Our pre-Gameweek members article which focuses on the main captaincy contenders arrives once again this evening. As always, we take a three-part approach which includes the weekly poll standings, the Opta statistics and our Rate My Team projections to help steer your thoughts on the armband conundrum.

The Captain Poll

Alexis Sanchez is the runaway leader of this week’s poll as Arsenal prepare to host Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon. Selected by 50%, the Chilean has produced returns in eight of his nine home starts this season and served up four double-figure hauls (13, 16, 10, 19) at the Emirates already – Villa have conceded in five of their last six road trips and look up against it here. This was, of course, prior to Arsene Wenger’s admission that the Chilean is a hamstring doubt for the weekend and will be assessed, forcing many to reconsider their selection.

Angel Di Maria (8%) and Wayne Rooney (4%) find a place in the top four for United’s home match with Leicester. Neither player has much form to shout about – the Argentine has just two assists in his last eight league appearances, whilst Rooney has blanked in five of his last six. The latter has, however, been consistent in front of his own fans and earned points in six of his eight Old Trafford appearances.

It’s fair to say that the vast majority – if not all – of Diego Costa’s votes were prior to news over the last day or two. Charged by the FA over his stamping incident with Emre Can, he has subsequently contested the decision and it won’t be until tomorrow before we know the outcome, with a ban still looking likely. Prior to all that, he was the Chelsea player of choice as the league leaders face champions City at the Bridge – over 5% opted for the Spain international, who is in the middle of a purple patch after racking up five goals and a pair of assists in the last five. Just 2% are favouring Eden Hazard after back-to-back blanks, though 3% reckon Sergio Aguero is worthy of our consideration against a defence that’s conceded just once in their last eight at Stamford Bridge.

Palace’s Dwight Gayle is also in contention. Selected by 3%, the budget striker has 24 points in two appearances under Alan Pardew and hosts an Everton side with a single clean sheet in the last 12 outings. Tottenham’s Harry Kane is backed by a similar number ahead of a tricky trip to West Brom – having scored in five of his last six on the road, though, the youngster looks the likeliest to breach the Baggies backline. Olivier Giroud has also been backed by 3% after scoring four times in his last five – if Sanchez is indeed ruled out, his output looks key for the Gunners.

      Sanchez and Hazard

      with two of:

      Cazorla/Sterling/Oscar
      Di Maria/Silva/Fabregas
      Puncheon/Johnson/Elia/Moses

too many people defaulting in ADM because of his name and the fixtures.

      I guess?

Although, ADM is still a great footballer, yeah?
Surely, we can cut him some slack coming back from injury & give him some time to adjust to his more advanced role.

Look, it wasn't a cpl months ago he was tearing up the league.
Now, no one would argue that he was going to score 15pts every week but, I also don't feel it's reasonable to think that he'll blank every week either...
The answer is surely somewhere in between.

In the end, he's been much better at OT & as a result, if there was any time to grab him it'd be for these upcoming 5/6 weeks.

What? He's been very poor! Sure he works hard and runs himself into the ground every game I'll give him that, but his set-piece delivery and all-round game is very poor. The glaring week link in Chelsea's supposedly strongest line-up IMO.

He's never been that consistent for Fiorentina. Personally, I would have expected Schurrle to displace Willian but Mourinho loves a player who tracks back. I don't think it's that clear cut.

Me too. Would prosper under a more attack-minded manager. Hope Mourinho regrets letting him go. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Cuadrado's time at Chelsea go the same way.

Call me crazy but, I think he's being signed to help give the CM's a break...

It's well documented that Fabregas tries greatly as the season progresses & Cuadrado is an excellent defensive player who can play RW or in that ACM role.

In the end, I feel he'll be slotted in wherever Chelsea need him rather than simply taking over Willian's spot on the RW full time.

    RMWCT:

    Foster Hamer

    Hutton Gardos Terry PvA Wisdom

    Alexis Boyd Hazard Sterling AdM

    Aguero Giroud Kane

Could also upgrade Gardos to Bertrand and downgrade Sterling to Chadli.

    Thoughts?

    If i have Alexis/Fab/Hazard/AdM/Boyd currently,
    Would you advise Fab+Boyd--> Wally+Moses for a -4?

I'm keen to move on Fabregas, too. But I want to upgrade Ings at his expense.

I'd say no. Not much point upgrading Boyd, imo.

    Best option here, gents?

    Panti, Krul
    Terry, Koscielny, Clyne, Cameron, Baird
    Sanchez, Hazard, Fabregas*, ADM, Boyd
    Aguero, Ings, Kane

    1 FT
    0.0 ITB

    A) Fabregas > Sterling
    B) Fabregas + Ings > 7.2 + Giroud (C) (-4)
    C) Other

I'd keep Ings and drop Kane personally. Either way, option B looks brilliant.

Burnely's fixtures are horrible. Nailed on relegation if they're in the bottom 3 come GW25, imo.

Why Puncheon? Was thinking Moses, myself.

Tottenhams fixtures are worse than Burnleys next two, and you can ship Ings after that.
Do you really want Kane through Pulis, ARS, liv WHM, blank?

CPL are doing very well under Pardew, I got Gayle myself this week

I honestly don't see how they can ban Costa when he was mid air and wasn't looking at the player!

Oh and he's my favourite player.

Exactly and how was he supposed to know Can was kicking the ball like crazy on the ground, which he should have been booked for in the first place!

      1. Ser Football 42

Costa reches down. Can kicks ball in ground. Costa fumbles and races to try to get ball.

I see it as kinda like when you toy with a child. They don't pay attention to their footing and only look at what they are trying to get

Yup, he didn't put his full body weight on that foot either, which one would do if the aim is to hurt.

Due to another pap season and the need to try and find diffs my wildcard looks something like this:

    Forster Foster
    muniesa. clyne. Jones. Wisdom. 4.3
    Sanchez. Oscar. ADM. Walters. chadli
    sturridge. Defoe. Aguero

Does it need an overhaul or looking acceptable?
    Cheers guys
