A solitary game tonight for the Dugout Discussion as the last fixture of the [regular] gameweek keeps our cockles occupied this evening. “King” Kenny Dalglish has brought his Liverpool side on a jaunt down to London and seems to have left Andy Carroll in Toddington services – the gargantuan Geordie is nowhere to be seen. The Dugout Discussion will be open through all the action as Liverpool look to assert their late charge into a place fit enough to earn them some European football – even if it’s not quite they would have hoped for.

    Morning all. Well that was a nice -1 from baird... better than the -3 that would've come off the bench I suppose!

      Kuyt over Suarez. Suarez has consistently played well, but Kuyt seems to get the FPL points more often..He isn't a bad option though!

          You're one point about Suarez's role vs Kuyt's role, especially if Carrol is back.

          I'd bench VdV, but only because he is away from home :/ . Really tough call though.

    Just had a gander at the Optas for the current gwk. How good is Suarez compared to other forwards?

    Had the most touches, key passes, shots. Second in successful dribbles only 1 behind Oddthang.

        Team shooting stats: LIV second only to CHS for shots on goal (78 - 118) but they get a lot more on target 46/78.

        Yeah some tricky transfers. The key thing is to buy in players from teams with something to play for and less likely to rotate.

          Saying that though, I'm very much tempted to bring nani back in.

          I think its v likely he'll start (park ji sung is only for the v big games surely) and he has a huge point to prove if he wants to start at wembley. I think he'll be hungry.

          Blackburn game likely to be tight, but he and berba could destroy blackpool.

                Buying in Kuyt, the Hitz and Lamps have all worked out well in these past weeks since 31 when I removed Nani and co.

                Stayed clear of Citeh too which means I have a lot of non-rotatable players in my team.

                  yeah the run of greenies looks like continuing to restore a little bit of respectability to my score this year 🙂 Teams solid this week, the plan was if chelsea beat utd roon was coming in. If not the zog comes in. So zog it is 🙂
                  Spewing about modders. Last week I figured team looked awesome for gw37 but terrible for gw38 so I got modric in for the dgw, bench gw 37, then he's got one of the best fixtures gw38. Had to go and get himself broked 🙁

              Im not thinking about just this week, I'm thinking about who will score best in the last 2 games.

              Chelsea's are the main options this week but their last game is at everton who are not pushovers

              I'd be tempted by wigan or west ham but have 6.5 mil in bank.

              Liverpool very tempting but spurs and villa no way as good as bburn and bpool.

              Not sure really. Liverpool or united are top of my list I think.

                CHS shots on goal are incredible data-wise in last 7 gwks. I can see 3-4 goals v NEW at the weekend. Do you reckon Drogba will start ahead of Torres?

                  If I'm gonna buy chelsea it will be malouda or lampard (the latter if I take the wimp's route and match my rival)

                  For united I'm thinking nani/ berbatov

                  For Liverpool suarez. I think kuyt has been pretty lucky to score so well lately.

                  I wouldn't bother with drogba or torres myself, no idea with them.

    My team:

    Foster, Mignolet
    Luiz, Coleman, R.Johnson, Djourou, Walker
    A.Young, Lampard, VDV, Silva, Adam
    Zamora, DJ, RVP

    Trying to decide who to sell, thinking of either Djourou, Coleman, Luiz or Zamora as they are not guaranteed starters, although Zamora must have impressed Hughes against Liverpool?? Another option would be A.Young due to his difficult fixtures (Aresenal have been quite good defensively at home) to Der Hammer or N’Zog?

    Any ideas/recommendations (I have 1 free transfer 1.6M in the bank and a 16 point lead in my mini-league)? Advice would be greatly appreciated guys!

          I'd get nani in. I think he'll be starting now and your rival won't be selling him when meireles is injured.

          Nani and suarez are the biggest danger to you but its tough for you to buy suarez.

            Thanks for the advice, Nani is definitely an option. Can't afford Suarez without taking a hit, I swapped Nani for VDV, you reckon A.Young to Nani is a good move? Will Nani play the last 2 games?

              We can't be certain of nani starting both games... But i think it's quite likely. In the case he does start, i think he has a point to prove.

              Currently your risk is nani starts and does well:

              Loads of points for rival
              No points for you

              If you buy him the risk is he doesn't start:

              Low points for your rival
              Low points for you (Plus you lost out on young's points)

              I'd buy him

                  i forgot to mention though, even if nani does well and you didnt buy him - it's ok if young does quite well too.

                  So the risk is really nani outscoring young significantly.

    Explaining the FPL Open wildcard rule.

    First of all, there have been only a handful of wildcards used in the FPL Open. Most teams used their season wildcard before GW30.

    Lower ranked team uses wildcard - 16 point penalty of more than 5 changes are made to played 11 from the previous 15 from the gameweek before.
    The penalty is 12 if this isn't the case. This rule is to mainly protect the higher seeded teams from having no chance against a newly formed wildcard side.

    Higher ranked team uses wildcard - no penalty if the opponent doesn't take a hit & only a 4 point penalty if a hit is taken. In a dgw the penalty could go up to 8 if the opponent took at least 2 hits.

    In your case you opponent only took a hit so it starts -4 vs -4. They could have taken another hit to make it -8 all. That wasn't worded very well when I made the rules.
    With your wildcard you have the advantage of transferring your funds anyway you like. Mulumbu in your team shows how the wildcard is useful. He will never/rarely play in your team & is there to be a filler that actually plays.
    You have the benefit of picking a team specifically for the dgw & the last 2 gameweeks. You had the opportunity to change your front 3 but choose not to despite the top 2 teams playing eachother. You have 6 dgw players in your team so potentially that's 17 games compared to your opponents 15.

    I really hope that Silva + Modric can score at least 4 in tonights match to get you through. It would be a terrible way to get knocked out. I really hope Silva gets at least 4 points & Modric doesn't play.

    Hope this a satisfactory explanation of why the wildcard rule exists.

      yeah this makes sense but if, say, one player is 2000th in the world and the other is 2001st in the world it seems a bit unfair to give such a huge advantage to one of them!

        In the case above it's 726 vs 1603 with 23 points between them atm. Moral of the story, be Moron FC or the highest seed in the FPL Open. 😉

          yeah well the guy complaining is a higher seed than his opponent.

          The only people who i can understand complaining are those with a lower seed who want to use their wildcard. They are effectively being told to choose between doing well in this competition, or getting a high overall ranking (because a wildcard pretty much knocks them out)

            Exactly, it gives alot of protection to the higher seed. the higher seed always used their wildcard & always won handsomely anyway. The highest seed with the wildcard gets to make unlimited trades compared to 4 max to the lower opponent.

              Yep so we agree there is a big advantage for the higher seed.

              I wonder if the gap between seeds could be factored in though.

              Currently it's the same advantage for

              1st v 1,000,000th

              and

              999th v 1000th

              In the first case the protection makes perfect sense because the second guy is almost certainly a worse player. In the second case, it's debateable whether one guy deserves protection.

              Maybe the rule could be:

              The higher seed (where his position is at least 25% higher) bla bla bla

                Good idea.

                The rule was really to stop qualifiers knocking out top seeds in the 1st round. Most people had used their wildcard by GW30. Obviously a great effort to be in the top 1K without using the wildcard. Having no rule at all would have made it a complete joke. Maybe a rank 10000th plus 25%, 12500 would only incur an 8 point penalty etc. having a wildcard always gives the owner an advantage. They could easily copy the other team & fix up the bad parts of that team in that gameweek.

                  yeah well i definitely think the size of the gap between opponents needs to be a factor.

                  Also, I'm not sure many people will take your competition more seriously than the FPL game itself - so by restricting their use of a wildcard you might drive them away from your competition altogether.

                  I always have a plan for using a wildcard 2-3 weeks ahead and if it got to that week and I was the lower seed, I'd be like, "OK bye bye FPL open."

                    Only a handful have used their wildcard in the last 7 gameweeks. The 2nd wildcard has been a major factor as many knew it was another chance to get an easy improvement in rank. The value of the wildcard imo reduces with every gameweek outside dgws. This dgw isn't really a great time due to only 2 teams being involved. Easier to plan for this dgw then transform your team for the last 2 rounds.

          He isn't crazy, I see his point of view very easily. i just think he could have done better regarding Rooney & Drogba then this issue wouldn't have come up. It's there to give the lower ranked player half a chance at least. Simply shifting funds around could have got Lampard in & a cheap forward like Odemwingie & an easy entry into the semis.

              Very true, I wouldn't really want to be stuck with 6 from Man City & Spurs over the last 2 weeks. Sure each has a good fixture in their last 2 but I would try to hide my Spurs players versus the rampant Liverpool.

              It works for the short term memory only, so if you cram - use that time to memorize something like the headings / key words which will unlock knowledge which is there somewhere.

              Make links between all the things you're revising.

              I used to revise in a very unusual way but with pretty good results - I drew weird pictures to remind me of everything through word association.

            Anybody considering Maxi? I'd need a hit to get Kuyt. Had said that I wouldn't get him after that first hat-trick as it was out of the blue but then I said thatabout Kuyt and he's gone on to a grea run of form.

              Depends if you need someone this week. I'll be getting N'Zog in this week, and probably taking a 4 pointer next week.

              I think we may all be getting a bit carried away with the United Blackpool game really. If Utd get a point against Blackburn (which they should), reserves will obviously be played against Blackpool and it's no guarantee it'll be a battering. Blackpool are fighting for their lives and have tightened up a tad of late.

                A lot of united's reserves are actually better than some of their first team.

                Berbatov and nani have arguably been united's best players. Smalling has been solid. The little twins are looking sharp etc.

                I expect united to win comfortably in celebration of their title, with fast paced football, counter attacking when blackpool get desperate.
