After a two-week hiatus, our Friday evening analysis of the armband options in the Gameweek ahead comes around again. Our three-part approach takes in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Captain Poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

Captain Poll

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea’s Diego Costa leads the way after notching four times in his first three appearances. The Spain international once again heads into the weekend with hamstring doubts hanging over his pitch time but, after recovering from a similar problem to bag a brace at Goodison in Gameweek 3, he has earned the nod from over 29% of Fantasy managers so far as Jose Mourinho’s side welcome Swansea to the Bridge.

Despite scoring just twice in their first three matches under Louis van Gaal, United are still heavily backed for their home encounter against QPR. Radamel Falcao and Wayne Rooney sit second and fourth respectively in the Captain Poll and the Colombian’s previous ability to settle quickly in his new surrounds have persuaded 15% to select him compared to Rooney’s 13%. Harry Redknapp’s side have shipped four goals in their only road trip to date but a switch from 3-5-3 to 4-4-1-1 earned the R’s their first clean sheet of the campaign last time around.

Liverpool’s attackers are also high in our collective estimations. Raheem Sterling is the favoured option from Brendan Rodgers’ side – after scoring in two of his first three appearances, the youngster has picked up over 13% of your votes for a plum home clash with Aston Villa. With Daniel Sturridge sidelined for the Merseysiders, Mario Balotelli could be a real differential for this one, bearing in mind he’s owned by less than 6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

In spite of a testing clash with City at the Emirates, Arsenal new boy Danny Welbeck remains on the radar. A double for England against Switzerland has certainly had an impact – 3.55% of Fantasy managers fancy handing him the armband, more than either Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard for Chelsea’s encounter with Swansea.

    RMWCT:

    Bego
    Clyne - Ivan - Moreno
    ADM - Sterling - Siggy - Fab
    Costa - Naismith - Ade

    Bench: McCarthy, Boyd, Naylor, Moore

    3.2m in bank

Think my strikers are abit lightweight, but any candidates to bring in? Ade -> Aguero maybe?

ivan is a better pick than cahill though imo...maybe just go with the man in your grav if you don't want to downgrade Moreno or ADM 😉

Red card waiting to happen. It's a 50-50 with him over a hat trick or red card. Haha....Think I might downgrade Moreno then 🙂

Rooney has been playing too many games and I'd expect him to make way for RVP if the latter doesn't start.

I have a feeling Mata will do well this week. He's the type of player who needs runners in the team, flanked by Shaw and Di Maria I wouldn't put it past him to nick few tap ins here and there. I'd keep him.

I would expect mata to with Rooney dropping to nr 10, if United keep this formation than surely the best formation will be RVP Falcao up top with Roo at nr 10 and Mata on the bench

Jamie Jackson of the Guardian and Neil Custis of the Sun have both reported that Mata is key to LVG's plans and he won't be dropped. This will prob make you feel better.

99% par from direct quotes has been bs from the papers. Do you remember Costa being injured and rushed to the hospital in shock 🙂 Fact is Roo is captain it would be the first time in my time I see something like this, that a player has been made C and than dropped. I think even LVG does not know yet, I dont think Falcao move was planned, it was just an opportunity taken. We will see in 2-3 weeks how things shape up

You could look at it many ways. Im suggesting that a New signing that has just recovered from a serious injury and has had little game time would start from the bench in his first EPL game.

True but Falcao has said he's been ready since two months, and he was involved in Monaco's preseasons in which he scored v Arsenal. He returned to Manchester on Monday so will have had 6 days of training to prepare. Hoping he starts.

I don't think he'll get as much attacking freedom against a team that likes to control possession and has quick wingers in dyer and routledge. Knowing Mourinho he'll shackle the team again after conceding 3 last time too..

Try to avoid matching attackers with keepers... tadic and clyne vs krul in your case.

I've got Caulker vs Rooney (or Wisdom vs Naismith), but best to try to avoid such matchups as much as possible.

You won't need Hutton to play for at least another 8gwks. Downgrade to a 4.0 to save a 100k, it might come in handy at some stage.

With Ivan, Clyne and Moreno in defense I'm trying not to spend more than 4.0 for my other 2 defenders, who should spend most time on the bench. This gives me more flexibility to potentially upgrade to Falcao/Aguero down the road.

Krul --> Bego seems like a good call.

Could anyone give me a hand with my wildcard team? I've got an extra 3m and I don't know where to put it

    GK - Bego, McCarthy
DEF - Ivan, Clyne, Taylor, Wilson, Moore

    ATT - Costa, Balotelli, Pelle

Need a defender to replace phil jones.
    any suggestions?

thinking of either Lovren, Clyne or Pieters.
But not convinced about the clean sheet prospects of Pieters of Lovren, esp away from home.

    Thanks

Monero he plays on the wing and ran half field to score his goal. Its going to happen again. Lovren not bad but less attacking in my eyes.

Lovren has more goal threat due to being the main man attacking gerrards set pieces. he'll score more goals than moreno this season imo

I reckon Wenger will be determined not to lose first and foremost. That's why I sold Ramsey. I reckon he'll be told not to get forward so much, if he starts. Could be a 0:0
