634x258 Suspensions

Our Suspension Tightrope only kicked back into action last week but we’ve already seen a couple of players topple off after Gameweek 7 came to an end. Both Calum Chambers and Jonjo Shelvey went into the weekend with four yellows accrued and the pair were culpable yet again, earning their fifth domestic cautions to automatically trigger a one-match ban.

In an ill-tempered affair at Stamford Bridge, Chambers was a little fortunate not to receive his marching orders after Martin Atkinson chose not to dish out a second yellow for a foul on Andre Schurrle. Indeed, although the whistler booked seven players in the 2-0 win, the likes of Laurent Koscielny, Gary Cahill and Danny Welbeck were also shown a little leniency, and received a caution when a dismissal could just as easily have been the outcome. Welbeck owners will particularly be relieved after his wild lunge on Cesc Fabregas was only deemed worthy of a yellow.

Chambers – who has now been booked six times in just eight appearances for the Gunners – misses the Gameweek 8 home encounter against Hull but will return in time for the following week’s trip to Sunderland.

Shelvey will skip the Swans’ trip to Stoke next time around before coming back into contention for the Gameweek 9 home clash against Leicester. Team-mate Angel Rangel is available now, though, after serving his own one-match suspension against Newcastle on Saturday afternoon.

The duo join Wayne Rooney on the sidelines, then, as the United skipper serves the second of a three-match suspension away to West Brom. Rooney also misses a home match with Chelsea before being available in time for the Gameweek 10 Manchester derby at the Etihad.

Back to the Tightrope and Chambers’ team-mate Jack Wilshere is now the only player currently sitting with four cautions to his name. Just below him, though, are band of 10 players which include a trio of big-hitting Fantasy prospects, in the form of Diego Costa, Yaya Toure and Graziano Pelle.

I'm sorry, but all these stats tables that get posted on these boards drive me crazy.

Top of the pile for shots from defenders doesn't mean a fook if you can't shoot properly, as most defenders can't anyway.

Second best crosses into the box when your team has shite strikers that couldn't hit a barn door.

Third best passes received in the final third when you're the only player in the final third. Etc etc etc. 🙄 blah... blah... blah...

The list goes on ... There are certain posters that clog the airwaves with this sort of crap all the time and you only have to look at their ORs and history to see where their statistical analysis gets them.

Watch the matches. Make your own choices on what you see with your own eyes. Good players are good players, you've all watched enough football over the years not to be conned by all this.

Admittedly, some great players don't equate to great FPL picks but if you know what you want, just go and get it.

Stats = boring. Gut feeling = excitement. And don't tell me stats LEAD to gut feelings.. They don't.

Observing games is far more crucial than looking at stats.

The fact that some people were put off my Di Maria's lack of stats is astounding to me.

i’m not, how can i ignore information

he’s kinda saying that we should ignore people who answer to questions with stats and listen to those who say "he looked good", "he’s due" and "i can feel he’ll score"

I've correlated hof ranking with propensity to use stats and come up with some surprising results.

Actually I haven't because I'm too lazy and wouldn't know how to anyway.

However, I do appreciate the effort people going to in creating and sharing these and certainly don't find them to be clogging the airwaves.

IMO watching matches, stats and advice from other good players are all useful tools in helping to make good decisions and for most people if you miss out any of these 3 you will be worse for it.

I tend to agree and not agree in the same time. Watching the matches is as good as stats, stats are there though as you cannot watch 10 full matches a week.

I have been playing FPL for 7 years now, never took it seriously until this year. So, I became a member and it has helped a lot. An example, I got Bertnard when everybody jumped on Clyne wagon purely because at that moment Berty had the most crosses. The same week, he delivered an assist a clean sheet and two BPS, the rest is history.

I try to mix gut with stats this year as I never used stats before. Results are greater than I thought.

Shots on target for strikers, touches in the box for midfielders, heat maps that show which mids are playing ahead of their strikers - I find these useful and generally spend a few minutes each week looking at them. I don't bother much with the rest but I do appreciate the time that people spend making these tables.

If there was only one way to play the game it would be boring. I like stats in combination with observation and other means of assessing potential targets.

Stats are useful & helpful but not to be taken in isolation. We can all look at stats and take a different interpretation of the figures that we see but they do give you a true analytical picture of whole story , but it's only by watching that team play do see how those stats transfer onto the park.

It's the same as watching a game, 4 guys will say Gerrard was fantastic & controlled the game, 4 will say he' was crap & past it, 1 didn't realise that Gerrard was playing!
        Personnel interpretation.

Stats are misleading no doubt about it. They only tell half the story and to make it worse they are based on a very small sample size

which is probbly why those that follow them are so poorly ranked,

Better than watching the stats is watching the money and flow of transfers, because just like the stockmarket supply and demand twl the real story

Speaking of small sample sizes you just made the judgement those who use stats have poor ranks. I suspect you have only checked a few people to come to that assertion.

Last seasons winner used the members area religiously to gain the FPL crown.

No, i explained that my main strategy is watching the flow of inbound and outbound transfers , i basically pick the same players as everyone else, at the right time, build up team value and then use it to advantage after xmas.
I read the articles etc, listen to other posters and try to be sensible and patient and avoid hits.

It flies in the face of the perma-hunt for the killer differential which is a holy grail for many.

I used to play sportal game in oz, regularly finished top 50 out of ~20k by playing prices early. Since switching to fpl I've been a bit more balanced but find myself behind on both pts and $s this year so may become more price focused going forward as it's more predictable and therefore controllable.

Each to their own for me. Some people get enjoyment out of looking at data and trying to use it to solve a puzzle. Some enjoy shooting from the hip and going with their gut. A large degree of luck is going to come into it either way, so just do what makes you happy.

Sorry, RCA, but I find this a pretty disrespectful post.

Not everyone has the same access to the matches live seeing as FPL attracts people from around the world, so for those people, why is watching film religiously vs checking stats tables religiously vs tracking price changes religiously any better than the others? Couldn't they all be considered nerdy in their own way?

We are all hooked on this mad game for our own reasons and enjoy it in a variety of ways. One of the best things about this site is that it weaves those various interests together like almost no other forum I've seen. I hope the surge of up votes is for the conversation more than the sentiments.

Absolutely. Watching 10 games a week is much easier said than done. The variety of ways to play this game makes it interesting, it creates a diverse array of perspectives which makes the game more interesting for everyone.

Statistics can be used to prove anything. They are very easily warped. I only use stats realy to decide between two players I can't seperate really through watching. Or maybe Im not interesting in watching - like my 4.4m bench fodder Boyd. I'm sure he's just peachy in real life 😀

They often lie, case in point with Di Maria as someone mentioned already. Anyone watching the games could see that he is a class act even if his assists were 'flukey', which again is only a point you would get form watching the games.

The stats suggest ADM will do very well for assists this season. He's one of the most creative players in the PL. What wasn't expected was his goal scoring ability.

Apologies for my misguided use of stats 😀 Also My post might seem negative towards stats but i do think they have their place and comend those who draw up these tables and such. Just gotta take everything with a pinch of salt is all

Persons using stats to help other's make decisions I can appreciate.

The select few that purport stats as the gospel can be easily ignored if that isn't your thing.

Those that totally discount them and choose a different method to play are free to do so.

Pretty sure there's a mixed bag of results playing the game in a variety of ways.

If the intent of this post was to spark proper discussion about the use of stats in FPL then this could have been framed a lot better.

If this is just one man's random rant about others playing the game differently to he does, then this is as "useless" a post as an out-of-context stat table.

        Shocking hulk.

I think you'll find its a combination of both. The shear interest, discussion and response makes it worthy of a hot topic. Hot topics are not always given out because of the original post.

I agree with OP. Stats are way over rated...just look at Tadic if you don't believe me. I can't tell you how many times I've seen people recommend players based on stats alone. When it comes to FPL, I could care less about how far forward you are or how many touches in the box you have, as long as you have goals, assists, clean sheets and a good CBI (for D), that's ALL that matters.

Obviously you missed the point of my post or took it too literally. We all care about G, A and CS's. But the rest of the stats don't mean anything if they aren't putting up the important ones. I don't care how good your touches in the box are or your crosses that created chances. I care about the only stats that matter and I don't need a stat sheet to tell me that. I just look at the FPL site and watch the games. Comprende?

When you watch the matches what are you looking for?

The number of times the player gets opportunities to shoot (goal attempts) or get forward into the box perhaps (touches in the box)? 😉

The point is, when we watch a match, we're processing the same data that can be captured through statistics. Stats are valuable if you can process them effectively and put the appropriate weighting to the information they give you.

They are not the overriding factor to govern Fantasy selections, but they can be a factor.

I'm not sure if you've explored the members area much but the stats there are pure gold. Sure, some of them may not be useful as others but there are some really great stats for you to have a play around with, like the ones Mark mentioned above...

Some important underlying stats can lead to picking players just before they hit form...the stats you can find on this site are very valuable and useful, imo. Not sure I like the tone of this post.

The important thing to stress is that data for things like shots inside the box, chances created, touches in the box etc captures the same events that we would see with our eyes and identify as "signs" of Fantasy potential.

Watching every match and noting every player who spikes for these events is one method of assessing potential for players. Sorting through the members tables is another - it's a shortcut to finding those players who are getting involved.

As Tom Fenley said, pairing the two is the ultimate.

Stats have an incredibly important part to play in this game, taking into account both stats and gut feelings will lead to a better end result in my experience, but you have to know what pieces of data are meaningful and which are red herrrings

I think you raise an aged old argument that, not surprisingly, has prompted a big discussion of some merit.

I do think your post shows a little "unnecessary roughness" towards other users, though.

The stats tables and the analysis of them, to my mind, is great fun and should be enjoyed by those who go in for this kind of thing (quite a few judging by the discussion that's followed). Fair enough if you don't put stock into them but, like I say, this is a topic that splits Fantasy managers.

We hulked the post because we like the discussion. I've joined the discussion because I like the discussion. As always though, folk should be mindful of dismissing other posters and questioning their abilities as Fantasy managers just because they take up an opposing view. I love and use stats. Feel free to appraise my history.

Some great discussion though - it will run and run and I've added my views.

I've just logged on and I'm very glad such a big discussion ensued.

I have read it all and I have to agree that my "dig" at other FFSers rank was completely unnecessary and quite frankly, a bit mean.

For that, I apologise wholeheartedly. In fact, in the past I have pulled people up on using a superior ranking to dismiss another poster's opinion. Everyone on here is, of course entitled to their opinion and entitled to play the game in whatever way they choose.

My ranking history is nothing to write home about anyway! 🙂

I'm just glad it prompted such an in depth discussion. And again, apologies to anyone who found it "disrespectful".

I absolutely loathe these kinds of anti-statistics posts.

Firstly, there is no "right" way to enjoy fantasy football or just football for that matter. Nobody is forcing you to be a member of this website or look at the statistics based posts. Believe it or not, for a lot of people looking at the statistics is part of the fun. Just because you don't enjoy them doesn't mean it's not fun for anyone else.

Secondly, watching 22 players on a pitch at any one time and fairly judging their performances is basically impossible. Plus nobody will watch the whole of every game in the league and accurately keep a mental record of who is doing well and who isn't. At the very least looking at the stats for the games you've not seen can help inform opinions of players you have seen very little of.

Thirdly, when you watch a game and process how good a player is, you are watching them dribble, shoot, win tackles, pass etc. to judge how good they are. Yes there are other things such as technique and off the ball runs, but most of the ways in which we judge players are actually quantified in an unbiased fashion by the stats.

Finally, context is king. This is one of the most important things about ALL statistics in any field. A sending off, a crap striker, easy fixtures, injuries, whatever. They will all have an impact on the stats and you will have to take those things into account when you consider them (and most do). Nobody is saying that statistics are perfect and the answer to everything, but in the right hands they are useful and revealing whether you like it or not.

        Hmmmm

I agree that some stats are useless but most aren't. When picking players for my punts their stats are key! When u look at picking a player you have to know the opposition's weakness and if the player will exploit it. The only real way to do that is through stats!

Sorry, but pretty poor hot topic :/

Trippier was the leader of final third touches for defenders.

Means nothing because he has nobody to cross to, so he just passes it back.

Also I really wasn't looking to triple up. Went cheap for Aldy instead of Clyne on my WC and had to correct the error. Not really sold on anyone else ATM anyway so will hold fire until a quality option appears.

If i leave it tho and anyone goes up or down even .1 im priced out........ the other swap for my FT i was toying with was Ulloa to Wellbeck, but seems a bit quick to ditch Ulloa with New Swa in the next two......

If you are willing to take the risk, go for it. I wouldn't get rid of Ulloa for Welbeck for -8 though, despite the fact I think Welbeck will score relatively big this GW

Couldnt afford all 3 transfers, would only be the first set for -4 or just ulloa to wellbeck......keep changing my mind between the 2 sets

Usually they say play the home player. But I trust Swansea with a clean sheet more than Stoke. Plus, the possible (unlikely) assist from Taylor

I had talked him up before going the 'safe' option in Tadic.

He looks good, although he did miss that sitter, and has a great record. I like it.

Fab may not explode, or be an exciting captain choice, but he could finish as highest Mid point scorer...it's not ridiculous to suggest he gets 7 goals, 20 assists, lots of baps

I can't bring myself to pay 7 million for a defender on a team with the worst defense in the leage. A Chelsea defender is a different story. People getting Baines are going to be disappointed.

Playing Villa(H), Burnley, Swansea(H), Sun, WHA(H) will help turn things around on defense, though worried about their ability to score with Barkley and Mirallas out.

well as a Baines owner , I have to say you are lucky that he missed that penalty..could have been like 13 points for him..i played him every game expecting free kick corner and penalty points to come anytime and that happened, twice already in 4 games since i own him..even in the Europa game that he played 3 days before the United game , he managed to grab an assist..well Chelsea defenders are good as well of course, but I hope Baines bang in 1 goal and get clean sheet at the same time at one point real soon 😉

Dier has just got his place back.

Pretty dull set of movements. Going to be a long 10 days

Can i get some advice please lads, and sorry for those who might have seen this a few days ago in the DZ:

                    Forster (Mannone)
                    Moreno Clyne Pieters (Taylor Dier)
                    Fab Siggy ADM Sterling (Boyd)
                    Costa Welbeck Pelle

                    2FTs and 2.4 ITB

I'm looking to ship either Moreno or Pieters > Baines

Moreno still has some good fixtures and still looks pretty dangerous running down the wings. Dier is nailed on now and has a few good fixtures also. Pieters was dropped but could come back after they shipped 3 goals.

                    1) Pieters > Baines (roll over FT, get Chambers next week)
                    2) Pieters & Moreno > Baines & Moore (free up some cash)
                    3) Other pressing issues

                    Thoughts please?

Thanks mate, although when Aguero explodes it's going to hurt and there'll be some hits taken by a lot of people to get him in! However, i think you're right that it is possible to do reasonably well without all the eggs in the Aguero, Falcao, Costa basket.

Where was Sakho on fpl statistics? didnt notice him on the first page, another strange one.

They maybe dont have a large enough sample size of peoples teams. Im thinking the only people who hve gone to the site and put in their team id are us lot.
Casuals would not have done, so the casual bandwagons are going to have a lower percentage than they should make sense?

Just under 78% TL. As I said above, he shouldn't have risen based on what we know of how the system works. Even his raw transfer numbers (including wildcards) looks insufficient.

On some quick and rough calculations he was ~19,000 NTO short of a drop. He could be the victim of a high number of wildcard transfers in a few weeks back messing with his thresholds.

Hey there, I'm pretty set on these transfers: Balotelli, ShawX -> Welbeck, Baines, just wondering when to make them as I'm going on holiday tomorrow and may not have an opportunity. Don't really want to lose any price but also wary of international injuries.

Do you think there may be price changes or should I just wait?

Repost here, if anyone is looking at the same thing I am.

Owners of Forster and a 4.0, looking ahead here, what's your plan for GW13 onwards? Terrible fixtures from GW13 to GW20, 6 games in 8 against top sides.

I'm looking at switching Forster out for Fabianski as SWA fixtures are easy till GW20 where the Jan wc can be played.

Or is there a rotation plan?

Get in guzan. I am convinced with such a tough fixture u should be able to regain that 4pt transfer. And likely that u will not use ur wc exactly on gw20

                            Morning guys.

I currently have Clyne, Bertrand and Iva.
My plan is to swap Iva to Baines now and then 5 GWs later drop one of Clyne or Bertrand for a Chelsea defender. I know i am planning too much into the future, but just wondering if having no Chelsea cover for those 5 GWs would affect me or not. Baines is so tempting!

Chelsea had their first really solid defensive game against Arsenal, prior to that they have been a little leaky. I wouldn't worry about it honestly, Baines is the short-term man to have!

Anyone else looking at bringing in a Tottenham defender soon?
By al accounts Spurs were using the poch closing down technique well against soton and could well be one of the more solid teams in the division . Shame they have City this week othewise may of bought one Rose in for Taylor

I was thinking of shipping Dier this week but now that he's nailed on (and has some goal threat on corners) I might just keep him.

Im staying away from Tottenham at the minute til they prove a bit more consistent. Most of their players are at those frustrating prices halfway between cheap or premium lol Certainly ones to monitor though

Might consider once they're proven their worth, could fit in nice w/ Chambers. I'd wait a week more & see how their chemistry in the back plays out.

Which back line looks more tempting?

                            1) Guzan (4.0)
Baines | Ivan | Clyne (Chambers, Duff)

                            or

                            2) Adrian (4.0)
                            Baines | Azpi | Chambers | (Wisdom , Hutton)

                              Are you on a WC?

I'd say 1) as I think it's silly to go without a Southampton defender with their attacking potential, form, fixtures and high ownership.

Could Di Maria be this seasons Bale/Suarez

                            The media are saying yes.

Could he end the season on 220 plus points? Its starting to look that way, certainly wont be leaving my team in a hurry, not when he cost 9.5

Di Maria is lthe main man at united and would score more goals than at madrid plus fewer games means he'd be fresh for most of the season
