Liverpool have confirmed that Martin Skrtel has damaged his posterior cruciate ligament in the game at City on Sunday.
Skrtel was left in a crumpled heap on the edge of his own area after chasing back a City through ball. According to a club spokesman, he is due to receive a prognosis on the injury early this week:
“He will see a specialist tomorrow to assess the extent of the injury and will then have an accurate idea of the timescales involved before he is back playing again.”
We can take it as read however, that Liverpool will be without Skrtel for at least a good few months and that should open the door for Dan Agger.
Agger has been on the bench for the last few games having recovered from a metatarsal injury. He has made one start for Liverpool in the Carling Cup, scoring a cracking free kick. He will surely now be given his chance for a run of games alongside Carragher which will certainly see some interest from fantasy managers.
Following last season’s injury-hit season, Agger is fairly reasonably priced and is currently coming in at 5.9 in the Fantasy Premier League game which would make him the cheapest available Liverpool defender along with Aurellio. Once established, Agger should be assured of starts, although Hyypia does present Rafa an option. He may also be an option that Rafa takes for the forthcoming game with Wigan, considering that the Liverpool backline will face the muscle of Heskey.
While it’s tempting to dive in then, it might be worth waiting for the Wigan game to see how Rafa approaches it. If Agger starts that one then he should offer value for a good few months.
