The international break beckons, the Fantasy Premier League wildcards will be fluttering and after today’s games, there’s little doubt where you can find the first profit-making bandwagon.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s two goals against Villa at the Lane today won the game and will surely fetch him his second maximum FPL Bonus Point haul of the season. The Dutchman has arrived in the Premier League, hit the ground running and has established himself as not only a creative force but also a direct and devastating threat on the oppositions goal.

So the Van der Vaart “transfer in” is a no brainer. Well not quite. Gareth Bale appears to have hogged the limelight around here in the last 24 hours and he suddenly becomes a consideration again when it comes to coveting his influential team-mate.

Can any Fantasy lineup afford to have two Tottenham players, let alone two of their midfield? Those Fantasy Managers who have resisted the charms of Bale or even shipped out the Welshman over the frustration of his ever-changing role, can turn to Van der Vaart without hesitation. Bale owners however have a conundrum to consider.

During a kind run of fixtures having two Spurs players would be palatable but Redknapp’s side face three away games in the next four, one of which is at Old Trafford. Their home fixture meanwhile has them facing Everton – a side who have conceded just two goals in four away games and who sealed the season-starting win today at Birmingham. That won’t be easy.

Between these four fixtures, Spurs will face a Champions League tie at Inter for undoubtedly their biggest European tie so far. The fixture falls after Gameweek 8’s trip to Fulham and before the home game with Everton. Even if we felt that Van der Vaart was a rotation risk (it doesn’t look that way), he is suspended for the San Siro visit after his red against FC Twente in midweek. That will surely mean that the Dutchman is protected from being rested for both the Fulham and Everton games. The same perhaps can’t be said for Bale, who could either be rested at Fulham, or find himself at left-back once again away from home.

Is this enough to seal the fate for the 50% Bale and see thousands make the switch to jump aboard the Van dar Vaart bandwagon? Bale’s 1 point return today and his failure to notch a goal or an assist in his last five league starts, isn’t a statistic that helps his cause.

This is the knee jerk – so in-depth thinking isn’t allowed. For now there’s no doubt that Van der Vaart has become a hugely influential figure for Redknapp’s side, who having started four out of four league games since his arrival, looks to have his role well and truly cemented. Right now that role appears to allow him license to support a lone striker and provide a constant menace to opponents.

Van der Vaart will surely play the next two matches at Fulham and against Everton. Based on showings so far, he will take free-kicks, he will notch around 10 efforts on goal, he will earn Bonus Points if Spurs can win those matches. With an international break now beckoning, he will surely rise in price at least twice between now and Gameweek 8. It’s hard to deny the Dutchman’s draw.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

    wise sirs,

my plan last week was to sit tight, not do any transfers so that i had 2 freebies once end of the intl break came.

as im considering VdV and Tevez, this means losing out on 0.4M minimum. positive side is that i can transfer out any IB injuries. worth the wait?

Not sure about penalties... I think Fuller took them ahead of him last season, but he's injured for a while so shouldn't be a problem.

I think Etherington may have taken one last season too, although I can't quite remember.

He's definitely on free kicks/corners, and if I had to guess I'd say he'd take pens too.

I was planning to get rid of him this week, but 5 assists in 7 games is pretty impressive. Certainly much better than anyone else at that price range.

Very sorry guys, quick question that's been asked on here a thousand times, couldn't see anything in the rules about it so have to bore you with it one more time! Players are protected... whilst out injured, or for the week after they return from injury? Cheers.

You won't find anything in the rules because FPL don't specify the rules regarding price changes. It's up to the nerds at FantasyTools and Fiso to 'crack the code'!

Basically, players are protected for ten days after their red/yellow flag is removed. So basically when they return from injury.

When players are injured, they aren't protected, they just need over twice as many transfers in/out to achieve a rise/fall in price.

I, probably like many others had the intention of getting Fabs in for GW8. And I know he will rake in the BP's once he's back.

But I can't help thinking that with the likes of Nani, VDV, Arteta all in the mid range, all pulling in decent totals already, maybe it's the year of the mid range? For example I could shift out Gerrard and get in Nani and VDV and still have 2.2 to use elsewhere.

Just brainstorming out on here, but interested to her your thoughts on the issue.

Agreed. Think there's every chance this could shape up to be the season of the 5 man mid...

Nani, VDV, Malouda, Arteta, N'Zog/Ethers/Bale/Walcott (once he's fit)

Hard to imagine fitting fat Frank, or even Fab back into that.

Bale screwing up even though he's on the wing,
Berbatov on for 45 but not scoring anything,
VdV getting two but not picked in my team,
It's all turning out like one big horrible bad dream.

    ...again.

It's a great time to be a Spurs fan though 🙂

The one solace I can take from Berb's 45 is he still pulled out a bonus point and apparently was United's biggest threat, and hopefully this teaches Fergie not to dick around in future.

I thought Bale played ok today but no points to show for it. The problem with Bale in FPL terms is his effectiveness is to a degree dependent upon the ability of Crouch and Pav to convert his crosses. (Pav fluffled two today). Unfortuantely for Bale-owners, Crouch and Pav are hardly the most prolific of strikers.

By contrast VdV is playing just off the front two so can feed off their little knock-downs or even their botched goal attempts.

Bale's output should pick up again when Defoe returns and VdV's points tally may suffer from having just one bean-pole centre-forward to feed off rather than two.

It is a bit harsh on him. As somone said before, he could have had plenty of assists by now but for poor finishing.

But he's not the goal threat that VdV is.

          Just a figure of speaking,

Pavlo could have netted one of his passes, and Bale roamed around the box and could easily have gotten something out of it with a tinsy bit of luck...

Instead we get rewarded with a yellow card, just seconds before the whistle is blown.

I was pretty much thinking since Fab got injured that this week I would go Dempsey to Yaya or Etherington and Gerrard to Fab.

But now Im thinking Gerrard to VDV and Dempsey to Etherington and building up the rest of my squad. Like getting some city defense. Maybe even toure at the back and hart to go with foster.

Yeah, this is what I mentioned back up the page. Fab will rake in the points, but a consistant flow of points from other members of a mid range midfield could possibly cover what he would make, plus if you had one as captain.

And then I could get in Hart or Toure for City cover without having to take out Alex.

      Interesting to think about.

I'm totally on the hype, I bought him as soon as I knew he would play for sure.

Keep in mind he is dutch, not south-american - and fits the PL very well. He has tons of experience on high level, and oozes quality.

Robinho actually delivered a very respectable first season.

Does anyone think it might be worth hanging onto Bale considering that he has scored 22 in three away matches and nine in four home matches. Are Spurs more likely to score from his assists in away fixtures?

It not his fault that the spurs strikers are so f'in screwd up otherwise he wud've had atleast an assist in every game so it really depends on others converting from his crosses/passes plus less chance of him scoring goals as i have seen him go less central in recent matches while VDV was playin.
