Chris Hughton has “parted company” with Newcastle United this afternoon with the club announcing that the board “now feels that an individual with more managerial experience is needed to take the club forward.”

Hughton’s departure follows an appalling run of form, covered in depth on these pages over the last 24 hours, that culminated in Sunday’s 3-1 defeat at West Brom, a display which ultimately proved the final straw for Newcastle’s board.

Inevitably Martin O’Neil’s name has been put forward as a potential replacement although the club have however stated that the search is yet to begin…

“The task of appointing a new manager now begins. An announcement will be made shortly regarding transitional arrangements pending the appointment of a successor.”

In Fantasy terms the impact is likely to be restricted to the effects on striker Andy Carroll who is owned by over 50% of Fantasy Premier League Managers. Carroll’s form has been maintained throughout Newcastle’s poor run of results and if the new manager can successfully find him a strike partner, that should be beneficial from a Fantasy perspective. A switch to 4-4-2 and a change of system may well reduce Kevin Nolan’s potential however.

Depending on the successful candidate, things may also improve defensively and, with starting roles in the central area up for grabs, a new broom could bring changes in with Sol Campbell, Steven Taylor, Fabio Coloccini and Mike Williamson all vying for two positions.

It’s all pure speculation right now of course, but a change, whether you agree with the decision to sack Hughton or not, should alter the tactics and shape in place in the Newcastle ranks, reseting the potential of some mid-price Fantasy assets along the way.

In the short-term, it will be interesting to assess the reaction of players and fans to the decision when Liverpool arrive at St James’ Park this weekend.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Just playing around with my team, and if i plan my transfers right, this team is possible soon:

    Foster Robinson
    Kolarov Konchesky Bardsley 5.5? Simpson
    Nani Lampard Nasri Adam N'Zog
    Odemwingie Tevez Torres.

Ill probably just wait till the wilcard though.

(If you have already read this post please ignore. Sorry. I find that when you're the last comment on a page you get zero replies so I'm reposting)

Anyone else looking ahead to next weekend and feeling a little antsy with Tevez and Kolarov already write-offs?

I hate only having one viable sub on the bench. Considering it is only one game and City’s subsequent games remain lucrative thereafter, it seems a policy of patience is required. Fair enough in Tevez’ case but is Kolarov really worthy of this kind of treatment?

My team looks very Away orientated next weekend which I don’t like. The idea of replacing Kolarov with a home defender with decent enough fixtures becomes more tempting by the hour for me. Obviously I’ll be waiting to see if any other problems pop up before the end of the week, but just a thought.

I would stick with Kolarov for now unless weather looks like screwing anything up later in the week.

Been out all day and just seen the Newcastle news. I don't know a lot about Hughton but he came across as tactically switched on and a decent bloke. Whether that's good enough to be a successful Prem manager is another topic for debate but I'll bet my first borns soul on the fact that if Holloway and Di Matteo go down this year, they'll be managing their teams next year. And getting every support from their respective boards to get their teams back into the Prem.

I appreciate that Ashely is a hard-nosed, successful businessman who expects instant results in his other enterprises but has he once again misjudged the role the Chairman plays in a football club and misjudged the subsequent fans reaction?

Anyway, a Chelski in peace and all the best for the rest of the season. You're too good to go down. 😉
