After a two-week hiatus, our Friday evening analysis of the armband options in the Gameweek ahead comes around again. Our three-part approach takes in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Captain Poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

Captain Poll

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea’s Diego Costa leads the way after notching four times in his first three appearances. The Spain international once again heads into the weekend with hamstring doubts hanging over his pitch time but, after recovering from a similar problem to bag a brace at Goodison in Gameweek 3, he has earned the nod from over 29% of Fantasy managers so far as Jose Mourinho’s side welcome Swansea to the Bridge.

Despite scoring just twice in their first three matches under Louis van Gaal, United are still heavily backed for their home encounter against QPR. Radamel Falcao and Wayne Rooney sit second and fourth respectively in the Captain Poll and the Colombian’s previous ability to settle quickly in his new surrounds have persuaded 15% to select him compared to Rooney’s 13%. Harry Redknapp’s side have shipped four goals in their only road trip to date but a switch from 3-5-3 to 4-4-1-1 earned the R’s their first clean sheet of the campaign last time around.

Liverpool’s attackers are also high in our collective estimations. Raheem Sterling is the favoured option from Brendan Rodgers’ side – after scoring in two of his first three appearances, the youngster has picked up over 13% of your votes for a plum home clash with Aston Villa. With Daniel Sturridge sidelined for the Merseysiders, Mario Balotelli could be a real differential for this one, bearing in mind he’s owned by less than 6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

In spite of a testing clash with City at the Emirates, Arsenal new boy Danny Welbeck remains on the radar. A double for England against Switzerland has certainly had an impact – 3.55% of Fantasy managers fancy handing him the armband, more than either Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard for Chelsea’s encounter with Swansea.

It's genuinely difficult for me to watch the NFL. I used to love it but the conduct of the players and the concussions make me feel like a dreadful person. It's probably why I've gravitated to the premier league the last couple years.

    Lovren/Clyne/Chester (PvA, Moore)
    Sterling/Rambo/Siggy/Fab/Tadic
    Costa/Rooney/Naismith

0.6m in the bank. Rooney to Aguero (or Falcao) looks like a possible move if he tanks, but I'm holding another week before selling a guy with 37% ownership. Also debating Tadic/Naismith --> Pelle/4.5 to save cash.

I would say there's too much in midfield considering you can't play 5 every week. Maybe do without rambo till he's definitely not injured and their fixtures clear up. Chelsea Def is always good. Pelle also a good shout over naismith

Falcao + Naismith and then swap Naismith for Welbeck, when Danny settles in and Everton gets to tougher fixtures.

I say Naismith and Balo. Have a hunch that Falcao doesn't start. Naismith, as unlikely as it is that he scores again, is on a roll, and he has the better fixture.

First post on here...On a wildcard and can't decide on my team. Is my strategy of heavyweight attack & lightweight everything else a good one or too risky? I know Falcao might not get many mins this week but as a team for the next 6 weeks or so, I'm fairly happy with it.

    Krul (McCarthy)
    Moreno Clyne Pieters (Duff) (Moore)
    Fab Siggy Sterling(c) Zaha (Boyd)
    Falcao Costa Aguero

I think it's a good strategy though I'd be mildly concerned about a few of the cheaper players:

Zaha's goalscoring record isn't great but at 5.4m or whatever he's fine as a 4th midfielder - just don't know how useful he will be playing week in and week out.

Boyd should eventually start over Matty Taylor, he won't displace Arfield - who is a solid player, so at 4.4m he's fine, but you sort of want to see if he does displace Taylor before bringing him in. Again, not a big risk.

Obviously you mentioned the inherent risk w/ Falcao.

PIETERS is 5m while Wilson is 4.5m - so that extra 0.5m could really come in handy in the future - especially if you can upgrade Zaha or others down the line. Moreno is 0.5m more than Manquillo so you theoretically could save an extra 1m w/ Liverpool and Stoke's cheapest "other" starting defenders. They may not be as nailed on, but they are in form and both starting for the mid term at least.

      Good luck.

Thanks for the detailed feedback. I'll think about downgrading my defence to Wilson & Manquillo, the extra funds would come in handy if I need to upgrade Zaha at some point (I only have 0.1mill ITB right now.)

Fab will get a load of assists and be a consistent supply of points, Haz more explosive and will get some big hauls at home, in all wont be much between them

    WC team almost done!!!!

    Bego, McC
    Wisdom, Naylor, Moreno, Wilson, Ivan/Clyne?
    Siggy, Sterling, Fab, Zaha, ?
    DCosta, ?, ?

ATM I've gone, Ivan, Tadic, Naismith and RVP

But liking Clyne, Boyd, Balo and RVP

Any help would be great, also what's the feel on RVP? If I have him, I will captain him!

Has anyone else found themselves with a healthy chunk of cash in the bank? I've done the unthinkable and gone RVP.

    Schmeichel
    Pieters, Moreno, Bertrand
    Fabregas, Sterling, Siggy, Mirallas
    Costa, RVP, Adebayor

Hes guaranteed to start (falcao a risk for 90 minutes, rooney pushed back) and he still has pens. And hes a beast. Granted he doesn't warrant his price tag but if you have it spare it doesn't matter! Slapping the armband on him and closing my eyes!

I like your style.. No mention of RVP so far.. 2 seasons ago he was captain every week and remember that goal he scored in World Cup.. Top class, good luck creative

Bruce > Clyne for a hit? It's either that or play PVA or Wisdom this week.

Rubbish advice. Not saying that he DEFINITELY take the hit, but in general I hate that phrase. If the move makes sense long time (and in this case it does), the current state of the defense REALLY needs some upgrades, the player you want to take in has a good fixture (much better than the one you would play instead), why is it so unthinkable of to take a hit for a defender? If you don't do it in a a situation like this one, next week you might have other injuries which will prevent you to do it and it will be this situation over and over again.

I did Jones > Lovren for a hit and am very happy about it. I would've had to play Wisdom.

It's tough, coz next week I can play Ivan PVA and whoever I bring in for Terry on a free. This week if I do nothing it's as good as a cleanie for PVA/Wisdom ... long term should be able to field 3 good defenders every week but if there's further injuries then I might have to take the hit any way.

If I don't take hit, only fear is Clyne picks up an assist and bonus too. :/
