Eden Hazard and Andre Schurrle continue their fine scoring form as Chelsea clinch a place in the last four of the Capital One Cup. Southampton’s misery continues with a 1-0 loss at Sheffield United. Angel di Maria could return for United this weekend, Glen Johnson is sidelined for Liverpool, whilst Emmanuel Adebayor is back in the Tottenham fold ahead of the visit of Burnley.

Hazard Nets as Jose’s Men March On

Chelsea swept aside Derby County 3-1 in their Capital One Cup quarter final tie last night. Though the likes of Diego Costa, Oscar and Gary Cahill were handed the night off, Jose Mourinho still named a fairly strong starting XI for the fixture. Cesar Azpilicueta and Cesc Fabregas returned to the fold after missing out at the weekend, with Eden Hazard getting his name on the scoresheet once again with the Blues’ opener, before Filipe Luis and Andre Schurrle went on to secure the win – the latter has now scored in each of his two starts over the last week.

The Scout Says: Last night’s strike from Hazard added to his goal and assist against Hull at the weekend, and furthered the case for the Belgian as the midfielder of choice in Chelsea’s ranks. Nonetheless, Fabregas’ owners will still take plenty of heart from yesterday’s cup victory – the Spaniard was fielded in the hole behind Didier Drogba for the entirety of the match and grabbed his sixteenth assist of the season. Although he is almost certain to be withdrawn back to a deeper midfield role for the Blues’ next league encounter, the 9.6 valued Fabregas’ creativity should ensure his owners stick despite the allure of Hazard, though with many Fantasy managers having budget to spare, the duo even offer a double-up option in the centre of the park. Although Mourinho has spoken of rotation before now, Chelsea’s trip to Stoke is not until next Monday evening and affords plenty of time for recovery for those involved last night.

SAINTS SLIP TO ANOTHER DEFEAT

Southampton took their losing streak to five successive matches after being defeated 1-0 by League One side Sheffield United in their cup encounter last night. With Graziano Pelle sitting out a one-match ban and Dusan Tadic rested, Shane Long led the line for the Saints, whilst Ryan Bertrand was fielded on the left wing as Matt Target was handed the left-back berth.

The Scout Says: The Saints’ poor form continues, and with Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and Man United in their next five, investment in any of their assets looks unlikely for the time being. To compound matters, Morgan Schneirdelin and Victor Wanyama both earned their fifth bookings of the season last night, and are now banned for the Saints’ home clash with the Toffees this weekend. With Jack Cork injured, Ronald Koeman’s options in midfield are now seriously depleted, and James Ward-Prowse looks likely to retain his starting spot from last Saturday – without another regular senior central midfielder available, Koeman may be forced to switch up his tactics against the Merseysiders or bring centre-half Toby Alderweireld into the middle of the park to cope. Fantasy managers holding Everton assets will be a little more optimistic on the back of yesterday’s events.

DI MARIA EDGING CLOSER TO COMEBACK

Reports suggest that Angel Di Maria could return from the hamstring injury that his kept him out of United’s last three fixtures in time to face Aston Villa this Saturday.

The Scout Says: Will Di Maria’s comeback instigate another change in tactics from Louis Van Gaal? The main issue for the Dutchman concerns the form of Juan Mata, who has excelled in Di Maria’s absence, scoring twice and picking up an assist; in light of that, the Spaniard will be extremely unlucky to be dropped, and that could see Van Gaal return to the set-up utilised against Hull back in Gameweek 13. Di Maria was forced off only 13 minutes into that match, but prior to that, he, Mata, Wayne Rooney and Robin Van Persie all took to the field. A similar scenario spells danger for Villa this weekend, who have conceded in four of their last five and will need to be on tip top form to stop that attacking quartet.

Johnson Misery for Reds

Reports suggest that Liverpool’s Glen Johnson is set to miss the festive period with the groin injury suffered against Man United on Sunday.

The Scout Says: With just two wins in their last eight league matches and having shipped three goals in their derby defeat to United at the weekend, the Johnson news will only deepen Liverpool’s current woes. There is light at the end of the tunnel, however, as Brendan Rodgers side now face three homes matches in their next four (ARS, SWA, LEI) and, considering they have conceded only once in their last three at Anfield, defensive returns may well now be on the cards. With Johnson out, Javier Manquillo should be called upon as a like-for-like replacement at right back, and could offer substantial value for his meagre 4.6 price tag in the next few weeks.

SAGNA OPEN TO CENTRAL ROLE

Bacary Sagna has revealed that he is ready to fill in for Vincent Kompany at centre back if the Man City skipper is ruled out for a significant period of time with a hamstring problem:

“I have played a few times at centre-back for Arsenal. If I have to play I will play, and always try to give 100 per cent and my best for the team. But hopefully he (Kompany) will be ready for Crystal Palace.”

The Scout Says: City boast a great festive fixture list (CPL, wba, BUR, SUN) and investment in their rearguard looks a wise move, though it seems unlikely that Sagna will be the first in line to benefit should Kompany miss out. Eliaquim Mangala and Martin Demichelis are most expected to fill the two central defensive spots, and Dedryck Boyata is also in the mix. Demichelis certainly looks the safest option in City’s backline right now, all the more so given that Mangala currently balances on the suspension tightrope with four yellows. Should Manuel Pellegrini make the surprise move of turning to Sagna, however, it is Pablo Zabaleta whose stock looks set to benefit the most – with no competition for the right-back berth, the 6.4 priced Argentine’s minutes would be secure until Kompany’s return.

ADEBAYOR BACK FOR TOTTENHAM

Emmanuel Adebayor has linked back up with Tottenham following a week’s compassionate leave and will now be available for his side’s meeting with Burnley this weekend.

The Scout Says: Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that Adebayor won’t be ready to face Newcastle in the Capital One Cup this evening due to his lack of training, but that will only increase the Togo international’s chances of involvement against Burnley, with his team-mates unlikely to be as refreshed come Saturday. Harry Kane’s owners are unlikely to be too concerned, however, as Roberto Soldado looks the player at risk after failing to find the net in his last three appearances. Kane, on the other hand, looks key to Spurs’ efforts right now, and has four great fixtures (BUR, lei, cpl, SUN) in his next six to carry on the run of form that has seen him notch returns in three of the last five Gameweeks.

      Baines // Azpill // Yun

      Bony // Costa // Austin

      Elliot // Naylor // Hutton // Boyd

2FT's and 1.7m in the bank..
Is Baines and Siggy out for 5m Def and Yaya the moves to make???

Austin has scored in his last 4 home games. But West Brom are tight at the back, especially away. Will probably chicken out and go for the safer option of Costa.

      For me:

Head - Yaya(c) - Palace's poor record for fouls/pens conceded away makes odds of at least 1 goal for Yaya good. Plus the 'he needs to step up' argument - taking responsibility (and more shots) without a striker in front of him.

Heart - Alexis(c) - Potential to be explosive in what has typically been a fast and furious fixture with 2 open, attacking sides.

I usually lean toward heart in these situations. Esp. the morning after a few beers on Friday.

I'm more tempted by Sanchez I must admit. It is probably between Yaya and Sanchez for me...but see below, those Sat midday matches do present barriers to nervous fantasy managers.

It doesn't really work like that in the games though. Sanchez is essentially playing where Walcott did last couple of seasons, and he scored pretty well off the shoulder of Giroud.

Sanchez taking up positions on the right flank is no bad thing against Liverpool - massive gap between wing back and centre back has been a problem for Liverpoo;. Very tempting to give him the armband.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

How much does the time and day of the match effect your captaincy decision?

There have been many posts and community articles over the years to disprove the myth that teams score less in a lunch time kick off, or are more likely to score at other times. Truth is the strength of the fixture not the time or the date are important to the outcome.

But for fantasy managers there is still a reluctance to captain a player in a Saturday midday kick off for fear of a blank and a ruined weekend. Similarly some love to captain a player on a Monday evening kick off. This gives them hope all weekend, even if the odds of success are just the same as if it were played on Saturday lunchtime.

So how much does the time and day of the match in a Gameweek effect your choice of captaincy and squad selection?

I must admit I'm guilty of letting it influencing me. Looking at captaincy choices this weekend I'm reluctant to put the armband on Yaya Toure as it is the first match and is a Sat lunchtime kick off. But if it was the Monday night clash I'd have no hesitation in captaining him. Odds of success are the same though.

People think slightly on the pessimistic side with early kick-offs. Sure if your captain fails it could leave you down but on the other hand if they do well (Aguero springs to mind) you could set yourself up for an amazing high. 🙂

I am more concerned about practical factors such as weather.

For example, Chelsea's game next week against Stoke is a 8PM kick-off, and the met dept forecasts says that it will rain that night with temperatures expected to be staying somewhere around 5-7C.

Hence, I am pretty much reluctant to captain either Costa or Hazard and my alternative option here is Charlie Austin, even though QPR will be starting at 3PM on Saturday.

So not really concerned about any of the myths that you are talking about.

Doesn't really affect the decision for me. If you make an informed and logical choice, the time should be irrelevant. Only take into consideration midweek games or double game weeks.

This. A ridiculous superstition for many; one step up from not captaining a player because of a perceived tendency for them to not play well against teams wearing stripes or something.

Doesn't affect it at all. As far as I know, the one reason why some people are reluctant to captain someone in the early kick off is because of the psychological blow if your captain blanks. Personally I don't even look at the time/day of the games - I just choose the player I think will get me the most points, whether that player plays in the early game or the very last one of the GW.

I think the fact that a game is on TV has a bit more bearing for me, but it's time doesn't. I couldn't tell you how many early kick offs I've captained this season, but I am certain I wasn't worried about the Spurs game being too early for Kun, and we know how that worked out.

With this weekend, I'm leaning more towards Yaya than Austin. When I look beyond the fact that City have no strikers and that WBA have tightened up, it might just be because I know i'll be watching Yaya, and not Austin. Where a standout choice isn't present, the live game could sway me. I'm not worried about the time though.

Definitely the 'how I'll feel for the rest of the weekend' thing doesn't come into it for me. If I'm going to have a bad GW, I'm going to have a bad GW - so why delay knowing! In some ways it's better cos you can get on with your w/e.

I do consider how teams and players have done for me in previous early kick-offs.
I seem to have it in my head that City at home at lunchtime tend to score well - and I've had good experiences with that, same for Arsenal at home. I haven't looked into the actual historical results though but I would if I could!

I was actually thinking of the early kick-off as a reason to captain Yaya myself, because of that.

Part of why I play is to enhance the experience of watching the games - so I don't mind captaining a Saturday-luncher. However, if I'm travelling to a game during this time then it would really put me off.

I'm waiting on Mirallas news regarding Baines tbh. It's likely that yaya may make room for Eriksen for me but it all depends on his yc situation. I'm also aware that I've got 4 players out for acon/asia cup in a few weeks so they will be my priority

Some guy on twitter uses this analysis tool to fond the best captain option. Since he started using it (5 gwks ago) his captain has only got a bad score once, that was where aguero got injured. Using this tool the best choice for the armband based on his analysis is Costa. Interesting.... as his form hasn't been that good of late.

Not that bad a decision, even with the benefit of hindsight IMO. If you could afford to bench either of the Saints fullbacks, keeping to play them after their 'difficult' fixtures made sense. Plus, they are still rising.

          • 13 Years

They don't have 3 good consecutive games until March. Not even 2 good ones until February. That's a long time to have a 5.something on your bench doing nothing.

I think this post explains a little bit why we've all been getting confused that Clyne is still rising, and could signal the start of their decline in value.

Who do we think will score more points between now and Jan 1st:
    Zabaleta
    Benteke
    Lukaku
    Bony

The reason I ask is that I'm faced with upgrading Kane (after the Burnley game) or upgrading Yun -> Zab now...
Is it crazy that I think Zabaleta will score more?
Is it crazier that I will then have Ivanovic/Baines/Zabaleta in my backline!!!

So my problem is i don't know who to put on the bench..

    panti - krul
    chambers - baines - azpi - dummett - wisdom
    sanchez - haz - silva - downing - siggy
    kane - austin - rooney

Only 6.1m to spend, so that only leaves me with Demi/Clichy/Mangala(4 YC's)...then I think it's not a good idea transferring out a fit player especially since I own Duff and yaya is also on 4 Yc's.

    Forster (Elliot)
    Wisdom Baines Dummett (Chambers Moore)
    Yaya Sanchez Hazard Siggy (Boyd)
    Austin Rooney Bony

Forster is home to Everton which could always result in a CS.
