With Wildcards in play we’ve updated our Watchlist rankings ahead of Saturday’s deadline to offer a view on our mid-term player recommendations. As always, you can locate the full rankings by position in your right-hand menu.

The big movers can be found at the back, with the fixture schedule swinging wildly in favour of a number of teams, promoting their defensive assets. The likes of Liverpool, Stoke and Southampton all face a run of opponents which look set to offer ample opportunity to add to their clean sheet quota.

While Villa’s Brad Guzan has been the most popular keeper pick going into Gameweek 4, his evil schedule of fixtures suggests that Paul Lambert’s defence will struggle to maintain their early-season form. For our money, you’ll need to spend more over the next six Gameweeks to secure a stopper likely to bring in points – namely Liverpool’s Simon Mignolet, Stoke’s Asmir Begovic or Southampton’s Fraser Forster. Vito Manonne could offer value with an improved array of fixtures to come, while QPR’s Alex McCarthy is undboutedly one to watch given his 4.0 Fantasy Premier League price tag and propensity to pick up save points: he could be the only active first choice stopper in the 4.0 bracket if he debuts at Old Trafford.

While Branislav Ivanovic rightly remains rooted at top spot in our defender rankings, Liverpool’s Dejan Lovren and Southampton’s Nathaniel Clyne edge him close. In both cases, there are clear alternatives: Alberto Moreno and Ryan Bertrand are available in the same price bracket and should certainly be considered.

Elsewhere, we see the next six Gameweeks as the perfect window to take a chance on the attacking talents of Burnley’s Kieran Trippier. With 12 assists in Burnley’s promotion sesason, we’re expecting a spell where he emerges as a genuine option for our backlines and, given the Clarets run of fixtures, we could be set to flourish.

In midfield, Liverpool’s Raheem Sterling makes the climb to the summit with strong fixtures and form ensuring that he creeps ever closer to “essential” status. Aaron Ramsey’s knock in last night’s international seems him suffer a slight dent, although the latest noises suggest he’ll line up against City at the weekend.

Elsewhere, Southampton’s Dusan Tadic continues his ascent as he goes on recording statistics that suggest that consistent returns could be around the corner. He certainly has the fixtures to thrive.

There’s an array of lower priced talent to be considered, with Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha ousting Jason Puncheon as our weapon of choice at Selhurst Park. Tottenham’s Nacer Chadli, Sunderland’s Seb Larsson and Burnley’s George Boyd complete a cast that offer clear differentials as fourth and fifth midfield options.

There’s a degree of uncertainty up front, with the likes of Diego Costa and Daniel Sturridge nursing injuries. The latter drops out of our reckoning to be replaced by the cheaper and more “secure” Mario Balotelli, while our confidence in Costa is strong enough to see him maintained at the top of the rankings: we’ve already seen him recover from one “hamstring injury” to devastating effect.

There’s no place as yet for United’s Radamel Falcao, with Wayne Rooney still preferred as our Old Trafford striker – that situation will undoubtedly be questioned following Falcao’s debut, when we’ll have more clues on Louis van Gaal’s preferred set-up.

Arsenal’s new capture Danny Welbeck and Southampton’s target man, Graziano Pelle, share a price bracket and an ability to add effective differentials to our squads: we’re tipping both for strong returns in the next four to six Gameweeks. Indeed, with Steven Naismith, Mame Diouf and Leonardo Ulloa all making effective starts to the campaign and staking claims for our consideration over the next month, it’s clear that a big spend in attack is currently not a necessity.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

These are the questions you should be asking yourself.

Any news on Skrtel this week?

Who's a better choice out of Chadli or Henderson for a man transitioning money from DEF to MID?

    2. Reedy
      • 15 Years

Tricky one. The point has been made that there's no-one else reliable in Naismith's price-bracket if you need to swap him out, which is probably the only real drawback but something to consider. Welbeck would be safer, if just so you can downgrade him to Naismith in the event of injury.

In that case it's a tough call. For now I'm happy with Naismith, but I'll monitor Welbeck's progress. And I know that if anything happens to Naismith I'll probably have to take a hit to fix it.

    Hows this?

    Begovic - 4.0

Clyne - Moreno - Naylor/Duff/Hutton (rotate 3rd DF for fixture)
Di Maria - Fabregas - Sterling - Siggy
    Rodwell/Naismith (switch formation for fixtures)
    Balotelli - Welbeck

Just having a tinker with my WC in preparation when and IF Costa is ruled out friday, if i replace him with Aguero , it would mean downgrading Tadic to 5.9, just a thought but Valencia has caught my eye, will he play v QPR ? and what position ? And this a silly thought ?

I like it, might wait on Welbeck, but good.

Got very similar but just Falcao and Zaha instead of Aguero and Boyd, get Mccarthy in instead of Gilks i just did after reading the article .

Any wise UCL folk about? I'm in a private draft league and got the following team:

        Moya
        Carvajal, Cahill, Godin, Marcelo
        Iniesta, Rakitic, Koke
        Sturridge, Benzema, Mandzukic

Am I right to be worried about Iniesta's fantasy potential and Marcelo's starting position?
My knowledge doesn't really extend beyond the PL.

The following are unpicked = Danilo, Moreno, Azpilicueta, Rafina, Godin, Marquinhos, Benatia, Boateng Verratti, Modric, Gabi, Cabaye. Also, teams like Porto, Benfica, Athletic, Shaktar are untouched

Moreno is a bargain at 4.0 but I take it their prices don't matter in a draft. Someone said Danilo is OOP.

No, but he attacks a lot, Eliseu from Benfica is (if he is classed as defender).

Oh it was Eliseu. Mixed them up. He is a def in the game.

Iniesta must be overpriced for his returns imo.

I would keep Iniesta since you don't have any Barca. Marcelo for Eliseu OOP? I see you already have Carvajal as well. I'm not usually a coverage guy but can't find other reasons atm 😀

I regret playing my wildcard. Not because my old team was that good, but because there are way too many options now.

Should I go for Aguero? And what is the best defence combination to complete Ivanovic?

Southampton defender is your second choice. After that, a liverpool defender would be nice. With ntaylor in there too. The rest is up to you

What nationality will people be who were born in Scotland but have resided in England for a substantial amount of time in the event of a yes vote ?..Will they have their British citizenship annulled in some way or is it not an issue...?...Not followed all this much tbh..

Dunno..I've never given it much thought...I don't even know who's voting ?...Do all those Scots residing in England have a vote or just residents of Scotland (Scottish or otherwise)...

i thought that at first but its not really. Im Scottish living in Cardiff, I can vote here and affect what goes on down here so it makes sense that a welshman living in Scotland can vote in Scotland. also, I cant really expect to be able to cast votes in both places.

Thinking Ramsey out for Sterling... gives me a decent captain choice this week, Ramsey is a slight doubt anyway, then next gw I'll get Welbeck for Rooney, think Welbeck coverage covers not having Rambo slightly?

Any improvements to be made in your humble opinions? On my WC.

        Krul (Elliot)
        Ivan Moreno Clyne (Wisdom Hutton)
        DiMaria Sterling Fabregas Siggy (Boyd)
        Aguero Costa Naismith

        I'm considering:
        A) DiMaria -> Ramsey, Elliot -> Mannone
        B) Aguero, Naismith, Ramsey -> Balotelli, Rooney, Chadli

        Much obliged.

Last try for WCTM. Care to give your opinion

        Krul - McCarthy
        Ivanovic - Moreno - Clyne - PVA - Moore
        Fabregas - Ramsey - Sterling - Siggy - Boyd
        Costa - Aguero - Naismith

        A) Should I upgrade Naismith?
        B) Is the defence to expensive?
        C) Is Ramsey still a good bet?

Wait till friday with Ramsey - Naismith is good enough at this point imo - defence could get a downgrade yes, not sure if Ivan will keep it up
