Vidic Blow for United

Manchester United have this afternoon confirmed Nemanja Vidic is set to be sidelined for around eight weeks. The Serbian missed Sunday’s trip to Liverpool and while reports had initially suggested he would return for this weekend’s home showdown with Tottenham, they have proven to be way off the mark, as the club announced:

“Nemanja Vidic has had a meniscus operation on his right knee and will be out for around eight weeks. Sir Alex, as a precautionary measure, rested Vidic at the weekend, after he complained of tightness in his knee, however, further medical investigation revealed the underlying problem. The central defender was operated on this week and will be sidelined for about eight weeks.”

It’s a bitter blow for Ferguson as his side square up to a run of fixtures that pit them against four of last season’s top six in the next five Gameweeks. Faith in the United backline has been dented by a single clean sheet accrued in the opening first five matches and today’s news will only lessen confidence in their ability to nullify opponents.

It’s perhaps a worry for Rafael’s newly-acquired owners – the right-back has been transferred in by over 31,000 FPL managers in the Gameweek so far, second only to Leighton Baines for defenders. If the right-back is to prosper, he’ll likely need to continue the attacking output that has so far harvested two goals in four starts – a tough ask, with games against Spurs, Newcastle, Chelsea and Arsenal on the horizon.

The Vidic news will – once again – promote Jonny Evans in our thinking. The Irishman benefitted from his skipper’s absence last term and looks set to establish himself as a regular in the first XI until the Serbian is ready to return. Bearing in mind that Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are still injured, there’s virtually no competition for Evans or Rio Ferdinand to worry about. Intriguingly, the two centre-halves and Rafael all come in under 6.0 in FPL – with starts looking assured and rotation threats in goal and at left-back, they seem nailed-on until Ferguson’s injury worries begin to ease.

With a threadbare backline that has struggled so markedly to produce clean sheets, it may well be that Ferguson has no option but to go on the attack in order to win games right now. If the same defensive pattern continues, returns at the back could well be minimal – such a scenario would place even greater reliance on Robin Van Persie and co to produce the goods up top, as United look to ride out what is a potentially difficult period.

    Schwarzer I Ruddy

    Ivanvovic I Ridgewell I Demel I Clyne I Harte

    Hazard I Yaya I Michu I Piennar I Maloney

    RVP I Tevez I Graham

    Happy with:

    Schwarzer/Ruddy combo
    Ridge, Demel, Clyne
    Yaya Piennar
    RVP

Doubts over form/frotation and/or fixtures with:

    Tevez
    Ivanovic
    Graham
    Hazard
Michu (somewhere in the middle of these two groups)

    Dud:

    Harte

I think my best move this week will be Ivanovic to Baines

I’ve already got Piennar and with a fantastic fixtures to come I need Baines.

Would also like to get rid of Graham for Berba but I feel the Baines move is my priority.

I’ll probably just get Lambert next week or stick with Graham depending on how this week goes.

Can someone explain where the Suarez love comes from please? People seem so eager to ship out Michu and Hazard after 2 blanks and Tevez after being rested from one game. Suarez has scored 2 in 5 so far in a struggling team that don't look to be any good in the final third. Is there something I'm missing?

I know but I just don't see it being him. He just doesn't seem to be a prolific striker. I think the goals are bigger in Holland or something.

My pick for the next big thing would be Giroud once he adapts. He's got Santi feeding him and he was top scorer last year in what now looks like a pretty bad Montpellier side.

    UPDATED POST
Just adding a few factors I did not earlier. Some of the PPI scores are not fitting in but I think I am getting closer. Going to leave this now until next week or until you lot want to have a go. So I had absolutely nothing to do today but kill time since the doc advised not to go to work. Thought I would look into the PPI scores. What served as a start was the Pienaar PPI rising from 10 to 17. Here goes whatever little I can offer:-
    A) Assist = 7PPI
Pienaar went up from 10 PPI to 17PPI only because of an Assist. This confirms it.

    B) Goal = 8-14 PPI (Probably different for CF’s, Mids and Defenders)
Benteke came on and scored against Swansea playing only 20 minutes and got only 12PPI. Sinclair on the other hand came on for the Swans in the first game of the season and scored. He got 20 PPI. This makes me think that Benteke probably has a Shot off target and Sinclair might have put some crosses in. But there is a possibility that Forwards get around 12PPI for a Goal, Midfielders around 14PPI and Defenders probably higher, just like how we have in FPL. I looked at the subs because players playing a full 90 would be involved a lot more in the game hence making it difficult to check their score. Checked the scores of Ashley Cole, Lescott and Rafael as well and 12-14 is a good assumption for Defending goal scorers.

    C) Clean Sheet = 8-10PPI
Saw the scores of the defenders who have kept clean sheets. The least PPI for a defender was around 12 but then I checked Metrsackers stats. He had 9PPI in the first game of the season including a CS. So assuming he did nothing in the game, I like the assumption of 8-10 PPI for a clean sheet. On an average, CBs with just the CS scored between 12-20 PPI.

I also suspect that there are about 3 PPI for conceding only 1 goal since the defender PPI’s are being quite a pain to tabulate.

    D) Shot on target = -2PPI
http://fantasy.premierleague.com/the-scout/ says Fellaini had a goal and 5 shots on target. He got 27 PPI. So let’s assume 10 PPI for the goal and 7 for the Assist. 2 for the minutes, 2-3 for the winning side. 10 for the shots on target. . He fouls and misses chances as well which probably discounts the passes made PPI. He also had a shot or two off target as well which got his PPI to a low 27.

    E) Shot off target = -2PPI
Easiest way to look into this was Defoe GW4. He had 2 goals and about 4 shots off target I think. Scored an 18 PPI. So that’s 16 for the goals. 3 for the win. 2 for the minutes. Passes completed and other ministats will amount to maybe 5 more. Subtract -8 for shot off target and we are set.

    F) Win = 3-4PPI

I have factored in the win points looking at quite a few scores. 3-4 PPI is a fair assumption for a win. I also assume 2 to 3 negative PPI for losing side will be awarded as well.
    G) Minutes played:

On an average, I think a player playing 90 minutes will get 2PPI as I have used that assumption in quite a few of my calculations.

    H) The Mini Points.
Reading http://fantasy.premierleague.com/the-scout/ tells us that consideration for PPI is also given to the following factors:-
    a) Winning Tackles
    b) Interceptions
    c) Dribbles
    d) Blocks
    e) Clearances
    f) Crosses
My thinking is all these factors amount to 1 or max 2 PPI. 2 will only be for some of the factors.
Similary, I think negative PPI will be there for fouls and incomplete passes.
    I) Passes made:-
5-6 successful passes equals one PPI in my opinion. Fits in nicely when I do Gerrard’s calculations according to Steven Gerrard picked up a couple of BP. The Liverpool skipper opened the scoring for the hosts and supplemented this with 2 shots on target, 30 completed passes and 5 crosses.
    Calculation –
    9-10 goal + 2 mins + 4 sot + 5 crosses + 5 completed passes. Amounts to his PPI score.
    Santi’s example as well
Santi Cazorla earned a couple of BP after producing an assist, 2 shots on target, 49 completed passes and a couple of successful tackles as the visitors extended their unbeaten run. Calculations:
    7 assist + 2 mins + 4 sot + 2 tackles + 8-9 passes + 2 other ministats. His total was 26

    J) Yellow/Red Cards
Dyer only played 14 minutes and got two yellows equaling a Red. His PPI was a Negative 7. Make of this what you may. -3 or -4 for a yellow imo.

    K) Goalkeeping PPI:-

All I managed to get was this – “Ben Foster’s 5 saves (including caught crosses) was enough to earn a single BP as the Baggies earned another Hawthorns clean sheet.”
He got 19 PPI. So I am assuming the PPI for CS is higher for a keeper since he doesn’t have much chance to earn PPI otherwise. So My break up for Foster would be 9(CS) + 5(Saves) + 2mins + 3win.
    I) Goals conceded:-
-2 PPI from what it looks like for more than 1 goal conceded.

    J) Penalties Saved: Unfortunately none of the Pens saved Keepers have kept CS. But from what I see, looks like there are 6-8 PPI for a Pen save.

    K) Penalties Missed: Couldn’t figure what happens out here. Went through the Penalty misses. Not much in it. Probably a shot on/off target if nothing.

    SPECIAL MENTIONS:
Baines leads in PPI amongst defenders. Duff amongst Midfielders. And a certain Bulgarian beast has amassed 83 PPI in two starts. Highest forward is Tevez with 110 PPI but with a lot more minutes than Berba.
Small note from the FPL scout page on Berba-
Dimitar Berbatov earned the maximum bonus points (BP) at the DW Stadium with a strong all-round display on Saturday afternoon. Going forward, the Bulgarian produced 4 shots on target and an assist, while 3 clearances, 8 interceptions and a successful tackle are indicative of his current work ethic – he has now returned the maximum BP in both his starts for the Cottagers.
Also why Bale got max BP’s was because he was a LB in the first half. Which led to this –
Gareth Bale earned the maximum bonus points (BP) as Tottenham recorded their first home win under Andre Villas-Boas. Starting the match at left-back, the Welshman reverted to his familiar wing role after the break and produced a strong all-round display for the hosts. Going forward, Bale had an assist, 4 shots on target, a couple of successful dribbles and a cross amongst his EA SPORTS PPI stats, while he also made 2 successful tackles, a clearance and 4 interceptions to pick up the maximum BP for the second Gameweek running.

I highly recommend you lot keep a tab on http://fantasy.premierleague.com/the-scout/ to get more of an idea about the PPI’s. You can check them in the player history under the ESP column.

Hope this helps. Do take it forward if you feel like.

Note these are assumptions only and all factors do not fit in. But this isn’t a bad judge in my opinion.

This is a fantastic post Lateriser. If your not a member do you want us to trawl the stats for players who did very little (positive or negative)?

Also I thought being on the winning team affected PPI, which I always presumed worked as a multiplication factor. So an assist is worth 7PPI for a player on the winning team, but less for a player who lost/drew.

chelsea have got too many good midfield that are going to be subject to rotation,
      could become a minefield
if oscar could be gaurenteed a run in the team though, excellent value

evening, need to get rid of vidic and maicon. back line is Rangel/Demel/Barnett so i want two decent defenders with max budget of 11.2m (including -4 points, 10.8m with no point deduction).

    looking at:
    a) Jagielka/Newcastle (STaylor or Santon)
    b) Cashley or Johnson + a third budget defender under 4.8m to rotate with Demel/Barnett

Not keen on Rafael and no defender under 4.8m stands out for me.

Appreciate your comments/alternatives, married with children overseas so games clash with saturday morning cartoons and no chace to watch too may and MOTD banned in my territory, jajaja

    Lambert | Fletcher | Berba

Ok. So this is my team with a long term perspective. All goal-scoreing mids with mid-priced strikers who can very well score often. I am currently on a WC. Any help/suggestion/tips/change will be appreciated. Thank You.

Quite balanced team but there is flaw. Why spend big for 2(!) decent goalkeepers? Downgrade one of them, search for a rotation strategy and you will have plenty of cash to spend elsewhere.

    2 Questions:

    A) Do you think it's worth me ripping my team to shreds now to get RVP in with Rooney returning imminently? Who's a slightly cheaper alternative, Aguero? Torres?

    B) Anyone think Oscar may be a good differential to Hazard? He is quite a bit cheaper, freeing some budget for other areas, and looking at his stats from last couple of games, he's getting into more attacking positions and attempting shots more than Hazard.

      A) No. People are now looking to get rid of RVP, upgrade their mids and go with 3 mid priced nailed on strikers instead.

I think it is a decent strategy but at some point Utd are going to do a 6 or 7-0 against someone and RVP is going to score like 20 odd points in the game and everyone without him will then be weeping and gnashing their teeth for not having him and being able to captain him that week.

      B) Yes. But Chelsea mids are a lottery for rotation and I genuinely think Mata is the best option for their midfield.

A lot of people here think the Hazard to Oscar move is bad, I myself have actually been considering it. After watching the last Chelsea match, Oscar looked very keen to score and played quite well, plus Hazard was the one who made way for Moses.

He is more of a risk, but the reward in the short term could pay quite well!

Vidic injury news really is no surprise. The guy is a sicknote. United defence is full of them. I suggest Sir Alex check the injury history of any future defenders he wants to sign.

Good news for Rafael owners like me though and if only Jonny Evans was still £4.5m like last season!!!

If you're set on Cech, I would take someone cheaper than Mig as a backup, but I would also consider 2 rotating cheapies like Foster and Bego. I would put in Rafael for Rangel with that cash. Then, if you could get Ba in for Fletcher and Silva in for Barfa I think your team would be better. You might have to downgrade Nolan to Sterling/Guthrie and McAuely/Martin to some 4.0 defenders.

How's the goin. At present Nelsen, and Onunoha, Zamora in good form, really like Hoillett, was excellent at the weekend, dropped in price and played practically as a striker. Will hope to get him in if establishes his place in the team. Still think QPR are a bit of a watching brief at present, but could be a bucketful of bargains there should they get going. Hope that helps a bit.
