

Lille’s favoured formation was 4-3-3 last term and, with an emphasis on attack either home or away, Gervinho was given license to wreak havoc. Predominantly right-footed, he played right of a front three for the majority of the campaign and may offer Theo Walcott competition for a starting berth in Wenger’s first XI, though 11 starts wide left last season suggest he will offer Arsenal more versatility.

Gervinho’s prospects for 2011/12 will clearly be influenced by the futures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri. In the unlikely event of both players staying at the Emirates this season, his number of starts will perhaps, initially, be limited, but if the Arsenal skipper goes, Nasri could take over in the central role and leave a space wide left for Gervinho to make his own.

Despite missing just one league game last season, Andrei Arshavin scored just six goals and a series of lacklustre performances suggest the Russian is anything but a guaranteed starter. If both Nasri and Fabregas depart, however, Gervinho seems set for a starting role. The fact that the Arsenal boss was in the market for Velez Sarsfield playmaker Ricardo Alvarez indicates he is looking to fill any gap created by Fabregas’ possible departure to Barcelona and, despite missing out to Inter for the player‘s signature, Wenger is clearly intent on replenishing his squad.

In terms of pricing, Nasri came in at 7.5 and Walcott 7.0 last season and it’s likely FPL will rank Gervinho along the same lines when the prices for next season are revealed later this month. It’s clear Arsenal have bagged themselves a player that will offer creativity and goal threat in equal measure, though just how quickly he will adapt to the more physical Premier League, only time will tell.

Why can’t the scouts that run this site let us know the opening date? Why do they keep it as a secret?! It’s why we pay £12 to know things like these in advance relating to the FPL!!

Taarabt (providing he stays at QPR)

Hutton (providing he moves to Villa)

    Hi there

Now that the season has ended, your team, leagues and any forum messages will shortly be reset, as will all of the player values and positions where appropriate.

The new game will start around mid-July, although there is no fixed date as yet. You will need to select another team. However, your login details will remain the same. For league administrators there will also be an option to restart your leagues.

Look forward to seeing you again next season!

    Regards
    FPL

Just thinking about things that have happened in FPL in the past that have annoyed me more than the usual errors.

    1) When Arteta tried to play a through ball v Wigan, Bramble then tried to help the ball back to the keeper, got it (surprise!) horribly wrong, someone (can't remember who) nipped in and scored and they awarded Arteta an assist. When I complained they said "well that was where Arteta was trying to play the pass so we have decided to award the assist."

    2) When Chris Samba got subbed on 56 minutes on the last day of the 09/10 season - lost me a mini league by 2 points.

3)When Cuellar was given an assist after his header was cleared off the line by a defender and the rebound was poked in. Sent about 40 emails, all ignored.

This is good therapy actually, I now don't even want the poxy game to open...!

not a problem with FPL but still hugely annoying, the worst part was when Drogba was warming up to come on as the last sub, then some Chelsea defender/midfielder got injured so had to be replaced instead.

      Firefox.

Internet Explorer is just cack, it seems to eat uneccessary resource, and just does a million little things to piss me off. Chrome is also pretty hungry, and I had issues with it forgetting the proxy settings. Plus it actually gets those settings from IE (which doesn't have the same problem).

Firefox however, seems to do everything right. It saves my tabs if the computer switches off, it HAS tabbed browsing, and every improvement in general seems to have come through firefox and be copied by everyone else a few months later.

Chrome and Firefox both have their benefits - Firefox comes with a load of neat plugins to download but Chrome is smoother and each tab is run separately so if one tab crashes it doesn't make it all go down.

If you're on a Mac I suggest sticking with Safari.

I've got a few players in mind, but they're all too dependent on other factors. As things stand right now, RVP is my only cert, and I'd even have to rethink that if either Nasri or Fab do leave.

Will probably give Holt a go given Norwich's early fixtures, and will almost certainly be rotating the cheapest playing defender from Sunderland, Villa and Fulham. But again, that could change with happenings in pre-season.

hahah, I just looked at Millwall's. Actually trying too hard. It's not badly drawn, but poorly designed.

I actually think Spur's is alright. It doesn't conform to the whole coat-of-arms thing, and it's simple with one colour. I'd say it's one of the stronger ones.

Wolves have had many logos. The best looking badges were used in the 70's and early 80's. The current logo is acceptable to me, you can't go too wrong with the Wolf head, but they managed to cock it up in the early 90's.

I'm not sure you can get anything useful from the subs bit... nothing wrong with having loads of points on the bench if you get more on the pitch... but would be interested to know the captaincy ratio.

But yeah, if I thoguht it was that important I'd have done it myself once in the last 6 months. But would still like to see it.

Betting on outright winners in golf tournaments is not really worth it, just wondered who people were backing to do well. I'd love Westwood to win it. Donald's on form.

Yeah have a couple bets on already. I usually don't back a winner in golf just to finish in the top 20 so I have Ishikawa @ 6/1 for top 20 place and Colsaerts @ 5/1 for top 20 place. And I have John Daly e/w @ 1000/1.

EW bets on players oner 100/1 are my personal favs had ys yang for the us open the other week paid out nicely. think il have a punt on bubba watson at 110/1 seems pretty good! Ishikawa as mentioned above is a good en as well. just had a look and rory is 11/1 to be leader after 1st day last year he shot the lowest score ever on a major first round 63!

number 10 mourad meghni was meant to be the new zidane just because he dribbled a bit like him, not as well just because style wise he made people think, "oh that guy looks a bit like zidane when he has the ball."

he's a pro now but plays on and off for 'ok teams and has never come any where near fulfilling his hype. there was an episode of the clairefontaine documentary/series and all the young players were lauding him as a god like figure, they all wanted to be like him.

Another day, still no FPL. Sigh.

This is a poor showing from that site, they know that 2.5m ppl play this game & are therefore waiting on it to open.

Just put an opening date on the site!!!

Also, I support Arsenal & its time for Wenger to leave.

Sell Fabregas, he doesnt want to be there & wont play to his potential. Use the money to replace him, problem finished.

Offer Nasri their limit on his transfer, if he says no, sell him, buy someone new for a similar price - NOT DOWNING!!!

Then buy a world class centre back.

Bendtner is being sold, & gervinho will go to the African Nations, RVP WILL get injured, only remaing striker is Chamack, who Wenger wouldnt play after xmas last year...

So we need a striker too.

Sort it out Wenger, or just leave.

Thats right, he is Morrocan, so we will only have an injury prone striker for that month!!!

So its a strong possibility that we could have no strikers!!
That happened 2 seasons ago, Arshaven had to play upfront!!

If that happens again, then its disgraceful management!!

Wenger buy players, or close the door on the way out.

Couldn't disagree more with most of this. I'm all for binning off Bendtner but think the anti-Wenger chat is madness. Walcott and Vela can play up front next season and both have goals in them, plus Emmanuel-Thomas and a couple of others coming up through the ranks. RVP may or may not get injured. He's been unlucky but can hopefully put this behind him. Not saying we'll get 50 games out of him but who knows. African nations is not until January anyway so we can buy in the transfer window if necessary. There is no player out there in the same league as Nasri or Fabregas for the same money being talked about as potential transfer fees. It's gutsy from Wenger but clearly he is saying and we will win a trophy. If (big if) RVP, Vermaelen, Wilshere, Cesc + Nasri each play 30 games in the PL this season, I think that we've got a very good chance of winning it.

Sorry but I disagree completely. Nasri & Fab dont wnat to be there, Vale & Walcott arent up to the top 4 standard. Right now they need RVP to stay fir and Gervinho to be on top form to finish 4th, Arsen needs to get rid of players who are demoralising for the dressing room.

I agree with 4fabregas - too many people getting on Wengers back. He has been extremely unlucky with injuries. Football isn't champ man, throwing money at things doesn't always make it better.

Also - Walcott is top 4 quality, maybe not always to start games but he's an amazing player to come off the bench

Firstly, I think Wenger is a great manager, however, he has become too stubborn, set in his ways & is now going against logic, almost to try & prove a point.

Walcott is supposed to be a striker, Wenger never plays him there?!!! Walcott is injury prone too. HE WILL GET INJURED.

Vela loaned to West Brom, did crap, could hardly even get in their starting 11!! Emmanuel Thomas is simply not experienced enough to be relying on to challenge for a title!!

RVP WILL get injured. FACT. Arsenal need to be prepared for that.

Buy in January?!! Why wait? Cup tied!! Then needs time to adjust, settle in etc. No logical sense in waiting.

          Fabregas replacements - Kaka, Sneidjer
Nasri replacements - Robben, NZogbia even

Wenger makes empty promises every year about trophies!!

Players who will get injured this year:

RVP, Walcott, Fabregas, Rosicky, Djourou, Vermalen, Diaby, Gibbs.

Also, Traore as LB cover for Gibbs?!! Completely wrong.

Wenger has been saying that he knows Arsenal need CBs, but that he will only bring in players that will improve the team.

CB's I feel that would improve the team:

Hangeland, Cahill, Dann, Huth, Samba, Dunn

            Plus many others outside England.

say arsenal do buy another striker and rvp stays fit for 30 games next season, then what? you've got another good pricey striker on the bench with chamakh most of the time. a striker who is good enough to please the fans wont be cheap enough or be willing enough to be second fiddle.
it's 1 month that there will be a potential problem, gervinho can play up front but ivory coast should qualify, it's very possible that morocco won't even qualify for the ACON. so buy a third good striker for a 1 month period? what about the other 23 months in the next two years where you're spending good money and good wages on a player who is becoming increasingly frustrated that he's watching rvp from the bench almost every week. i agree that vela and emmmanuel thomas aren't good enough but buying a striker for one month is madness especially as it's based on rvp being injured at a specific time

Arsenal cant play with 2 strikers?!! I think Arsenal would be a stronger team if they started with RVP & Benzema (for example).

I didnt say to buy a striker to only cover for that month. I said we'd only have one striker for that month (RVP), I dont think that is the correct approach for a new season!!

That is crazy though, you suggest that Wenger goes out and buys Robben, Benzema, Kaka and Sneijder when there is nothing suggesting that they'd want to go to Arsenal.

How easy do you think it is to sign star players?

I think it's very likely Wenger will spend over £100m on these players. History suggests.. oh wait a second.

So I am stupid for showing ambition?

If Arsenal dont buy these type of players & lose Nasri & fabregas, RVP will want to leave too etc

Then, with other teams strengthening, Arsenal will not qualify for the CL, will struggle to win any trophy, attendance will get lower, i.e Arsenal will lose money!!

Arsenal need to speculate to accumulate.

They have a new owner also, a billionaire, will he want them to go backwards??

                  I think not.

That's not showing ambition, that's just naming players who are really good. Why not chuck Ronaldo or Messi in as well?

                it's not bad.

                this is probably better though:

                alves, pique, kompany, evra
                xavi, iniesta, fabregas
                robben, rvp, ronaldo

lol. If Arsenal struggle to match Nasri's expected wages then you are not going to get Robben & Kaka! This is just pie in the sky, go back to playing champ man!

Have to say you should change your name to righth.

Agree with so many off your points in your last 2/3 posts on AFC/Wenger.

I've wanted him out for 3 years now. 3 years that have been wasted - same old, same old. The squad is nowhere near good enough and we do get fobbed off with Wenger trying to big up players who are clearly not good enough.

Funny given how good they were supposed to be, he finally seems to be accepting that Almunia and Bentdner are not good enough. Hopefully he'll realise that Mannone, Squillaci, Gibbs, Sagna, Denilson, Rosicky, Ramsey, Chamakh and Vela are awful too.

By the way Wilshere and Walcott are massively overrated in my opinion.

Putting the prices up in the summer was a huge mistake and by the end of the season there will be some interesting goings on at the Emirates. There will be either a change at Board level or a change of manager, otherwise there will be some serious backlash from Arsenal fans.

            Enough is enough.

LOL - you say, 'RVP WILL get injured. FACT.' & 'Walcott is injury prone too. HE WILL GET INJURED'. Then you suggest buying Robben!

Firstly Robben is much more injury prone than those 2, secondly maybe RVP will be over his injury problems, you just don't know this.

Players get injured, it happens, but it is ridiculous to say, 'RVP, Walcott, Fabregas, Rosicky, Djourou, Vermalen, Diaby, Gibbs.' will all get injured

Does your second point not contradict your first point???

Maybe Robben is over his injury problems too!

I think they hould sell Fabregas if the right bid comes in.

He's too injury prone to build a team around. There, I said it 🙂

wenger wouldn't play chamakh because he's not as good as rvp, it's that simple. he's a decent back-up striker
