After taking a look at those teams with Strong fixtures to follow over the next four-to-six Gameweeks, we now assess those with tougher upcoming schedules. North east pair Sunderland and Newcastle face some testing times, whilst bottom two Burnley and Leicester also have little reason for festive cheer.

Newcastle

“frisking

The Magpies proved their mettle by putting an end to Chelsea’s unbeaten run last Saturday, but must now navigate a horrendous next six if they are to further their cause. Alan Pardew’s men face a tricky encounter with Everton at St James’ Park, as well as three of the toughest away trips around as they make their way to Arsenal, United and Chelsea.

With injury and suspension hitting hard, the Magpies are likely to struggle to rediscover the defensive resilience shown between Gameweeks 8-12 anytime soon, meaning that Daryl Janmaat will need to rely on his attacking raids down the right to earn his owners further returns. Further forward, those eyeing up striker Papiss Cisse after his weekend brace are advised to hold off for now whilst his minutes, and the schedule, look uncertain.

Southampton

“frisking

The Saints are struggling under the strain of expectation after their early season form, and the load could yet increase across the Christmas period. A trip to Burnley is next on the agenda and will at least afford them some respite, but beyond that things still looks unmistakably bleak – Everton, Chelsea and Arsenal make their way to St Mary’s in their next three home encounters, with a visit to Old Trafford lying in wait beyond that.

Without a clean sheet in their last four, owners of Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne will have been weighing up an exit route, and that strategy is unlikely to change bearing in mind their imminent schedule. Graziano Pelle, meanwhile, found his scoring boots for the first time in seven appearances against United on Monday, but that return to form could be quickly curtailed, and the Italian will still be hard-tasked to reclaim the plethora of owners he has lost over recent weeks.

Stoke

“frisking

Saturday’s triumphant win over Arsenal brought a three-match losing streak to a close for the Potters, and a trip to Crystal Palace this weekend will offer them a chance to build momentum. That is sure to come in handy, however, as the fixtures then take a severe turn for the worse for Mark Hughes’ side, who meet Chelsea and Everton in their next two and also face consecutive match-ups with United and Arsenal in Gameweeks 20 and 21.

It would be fair to say that Bojan has finally found his feet at the Brittania, and the former Barcelona starlet – alongside fellow striker Peter Crouch – turned in a great advertisement for their budget forward services against the Gunners. However, both are now sure to be tested against some of the league’s tightest defences in the coming weeks, whilst the chances of the Potters’ own rearguard managing their first shutout since Gameweek 6 looks doubtful. Jon Walters’ recent renaissance – with three goals in four – may struggle to continue over that spell.

Also Be Wary Of…

Arsenal
The Gunners may have underlined their potential in last night’s mauling of Galatasaray, but managers should be cautious before jumping on board without a look at their next five fixtures, which contain three tricky away encounters at Liverpool, West Ham and Southampton. Owners of the suspended Calum Chambers will be even more tempted by the idea of getting rid of the young defender as Mathieu Debuchy returns to action, whilst the likes of Alexis Sanchez, Aaron Ramsey and Danny Welbeck will have to be at their best for the Gunners to prosper over the festive spell.

Burnley
A 2-0 loss to QPR will have come as a bitter blow to Sean Dyche’s men, who had finally strung together a series of results prior to Saturday’s bottom of the table scrap. A potentially spirit-wrecking next four now awaits the Clarets, who visit Spurs and Man City on either side of home clashes with Southampton and Liverpool. With Christmas rotation on the cards, owners of George Boyd may be forced to call upon his services across those fixtures, though he is likely to struggle to replicate his timely Gameweek 14 strike. Up top, Danny Ings has fetched returns in three of his last four outings but his worth as a budget asset looks set for a stiff test.

Leicester
The Foxes are without a win since Gameweek 5, and their chances of turning that dire form around look slim over the upcoming schedule. Nigel Pearson’s side face a trip to West Ham sandwiched in between two home meetings with Man City and Spurs in their next three, and whilst Leonardo Ulloa has showed glimpses of his early season with a goal and two assists in his last three, the striker – who is expected to recover from a calf knock – will have his work cut out to maintain that form in the lead up to Christmas.

Thanks, like you say, long term it's a good move but it's just an 8 pointer which I'm at pains to do.

Saying that, I guess a lot will take at least a 4 this week so for my situation it's only like a -4 with regards to overall rank.

My side will be pretty sick going into Christmas too with those two added.

Is it just me or have all the scoring CBs disappeared?

Vermaelen, Vertonghen, Terry a couple seasons back were competing with Baines as big hitting defenders.

Baines.. is he becoming a headache? 😯

I know he's had tough fixtures, but is anyone else considering phasing Baines out in the next 1-2 GW's?

His scores in his last 4 gw's: WHM 0 (injured), tot 1, HUL 1, mci 2.... even with tough fixtures that return just isn't good enough, especially if he blanks again vs QPR.

I value players being nailed on so would probably avoid Zabaleta, but would strongly consider two options: Cresswell, or (don't laugh) - Skrtel...

    - Cresswell has LEI HUL WBA in the 3 GW's that I would use him in, and he has 5-5-9-15-2 in his last 5 home games.
    - Liverpool have 3 CS's in their last 6, have bur SWA LEI sun avl after their next 2, whilst Skrtel has averaged 6 points in his last 3 appearances and is near the top of the "touches in the box" stats for defenders recently as well while being the only really nailed-on liverpool defender.

I think it'll come down to two things:
    1. Whether or not Baines performs vs QPR
    2. Whether or not I need money elsewhere. If I do then Baines will become expendable as his 7.3m pricetag is becoming increasingly hard to justify in the absence of CS's and with relatively tough fixtures ahead. (QPR sot STO new hul MCI).

Anyone got any thoughts, comments, or suggestions on other alternatives? 🙂

Exactly what I gonna do. If Baines Fail to give me attacking points against QPR, He will go for Skrtel or Mancity Defence since I have got Cresswell.

Nice, glad I'm not the only mad-man. Baines will surely score a goal the week I sell him though.... That's what happened the week i sold Caulker haha

Will buy Hart this week so not keen on any of the other City defs who are all rotation risks to some extent, including kompany due to his injury

Not having Baines is very annoying when other in ML constantly keep getting those odd points. Safest is to keep him and wait. But if you are chasing big time then differentials can work. Like Downgrading defense and upgrade the attack

how so? Skrtel has played every minute of every game apart from gw3-4 when he had a slight knock. He seems to be the only CB who rodgers trusts this season

Zabaleta will surely be rotated somewhat in the easier fixtures around christmas too one would think

Zaba is first choice, but I can't see him playing all 3 of the christmas fixtures within 6 days (wba BUR SUN), whereas I can see that happening with Skrtel for sure.

In any case, I'm buying Hart this week and think thats enough City defensive coverage 😀

      1. rickardinho
        • 11 Years
        11 years, 11 days ago

Why not? I'd take advantage of Hutton(SUN) and Caulker(bur) in the other GW's when I'd otherwise bench them, when Cresswell has really tough games. I don't see the issue with benching Cresswell, its 5.5, but its also 1.8 less than Baines (who i actually benched against city as Hutton scored instead :P)

It does seem to go like that with baines. His run of steady points earlier this season was an exception not the usual pattern. He usually seems to have long runs of blanks followed by explosions. Yet he always ends up one of the top defenders so you know the points will come from somewhere.

It does feel like mirallas reduces his effectiveness and steals his free kicks a little bit so if you can use the money better elsewhere for a bit the why not.

But as a non owner I am bricking it this week.

      1. rickardinho
        • 11 Years

I agree. Penalties and assists are hard to predict and can come in any game (eg. at old trafford earlier this season).

I did say that I would only sell him if I need the money, which atm I don't thankfully. Just thinking "out loud" here, and appreciate peoples opinions on the matter.

He's what I'd label as 'about right' when we look at a scale as such:

        Overpriced: RVP
        About right: Baines
        Bargain: Austin

For me this means keep him for good fixtures, sell for bad ones. I'd say his fixtures are pretty good now if you already have him.

I've actually toyed with getting him in for a hit this week to play him over naylor and obviously to have him for future weeks as well. The mirallas effect probably has done enough to put me off but I still might

I'm trying to find YouTube videos of famous goals as similar as possible to goals scored by my 7aside game, to spice up a match report.

So. Any suggestions for goals that fit these descriptions?

    1. Cross from right wing, diving header
    2. Striker robs defender and scores
    3. Strike from 40 yards onto the top corner (OK I'm exaggerating. Thinking le tissier v Blackburn for this!)

Your team must be good if you scoring diving headers. Can't recall ever seeing one really come off

      1. i can't think of RW.. but try the henrik larsson goal vs bulgaria at Euro2004 from an Erik Edman cross. Best diving header i've ever seen

      2. Suarez probably has several of these last season, check his compilations

      3. Clarence Seedorf missile from his ajax days, literally 40 yards, without any dip whatsoever

McCarthy (have Fabianski) > Guzan (or Pantilimon)

That's great, thanks! Affirms my rationale for the hit. I won't take a -4 on Fabianski, but it makes sense on the bench keeper as it's most likely either a -2 hit or a 2 pt gain potentially. Leaning this way now.

United flying and in great form vs a poor Liverpool who will want to bounce back from midweek loss and elimination from the champions league... Or City vs Liecester.. Or Chelsea vs Hull..

    A) Rooney
    B) Yaya (Pens)
    C) Costa

For captain? can not pick one.

    Guzan (McCarthy)
    Azpi Chambers Jags Duff Moore
    Sanchez Haz Downing Siggy Boyd
    Austin Costa Aguero

on the flip side, he's different this year

this year he's scoring 1 goal against weaker teams, not doing well against better teams... so far

Always a risk with Baines captain. even can concede at 90th minute.
But yeah with Austin out Qpr has very minimal chance of scoring.

or could help you put a smackdown on them 😉

i wouldn't turn back for good... but i'm not sure if he needs more rest or more game time

he was taking shots from further away than usual against newcastle... if other teams watch the tape, they may have some ideas how to slow him down

on the flip side, drogba against newcastle showed that the defense could be broken down and ran deep into the box... so, since he's at chelsea currently as a sort of manager-in-training, can he coach costa on how to crash the box in new and different ways?

just some random thoughts on prescription flu meds... my minds jelly, so who knows if this makes a whip of sense
