Versus – Baines and Coleman

After scaling the heights of fifth place in their first season under Roberto Martinez, Everton have so far failed to find their form. The Toffees sit in seventeenth spot – just two points off the basement – but are poised for an excellent upcoming schedule which many expect will enable them to quickly climb back up the table.

Understandably, Fantasy managers are eyeing up Leighton Baines ahead of a run which pits the Merseysiders against just three of last season’s top eight in the forthcoming 13 Gameweeks. Given that the Toffees have managed just a single clean sheet so far, though, defensive returns may be hard to come by unless they can tighten up considerably.

With team-mate Seamus Coleman looking poised for an imminent return to action, we analyse the pair’s displays so far and compare them to the performances which harvested 169 and 180 points respectively in the 2013/14 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

    top of mini league by 65 ranked 1112 but thinking sanchez is a must my team is almost a template currently

    thinking of swapping chadli for sanchez sterling for henderson last sesason hardly any difference with points and this year too..

    i think having sanchez for the next 3 game weeks is worth a shout untill theo is fully back

    would you guys take a 8 point hit?

      I wouldnt make a free transfer, let alone a hit where i was not confident the new players are better than the old players. Im not sure the new players are better than the old players in this situation.

      Thats a good rank but 65 seems a lot, are you playing with casuals or children? 😉

      At that rank I wouldn't be taking an 8 pointer, especially with Sanchez having a friendly later in the week (I think). May not play 90. May not need 90 at home to return the points though.

  2. Baseline bonus magnets in defence
    President John F. Keninnsie

    Following on from Jonty's community article about Bonus Point Magnets in Defence, I've taken it a step further and removed the top 12 BPS magnets' clean sheet, goal and assist points to find out their baseline BPS score...

    Using Ivanovic as an example, below shows their current BPS (181), the points taken off for CS/G/A and their new BPS after these have been deducted. [Goals and clean sheets are worth 12BPS, assists are worth 9BPS].

    Ivanovic : 181 BPS : - 2 goals, 1 assist, 3 CS (-69) = 112 BPS
    Azpilicueta : 175 BPS : - 1 assist, 3 CS (-45) = 130 BPS
    Baines : 163 BPS : - 1 goal, 3 assists, 1 CS (-51) = 112 BPS
    Williams : 158 BPS : - 3 CS (-36) = 122 BPS
    Bertrand : 152 BPS : - 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 CS (-57) = 95 BPS
    Robertson : 148 BPS : - 1 assist, 2 CS (-33) = 115 BPS
    Jagielka : 144 BPS : - 1 goal, 1 CS (-24) = 120 BPS
    Fonte : 144 BPS: - 3 CS (-36) = 108 BPS
    Naylor : 144 BPS : - 1 assist, 3 CS (-45) = 99 BPS
    Clyne : 143 BPS : - 1 goal, 1 assist, 3 CS (-57) = 86 BPS
    Kompany : 139 BPS : - 2 CS (-24) = 115 BPS
    Shackell : 137 BPS: - 3CS (-36) = 101 BPS

    All of these 12 men have played every minute of the season so far (630) apart from Robertson (609) and Naylor (592). Below is the baseline BPS/min, in order, for the 'new' top 12.

    Azpilicueta = 0.206
    Williams = 0.194
    Jagielka = 0.190
    Robertson = 0.189
    FERDINAND = 0.184
    Kompany = 0.183
    Ivanovic = 0.178
    Baines = 0.178
    LOVREN = 0.178
    Fonte = 0.171
    Naylor = 0.167
    Coloccini = 0.165

    Out go Bertrand, Clyne and Shackell, in come Ferdinand (into 5th! 😯 ), Lovren and Coloccini.

    Conclusion:
    - Azpilicueta is the biggest baseline BPS magnet defender in the game.
    - 5 fullbacks and 7 centre backs... Neither position seems to have have much of an advantage over the other in terms of baseline BPS.
    - Fonte has the best baseline BPS/min out of all of the SOT defenders... He also scored 3 goals last season... an alternative to Clyne and Bertrand maybe?
    - Jagielka would likely be the defender to get some bonus if Everton keep a cleanie, providing the other 3 defenders don't get attacking returns.
    - Ferdinand! Where did that come from? He may be a cheeky pickup later in the season when QPR have some kind fixtures and defensive form...

    Anyway, these are the results. I know it's not the biggest sample size as we are only 7 weeks into the season, but I'll let you all conclude what you want from my research.

      Great post, but I do think this kind of analysis is only useful for deciding which defenders might get the odd bonus point in a 0-0 or 1-0. It may give you a slight 'baseline' edge but if another defender is knocking in assists and goals, he will easily surpass the points and indeed the baps.

          Yeah I am all for research and also analysis! In some games where points are heavily based on stats rather than end product this would be a gold mine. I think the yahoo and skysports games might be but haven't played them.

          In FPL it isnot helped by the need to be top 3 in order to get bonus points.

          Top 3 out of 22-28 players requires a fairly erratic scoring style rather than a consistently above average one. Without doing the research I'd guess Kompany has often been 5th-10th in the bonus charts which equates to good try but no cigar.

        The good thing with Rio is when (if 😉 ) QPR keep a clean sheet it'd probably be a low scoring game as QPR won't be thrashing teams anytime soon... So he'll probably be in the BPS...

        Ha in the case of Ferdinand the reason he has good stats is because QPR are so bad the ball is constantly around the box. He will make blocks and clearances in the same way that a carefully positioned scarecrow would (and also a similar effect on the nearby birds ;))

        The problem is the by product of this heavy concentration of action in the QPR area also leads to a lorra lorra goals against, chuck.

      Naylor is excellent value at 4.6m and looks great for gws 13-15, which all happen in the same week. Swansea have three homes in four and four in six. It's going to be rotation hell in that period for some clubs so a decent back up defender could be a wise investment.

    Can't wait for people to prematurely get Walcott in like they did last Christmas for a bunch of bench cameos.

    Yes he's a great pick but calm down everyone, there are other equally good midfielders.

        He got a haul against Newcastle again when people captained Suarez away to Chelsea I think but before that people had got him in about 3-4 GWs early when he wasn't even starting yet. He's a top FPL pick but he needs time, especially this year round when the injury has been so serious.

        I had him too, in fact I (c) for the Newcastle game but there were a number of bench appearances before that. Great pick but the talk/plans is a bit premature still imo.

    Alright guys, this week should I play Moreno against QPR or use my free transfer to get Baines in against Villa? Tbh I’m more tempted to save my transfer at the mo but also getting the nagging doubt…..

      Well, I have the same dilemma. I would say the chances of a clean sheet are pretty even, but Baines is just so much more explosive that if you can't think of other ways to spend the money, it would seem worthwhile.

      Liverpool and Everton struggle to get a cs. So it is all about attacking points. Baines on pens, but QPR much worse defence than Villa. I would keep and have 2 FTs next week. Liverpool play Hull at home and you may have other issues by then

    I think I'm set with my two free transfers this week.

    PVa -> Baines

    Only thing is I'm very wary of is Walcott hitting form with Arsenals kind fixtures. I will have 0.6mil after these transfers in the bank, along with Sterling who I can sell for 8.8mil when/if Walcott is scoring bucket loads of points.

          Get a cheapie striker for Balo. Plenty of excellent points scorers in the 5.5-6.0 range. You then have enough funds to sort out that mess of a defence.

    *Boring post alert*

    I wonder if anyone can answer this question...

    Are there fewer bonus points to go round this season??

    Hear me out! Last season the scoring system was simpler and it meant there were a lot of tied scores. I remember things like 5 players tied in second place for bonus points, all picking up 2 each. (Meaning rather than 3+2+1 = 6 BPs in a game, there were in this case 3+2+2+2+2+2 = 13)

    With the more complex BP score, based purely on my observation, I am guessing there have been notably fewer ties and as such fewer BAPs per game this season.

    This would mean that multiple defenders are less likely to pick up the baps in a low scoring game... Right?

        A more sensitive bonus system will drastically reduce the number of multiple bonus allocations in low-scoring games. However, this is likely to negatively impact on defenders who might previously have benefited from multiple allocations across the defence
