Kenny Dalglish made an unremarkable return to European football with Liverpool and he masterminded his troops to a 0-0 stalemate in Prague. The draw with Sparta has Liverpool well placed for a last 16 Europa League place, while Dalglish had the opportunity to take a passing glance at some fringe players – including Joe Cole.

Liverpool’s lineup saw the likes of Sotorious Kyrgiakos partner Jame Carragher in defence, while 19-year-old Danny Wilson was deployed at left-back in a 4-4-2, allowing Glen Johnson to revert to the right full-back role. David Ngog took the striker’s role with Raul Meireles again given the job of providing the support, as he looked to prolong his extraordinary scoring streak.

Dalglish was without groin injury victim Steven Gerrard and he took another casualty in midfield on the night as Fabio Aurelio suffered his own groin injury. Dalglish had this to say on the Aurelio setback…

“It’s an adductor strain. It’s not too bad. Midfield was the last place we needed an injury. Obviously Fabio would prefer to play somewhere else than midfield but needs must.”

Aurelio’s injury saw him replaced by Joe Cole on 38 minutes. That shackled Meireles in a deeper midfield role as Cole was pushed up as support for Ngog.

This was Joe Cole’s first appearance under Dalglish following recurring knee problems for the former Chelsea trickster. Cole has been a non-starter for Liverpool since his arrival at Anfield and in Fantasy terms his inability to maintain fitness and cement a starting role has been a major disappointment. The subject cropped up in Dalglish’s post-match interview, and just as he has done with new-signing Andy Carroll, the Liverpool boss stressed the need for patience with Cole.

“Joe’s a valuable asset for us but obviously he’s not going to pick up his form immediately. We’re not going to expect him to be the Joe Cole who came here in the summer straight away…Form’s temporary and class is permanent: that’s where we stand with Joe Cole. We’ll give him a bit of time to get himself up to speed and then we can see him produce something for us.”

The second-leg with Sparta falls before the Gameweek 28 trip to Upton Park. Steven Gerrard and Dan Agger remain injury doubts for that, although Dalglish offered us plenty of reassurance on their situation – indicating that they will be back in the frame…

“We’ll see when we go back. I don’t think he’ll be too long before he’s fit and I don’t think Daniel Agger will be too much of a problem either.â€

Martin Kelly and Martin Skrtel were also rested last night; both look likely to be back in the equation but it will be interesting to see if Dalglish keeps them preserved for the West Ham trip. Fantasy Managers will certainly be hoping that this is the case.

“We left Martin Kelly and Martin Skrtel out as well because young Martin Kelly has been through an awful lot in the last seven games and has been playing with a few bumps and bruises. This gave him the opportunity to refresh himself, and Martin Skrtel got injured at Chelsea but carried on – and we didn’t want to take a chance.”

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Isn't it funny that there was a time when the smart money was on Arteta, and loads of people had him, and now he's fallen so far. What makes you think he may be coming back?

Nothing so far, he did play fairly far forward for the odd bit in their last game, I'm just thinking of him as a slight diff. Though I'll probably go with Cahill.

The differential angle's certainly a thought, with every bugger getting Cahill for the double and if Saha is out. Would be nice to have both in midfield. Personally I've got enough problems getting Cahill in though!

Yep. Have to drop one or two people to field a decent team this so makes most sense. But losing him breaks the spell and not sure he'll make it back. Keep going over and over the possibilities.

Righto cricketeers, if you want to get into the FFScout cricket league please join up as soon as possible. The deadline is at 8.30am tomorrow and I'm off out to see my mates band in Dublin tonight.
Unlike the FPL leagues I have to manually accept every entrant into the league so the sooner you send the team in the better. The details are:

    It’s free to enter at

    In purely FPL terms:

    Fabregas
    06/07 - 2 goals and 14 assists (182pts)
    07/08 - 7 goals and 20 assists (205pts)
    08/09 - 3 goals and 10 assists (108pts)
    09/10 - 15 goals and 15 assists (214pts)
    10/11 - 3 goals and 10 assists (105pts)
TOTAL = 30 GOALS and 69 ASSISTS (814pts of which 182 are BPs)

    Rooney
    06/07 - 14 goals and 12 assists (184pts)
    07/08 - 12 goals and 13 assists (148pts)
    08/09 - 12 goals and 7 assists (135pts)
    09/10 - 26 goals and 6 assists (224pts)
    10/11 - 5 goals and 10 assists (87pts)
TOTAL = 69 GOALS and 48 ASSISTS (778pts, of which 127 are BPs)

    In the last 5 years:
    - Fabregas has made 99 goal resulting contributions. Rooney has made 117 goal resulting contributions.
    - Ignoring BPS their totals are Fabregas 632pts v Rooney 651pts.
    - Fabregas has done this in 11,607 mins of football. Rooney has done this in 11,403 mins of football.

Cor their records aren't half close or bad for that matter. If they do play the same position though you'd have to say Rooney is better at it 😀

    Cue further arguments.

        here's my one:

        agger 06/07 mins 2168, goals conceeded 11
vidic currently 2313, goals conceeded 24.

Look at the stats/chalkboards/heat maps etc Attila. It's clear that Rooney is outperforming his namesake! 🙂

Further to IT's stats, I'd have lost money on Fabregas playing more minutes than Rooney in the past five seasons.

P.S. Like your team, but leaving Watson out is big-balls stuff.

Tried entering, but my machine crashed. I'll do it later.

India to win, so a couple of their stars + Watson and the world's greatest cricketer, Kallis. Maybe Vettori. Fill the rest with my eyes closed. Job done.

Jebus Irish ticket prices are a joke. When United came over for a pre-season friendly against a relatively poor team, tickets were €95, In an average stadium with no real atmosphere

The Ferry, a bus to and from the game and a match ticket costs €80 for tomorrow's game, a strong enough side against a relatively poor team in a quality stadium with a good atmosphere.

    Stupid if you ask me
