Our weekly analysis of the Captaincy contenders arrives once again this Thursday evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Diego Costa is the leading candidate ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Sunderland this weekend. With a variety of options available, though, the summer signing has earned only 27% of the votes cast despite scoring in eight of his 10 appearances so far – he’ll fancy his chances of extending that run against a defence with a single shut-out in six.

Alexis Sanchez (14%) heads the chasing pack as Arsenal make their way to the Hawthorns. As evidenced by last night’s win over Dortmund, a move out to the left flank doesn’t seem to have diminished his prospects as he look to continue the form which has delivered five goals in the last four Gameweeks. Given that the Baggies have conceded twice in five of the last six, the visitors will be optimistic of returning to winning ways.

Man United’s home encounter against Hull brings Wayne Rooney and Angel Di Maria into contention. Both are backed by 12% heading into the Tigers clash – Louis van Gaal’s decision to roll out a 3-4-1-2 earned the Argentine a start up front against Arsenal last weekend, whilst Rooney’s goal and maximum bonus at the Emirates perhaps hints that he’s about to embark on a streak of goals. Certainly, with two clean sheets in their last 11, Steve Bruce’s defence have been anything but resilient as they head to Old Trafford.

In spite of his midweek hat-trick against Bayern, Sergio Aguero has been backed by just 7% of voters so far as Man City travel to Southampton. Given the Saints have conceded just one goal in front of their own fans, though, he clearly has his work cut out to deliver, having failed to produce the goods at home to Swansea last time out.

Eden Hazard and Wilfried Bony also look viable armband options this week, according to the votes cast so far. Both have persuaded over 5% to hand them the armband but, bearing in mind he’s managed just two assists on his travels, the Chelsea winger will need to improve his away displays to justify that show of faith. Bony has notched five times in the last six, and with a home encounter against Palace’s porous defence on his agenda, could well be set to extend that run.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

A hybrid of pool and spurs would be fairly solid.

      Lloris
      Johnson Sakho Vertonghen Davies
      Henderson Paulinho
      Sterling Eriksen Lallana
      Sturridge

Not sure which manager i'd take though.
Admittedly the defence is still fairly shocking

    Ings v Austin

I have/had had Naismith, Ulloa and Sakho over about 8 about a total gameweeks. 0 goals. Budget seem to run out of goals after scoring 4 or 5. Here are the pros and cons to picking the right budget striker right now.

Austin - QPR have good fixtures and are in good from recently. not managing to score last week could be him starting to stop scoring like the strikers I mentioned above. However before that game he had scored 5 in the last 4. In triple gameweeks he is a pretty safe bet to play a majority of minutes. The main question is, will he regather his from after a not scoring last week. Or did no goal last week mean him and/or QPR are losing form.

Ings - Burnley have pretty good fixtures too. He has 3 goals in his last 2 games. The idea with getting him is to catch him at the start of good form so he can continue scoring for a more extended period. Also it seems to be more of a differential than Austin. As burnley' main man up front he seems like a good choice to play most minutes in a triple game week. However a burnley side that has only scored 8 goals so far this season might not be your best bet. Another issue is that he has only scored 4 goals so far this season, which compared to most other strikers, is quite poor. He was one of the best strikers last year in the championship, it's just where their he can replicate his form in the Premier League. The questions with him are, Has this just been a bit of luck and will he stop scoring. Or has he hit form, and could this be a great pick for your FPL team.

    Other options
Cisse - Will probably take ayoze Perez's place after being injured, however with more cramped game weeks coming up, you won't be able to trust him playing 3 full games in a week.

Kane - Uber cheap, Question? Can he keep his place and how much playing time will he actually get. Avoid unless budget issues

Ayoze Perez - Uber cheap, been in good form however cisse will take his place soon.

The conclusion - Ings In my opinion, you want to avoid jumping on a bandwagon too late, especially for a budget player. Despite Austin with more goals recently, Ings grabs this because of his record in the Championship shows what he is capable of, plus the thought of getting him before the potential bandwagon starts.

Vargas is the key, especially due to his link-up with Isla

1 goal in 6 games without Vargas

      5 in 6 with him

Ings achieved a large proportion of his returns playing off Vokes who scored about the same I think. In the PL I believe he isn't getting the supply he used to.

Austin's stats are great over 12 games though, so its not like a flash-in the pan like the other cheapies i don't think. He's still shooting loads and getting lots of chances, unlike naismith and ulloa for example.

Ings is an interesting one. On the one hand i think he has 3 great fixtures, but on the other i think he scored 2 goals against stoke from only 2 touches in the box, and after those 3 games he has dreadful fixtures... and i like to be able to count on players i bring in for more than 3 gw's ideally.

    @Doosra:

    Caulker this season among defenders:
    - 4th for touches in the box (5th in last 6 games)
    - 2nd for attempts and shots in the box (behind Ivan)
    - since Vargas started taking set pieces his number of chances (and quality of them) seem to have increased.

Next 4 home games (in the next 7 gw's): BUR WBA CPL LEI
    - Ranked 1st, 4th, 5th, and 8th respectively in last 6 GW's in most chances conceded from set pieces.

If you consider an acceptable points-per-million-per-game, then 0.8 (which is the difference between yun and caulker) is a worthwhile investment should Caulker score just 1 goal (and get 6pts+baps). Stats indicate that he could very well get more than 1 goal, and its also pertinent that Yun could be gone in gw19-20 for the CPL & SWA games, which would cause a rotation problem if you owned him.
