Over 460 Fantasy Managers put their name in the hat for the Members’ Paddy Power Cup and now, eight rounds later, we are down to our final two. Before previewing the Grand Final, let’s take a look at how both finalists negotiated their way through the Semis…

Zophar 61 – 75 Kippax Kloggers

Roostars 66 – 71 The Hunt

In our first Semi-Final, big favourite Zophar suffered a hefty 14-point defeat at the hands of Kippax Kloggers. In a very similar fashion to his Quarter-Final dismissal of Cup legend Gooner dave, Kippax Kloggers’ win came courtesy of a strong defensive showing. With most of the outfield ‘cancelled out’, it was left to a double of Everton clean sheets and a bargain Manchester United one to ultimately prove the difference between the two sides. If Zophar -currently ranked 14th in the world in Fantasy Premier League (FPL)- can recover from this trauma, then he could possibly go win the whole thing, and we certainly wish him the best of luck in doing so.

The second Semi was a much tighter affair, with the key differentials being David Luiz in a 4-5-1 for Roostars, to Peter Odemwingie in a 3-4-3 for The Hunt. Roostars is also left bemoaning his failed four-point hit; removing Rafael van der Vaart and the suspended Wayne Rooney wasn’t costly, but replacing the pair with Frank Lampard and Javier Hernandez hardly turned out to be a fruitful move.

So, to the Final…

Kippax Kloggers Vs. The Hunt

Ranked 2,772nd in the world, Kippax Kloggers takes an early lead (effectively half a point) against 9,996th overall The Hunt. As it stands, he also goes into the double Gameweek an Arsenal player up (Samir Nasri) which could prove vital should The Hunt not level that particular balance. An interesting potential differential is Kippax Kloggers’ Fernando Torres to The Hunt’s David Luiz. Having said that I imagine Luiz will, like with many others, be high on Kippax Kloggers’ wish list.

The winner, of course, grabs all the glory which comes with a fantastic prize of £75 worth of free bets, as the runner-up takes the very healthy consolation of £100 worth of free bets.

Don’t forget that it’s also Zophar Vs. Roostars for third place, with the victor pocketing a cool £50 worth of free bets.

I’ll bring results of both matches next week when we crown the first ever winner of the Members-only Paddy Power Cup.

If you’re not with Paddy Power yet, then you can sign up via this site and get a free £20 when you register and bet £10. (All offers are only available to those aged 18 and over and are subject to Paddy Power’s terms and conditions.)

Feck that, I've got to get off the cigs first. Besides fructose is in EVERYTHING pretty much, almost impossible to avoid really.

If you dont eat processed foods you wont be eating fructose infused foods.

And whats left is fruits which have fiber which as i said cut back of some of its negative effects. It all depends on what you want to do. If you want to lose fat then cut carbs alot . Allow some amount of its health benefits you want.

In 30 years things will be alot different

No not at all. Majority of those are charlatans with little understanding of metabolism or implying the research. But there a few good ones.

Im a grad student, degree in exercise science soon to be doing Masters in Nutriton and disease prevention. Done some small work in dietetics and community health also in between.

Id give it up more than a month. And by sugar that means carbohydrates , potatoes, breads, rices, sweets, orange juices , sweet juices etc.

I wouldnt go cold turkey straight away if you wanted to try it. Cut the main ones but if you want say bread eat fibre dense bread for a while or fibre infused brown rice.

You will lose alot of fat by simply cutting carbs but do some resistance weights with it aswell if you really want to lose weight and gain muscle or not lose muscle. But alot of the research shows your muscle will be fine simply cos you increase protein.

My only want is that green grass, that lovely green grass, and you want to take it away from me, and in the sight of God I can't let you do that!

Feck that. I eat well, I have a decent varied diet, and although I do have unhealthy likings for crisps, the odd beer and worst of all - cigarettes, I have a BMI of 25 and am healthy despite lack of exercise the last few months. I will get back to exercise and am planning on giving up the cigs in the very near future.

Why? The bad joke (getting it in first), or the sentiment? Some health problems such as obesity and diabetes have genetic links? Luckily my family doesn't have any of that.

Obesity isnt genetic in total. Its a small part . Analogy of one single branch on a tree.

Its all about behavioral choices, crucially dietary intake choice. Diabetes type 1 is genetic but this is very different to type 2 which is associated with obesity and not genetic.

There is alot of mis information in the public thats its just genes. They play a small and sometimes very very small part in the overall scheme of things. Certainly can be over come (when speaking about obesity)

Oh I know its not a complete genetic disease, but there are genetic predilections though to becoming obese. That isn't to say that someone with no genetic obesity cannot become obese because they can through poor lifestyle.

Yes there are those predisposed to being over weight.

But you cant get overweight unless you eat carbs. So the genetic predisposition is nothing without the actual behaviour

A varied diet is very vague. This is a healty diet needs the following
              No refined products
              High oily fishes
Good fats from nuts, meats, olive oils
Lots of vegetables & lots of fruits
Good lean proteins such as chickens and other meats
              Lots of water

Alcholol is good for health in moderation. 1 glass per day.

Exercise is good for bone health , improving length of life, fighting cancer and health disease, but not great for weight loss.

Not excessive intake no. The general advice for professional athletes and any trying to live healthy diet is when eating the carbs exercise around that time or before. Then the carbs will be burned as fuel.

Excessive amounts of sugars wont be burned off by exercise no. Exercise wouldnt have enough of effect to account for the Carbohydrate rich meals eaten in modern society - unless you kill yourself doing hours and hours and hours.

Ninety minutes later, Torres comes back and says, "I can't find it."

Cut your carbs. Eat more protein and when you eat carbs exercise .
Lift weights. Eat Carb and protein mix before and after your weight lifting. Do weight lifting which targets large musculature it presses, dead lifts , squats when you are able.

The protein and resistance exercise will build muscle mass. Carbs are only needed in high intensity exercise so eat what little you need pre and post gym.

Then reduce carbs rest of the day which will help burn fat making you leaner. The exercise in conjunction with growing muscle building will also boost your metabolism so the benefits will go on and on. Also vary intensity between high and low exercise types . This has been shown to burn more fat.

    eh...db, from earlier

Id give it up more than a month. And by sugar that means carbohydrates , potatoes, breads, rices, sweets, orange juices , sweet juices etc.

sorry DB, so what goes in place of spuds and breads and rices?

and i think youre succumbing to the overreliance on fibre. There's recent research showing fibres been shown to be jsut as much of a hard sell by cereal manufacturers as sugar. and you said that sugar has been forced on us etc. by governemnt etc.

    can you explain this ?

Regarding what goes in place of carbs , anything that isnt a carb basically and that isnt junk filled sugar filled refined foods.

There is more benefits than improving health, If you eat more proteins, less carbs you will actually get hungrier later and wont have food cravings as much. Carbs both cause cravings and cause feelings of hunger even when full. Its a double edge sword before you consider the health benefits.
Regards say replacing them go for vegetables instead and increase protein intake meats, chickens fishes etc. There are also lots of dishes where cauliflower and others can be cooked similar to that of potatoes and mashed up,As i said do it gradually. Dont go cold turkey straight away. High fibre foods are good for you as they slow the sugar intake and thus insulin in your body. Also improve a host of others things.

The high carb diet is being pushed due to many reasons. I suggest you look into gary taubes or robert lustig, fat head documentaty regarding policy change and how now the research which its based on is wrong but still being used.

By promoting high CHO then a large part of the economy is being promoted - cereal production. The fibre being pushed is more an acceptance of its abilty (high carb) to do damage and to help in a small way the side affects of what they are promoting they promote fibre. Its all politics.

Lots of researchers independent from government sum it up pretty well " the food pyramid is nothing to do with health promotion - its to ensure the american economy"

ok, alwasy completely agreed on the food pyramid being a f**king joke, conceptualised by american food manufacturers.

But im not so sure on the carbs man.

Granted, too much are bad, but the fact is i have a high metabolism, and i dont like eating alot of red meat. i fail to see how moderate carbohydrate intake along with a decent exercise program, supplemented with protein, fruit and veg can be bad.

If i didnt have carbs, my system would fail, honestly...I dont eat much bread anymore, 2 small loaves a week, and i eat chips oven fried 2/3 times a week. If i go for a run, and i havent had a decent dinner the night before, i do be absolutely shagged half way through.

anyway, not eating potatoes, (a good source of fibre, and vitamin C), in moderation seems bizarre considering they come from the ground, and are there for us to eat..

Put simply, i think with the no carb stuff, youre missing the point. Carbs are supposed to be eaten by mankind, and along with what we're supposed to be doing (using our bodies everyday, hunting down prey, climbing trees etc.) theyre a perfectly acceptable and healthy thing to eat...as far as im concerned,. and ive always studied this shit myself.

its when people are on their arse 95% of their week that the problems arise.

Its very hard to get into in short here. I would advise you to watch the numerous short interviews with Gary Taubes - he justs talks science. And also Robert Lustig.

It may surprise you to hear but if you dont eat CHO you cant gain weight. Its all in the science.

I was very much like yourself and many in ireland cho based. Regarding what humans are naturally evolved to eat potatoes are not one. If you want to eat potatoes you can - sweet potatoes are an excellent lower cho source. 10,000 with the process of cereal and plant prodution our diets changed alot. Look into the research on low carbs high fats . It will mess with everything you were told.

regarding the last 95% comment you would think it makes sense but you can become obese when undereating. Many documented cases of this. Just follow the names and look into the science. its all on You tube.

right im gonna watch this taubes guy.

so in short, heres a typical days eating for me right, bear with me here.

bowl cereal (cornflakes/ricekrispies, porridge), slice of soda bread, cup of coffee , large tin salmon w chives (or sausage sambo), 2 slices soda bread, homemade curry/chilli con carne, plate of oven chips, orange juice, half carton goats milk, the odd raw egg, raw carrot.supplemented with amino acids, udos omega threes, and multivitamins, and a few other odds and ends like zinc of the athletes foot is kicking up a bit, or ginseng if im planning on a prettly long boning session 🙂

SO, that bread and cereal taken out, with make the salmon eating mush, the sausages pretty unfilling, the milk...well, just milk, the curry, again mush without the chips..

see what im getting at here? yes the health benefits are possibly amazing, but once exercising, id rather enjoy my food with that SMALL amount of carbs, have a decent exercise regimen, and try not to drink alot and avoid sugar.

Do you get what im saying anyway? without those carbs pretty much all of our food becomes pretty unappetising, and its one of the few enjoyable things in life.

I think id much rather enjoy my food than live an extra year or two in the grand scheme of things, rather than eat mush/chicken/steak/leaves and live an extra two years.
