It’s a short, sharp Scribbles we offer this morning as the tension ramps up ahead of tomorrow’s big kick-off. Aston Villa hope to bring back on old face in Thomas Hitzlsperger, while Roy Hodgson believes in Owen Hargreaves’ fitness. Alan Pardew offers an olive branch to Joey Barton and Tony Pulis is looking for six new players as Stoke square up to Europe. Here we go, folks:

Jose Enrique is set to sign a four-year deal with Liverpool today. Kenny Dalglish’s search for a left-back looks to now be over and with one year left on his Newcastle contract, Enrique’s transfer is thought to be around the region of £6m. More importantly, as far as Fantasy managers are concerned, Enrique is priced at just 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and can be expected to see plenty investment on the back of this move.

Alex McLeish has been linked with a move for Thomas Hitzlsperger. The Villa boss admitted yesterday he would need to trade players before making any further acquisitions but with the German available on a free, a return to Villa Park may not be out of the question. As Big Eck went on to say:

“Thomas’ name has been mentioned against a number of other players. If it came to a choice, we’d have to think about everything if we were able to get that choice. Maybe in midfield, in terms of experience, we are a little bit lacking.”

Roy Hodgson has offered Owen Hargreaves a contract at West Brom. The ex-Man United midfielder has seemingly proved his fitness to the Baggies boss and is now mulling over a move to the Hawthorns. Hodgson’s take on the situation is:

Look, we’ve done the test, we agree with you that the knee’s OK and you can play football. And of course if you’d like to come and play for us that would be lovely. But whether or not our offer is going to be interesting to him, that’s what I don’t know.

Stoke are in the market for six new signings, according to Tony Pulis . Speaking this morning, the Potters boss admitted he was looking to strengthen the club’s options up front before the end of August. With a bid in for Peter Crouch as well as Spurs team mate Wilson Palacios, it looks like being a busy three weeks ahead on the transfer front.

Both Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri won’t feature tomorrow for Arsenal. The duo were left out of Arsenal’s squad for the trip to Newcastle by Arsene Wenger and their respective exits from the Emirates are edging closer by the day.

It looks like Joey Barton may still have a part to play at Newcastle, after all. Only a week or so ago, there seemed no way back for the midfielder after the twitter debacle that saw him criticise the club, but Alan Pardew is willing to offer him a chance if Barton can prove he’s willing to give his all:

Joey will determine whether he stays. I’ve told Joey that he won’t play for me and I won’t include him unless I think he’s pulling for us. If Joey turns around to me and says that’s what he’s going to do, then he will. He’s in the process of weighing up what he needs to do.

Paul Is certain he won't make the same mistakes next season. Follow them on Twitter

    Yaya Toure – a question

Do people think he’s going to have the same impact this season? Will he play in the majority of matches?

I’ve got him in but I’ve been swaying back and forth between him and Silva (subsequently downgrading a striker, probably Carroll to Zamora).

Last minute nerves on my part.

He isnt fully fit + he limped off injured mid week.

He will play more defensivly than last year I think but will still power in with the odd goal or 2. I think there are better options than him - Downing, N'Zogs, Bale (when fixtures pick up).

Aguero + Tevez wont get much game time on Monday so perhaps he is a good shout for Swansea if his injury has cleared up.

He rotates well with Fulham and QPR I think when it comes to at least one having a relatively easy game(Sometimes not a home game though!) I've got Robinson at the moment but plan on upgrading to Cahill when people drop him because of his awful fixtures

wouldn't say definite but most likely from what i gather.
yeah prefer vorm, based on 2 things really. 1 i prefer schwarzer to given, 2 swansea and norwich rotate well with fulham but swansea conceding 11 home goals to norwich's 30 swayed me.

    NIce summary of Sunderlan's defnse from the Guardian blog;

1.26pm: Louise Taylor is here with news from Sunderland.

Steve Bruce generally loves to see Titus Bramble and Michael Turner paired in central defence but, after recovering from knee injuries sustained last season, that duo have been woeful during pre-season.Might it mean Wes Brown starting in the middle rather than at right back and finding himself partnering that unexpected survivor Anton Ferdinand at Liverpool tomorrow? Other managerial dilemmas include whether to start Simon Mignolet or Keiren Westwood in goal. Similarly will it be Phil Bardsley, last year's player of the season, or Kieran Richardson at left back. Up front I'd be surprised if Stephane Sessegnon does not play just behind Asamoah Gyan. I'm looking forward to seeing Newcastle at home to Arsenal. A slightly different player but hoping Yohan Cabaye might prove a worthy successor to Rob Lee in central midfield. Will have to wait and see whether Joey Barton starts, is benched or finds himself Zenit St Petersburg bound though latter seems remote possibility.

apparently brown has been impressive in the last couple of pre-season games. i think people are put-off by his injury record. still haven't decided between him and bramble which is frustrating the day before kick-off.
      i see it like this:
we know brown will start whereas bramble is just a likely starter.
brown perhaps more injury prone. already have agger and dunn and genuinely considering saha for gw2 so already walking a sicknote tightrope

I asked Tosey about this very same dilemma - according to the Sunderland forums the 1st choice defence for the season should be

        O'Shea Brown Bramble Bardsley

but Bramble has been poor in pre-season so might not start the season.

ok so the start of the season is looking like this:

    Given (Ruddy)
    Komapny/Gibbs/Agger (DaLaet/Simpson)
    Silva/Nzog/Downing/Moses (Walters)
    Rooney/Carrol(C)/ Zamora

Can anybody see any potential problems? im thinking downgrade agger to enrique once hes settled and upgrade elsewhere?

DJ and Boothroyd likely to start, what does this mean for Taarabt? Considering Ramsey instead.
