Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 17 – The Weak

Having assessed those teams with Strong upcoming schedules yesterday evening, we now turn our attentions to those with less favourable fixtures across the next four-to-six Gameweeks. Three of the current top six face testing times ahead, whilst nearer the bottom of the table, Burnley face a tough task to steer clear of the drop zone.

Arsenal

“frisking

The Gunners are set for a tough time over Christmas, with four of their next six fixtures on the road. Trips to Liverpool, West Ham, Southampton and City will test their resolve, though it’s worth noting that Arsenal have failed to score just once all season – away to Chelsea – and with Alexis Sanchez, Danny Welbeck, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud all offering options in the final third, their potent attack could still prevail.

Home clashes against QPR and Stoke certainly offer a greater degree of optimism but with Laurent Koscielny still struggling due to injury, it remains to be seen if the north London side can improve upon a run of two clean sheets in six. Fit-again Mathieu Debuchy, at 5.2, is the cheapest regular, though Calum Chambers should benefit if Arsene Wenger continues to court caution with Koscielny’s fitness over the busy period.

Southampton

“frisking

It’s five defeats in a row now for the Saints after last night’s demoralising cup loss at Sheffield United. With their confidence at a season-low, it’s difficult to see how Ronald Koeman can turn his side around in light of a schedule which pits them against Everton, Chelsea, Arsenal and United over the short-term, whilst trips to Palace and Newcastle will be far from straightforward, either.

Koeman has Morgan Schneiderlin, Victor Wanyama and Florin Gardos suspended for the Toffees visit, though will be hoping his decision to rest Dusan Tadic in midweek will reinvigorate the Serbian, who now has one assist in eight appearances. Graziano Pelle served a one-match suspension against the Blades but has similarly poor form, whilst a run of five matches without a clean sheet looks very unlikely to be rectified anytime soon.

Stoke

“frisking

After taking four points from their last two, Mark Hughes’ side are in decent form right now. Whether the Potters can maintain their recent revival looks debatable, though – showdowns with Chelsea, Everton, United and Arsenal in the next five Gameweeks suggest otherwise.

Certainly, Stoke’s defence has looked one to avoid for some time anyway – a single shut-out in the last 13 rounds of fixtures should have alarms bells ringing for anyone still holding the likes of Asmir Begovic or Ryan Shawcross. Jon Walters’ run of three goals and as many assists in his last six looks to be severely tested here – all the more so if Bojan fails to shrug off the hip complaint that forced him off at the weekend. Peter Crouch has notched in back-to-back outings since a first-team return but there are plenty of budget options around with far better fixtures.

Also Be Wary Of…

Chelsea
Clearly, Jose Mourinho’s side have the form, the class and the confidence to make a mockery of any fixture list and anyone owning Chelsea players will be more than happy to hold. Nonetheless, with four road trips in the next six (sto, sou, tot, swa), Eden Hazard’s owners will be desperate for a major improvement, bearing in mind the Belgian has just two assists away from Stamford Bridge all season. Last night’s cup opener at Derby will hopefully be a sign of things to come.

Like Hazard, Oscar has also toiled on his travels and earned points only once away from home, though the pair, along with Cesc Fabregas, also welcome West Ham and Newcastle to the Bridge over that period. Diego Costa’s 12 goals in 13 appearances continue to bring in new owners – rested in midweek, he could now be immune to his manager’s talk of festive rotation.

Surprisingly, Chelsea have managed just one away clean sheet in eight attempts but with four shut-outs in their last five in the league, Mourinho’s men have stepped up their resilience as they start to grind out results over the winter period.

Burnley
Sean Dyche’s side face three testing trips (tot, mcy, new) and a home encounter with Liverpool over the next four rounds of fixtures before the schedule smiles a little kinder around the Gameweek 21 mark. Bearing in mind that Burnley have scored more than a single goal on just two occasions so far, Danny Ings’ owners may be thinking twice over holding across the festive period, though three goals and a pair of assists in the previous five highlights his form. Elsewhere, budget favourite George Boyd may struggle for more than two-pointers, whilst a run of two clean sheets in 11 league outings underlines the Clarets’ issues at the back.

Newcastle
The Magpies welcome back Steven Taylor and Moussa Sissoko from suspension just in time for a derby clash with Sunderland this weekend. Alan Pardew’s side have now conceded in each of their last four, though, and the white-hot atmosphere of a Tyne-Wear encounter is always unpredictable at both ends of the pitch. After that, Newcastle face United, Everton and Chelsea in the subsequent four, with only a visit from Burnley providing the calm amidst a Christmas storm. Papiss Cisse showed against Chelsea he’s capable of producing regardless of opponent but with Pardew keen to manage his minutes, it remains to be seen how much pitch time he’ll be afforded over the packed festive period.

Think I am in the same boat as a lot of people on here with both Siggy and Boyd as 4th and 5th mids and looking at a way to get City coverage, but have many considered this?

I'm not too happy playing Siggy away from home (form: 13, 2, 3, 2, 2, 2, 2) and Boyd doesn't seem to be enough bench cover over the xmas period but bringing in Milner for Boyd seems gives a stronger bench and rotates perfectly home/away with Siggy for the next 5 weeks up until wildcard. Rotating the home fixtures gives Milner (CPL), Siggy (AVL), Milner (BUR), Milner (SUN), Siggy (WHM).

Those who will be quick to say "but who would ever want to play Milner" well comparing his stats against Nasri and Silva he could arguably be the best option on the evidence so far. He has more shots in the box (10) vs both Nasri (9) and Silva (8); more touches in the box (53) than Silva (50) and Nasri (40); also he has created more chances (32) than both Silva (24) and Nasri (29).

Also the comparison with players is pretty fair as they have all played similar minutes (Milner 830, Silva 871 and Nasri 808 mins)

Hmm but those stats does not really turn into points. I would have a cheeky punt on lamps.

Lamps is also an option, if Pellegrini says anything in the press conference I'll get him in for sure. But minutes are a huge risk, but City do need goals from somewhere with Aguero/Dzeko/Jovetic all out so it does make a lot of sense to give him some more gametime over the next few mtaches

Haha yeah. What catch my attention is he starts last game with dzeko upfront. It means city needs lamp attacking threat imo. So now a strikerless city might indicate lamps starting the next 2.

Cannot see him start all 3 in christmas though..so definitely he is more risky than milner in terms of play time

Hes done well off the bench this season too and at 5.4m its low risk considering the price. We all know how good he can be for goals/assists so if he gets time he should do well, when he starts of capable of matching the big 10m mids even now in his old age - he's City's 2nd top scorer after all I think?

I think Boyd ➡ Milner as your 5th mid is certainly a good move.

Don't let others put you off it.

I'd prob just wait and see how Pellegrini lines up this weekend as his false#9 before deciding which City mid you want to get.

You wouldn't want to have Milner if he starts on the bench and comes in as a 20 min sub for Nasri/Navas/Lampard

Yaya/Silva is probably the safest bet out of all of them but would prob need to make room.

I'm personally holding off until after this weekend and then picking up SIlva unless he rises before this weekend.

I'm most tempted by Lamps if Jovetic is out for a while and they persist playing a false 9. I think they'll need his goal scoring instincts playing behind the false 9.

Definitely a good move strengthening that fifth midfielder spot over the festive season. Personally I'm holding off on City investment for the moment until we have a better view of who (if anyone) steps up from midfield to be a contender. In the meantime I've upgraded Marney to Eriksen who is in great form with two excellent fixtures coming up. Means Siggy will be benched this weekend. I'm not 100% comfortable with that to be honest but it does give me great bench cover at least.

Siggy is weak for away game but no one has doubt with him when he plays home. Thus I have him to rotate with Moses (earlier), Bolasie and now Downing. It works pretty well for me.

    Costa Bony Austin

Looks fine on paper but have dropped from 1.7k to 12k in the last month so it's not going well. Very very tempted to Baines> Zab. I got those great hauls from Baines which helped me a lot but he's dried up. Hard to look past Zabs form.

There are two rankings, overall and 2nd segment ranking. 2nd seg ranking are good for those who missed first few weeks 🙂
Fixtures arent great and trying to get as many sure starters as possible. RvP might get rested for 1 game.
Other option is switching to 4-4-2 as auto-formation change isnt available. This gives 1 backup for each position 😛
But RvP is worth a punt. Have 12 transfers, so can get him and take him out later...

It happens, all about priorities 😀
You must be having many transfers left? 3-4 transfers and you are good to go 🙂

This is the first year I've played it, seems OK. Unlimited transfers each week is a trap!

    Cheers lads, here's my team:

    De Gea

    Clyne / Terry / Dummett /

    Hazard / Siggy / Eriksen / Sanchez / Barkley

    Austin / Costa

    SUBS: Vaz Te Chambers Hutton

If you want to see my team and some of the options I've laid out, go here:

What are your thoughts on transferring out Siggy or Barkely + downgrading Clyne to bring in another defender?

Or, getting rid of Siggy AND Barkley and bringing in Nasri and Mata?

    Any thoughts much appreciated.

Is Oscar to Sterling with a punt with Pool's upcoming fixtures, and the fact he's playing forward? I'm thinking I don't need a double up on Chelsea mid?

    Current side:
    Guzan McCarthy
    Baines Terry Naylor Wisdom Yun
Sanchez Hazard Yaya Toure Oscar Siggy
    Rooney Austin Kane

    Cheers!

Yeah you have a nice squad too Jared. Not really- I don't see goal keepers as that important. On wildcard in Jan will look to get Pantimillion as my back up.

I'm a Liverpool fan but they are just tough to watch this season ! Sturbridge is a absolute bust can't stay healthy ! Balo just sucks this season !! Sterling has lost confidence in himself wide open against de gea lady week and couldn't finish !!! Just terrible !

hi guys i m thinking of whether a WC will serve me well from now until gw22...its a 6 week wc, not sure to play it or save for DGW

    current team on -4

    heaton gilks
    wisdom yun bartley baines N.taylor
    sanchez hazard siggy mirallas downing
    austin RVP costa

    new team with 0.4itb

    Mcgregor Hamer
    hutton cissokho yun B.davies Demi
    eriksen hazard yaya Isgrove sanchez
    austin bony RVP

got in Isgrove since all my 5 defenders are at home for gw19 n 20 where most rotation occurs..hopefully 2 playing sub with good fixtures are enough.

this wc team allows me some city players, eriksen and bony. also allow me to take out heaton with bad fixtures. if eriksen fails i got 0.4m itb to get nasri or silva.

what do u think? or will i be better off with my current team?
