Our weekly members article focussing on the Gameweek captaincy contenders arrives once again this Friday evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

As Fantasy managers reassess their options in light of Sergio Aguero’s knee injury, Diego Costa has emerged as the number one candidate ahead of Chelsea’s home encounter with Hull. The Spain international has earned 36% of the votes cast so far and has scored in all but one of his six home appearances, with only QPR keeping him at bay.

Eden Hazard is hot on Costa’s heels, though. The wide man has received over 27% of the votes after scoring in each of the last four in front of his own fans – Hazard has averaged 10 points per appearance over those fixtures and has collected 10 bonus points, whereas Costa has failed to earn bonus at home since Gameweek 4.

Man City pair Yaya Toure (6%) and Edin Dzeko (3%) are also in contention ahead of a trip to Leicester. Toure has now netted in three of his last four, and with Aguero out of the picture, has dead-ball duties to bolster his appeal – as evidenced by last weekend’s spot-kick winner over Everton. Having just returned from injury, Dzeko will be looking to improve upon a series of displays which have seen him score in only one of his 11 league appearances so far.

Alexis Sanchez has collected 5% of the votes ahead of Arsenal’s home clash with a Newcastle side hit hard by injuries and suspension – a single goal in four since being moved back to the flank is hardly reassuring, though a midweek rest from Champions League duties could re-energise the Chilean. Robin van Persie is also back on the radar. The Dutchman’s brace at St Mary’s on Monday means he’s now bagged three goals and an assist in his last three ahead of a derby encounter at home to Liverpool.

Going on the voting so far, then, both Romelu Lukaku and Wilfried Bony look ideal differentials for Gameweek 16, with around 2% backing them with the armband. Lukaku has scored (and earned bonus) in each of his last four starts at Goodison ahead of QPR’s visit, whilst Bony welcomes Spurs to the Liberty in phenomenal form, after serving up seven goals and an assist in his last nine appearances.

I've thought long hard about who I'm going to replace Aguero with. I had narrowed it down to Bony and Dzeko but am going for Lukaku as QPR at home is too good to resist. I don't see Bony scoring big against Spurs and then away to Hull although I may bring him in for the home game against Villa if he's still on fire. Dzeko is too risky and so I will keep an eye on his form and bring in Yaya next week for the so called easy games.

Doing a bit of research to find an answer to that endlessly thrilling conundrum: if you have a goalkeeper and their real life deputy (i.e. Krulliot), which one should you play?

Trying to map out the possible scenarios...

Keeper gets injured before 60 mins, keeper gets injured after 60 mins, keeper gets sent off and concedes a penalty, keeper gets sent off and doesn't concede a penalty. Any other important ones that I've missed?

    1. Davros
      • 16 Years
      11 years, 1 month ago

That's quite interesting in a sad anoraky FPL sort of way.
I'm guessing that most in match swaps would occur due to red card rather than injury, meaning you're more likely to benefit from always playing your reserve keeper, especially as it may immediately give them a chance at a penalty save. Mmm

Can anyone give me a good reason to take a hit to get a playing keeper in (even if you have 2 non starters)?

It only pays off if your replacement keeper scores 4pts. Which is basically a clean sheet punt.

You stay without. That's 2 points I have over you before we start.

Aguero and Fab to Costa and Yaya

Aguero and Boyd to Dzeko and Yaya

Aguero and Chambers to Costa and Baines

I'd go with either b or c but never a!

Surely you want fabs back asap?!!!

Team in need of pretty major surgery. 1FT, 0.1 in bank.

    Begovic (Gilks)
    Clyne - N Taylor - Yun (Dummett - Chambers)
Sigurdsson - Boyd - Sanchez - Sterling (Fabregas)
    Costa - ? - ? (Aguero - Austin)

Considering Fabregas & Aguero to Hazard & Dzeko for this week. Defence would still be in pretty poor shape but allows me to bank funds for next GW.

Damn, I was hoping Sergio wouldn't drop again, really need to make a choice tonight then.
    Can't get Bony, so:
    Sakho
    Lukaku
    Dzeko
    Giroud

    Pick one

Thanks guys. Just done him to Sakho. Shame I have to replace Krul, otherwise I'd go -4 for a top midfielder, or should I do a -8 or go without a keeper?

Hoping Coleman repays my patience, though if they're poor again, a switch to Zabaleta might be on the cards. I do think Lukaku is the outstanding captaincy choice if you have him, though.

Me neither, will be hiding behind coach on Monday. Anything that's 2-0 or less will be fine. QPR goal would be good and no pts for lukaku or Everton defence. Not asking too much am I?

    Right..decided to take a 2nd hit 😎

    foster
clichy naylor yun --- chetser chamber
    Yaya siggy eriksen sanchez hazard
    Rooney kane --- austin

    A: chambers >>> zaba (have clichy already tho) (- 4 )
    B: chambers >> azpi ( - 4 )
    C: chmabers >> terry ( - 4 )

    Leaning towards C with terry
    - afraid clichy gets benched in which case my def is really crappy this gw
    - can't find a cheaper def who rotates well with rest of my def hence going for big hitter
    - prefer a Chelsea def as if I get zaba...will have 3 city players and might need dzeko if he hits form
    - between Chelsea..leaning towards terry for goal threat and I think is less prone to rotation

Is Hart worth it? Or is an expensive keeper a luxury? Top teams concede with very few save points generally
