The international break beckons, the Fantasy Premier League wildcards will be fluttering and after today’s games, there’s little doubt where you can find the first profit-making bandwagon.

Rafael Van der Vaart’s two goals against Villa at the Lane today won the game and will surely fetch him his second maximum FPL Bonus Point haul of the season. The Dutchman has arrived in the Premier League, hit the ground running and has established himself as not only a creative force but also a direct and devastating threat on the oppositions goal.

So the Van der Vaart “transfer in” is a no brainer. Well not quite. Gareth Bale appears to have hogged the limelight around here in the last 24 hours and he suddenly becomes a consideration again when it comes to coveting his influential team-mate.

Can any Fantasy lineup afford to have two Tottenham players, let alone two of their midfield? Those Fantasy Managers who have resisted the charms of Bale or even shipped out the Welshman over the frustration of his ever-changing role, can turn to Van der Vaart without hesitation. Bale owners however have a conundrum to consider.

During a kind run of fixtures having two Spurs players would be palatable but Redknapp’s side face three away games in the next four, one of which is at Old Trafford. Their home fixture meanwhile has them facing Everton – a side who have conceded just two goals in four away games and who sealed the season-starting win today at Birmingham. That won’t be easy.

Between these four fixtures, Spurs will face a Champions League tie at Inter for undoubtedly their biggest European tie so far. The fixture falls after Gameweek 8’s trip to Fulham and before the home game with Everton. Even if we felt that Van der Vaart was a rotation risk (it doesn’t look that way), he is suspended for the San Siro visit after his red against FC Twente in midweek. That will surely mean that the Dutchman is protected from being rested for both the Fulham and Everton games. The same perhaps can’t be said for Bale, who could either be rested at Fulham, or find himself at left-back once again away from home.

Is this enough to seal the fate for the 50% Bale and see thousands make the switch to jump aboard the Van dar Vaart bandwagon? Bale’s 1 point return today and his failure to notch a goal or an assist in his last five league starts, isn’t a statistic that helps his cause.

This is the knee jerk – so in-depth thinking isn’t allowed. For now there’s no doubt that Van der Vaart has become a hugely influential figure for Redknapp’s side, who having started four out of four league games since his arrival, looks to have his role well and truly cemented. Right now that role appears to allow him license to support a lone striker and provide a constant menace to opponents.

Van der Vaart will surely play the next two matches at Fulham and against Everton. Based on showings so far, he will take free-kicks, he will notch around 10 efforts on goal, he will earn Bonus Points if Spurs can win those matches. With an international break now beckoning, he will surely rise in price at least twice between now and Gameweek 8. It’s hard to deny the Dutchman’s draw.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

To WC or not– I could improve my team quite a bit with about 9 changes, but none are mandatory or essential, except maybe getting VDV and Nani for Bale and Milner. I don't even have any injured players now, except Dembele, who should be back. Might gain about .5 of increased value, but lose some from transferring out Bale- so almost a wash.

Does it make sense or should I wait for a game week with double games (makeup from weather in Feb/March), when I can actually score some extra points- maybe 20-30 points? Will that actually happen? First time player, here. Thanks.

theres very little chance of last years 1 in a hundred year winter, so there will be very few double game weeks this season. Its as good a time as any to play the WC

Thanks Fray (Ben) . Guess I thought make up games were more common and that was the secret to effective use of a wildcard. I just meant maybe one or two games had to be rescheduled, not a massive country wide shut down.

our squads are similar, and i am thinking much of what you are saying here.

this is my 3rd proper season, and the two previous times i tried this WC for money business, and a couple of GWs after the change, i felt similarly unhappy again.

this year im saving my WC, ESPECIALLY considering we can wildcard in january

Totally unnecessary. You sound as if you know in your heart it would be wrong to play it. I'd get rid of Bale and Gerrard over the next GW followed by Milner the week after.

He's played in every game this season and has scored more points than any other midfielder in the same price bracket. Nobody can say what will happen in the future, but up until this point Albrighton has clearly been a success.

I like to point at how overated O Neil is.

He never gave players a fair crack of the whip which
      1. caused the subs to have no match confidence when they were needed
      2. Wrecked the 11 he played every week by April.

Reo coker, Heskey, L Young are no world beaters but have showed they can do a job. Certainly should have played more of a role than they did in recent years under O Neil when he never changed his team ever.

Is everyone getting Fabs next week? I'm thinking of going without hoping he's quiet for his returning match against a solid at times Birmingham side and getting him after the city game so I can work him in with minimal point damage and weigh up who's going out. Is that stupid?

If Fabregas is fit, he suddenly becomes top priority. I have 3 injured players I should ship out, and Bale, yet I'll keep them all and get Fabregas in if he's fit.

I can't see him tearing Birmingham a new one especially in his first game back and the city game is potential 2 pointer for him, the week after he is defiantly essential. He's gonna take some working into my team that's all.

    My team is

    Foster (Carson)

    Oshea, Konchesky, Richards (Faye, Jones)

    Malouda, Nani, Bale, Essien (Adam)

    Droggy, Tevez, Caroll

Main concerns are Konchesky, Richards, Essien and Caroll.

    Thoughts:
    1. Essien > VDV

    Then upgrade defence
    2. Konchesky - injured, Richards - injured/rotation when fit, Oshea - rotation?

Which ones of the above three should I get rid off? Toure, that Wigan Captain and Alex spring to mind.

Or downgrade defence - and create holy trinity of strikers:
    3. Bring the defence down to 4 million players - Williamson, Goubhri and upgrade Caroll to Berba

    Let me know pleeeeeeeease boys

Konch - should be back by next GW, which is 2 weeks away. Keep

O'Shea - hasn't been rotated yet, but will be a some point, because Man Uts have 4 right backs. Keep until he gets dropped for a game, then sell.

Richards - if Boateng or (preferably) Kolarov look like being fit for next GW, get one of them. If not, maybe Alex?

Essien to VDV - yes, do it.

There's the problem of fitting in Fabs when fit(he's very popular on here, for good reason), but you can't have everyone.
