Having delved into the new data in our members section to assess Alan Pardew’s impact on Crystal Palace, we make our way to the Midlands to see how Tony Pulis is shaping up as the new man in charge at West Brom.

With three clean sheets in five matches – compared to six in the opening 20 Gameweeks – Pulis has helped his new side register two wins and a couple of draws, with only a home loss to in-form Tottenham dashing our Fantasy faith. In terms of personnel, we’ve seen Andre Wisdom shuffled onto the Baggies bench, with Chris Brunt utilised as a left-back and record signing Brown Ideye finally finding his form. Similarly, Saido Berahino, with seven goals in eight appearances in all competitions, has been transformed in recent weeks after falling out of Alan Irvine’s first-team plans. As the Midlands side brace themselves for some kind upcoming fixtures, we cast an eye over the numbers for signs of the so-called “Pulis effect”.

At a massage parlor, it was written on a sign board 'I only massage those who do not massage themselves.'

So does the masseur massages himself?

Jonty resided in a house for three years. He had no visitors and never went out. At the end of the three years, he became slightly crazy and insane. One evening he switched off all the lights to his house, and went straight to bed. When he awoke the next morning his house was surrounded by dead bodies.

    How did this happen?

However nearby train station is quite far from his place and he used to drive his bike to train station daily with an average speed of 60km/hr. One day at halfway point he realized that due to heavy traffic he got late having average speed of just 30km/hr.How fast he must drive for the rest of the way to catch my local train ?

Marcus Aurelius Detective reviewed the information they had on the case so far.

A lady named 'Hat' was found shot and Marcus Aurelius already had a list of suspects : Diver , Torres Magic , Jonty, Messi , Ronaldo
The killer is a fan of Marcus Aurelius and challenges him by leaving notes at various places.

    # The first was found in a drawing room.
    # The second was found in an art room.
    # The third was in a bed room.
    # the fourth in an ice-cream room.
    # The fifth at the desk room

All of the notes read the same thing, 'The clues are where you find the notes.' Still , nothing was found anywhere. Marcus Aurelius pauses for a moment, and then arrests the killer. Who was the killer ?

This has no one correct answer but have a look-
Suppose you're on a game show, and you're given the choice of three doors: Behind one door is a car; behind the others, goats. You pick a door, say No. 1, and the host, who knows what's behind the doors, opens another door, say No. 3, which has a goat. He then says to you, "Do you want to pick door No. 2?" Is it to your advantage to switch your choice?

    1. Billy Gilmore
      • 13 Years

Of course it has a correct answer, you double your chances by swapping

          • 10 Years
          10 years, 10 months ago

          That's nonsense surely.

The odds are 50/50 once one has been eliminated. Swapping would be from one 50% chance to another 50% chance. There's no gain.

The fact that you started with a 33% chance before one was revealed is irrelevant. That has already happened. Your 33% chance has now increased to a 50% chance.

Therefore the answer is categorically no. You would gain no advantage by swapping.

Unless of course the game show host was selecting a goat deliberately. In which case you swap. But if the game show host's choice was random (as implied) there's no gain.

If the game hosts choice was random, then he might actually show you the car and there would be no chance to swap.

That is impossible. You apparently do not know this problem.

                  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monty_Hall_problem

Indeed, it is said above too, even if it is badly put, that "the host, who knows what is behind the doors, opens another door... which has a goat."

You don't have to assume anything about the randomness, however.

            2. Billy Gilmore
              • 13 Years
              10 years, 10 months ago

The whole 'game' is based around him showing you a goat deliberately because the host knows where the car is. There's still only a 33% chance that it's behind the door you originally chose and therefore a 67% chance it's NOT behind that door. When the host opens one of the doors with the goat then that whole 67% goes to the door you would then swap to.

          2. Camp No No
            • 12 Years
            10 years, 10 months ago

Your mistake seems to be that you suppose that the car is "returned", so to say, or that it can change place during the game. So that the initial choice of the door was irrelevant. But the name of the game is that the door that holds the car behind it is decided before you make the first pick, and it will not be changed after your pick, nor after the host shows you one door behind which it is not. The chance that it is behind the other two is 2/3, and remains the same after your pick, and after the host has opened one door. The host just tells you which one it is, if it is one of those 2. So, you double your chances if you swap.

Your difficulty to understand this may be helped intuitively. Think you had 100 doors and car behind just one. Now, when you choose one, the chance that you got the one where the car is, is 1/100. the chance that it is behind another door is 99/100. Then the host opens you 98 doors, behind which the car is not. The car does not change place at any moment. Do you not think that you'd improve your chances to get the car by swapping?

              • 10 Years
              10 years, 10 months ago

I have made no mistake. You are making the assumption that the game show host's choice isn't random. I am making the assumption that it is as there is nothing in the original question to indicate otherwise.

You have. It doesn't matter if the host's choice is random or not, if he opens a door with a goat behind it the same principles apply. Google the Monty Hall Paradox.

Exactly. The mistake that Ruth makes is that he counts the probability according to a system where the host "reshuffles the pack", or rearranges the setting during the game.

As long as the car does not change place during the course of the game, the 2/3 chance that the car is behind one of the other two doors is upheld. So, if the host does not show a car, then by swapping you have 2/3 chance to get the car. If he shows the car (if it was random), then you just lost. If you don't swap, you retain the 1/3 chance to get the car.

Like this quote about the problem- "... no other statistical puzzle comes so close to fooling all the people all the time" and "that even Nobel physicists systematically give the wrong answer, and that they insist on it, and they are ready to berate in print those who propose the right answer". Pigeons repeatedly exposed to the problem show that they rapidly learn always to switch, unlike humans.

    Any fellow Chess geeks here?
Consider a 5×5 chess board. Is it possible to place five queens on the board such that three pawns can safely be placed on the board? In other words, by carefully choosing where to place the five queens, can you arrange it so that there are three squares on the board that none of the queens can attack?

During an offering at a church service James received the offering basket and dropped five pounds. The person behind tapped him and gave him 100 dollars. He smiled @ his generosity and dropped into the basket before passing it. The man told him that he had dropped the cash. James who only had 105 pounds, fare included, collapsed.
He heard that the money would complete the balance to buy a limousine to carry worshippers to their homes then rose up.
Again he heard that that the limousine was bought to carry members of the congregation privately with women and men alternating for every Sunday. That Sunday was for women. However his wife was the only woman in attendance. He collapsed again.

See the suspension tightrope on the right here Prateik7M. 10 yellows now which will give a two game ban.

Any chance of Wisdom or Baird getting a start or should I ditch one of them for Dawson?

I'd ditch them, or wait a week if you have a decent alternative this week.

I have Terry, Hutton and Gardos. The first two are fine but is Gardos looking likely to start?

Who is the best mid option 6.5 or less?

Already have Mane and I need to ditch Chadli. I'm thinking Siggie or Downing but leaning towards Siggie?

Downing has good fixture for next 2. Sigurdsson's fixtures arent that great. Both are good pick but if I have to choose 1, it will be Downing.

I like Palace at home for Downing next week but is Spurs away a good fixture? I can keep Chadli on the bench this week and then get rid next week when he has a blank. Siggie is quite reliable home and away and against any opposition so I'm leaning towards him. I'll see how he does this week before deciding.
