Scout Report – Yassine El Ghanassy

Having snapped up Ben Foster on a permanent deal earlier this month, Steve Clarke’s second move into the summer transfer market has brought Belgian midfielder Yassine El Ghanassy to the Hawthorns on a season-long loan. The 22-year-old arrives from Belgian outfit AA Gent with the Baggies afforded the option of making the deal permanent in the 2013/14 campaign…

A versatile player, El Ghanassy can play on either flank and also has the ability to be fielded up front – a factor which should be beneficial to his game time in the upcoming campaign and one that presents an intriguing option to Fantasy managers. The club’s sporting and technical director Dan Ashworth revealed El Ghanassy has been on the radar for a while now and was full of praise for the style of play that the new boy will bring to the Baggies:

“Yassine is a player we have watched develop for a couple of years. He has shown in Belgium his ability to put defenders on the back foot and create and score goals and he is on the fringes of the national team. He is an exciting, young player who we hope will grow into the league and prove a real asset. He offers us a different option and is the type of player I am sure our supporters will warm to and get right behind.”

The Statistics

El Ghanassy was picked up by La Louvière in his native country and made his way through their youth system before being handed a first-team debut in 2008 at the age of 18. He made just six league appearances for the club, though, before making his way to Gent. His first season in the Belgian top division consisted of a handful of games but the departure of Bryan Ruiz in the summer of 2009 allowed El Ghanassy to nail down a regular first-team role.

In his second full season for Gent, the youngster demonstrated the potential that saw the likes of Man City and AC Milan cast an eye over his possible acquisition, with 12 assists and six goals from 30 league appearances helping his side to the title. El Ghanassy is mainly renowned for his creativity and looking at the stats, it’s clear to see why – in total, he played 90 times for his former club, returning 10 goals and 22 assists before the Baggies came calling this summer.

The Prospects

West Brom were hardly prolific last time round – a total of 45 goals scored was worse than two of the relegated sides (Bolton and Blackburn) and indicative of their struggles going forward under Roy Hodgson. Bearing in mind that this is Clarke’s first stint in the managerial hotseat, the jury may be out on the Baggies potential for the season ahead, though the new boss has already hinted at a more attacking approach, particularly at the Hawthorns.

While this could prompt us to reassess the likes of Peter Odemwingie after the Nigerian’s poor previous campaign, Clarke has admitted he may take his time to integrate El Ghanassy into the first-team, suggesting it’s perhaps a better bet to hold fire for just now and assess the midfielder’s potential game time. At 5.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and only 4.7 in the Sky Sports game, though, he looks an intriguing proposition and, if fielded up front, would offer us an out-of-position prospect too, given that both games classify El Ghanassy as a midfielder.

“He is an exciting prospect who will add something different to our squad. We believe he has got the raw talent to make an impact here. This is a big move for Yassine. We’ll have to be patient with him as he settles into a new country and gets to grips with the demands of the Premier League.”

Clarke’s opening couple of fixtures – home to Liverpool and away at Spurs – suggests he may keep with those players more accustomed to the rigours of the Premier League before unleashing El Ghanassy in a starting role. With home clashes against (EVE, RDG, QPR) in the following five Gameweeks, the young Belgian could well be one to watch if his manager affords him the game time his talent deserves.

My ex used to love going to the matches with me. God with all the shrieking and the text messaging and the yapping it really put me off my enjoyment of it. If you want any other reasons why it's a good thing I give you Jackie Oatley and that annoying women supporter you used to hear when Arsenal played on MOTD screeching. Leave them alone to enjoy their 50 Shades fantasy.....We will enjoy the REAL fantasy!!!

        I know that's probably a good thing.
But why don't they like it? Because men wouldn't like it if they liked it? Was it a historical accident that men started to like it first and it could have been vice versa?

I'd change Jelavic and Bent to a cheaper 3rd striker (Graham) and Aguero. Alternatively, Tevez could be a solution but his situation needs monitoring as he could be rotated with Mario. I think Nelsen has been signed as backup and won't start.

Graham and Sinclair is probably a bit much. Having said that, I am thinking about Graham and the Michu-chu train.

You can get a starting 4m defender. Wait until closer to the seasonwhen we have a better idea of expected lineups but the promoted teams and Norwich all have starting 4m defenders.

Mrs China Mag is considering changing strategy this season, and forgoing big hitters for having a balanced (full) squad.

I'm fully aware that the main disadvantage of this strategy is that you usually want your big hitters for captain options, but i'm wondering if the advantages of the strategy outweigh that.

    1) Have 15 quality players, so you will always be able to play 11 quality players, no need for reading or west ham defenders ever playing, or danny guthrie!
    2) MORE (2nd tier) captain options, so most of the time you will have a good option playing at home against a rubbish team
    3) You can pick cheap ways into good teams, who are rotation risks (clichy, rafeal, kaboul, kagawa) because if they don't play, you can be confident you have somebody decent to come in
    4) I'm sure there was another important one, but it escapes me now!

    Thoughts?

PS My team will still probably have 2 big hitters in each position.

Can't see it working too well to be honest man. Like you said, a few big hitters are needed in each position imo. Not having any expensive players means you won't ever be able to get any in, without a few transfers at least, as you simply won't have the money to do a like for like swap.

This is true. But defenders rarely come on as sub. I would only pick forward players who would likely play the majority of games (with a little rotation)

I tried a similar thing last season. Your problem comes that RVP/Torres/Rooney/Aguero is playing Norwich at home. Every other player has brought him in and captained him. Then he scores 4 and grabs an assist (RVP style v Blackburn). It took me the rest of the season to catch those points back up. If I can give you an alternative idea. Downgrage Hazard to 6-7mil player and keep 1 slot i.e. Tevez free. Then every week keep your 'balanced' squad but allow that posistion to swap for whocever is the best captain that week e.g. Rooney, Kun etc and then you will always have that player covered and the rest of your team will be more balanced than most.

Sorry if this has already been brought up but is there any likely to start 4.0 priced defenders from WHM/REA/NOR? I think Tierney will start but im not too familiar with the recently promoted teams.

naaa can see them struggling away at Everton, they beat a lot of top teams at home last season. Despite all the stuff about Everton poor starters etc United wont run riot.

General idea most people here are going with is bringing in Manu after Chelsea DGW, primarily in the form of Torres -> Rooney.

The Pienaar move can progress following the sale of Yobo to Fenerbahce. Everton really do operate on next to no budget. Why are clubs investing in Forest and Leeds but not Everton? I know the other two have a massive history and great tradition but Everton have everything in place except an injection of cash.

Because I'm bored, any major comments to be made on this one:

    DDG/Federici (Standard pick it seems)
Lescott/Cole (why are there so many Ivanovic's when they're the same price?)/some 5.0's and McCartney to make up the numbers
    Silva/Osman/Hazard/Noble/Dembele
    Aguero/Jelavic/Pogrebnyak

I guess counting on 2 Everton players at the start of a season is always asking for trouble...

Ivanoivic has more of an attacking threat. I think it depends whether Chelsea sign a right back. If they do then Cole is the better pick. I prefer Torres to Jelly at the moment. Osman is an interesting pick.

Disagree that Ivanovic is more attacking but if that's the reason why at least I can understand that.

I can do Jelavic -> Torres since I have the 0.5 in the bank.

Part of me wants to keep that for Cole -> Baines, but to be honest I'm likely to Wildcard in GW1, so I should probably just pick the best I can for that GW which means 3 Chelsea players

Disagree with that comment, I have Silva and Hazard which gives me 2 big mids - not sure you can do more than that

Aguero/Rooney is easily switched between - again I don't think you can have both. Jelavic is 8.5, which is a bit of a risk I agree but I could get Bent/Torres/Tevez if need be in that spot

I have picked my team this year in 5 minutes, and I'm happy with it. I usually tinker for days. Why is it so much easier this year?

I understand your point, I'm sitting here going "Am I really going to change this much?" and then I get disappointed because I loved playing around for a month going through 100s of iterations and the complaining that "I had him in my squad" when someone whose not in my team scores.

.....a long time to go until deadline day. 1 transfer could put you back to square 1.

I know Saints' defence is probably to be avoided currently, but I envisage Clyne will go straight into the starting eleven, whereas Jose may be one to lose his spot if/when we sign CB recruits. Something to bear in mind for y'all searching for £4m starters.

Yes, I thought Clyne was excellent at Palace, Adkins has done well there.

Anyone care to do my first ever? RMT! This is only first time through after the auto select but it feels right. Didn't mean to have potentially 5dgw players tho, just how it worked out.

Not convinced about Walters, Stoke don't score that many goals. McClean or Osman are the same price.
