Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this Thursday evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Diego Costa is the leading candidate ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Sunderland this weekend. With a variety of options available, though, the summer signing has earned only 27% of the votes cast despite scoring in eight of his 10 appearances so far – he’ll fancy his chances of extending that run against a defence with a single shut-out in six.

Alexis Sanchez (14%) heads the chasing pack as Arsenal make their way to the Hawthorns. As evidenced by last night’s win over Dortmund, a move out to the left flank doesn’t seem to have diminished his prospects as he look to continue the form which has delivered five goals in the last four Gameweeks. Given that the Baggies have conceded twice in five of the last six, the visitors will be optimistic of returning to winning ways.

Man United’s home encounter against Hull brings Wayne Rooney and Angel Di Maria into contention. Both are backed by 12% heading into the Tigers clash – Louis van Gaal’s decision to roll out a 3-4-1-2 earned the Argentine a start up front against Arsenal last weekend, whilst Rooney’s goal and maximum bonus at the Emirates perhaps hints that he’s about to embark on a streak of goals. Certainly, with two clean sheets in their last 11, Steve Bruce’s defence have been anything but resilient as they head to Old Trafford.

In spite of his midweek hat-trick against Bayern, Sergio Aguero has been backed by just 7% of voters so far as Man City travel to Southampton. Given the Saints have conceded just one goal in front of their own fans, though, he clearly has his work cut out to deliver, having failed to produce the goods at home to Swansea last time out.

Eden Hazard and Wilfried Bony also look viable armband options this week, according to the votes cast so far. Both have persuaded over 5% to hand them the armband but, bearing in mind he’s managed just two assists on his travels, the Chelsea winger will need to improve his away displays to justify that show of faith. Bony has notched five times in the last six, and with a home encounter against Palace’s porous defence on his agenda, could well be set to extend that run.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Evening Gents,

If Baines is passed fit for this weekend, what do you think of the below:

    Forster
    Baines Yun Duff (Clyne Moore)
    Sanchez Fabregas Hazard(vc) Siggy (Boyd)
    Aguero Rooney (c) Austin

Double Soton defence isn't great but CLyne would be benched and Forster would be offloaded next week. Captaincy may change to Hazard or Sanchez depending on my mood!

    Thoughts would be appreciated cheers.

Well yeah, but in GW20 my other two alternatives would be Clyne (CHE) and Naylor(liv)... so its rather important that I get this right, as I don't want to be forced to use another unnecessary FT's on my defense until the Jan WC, but rather save those for my front 8.

In 55 Premier League starts since being loaned to West Brom:

Romelu Lukaku has managed 29 goals and 15 assists.

It compares pretty favourably to the records of some of the most expensive FPL strikers in their own last 55 PL starts:

    Sturridge: 31 goals, 14 assists
    Rooney: 31 goals, 15 assists
van Persie: 33 goals, 13 assists
    Aguero: 37 goals, 12 assists

Admittedly, he isn't quite at their level, but given the price differences, its a pretty impressive pedigree. Notably, he combines his goals with assists, which is typically what sets these premium forwards apart.

yes martinez is the right manager
yes eto is the right teacher
but the europa and injuries in an unsettled midfield(lukaku is a team player who drops back if not getting served)....
if barkley steps up ,barry recovers quick and mirallas is consistent.......all to many ifs just now for me but given his age I do think on this one maureen is wrong...

Something to consider for the many going for Bony. He's got an impressive 21 goals in 37 PL starts so far, which is a slightly better strike rate than Lukaku's. However, with only 5 assists in those starts, Lukaku's assists per start is more than twice Bony's.

Evening all - I have 3 Southampton players at the mo (forst, pelle and Bert), and 1FT. I was thinking of swapping forster for krul to free money, but on reflection I'm now thinking save the Tran and evaluate after this GW, boring but transfers are pretty important over Crimbo and I don't want to be wasting 2 trans on someone - thoughts? Wise or overly cautious?

      Wasn't aware Downing was ok.
Can't afford Bertrand --> Chelsea unfortunately. Might just save a trade now and reassess next week.

Are owners of Azpi worried that he will always have Filipe Luís in his shadow especially over the festive period when games come thick and fast? Makes me wonder is it worth paying the extra 0.3 for Terry

    1. S.Kuqi
      • 13 Years

Out of those two Terry is the one who needs more rest.

      1. rickardinho

Its not about giving anyone rest though..Terry will get rest in the league cup game, as well as in the dead-rubber CL game. Mourinho won't want to break up his CB pairing, but instead its more natural to give Azpi a break

Completely agree. I'd get Terry if i got anyone. Goal threat, and no risk of rotation

I've owned Terry from the outset & while he's been a relative bust thus far I do appreciate that I never have to worry if he'll start or not.

Sure he'll get a rest at some point but, that extra £.3 is worth it.

Oh, and he's scored btwn 3 & 6 goals over the past 4 years so I figure he's going to get lucky on a set piece eventually.

Considering doing Duff --> Yun, just in case i need a sub off the bench but also because QPR have an OK game pretty much every other week til January.

Is Yun a good option or is his shelf-life limited?

Using one FT to do Pelle to Bony

Other FT is either for Bertrand --> Chambers; or for the less fun bench improvements Duff --> Yun; or Myhill --> Elliot

        interesting.
never good to plan to make rubbish transfers but Burnley have an alright set of fixtures in Jan. Could swap him back then.... as long as I remember to have a little bit in the bank

Good option but that's bit sideways so could backfire. Would've said definite yes if it was Moore instead of Duff.

I have a lot of flags this week, and Duff seemed an easy candidate to swap out as he is 50/50 for starting.

If I leave the Bertrand transfer to next gameweek it is going to be hard to justify doing: Bert (ars) --> Chambers (SOU)

3 players might not play. 🙁 1 FT 0.3 ITB. What to do?

    Krul* (Foster)
Baines* - Naylor - Duff* - Yun (Clyne)
ADM - Fabregas - Siggy (Tadic, Boyd)
    Aguero - Costa (C) - Austin

Last year A. Carroll had almost 2 headed goal attempts per appearance.
(He had 5 in the Everton game too)

This year A. Cresswell has produced over 4 crosses per match.
With WHM's fixtures up to the Jan WC, I think a £5.4mil Cresswell is a decent shout.
