Scout Scribbles – Gunners Shocked at the Emirates

Arsenal slump to a surprise 3-1 home loss to Monaco, with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain emerging from the bench to grab his side’s consolation. The worries build for Palace up front, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson miss Liverpool’s clash with Besiktas, whilst Billy Jones could return for Sunderland this weekend.

Wenger Unhappy with Defence

Arsene Wenger made just two changes for his starting XI for last night’s clash with Monaco, bringing in Hector Bellerin and Kieran Gibbs for Calum Chambers and Nacho Monreal in the full-back areas. The Gunners boss once again preferred Danny Welbeck to Theo Walcott on the right, whilst Olivier Giroud led the line before being hauled off on 60 minutes after an ineffectual display.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s strike off the bench wasn’t enough to prevent Arsenal’s run of nine straight home wins coming to an end and, after the match, his manager was far from happy with the display at both ends of the pitch:

“We missed chances and were a bit suicidal defensively. We were unlucky because the first goal was deflected, but the second and third goals were suicidal. It looks like we have lost our nerve and our rationality on the pitch. The heart took over the head, and at this level that doesn’t work.”

Wenger also commented on Giroud’s performance, saying that the Gunners’ forward spurned some clear-cut opportunites:

“I felt he had an off night tonight. He missed easy chances and it looked like it was not one of his best days.”

The Scout Says: Wenger’s damning assessment of Arsenal’s performance at the Emirates perhaps strengthens the idea that he’ll freshen things up for Sunday’s home clash against Everton. Bellerin’s shaky display may well allow Chambers a way back, whilst Monreal – having started each of the last six league matches – is likely to edge Gibbs back onto the bench. With regards to Arsenal’s attacking players, Walcott was handed 30 minutes after replacing Welbeck on the right flank and may well be in line for a start against the Toffees as Wenger alternates the pair, though Oxlade-Chamberlain’s strike also brings him into contention either in the middle or out wide. After a run of fine performances, Giroud did himself no favours on the night, failing to hit the target with any of his six attempts at goal. Nevertheless, the 28-year-old striker’s run of three goals and two assists in his last five league appearances should hold him in good stead going into Sunday’s match-up.

Worries up front for Palace

Crystal Palace face fresh injury concerns, with growing fears that Fraizer Campbell could be out for around a month with a hamstring strain. Meanwhile, Marouane Chamakh, who’s suffering from the same complaint, is not expected to recover in time for the Eagles’ match against West Ham United. On a positive note, club captain Mile Jedinak is now fully fit and midfielder James McArthur is in line for a start at Upton Park.

The Scout Says: Injuries elsewhere in Palace’s front line could see their joint-top league scorer, Dwight Gayle, spearheading the attack in Saturday’s early kick-off. The 24-year-old striker has been stationed out on the left wing for recent ties against Arsenal and Liverpool, and looks likely to be given the nod ahead of Glenn Murray – considering the seasoned frontman has only recorded one start this campaign. Gayle’s deployment in a more advanced role may lead to the reinstatement of Yannick Bolasie on the left flank, with the DR Congo international yet to be handed a start by boss Alan Pardew since his return from the African Cup of Nations. In midfield, the return of Jedinak and McArthur affords the Eagles boss a real dilemma after he fielded a 4-1-4-1 last week, with Jordan Mutch and Jason Puncheon in the advanced central positions.

Henderson doubtful for City clash

Liverpool midfield stalwart Jordan Henderson and playmaker Philippe Coutinho did not travel to Turkey in preparation for the Reds’ Europa League encounter with Besiktas. The former is carrying a minor ankle complaint, while the latter is being rested by manager Brendan Rodgers. Mamadou Sakho remains sidelined with a hip injury that forced him to sit out the Southampton clash.

Speaking to the press yesterday, Rodgers explained the reasoning behind Coutinho’s absence:

“I’ve had to leave out young Coutinho. He hasn’t travelled with us. He’s an outstanding young player for us, a key player and he’s played a lot of games consecutively for us. This was a game that I’d earmarked to give him some recovery in knowing he can stay at home, not travel and prepare and get ready for the weekend.”

The Scout Says: Coutinho has started Liverpool’s last 19 matches in all competitions, so his omission from Liverpool’s midweek tie in Turkey should perhaps come as no surprise. The Brazilian midfielder has been in fine form of late, notching five assists in his previous nine league outings, and will be pivotal to Rodgers’ plan of attack against Manchester City. Doubts over Henderson’s fitness, however, are a real concern – compounded by the absence of Lucas Leiva and Steven Gerrard. The midfield general has started all but two of the Reds’ Premier League fixtures this term, with his industry in the centre of the park a key contributing factor to Liverpool’s five clean sheets in their last six outings.

Sunderland hopeful on Jones return

Sunderland trio Billy Jones, Jack Rodwell and Will Buckley could be available for selection against Manchester United. Manager Gus Poyet confirmed that Jones’ potential return on the weekend will go right down to the wire.

“Billy Jones will be touch and go so I don’t know if he is going to be available. We’re trying our best and he is much better but we have to take the decision on a daily basis.”

The Scout Says: As we saw last week after Patrick van Aanholt dropped to the bench, Gus Poyet seems undecided on his favoured back-four. The Black Cats boss opted for Santiago Vergini at right-back, allowing Anthony Reveillere to move to the left and displace the Dutchman, suggesting his pitch time is no longer guaranteed. It remains to be seen whether Jones’ availability will have any further impact – the former West Brom man has played just six league matches since arriving on Wearside this season and it may well be that the versatile Reveillere is the safest way forward for those looking to invest in the Sunderland defence – his average of 4.5 points per appearance is 1.4 greater than any other defensive team-mate ahead of clashes with Hull, Villa, Newcastle and Palace in the next six.

      Gone for Silva, 9m is too much to risk for a player not guaranteed a start and in danger of returning you a single pt when he comes on for a cameo. Yes we all know of what he's capable of, and probably the top 3 fantasy players when on form but at this stage of the season it's too much of a gamble to carry.

    Can see Spurs losing 1-0 at half time tonight. Kane will then come on for the 2nd half, scoring a late equaliser. The game will then go into extra time where Soldado will score the winner in the 119th minute. Kane will then start the final on Sunday looking to be the man to end Spurs' trophy drought. He will score an early goal against Chelsea and with victory looking likely, Chelsea will rally back and score in 83rd minute via a textbook Ivanovic header. The game will then see a fiercely contested extra time battle ensue but unfortunately for poor Harry Kane, the dreaded penalty shoot out is inevitable. Chelsea will then win 13-12 on pens with Kane missing his spot kick. A dejected and exhausted Kane will leave Pochettino with no choice but to rest him against Swansea. He will then come on with the score at 0-0, pick up a knock and miss the qpr game. The only obvious decision to make is to drop Kane asap and captain......Wilfred Bony

                It all depends what Spurs priority is?

                If they want to challenge for top 4 they will need to put a full strength team out

                  I reckon, they'll try and manage with less than full strength tonight. Bench Eriksen and Kane and bring them on if needed, then go full strength vs Chelsea and bench again vs Swansea.

                  Might as well bench until needed. Which is what concerns me, they may not be needed vs Swansea.

        you have only two players who dont play next gw, thats a good thing. start
        jones, dawson, wolesch, bellering,
        adm sanch x x
        giroud aguero

        Spend ur two transfers on two midfielders, moses looks to be on form, and he is cheap, and take a punt on scott sinclair, who scored last GW, and i bet will score more in the coming gameweeks. get ahead of the curve.

      I would say he'll play - not start, though. As many say, Sunderland kept a CS without him - but once that CS has gone, he'll get his chance to come on. If by some miracle they are going in to the last few minutes unscathed he's a prime candidate to come on late as a timewasting sub.

          I'd go along with this. Even if he plays 90 (unlikely) I'd expect Man Utd to score twice, so there's a good chance it's still a -3.

    Need some second thoughts here 🙂

    Panti
    Clyne - Kosc - PVA - Wisdom
    Di maria - Puncheon - Moses - Sanchez
    Aguero - Defoe

    Bench: Terry - Hazard - Kane

    FT:1
    MITB: 1.2m

    What to do?
    A) Save transfer this gw, and then get some spurs (austin) before the double.
    B) Upgrade Wisdom to a nailed defender
    C) Pucheon -> Mane

    The problem with B is that it might just end up with a single point anyway
    If i do c i'll have to take a hit to get 2 players with double gw in.

    Not a good night for my fantasy team, Arsenal. Have to take the armband off Giroud now, and fingers crossed that he and Bellerin start... Obviously Giroud was the focal point he has been of late, six shots in the box tells as much, but he just couldn't finish!

    Want to discuss Cazorla a little. I've got him in my team and I'm wondering if I should be looking to shift him out in the near future. I haven't been following Arsenal that closely off late.

    Couple of questions.

    A) Has he been playing deeper than usual and will he continue to do so?
    B) If I'm looking to get Eriksen in for the DGW, should I get rid of Cazorla or Sterling?

      He is looking like the old Ramsey.
      Good runs in (but with ball and in combinations, specially with Ozil).
      He has penos and all free kicks.
      Only Sanchez and Ozil take the corners.

      If i had him, i would hold.

              Ozil is starting every game for a while…7 in a row (i think).
              Yesterday he was playing awfully… i think he needs a rest (this one or vs QPR).

              We know Wenger.
              After a poor result he always takes a more conservative approach.

                Ozil wasn't drastically worse than anyone else last night...

                Ran further than anyone else, 85% pass completion, 27/34 passes in the final 3rd.

                He's also been one of our better players since he came back from injury.

        Apparently they had only conceded 2 goals in 13 games

        I expected a tight match with Arsenal winning 1-0 that would've forced Monaco to open up in the 2nd leg but Wenger got his tactics all wrong being trying to win it in the 1st leg.

    Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Cheap defensive replacements

    Who are your defensive deadwood players and who do you plan to replace them with?

    Anyone fancy upgrading the likes of Wisdom to say Bertrand?

    Or are budget options only under consideration?

        Wisdom and Cameron for me. Tempted to keep Cameron as he'll most likely get a point and may even start given Stoke's injuries. Wisdom is the real issue though.

      I went with PVA and Baird in my WC. I thought it was only Baird who could be an issue, so replaced him with Bruce as my ultra-cheap fifth option last week. I'm looking at now doing PVA to Dawson to reinstate some WBA coverage for a decent price. I also need to get a Saints defender in as Coloccini's good run is about to come to an end.

      Not nice to have to commit so many transfers to the defence, but with a lot of forwards picking themselves it's OK to tweak little bits here and there sometimes.

    Foster

    PVA - Clyne - Baird - Hutton

    Sanchez - Mane - Cazola - (Albrighton)

    Aguero - Giroud

    (Terry) (Hazard) (Kane)

    2 FT and 1.8 in the bank

    Albrighton -> Moses

    And

    A) Baird -> C Dawson

    B) Baird -> Wolly

    C) Baird -> Alderweireld

    D) Baird -> Naughton

    Moses seems a no brainer and I'm leaning towards C if he's fit.

            Jack's been out for 3 months, and Flamini is abysmal...

    Bellerin doubt is all we need with this gameweek coming up... 'head in hands'

      He's less doubtful than last week, he looked fit at least

      Hopefully he starts. I can't see why Wenger still uses Chambers at CB.

    Any reason not to go ahead with my plan of:

    2 FTs this week - Walcott and Wisdom to Silva and Dawson
    For a hit next week - ADM and Defoe to Eriksen and Aussin

      I'd keep theo this week, he is a great punt and pretty sure he will start

        I keep thinking he'll start and he keeps disappointing. Thinking he'll start just because he didn't last night?

        I fancy ditching both Walcott and ADM soon, ADM's fixtures turn after this week, and Silva's are great/Eriksen obviously has the DGW.

          Get Dawson this GW and give a last chance to theo.

          Then u can get rid of both adm and theo next week for free

            Cheers for your responses, I may give him one last chance.

          Lose him for Eriksen next week. He could easily start against Everton and it's not like a Silva haul is likely at Anfield.

            You mean like last season where he got a goal and assist there

      I'd leave defoe to Austin personally, would keep theo too but can see why you don't want to

      This week Wisdom to Dawson
      Next week Adm and Defoe to Eriksen and Austin for free

        You'd keep Walcott past this week? He's not even first choice.

      Thanks all, may give Walcott one last chance. After pulling out of Walcott to Silva last GW, I am wary of getting burnt, but it's probably worth one last effort with Theo.

    I want to save my FT in order to get in Rose/Vert and Eriksen for free next gw? Is it wise when I have Pva, Walcott and Oscar?

    Krul
    Koscielny, Fonte, Wollscheid, Pva*
    Sanchez, Mane, Walcott*' Cork
    Falcao, Aguero

    Foster, Terry, Oscar*, Kane

      Long as Haidara starts this week I don't care he can rot on bench

    Bruce Clyne PVA Pieters
    Cazorla Silva Di Maria Boyd
    Aguero Giroud
