The international break beckons, the Fantasy Premier League wildcards will be fluttering and after today’s games, there’s little doubt where you can find the first profit-making bandwagon.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s two goals against Villa at the Lane today won the game and will surely fetch him his second maximum FPL Bonus Point haul of the season. The Dutchman has arrived in the Premier League, hit the ground running and has established himself as not only a creative force but also a direct and devastating threat on the oppositions goal.

So the Van der Vaart “transfer in” is a no brainer. Well not quite. Gareth Bale appears to have hogged the limelight around here in the last 24 hours and he suddenly becomes a consideration again when it comes to coveting his influential team-mate.

Can any Fantasy lineup afford to have two Tottenham players, let alone two of their midfield? Those Fantasy Managers who have resisted the charms of Bale or even shipped out the Welshman over the frustration of his ever-changing role, can turn to Van der Vaart without hesitation. Bale owners however have a conundrum to consider.

During a kind run of fixtures having two Spurs players would be palatable but Redknapp’s side face three away games in the next four, one of which is at Old Trafford. Their home fixture meanwhile has them facing Everton – a side who have conceded just two goals in four away games and who sealed the season-starting win today at Birmingham. That won’t be easy.

Between these four fixtures, Spurs will face a Champions League tie at Inter for undoubtedly their biggest European tie so far. The fixture falls after Gameweek 8’s trip to Fulham and before the home game with Everton. Even if we felt that Van der Vaart was a rotation risk (it doesn’t look that way), he is suspended for the San Siro visit after his red against FC Twente in midweek. That will surely mean that the Dutchman is protected from being rested for both the Fulham and Everton games. The same perhaps can’t be said for Bale, who could either be rested at Fulham, or find himself at left-back once again away from home.

Is this enough to seal the fate for the 50% Bale and see thousands make the switch to jump aboard the Van dar Vaart bandwagon? Bale’s 1 point return today and his failure to notch a goal or an assist in his last five league starts, isn’t a statistic that helps his cause.

This is the knee jerk – so in-depth thinking isn’t allowed. For now there’s no doubt that Van der Vaart has become a hugely influential figure for Redknapp’s side, who having started four out of four league games since his arrival, looks to have his role well and truly cemented. Right now that role appears to allow him license to support a lone striker and provide a constant menace to opponents.

Van der Vaart will surely play the next two matches at Fulham and against Everton. Based on showings so far, he will take free-kicks, he will notch around 10 efforts on goal, he will earn Bonus Points if Spurs can win those matches. With an international break now beckoning, he will surely rise in price at least twice between now and Gameweek 8. It’s hard to deny the Dutchman’s draw.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

At the end of this week (I'd say Monday or Tuesay) There will be an article posted up announcing the 512 people that have qualified. Then opponents are drawn against each other and it continues like a H2h league. Its quite exciting.

Think I'll be on the cusp. 22 pts with Drog (c), Malouda, Alex, Arshavin and Tevez to play...

Average points so far, typical-looking lineup for the Sunday.

            Rough guess? Drog 12, Malouda 6, Alex 2, Arshavin 1, Tevez 9.

52 points. So the cut-off is likely to be 53 pts.

    Transfer advice. Bear with me!
In total I want to do:

    Jaask > 4.0 'keeper
    Konchesky > Jara
    Alex > Toure
    Bale > Etherington
    Routledge > Fabregas

Should I do it all at once with a WC or gradually? If gradually, which would you do first? Thanks for any comments.

i don't think you need to wildcard, just do whatever moves involve getting fabs in imo..

I would say gradually. Is it necessary to get rid of Konchesky or bin Alex at this stage? I can understand the need to buy Fabregas but wait until you know he is fit. You've not got too many players in that list in danger of going up or down.

      And in return:

I was planning to wild card but now I’m not so sure. Basically I want Fabregas back, Van der Vaart and Nani in. That means getting rid of Davies, Kuyt and Bale and finding the other million by downgrading Hahnemann to Al-Habsi or Krul and Steinsson to Jara.

      Should I do it?

Thanks for your advice! It;s not so much that it's necessary to lose Kon/Alex, just that it finances Fab, and I think City defence could be a real earner (never thought I'd be saying that!). WIll probably take my time though, Kon is due a fall and Toure is due a rise so might do just that tonight. Sound reasonably sensible?

As for your team. I wouldn't WC, mainly 'cause I disagree with the need to get VDV in. I know he did well today and looks a class act, but Spurs are so inconsistent, especially with Europe as a factor (certain game against Wigan recently!). Look how vital Bale was a few weeks ago and what he's done since. Since you have so much in the bank, how about working in Fab and Nani for now without the WC? Losing Kuyt and Bale.

No need to wildcard if you only want to bring in Etherington, Toure, Fabregas. Do it gradually - I'd do Toure first for Blackpool away, then Jara in GW 8 and bench him, no transfers in GW9 and use the two transfers in GW 10 to bring in Fab, Etherington and 4m keeper for a 4 point hit.

I know it's been discussed a lot but I don't entirely understand the 'protected' issue... If he fell by just 0.1 more then I could squeeze him in for a 4 pt hit this week and next week. But is that impossible because the FPL site recognises him as injured?

Deep down I don't think that either of them should be...

Wigan had completely lost possession when Berra touched ball, and Davies' through ball had an enormous deflection on it.

BUT, if they're being lenient with the N'Zogbia one, then they bloody well should be with the Davies one too!

I'm not trying to be controversial (at least not this time!) but I really don't think that VDV has been that good for Spurs. Sure he's scored a good few goals, and they have been taken very well, but with the number of shots he takes every game it's hardly a surprise that he's scoring well...

Bale wasn't nearly as involved today as I'd have liked him to be, and I think that a major part of that was because every time they got into decent positions VDV, or Jenas for that matter, would take a shot from 30 yards, rather trying to pass to it to team-mates in better positions...

He's undoubtedly a very talented player, but he's a very selfish one. Even worse than Lampard! 😉

Yeah, without a shadow of a doubt. If he hadn't ballsed up the penalty in midweek then he's be a ridiculously good FPL option. Although with Pav looking so poor today, he will most likely be back on the bench, and VDV could be back on pens...

That's even more reason to get the guy in.

He's played only a few games for Spurs, yet he's become their main man. Taking shots, setting up chances, with time, he'll pass better, shoot better and score even more points.

He's a steal at 7.6 and practically fixture proof.

LOL. That is a scandalous comment! He hasn't played in a single difficult fixture for Spurs yet, and he hasn't done anything in the two away games that he's played!

Okay, so his away form hasn't been great so far. But simply looking at the way he controls Spurs's play means that anything that Spurs do that's decent will go through him. He's fixture proof because of his set piece dominance and possibly penalty duty?

All fair points, to be fair in most cases i've been watching highlights. But in each game he's had a few shots that have either gone in, or have taken incredible saves to keep them out.

In any case he has been more involved than Bale which raises the question.....

I'm guessing you're a Bale owner, what will you do? In fairness had Bale not been heavily involved in wednesday i would have made the transfer but i held fire on that basis, if he isn't going to keep it up though VDV looks essential. Will probably give it a week or two myself!

Bale simply isn't a natural goalscorer. In the past 6 months he has had plenty of excellent opportunities, mainly one-on-one, and he has barely scored any of them. VDV unquestionably is a natural goalscorer though, his record more than proves that.

To be honest I've always been a reluctant Bale owner. I started the season off without him, but was virtually forced into getting him in after he scored 15 at Stoke, and was owned by around 40% of people. Now that people seem to be getting rid of him, I'm more than happy to do the same.

I need money to get Fabregas in for Gerrard, so will get rid of one of Etherington, Bale, Malouda... Most likely Bale at the moment, but unfortunately it doesn't give me enough money to get VDV in... Which may not be a disaster with the fixtures Spurs have coming up.

I kept faith with Bale today but as I'm wildcarding I will make the switch for Rafa.

He looks capable of big points, mixed in with the odd two-pointer, and as he proved today he's captain material.

Speaking of BAE, he was pretty much Spurs' best player today. (Although I missed the Villa goal, so don't know where he was at fault for that).

Bale should stay on the wing for the foreseeable future, but it doesn't necessarily mean he'll do anything!

Obviously there is luck involved. I just think you guys think luck is 50% & skill/management is 50%. Getting off to a good start makes everything easier. Gambling on good players = good FPL score. Everyone should have a core of essential players. The differences are picking the rest of your team & playing the right players on the bench. Once behind, picking differential players compared to the core players normally extends the gap. Obviously last season everything went well for John. I think there are many better FPL players than him. He made great captain choices last season & that makes a big difference.

Is Etherington on pens and freekicks? To get Fabregas back in after international break I need to downgrade dempsey to a 6.4 midfielder and upgrade gerrard to fabs.

I already have Nani and Malouda. I was thinking about getting yaya Toure but I think maybe etherington is a pretty good long term bet?
