After a two-week hiatus, our Friday evening analysis of the armband options in the Gameweek ahead comes around again. Our three-part approach takes in the weekly poll standings, the Opta player statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the Captain conundrum.

The first section is free to view for all visitors to the site and will analyse the chief protagonists, as selected in our Captain Poll. The latter two parts are restricted to our members, as we delve deeper into the Opta and Rate My Team data.

Captain Poll

Unsurprisingly, Chelsea’s Diego Costa leads the way after notching four times in his first three appearances. The Spain international once again heads into the weekend with hamstring doubts hanging over his pitch time but, after recovering from a similar problem to bag a brace at Goodison in Gameweek 3, he has earned the nod from over 29% of Fantasy managers so far as Jose Mourinho’s side welcome Swansea to the Bridge.

Despite scoring just twice in their first three matches under Louis van Gaal, United are still heavily backed for their home encounter against QPR. Radamel Falcao and Wayne Rooney sit second and fourth respectively in the Captain Poll and the Colombian’s previous ability to settle quickly in his new surrounds have persuaded 15% to select him compared to Rooney’s 13%. Harry Redknapp’s side have shipped four goals in their only road trip to date but a switch from 3-5-3 to 4-4-1-1 earned the R’s their first clean sheet of the campaign last time around.

Liverpool’s attackers are also high in our collective estimations. Raheem Sterling is the favoured option from Brendan Rodgers’ side – after scoring in two of his first three appearances, the youngster has picked up over 13% of your votes for a plum home clash with Aston Villa. With Daniel Sturridge sidelined for the Merseysiders, Mario Balotelli could be a real differential for this one, bearing in mind he’s owned by less than 6% of Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers.

In spite of a testing clash with City at the Emirates, Arsenal new boy Danny Welbeck remains on the radar. A double for England against Switzerland has certainly had an impact – 3.55% of Fantasy managers fancy handing him the armband, more than either Cesc Fabregas and Eden Hazard for Chelsea’s encounter with Swansea.

Would you change this team in any way with 1ft and 0.5 in the bank?

    Krul, Foster
    Terry, Lovren Caulker, Clyne, Moore
    Ramsey, Fabregas, Sterling, Sigurdsson, Young
    Rooney, Naismith, Costa

I'd swap him out for someone like Schniederlin/JWP and actually play them this week ahead of Siggy/Ramsey. I think the Southampton boys are going to do well this GW.

Or you could even look at someone from WHam like Downing, as bad as he was for Liverpool, he seems like he's going back to something like his Villa form this season.

          Thats my 2 cents worth

Very small I would say. I highly doubt Brendan would go with a lineup that would include Lallana, Manquillo, Markovic, AND Balotelli all making their home debuts, as he normally eases players in. Sterling will start 95%.

I may opt to captain Tadic instead though as Sterling could be subbed off to rest for the CL game if Liverpool are leading by a couple after 60mins

Looking at some of the teams at the top of the FPL global rankings, many of them (if not most) play 442 quite a lot, which got me thinking... Wouldn't it be better to go for a strategy that uses a group of expensive defenders rather than blowing the bank on midfielders and attackers?

Here is a potential WC team that I think would look great, with a really strong defense that could be rotated for 352, 442, or even 532.

    Begovic McCarthy
    Ivanovic, Lovren, Clyne, Kolarov, Janmaat
    Siggy, Fabregas, Tadic, Sterling, Zaha
    Costa, Balotelli, Naismith
    0.1 itb

If I didn't already have a strong team (only 6 transfers away from this team in fact) I'd be really tempted to choose this team on a WC as I think it could do really well and allow for some great rotation options.

With 2 FT's next week I may be really tempted to move towards this Defense-heavy strategy.

    What are your thoughts?

It is different from the norm and I am sure would deliver the points.i rarely play more than 3 at the back because, frankly, it's not much fun, I much prefer hoping for a goal or assist from attacking players rather than the stress that comes with hoping your defenders don't concede.

No reason why you shouldn't go for it though. You'll want Baines in there come GW8.

If I was on a WC I'd pick Balotelli. Especially a couple of days ago when 0.5 separated the two.

Don't forget that Rooney is on penalties too which could make a big difference even though United are unlikely to get any without Young or Januzaj on the pitch now that dive-master Welbeck has left.

    Morning all,

Right, all in all I'm pretty happy with my WC team:

    Begovic, (McCarthy)

    Ivanovic, Moreno, Neil Taylor/Hutton/Duff

    Hazard, Ramsey, Siggy, Sterling, (Boyd)

    Costa, Welbeck, Balloteli

Couple of dilemmas though in priority order:

    1. Balloteli v Rooney: currently have no Man U cover. Liverpool covered by Sterling but I am concerned about Man U formation and therefore Rooney potential.

    2. Moreno v Lovren: Moreno potentially more attacking returns v Lovren's increased reliability

    3. Hazard v Fab: I think Hazard is the better long term choice with greater attacking potential

    4. Is it too template?

Any thoughts and input would be greatly appreciated - Thanks

      Looks good.
      1. Either or. Don't believe in "coverage"... rather pick on the basis of which player will score more regardless of team.
      2. Lovren.
      3. Choose Fab and invest the rest in your defense which is weak beyond the first two. Taylor unlikely to get as many CS points now that he's played wba and burnley at home and tougher games upcoming.
      4. who cares? Balotelli and Welbeck are owned by less than 7% each so nothing template there.

Anyone want to try and talk me out of doing Fletcher ---> Pelle for a hit? Southampton have scored 9 goals in the past 4 games against Newcastle and I would be surprised if any of my bench players get more then 2 points. Surely its a no brainer?

I wouldn't say a no brainer. It's more likely to lose you point as Pelle needs to score just for you to break even (unless he gets bonus). I'd probably wait a week if you have no other pressing issues.

WC option depends on your squad but seems unlikely you need it, purely based on the fact that 95% of the people on here that ask if they should WC, should definitely not WC.

I'm in the same boat as you in considering between 1+2. Toughie, I'm leaning towards getting Welbeck though..
