Ryan Noble climbs off the bench to secure a win for Sunderland against FC Groningen, in a game that sees Carlos Cuellar and Wes Brown both limp out of the action in the first-half. Roberto Di Matteo introduces the likes of John Terry and Ashley Cole into the fray against Paris St-Germain, but Chelsea are forced to rely on a late strike to earn a hard-fought draw…

Sunderland 3 FC Groningen 2
The Black Cats finished in third place in the Peace Cup after a last-gasp victory over FC Groningen. Ben Wilson was handed a starting role between the sticks after Simon Mignolet picked up a minor groin problem in training, while Carlos Cuellar took his place in the first XI after impressing as a sub in the previous match with Seongnam, as Martin O’Neill opted for a 4-3-3 for the match against the Dutch side. Sunderland took the lead against the run of play through Connor Wickham but went in at the break 2-1 down after Cuellar and Wes Brom both limped off injured.

The second half saw O’Neill hand opportunities to a number of youngsters but the Premier League outfit failed to make their threat count, with Wickham and Campbell, in particular, missing chances aplenty. Sunderland’s final substitute, Ryan Noble, came on with just 13 minutes remaining and his spark helped turn the match in his side’s favour. Noble set up Campbell to score with just two minutes remaining before then finding the net himself with a superb solo effort, beating three men before hammering home from 18 yards – a fine way to score his first senior goal for the club.

Post-match, O’Neill gave an injury update and didn’t seem overly concerned on Mignolet or Cuellar; good news for Fantasy managers eyeing up the latter at 4.5 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

“Simon had a groin problem today and we decided not to risk him in the game. Wes has done some damage and that’s a concern, while Carlos complained of his thigh being sore.”

Sunderland Starting XI: Wilson (Pickford 64); Gardner, Brown (Egan 37), Cuellar (Bramble 13), Richardson (Noble 77); Colback, Cattermole, Meyler; Lynch (Laing 60), Campbell, Wickham.

Paris St-Germain 1 Chelsea 1
Chelsea won a share of the spoils in their second game of their US tour thanks to a late strike from 18-year-old Brazilian Lucas Piazon. The striker came off the bench to combine with compatriot Ramires and claw the Londoners level.

Roberto Di Matteo kept faith with five of the side that took the field last time out against Seattle Sounders: Paulo Ferreira, David Luiz, John Mikel Obi, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku were all retained in the starting lineup.

There were several points of interest here: firstly we again saw a 4-2-3-1 formation, with Hazard getting an hour of pitch time, playing up behind the lone striker, Lukaku. The Chelsea boss emphasised the options he has with the Belgian in his post-match statements

“Hazard is a versatile player and he can play on the wing and he can play in the middle and that is where we are using him, but it depends on the options we have because once everyone is back we will have more of those.”

Di Matteo then went on to confirm that the 4-2-3-1 will likely remain over the course of the season…

“This formation is a shape that we used at the end of last season and it has served us well. We are trying two shapes in practice as well to be ready for all eventualities, and it will also depends on the players we will have available.”

Both statements will increase confidence in Hazard as a Fantasy option for next season, although clearly, as Di Matteo mentions, there are options to come into to the equation – most notably Juan Mata.

Frustratingly, we’ve yet to see Branislav Ivanovic at right-back. The Serb skippered the side from the centre of defence against Seattle and came off the bench yesterday to replace David Luiz. Di Matteo has started Ferreira at left-back while he waits for Ashley Cole’s return, with youngsters Sam Hutchinson and Nathaniel Chalobah taking up duties on the right over the two friendlies. So far then, we’ve had little assurance that Ivanovic will be free to claim the right-back role for next season.

Elsewhere, the Chelsea boss was able to welcome back some Euro 2012 players, with John Terry, Ashley Cole and Petr Cech all seeing their first action of the pre-season. Chelsea face MLS All-Starts on Wednesday – a game which should see the likes of Cole and Terry considered for starts which might well offer us more clues as to Di Matteo’s thinking for his defence. Fernando Torres is yet to join up with the party, but is being lined up for a possible run-out at the weekend.

Chelsea Starting XI: Cech (Turnbull 62); Hutchinson (Chalobah 62), Cahill (Terry 62), David Luiz (Ivanovic 45), Ferreira (Cole 62); Mikel (McEachran 62), Lampard (Essien 45); De Bruyne (Marin 45), Hazard (Malouda 62), Kakuta (Ramires 45); Lukaku (Piazon 62).

If you're going to do this you may as well go the whole hog and put out a front line of:

      RVP/Rooney/Aguero

      It's not impossible, you know.

Dammit though, I kind of just want RVP to go far far away to Juve or somewhere, all my draft teams have ignored him up to now but if he stays... uggghhhh, I'm coming around to the idea that he'll be a must-have again.

Actually not _that_ hard to fit him in. Phew.

You could have a front eight looking like this and cover most teams:

          Bale/Valencia/Walters/Noble/Maloney
          RVP/Aguero/Graham

          That looks pretty nice actually.

Like you, I too am a Premier League FF snob...however this Skysports game is actually pretty good and notably different to the PL version. The main differences? Squad size (pick 11 only) and scoring (MoM, tackles made and passes completed will score you extra points; but, no BAPS and lessdifferentation between positions). Really makes you think...

    There's a FFS league too 😉 http://fantasyfootball.skysports.com/

      V little to criticise.

Strong midfield, good front line if Tevez gets decent game time,

is all eggs in Friedel basket a good move?

and Ivanovic may not be nailed on.

But i like Hangeland and Cuellar as your other two 'main' defenders.

      I assume you'll be playing 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 mostly?

    Pog - discuss.

I just don't get it. Okay so he got a few goals when he first arrived at Fulham, however:

    1. He did little in the remainder of the season.
    2. People who knew him before EPL don't rate him and suprised by his flurry of goals. Don't think it will last
    3. Reading.
    4. vs Chelsea in one of the DGW games, so likely only an extra 2pts, let's be honest.....
    5. Likley to want to ship him out within a few weeks which is hard for a 5.0 and probably requires two transfers.
    6. Reading.....

....of course he might be the bargin of the season and get the golden boot......but really?

Not convinced at all either, I'm having a sneaky look at/ punt on mccleary, great season last season in a shocking team and cheaper than their other overpriced mids. Dgw to start and at 5m for a mid far easier to ship out in a few wks time.

People will only get him if transfer is confirmed. Their fixtures r decent after gw1 and his performances at the end if last season make him the biggest steal ever at 6.5 imo. If he had moved before the prices came out we could have expected at least 7.5/8m imo.

Just something i came across on sky in relation to the promoted sides, you may or may not find it interesting,
    Southampton

    Top pick: Rickie Lambert

    Set-piece taker: Rickie Lambert

Goals conceded last season: 46 (18 clean sheets)

Rickie Lambert (£6.8m) is the obvious pick for Fantasy bosses desperate to discover the new Grant Holt after topping the Championship scoring charts last season.

The 30-year-old not only netted 27 times last time but was also responsible for 13 assists, just one less than the league's highest contributor.

With Lambert netting nine times from the spot, his strike partner Billy Sharpe (£5.8m) was just as prolific from open play, scoring 19 times including one penalty.

Sharpe may struggle to retain his starting berth however, with fellow frontman Jay Rodriguez (£5.5m), who netted 15 times for Burnley last season, added to the ranks.

Adam Lallana (£4.9m) starred for the Saints in the middle of the park last season, scoring 11 times during the campaign, while Guly Do Prado (£4.7m) found the net 10 times.

At the back, Danny Fox (£3.7m) looks a shrewd pick having contributed 10 assists from left-back in a defence which kept an impressive 18 clean sheets.

    Reading

    Top pick: Alex Pearce

    Set-piece taker: Ian Harte

Goals conceded last season: 41 (20 clean sheets)

While the collective effort from Reading's all-contributing squad was impressive last season, it also makes it difficult to pick out key players.

Adam Le Fondre (£6.5m) was their top scorer with just 12 goals, hardly the sort of tally likely to tempt Fantasy bosses scrambling for his services, while midfielder Jimmy Kebe (£4.6m) contributed the most assists with 10 but netted just three times.

Pavel Pogrebnyak (£7.2m) has joined the ranks over the summer after impressing during his loan spell at Fulham, scoring six times in his 12 appearances, although form teetered off towards the end of the season.

However, the Royals backline is definitely worth a look at after keeping a league-high 20 clean sheets en route to their title triumph.

Australia goalkeeper Adam Federici (£4m) is one of the cheapest in the game and even has a goal in him, having netted against Cardiff in 2009, while centre-back Alex Pearce (£4.2m) netted five times last term and Ian Harte bagged four.

    West Ham

    Top pick: Kevin Nolan

    Set-piece taker: Mark Noble

Goals conceded last season: 48 (17 clean sheets)

The Hammers' return to the top flight reunites Fantasy bosses with a perennial favourite Kevin Nolan (£4.9m).

The attacking midfielder hit double figures for a third successive season last term with 13 goals.

Mark Noble (£4.7m) was also pretty prolific from the middle of that park last season with eight goals to his name, although all but one were from the spot.

While Carlon Cole (£6.7m) was West Ham's top scorer with 14 goals last season, Ricardo Vaz Te (£6.2m) was the league's second highest with his contributions for Barnsley and then the Hammers seeing him rack up 20 in total.

At the other end of the pitch, Sam Allardyce's men were the least stringent of those to get promoted, conceding over a goal a game.

The Hammers boss has added veteran stopper Jussi Jaaskelainen (£3.8m) to his ranks after releasing Robert Green, while James Tomkins (£4.1m) is their highest valued defender having scored four times last term.

"Almost" everyones plan is to get Torres for gw1 then ditch for a b or c,
what if he scores a rake in the DGW? People gonna ditch him before home game
against newcastle? Ditch him for blank in gw3 with qpr STK arse NOR on the horizon?
I'll be making him captain gw1 hoping it works out big time then keeping,
obviously if he fails (highly probable) i'll ditch, just saying "best laid plans" an all that...
