I’m hitting you with a different kind of preamble this week. While my “middle of nowhere” hotel fails to afford me the opportunity to plunder a selection of morning papers, it has allowed me hours of contemplation while I wait for the bride and groom to do their thing. Not that thing. The outdated ceremony thing.

In my own celebration this morning; that of celebrating a temporary internet connection via a hotel IT system dating back to 1987, I’ve gone crazy with my fantasy team. Resigned to a season of mid-table obscurity and with Granville still a fairly safe distance away, I decided to smash the tedium of seeing out the season and go for broke with some transfers…

Yeah I’ve made five in all (no doubt Granville is now busily trying to work out how he can make excessive transfers of his own), a decision fuelled by the fact that this season is more or less over for me. I’m about to clock up my worst ever finish in the Fantasy Premier League and I can’t really figure out why.

I’ve suffered few disastrous weeks but then I haven’t enjoyed any incredible points hauls either. It’s been a “meh” season. A shoulder shrug affair, scattered with the odd above average week, but one spent tirelessly chasing a mini-league leader, without really making an impression on the gap.

Ironically since I switched my tactics to a more conservative approach and sought out the key targets – Fabregas, Rooney, Drogba – I’ve slowly whittled back the lead. Without differentials though, that gap will never be closed and the season will just close with a whimper. So today I just decided to have some fun and throw caution to the wind with some wholesale changes.

Some of you will still be chasing gaps with the hope of closing them. Others will have cup scores to concern them or head-to-head leagues as distractions (I’ve never really cared about those this term). For me though, I’m just going to play out the last remaining gameweeks for fun – follow some hunches and see where it takes me. When the competitive edge of fantasy football is blunt, I think I owe to myself to at least get some kicks from a hobby that proves such a distraction.

Have a good gameweek folks.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.
