Pre-Season

Sleeper – Matt Jarvis

Having tasted relegation with Wolves at the end of the 2011/12 campaign, Matt Jarvis was afforded the chance of a quick top-flight return with just a few days left of last summer’s transfer window. Costing West Ham a club record fee in the region of £10m, the winger was soon followed by the loan acquisition of Andy Carroll as Sam Allardyce looked to freshen up his front three in light of the Hammers’ promotion:

Initially, there was a degree of relative optimism that Jarvis – at 6.0 – could potentially rival Kevin Nolan as a genuine mid-price Fantasy contender in the Hammers midfield. Given that his final season at Molineux had harvested eight goals, six assists and 14 bonus points, for a respectable 142 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) points, Jarvis’ delivery from the left flank looked tailor-made for Carroll’s aerial abilities, with plenty of assists anticipated.

By the time the season had come to an end, however, Jarvis had proved a bitter disappointment for Fantasy managers. Despite a security of starts which saw him make 29 first XI appearances (in addition to three games off the bench), he found the net just twice and also chipped in with just a couple of FPL assists, ending his first term at Upton Park on just 92 points in the FPL game – a full 57 points behind Nolan, and 50 points less than his tally for Wolves the previous year.

The Prospects

In all likelihood, Jarvis’ displays over the course of 2012/13 should see his price drop further across the Fantasy games. Given his minimal impact, there’d be little surprise if the former Wolves man slipped down to 5.5 in FPL but, while last term’s returns are undoubtedly far from persuasive, his home form towards the tail end of last term, which harvested a goal and four bonus points in his final couple of Upton Park appearances, suggests he may be worth monitoring.

Furthermore, the number of chances created last season indicates he was more than a little unlucky not to pick up a far greater number of assists. According to the Opta definition, Jarvis failed to supply a single assist for his Hammers team mates but, over the course of the campaign, made close to 50 “key passes” – a clear indication that he maintained a steady source of creativity from the flank. Indeed, Jarvis supplied 10 more goalscoring opportunities than Theo Walcott over 2012/13, for example, though thanks to his team mates’ superior finishing, the latter picked up 13 FPL assists, or 10 according to Opta.

While Carroll is currently back at parent club Liverpool, Allardyce has already admitted that securing the big forward’s future on a permanent basis is a “big priority”. The Geordie’s impact towards the end of the season also suggests he found his feet after a patchy settling-in period and, if he does indeed arrive, could bolster Jarvis’s potential next time out if he continues in the same vein. Allardyce has also been linked with Sevilla’s Alvaro Negredo as he looks to rectify a record that produced a mere 11 goals on the road all season – the worst away haul in the Premier League.

With Nolan set for an increase in cost after finishing the season with a flourish, it may well be that the Hammers skipper is priced out of our options in the mid-price bracket. Given that Mark Noble will remain the club’s spot-kick taker and offer us a budget midfield alternative, Jarvis is likely to stay firmly off Fantasy radars next time round. If he can maintain his creative endeavours, though, the winger will be optimistic of picking up more returns next time round and may be a real under the radar option as Allardyce looks to ensure his side avoid “second season syndrome” and improve upon last term’s tenth placed finish.

    I’m definitely not the first to put this idea forward, but I really think FPL will have to adjust their position classification/scoring system somehow for the next season.

    Mark put an interesting case accross a while ago, but there's not been much further discussion. You can read Mark’s article here: http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2013/04/17/opinion-tactics-have-formed-the-template-its-time-for-fantasy-football-to-adjust/

    Here are my thoughts. I'd really like to collect some feedback...

    While some players’ positional classification and scoring is simple (i.e. goalkeepers, centre-backs and strikers), there are quite a few ‘problematic’ positions that don’t fit neatly into any of the current outfield classifications of ‘defender’, ‘midfielder’ or ‘forward’, including:

    - 'midfielders' that play a in more advanced positions than you would expect from a midfielder, yet don’t play as far forward as a striker;
    - 'forwards' who drop off from the front onto the wing/into midfield;
    - 'defenders' that play as wing-backs (or even more attackingly);
    - and 'midfielders' that play just as (if not more) defensively than most full-backs, who are normally classified as 'defenders'.

    What is the solution to this? Do they

    a) stick to the system and risk having players badly classified and become out of position prospects – arguably part of the fun of the game – as well as risk having unownable players due to their unfavourable classification?

    b) add more classifications?

    c) do they do away with classifications and therefore remove the constraints on picking a certain number of players from each position, meanwhile rethinking the pricing and/or scoring system?

    "c" could work if they reward defensive players in such a way that allows them to compete with attackers in terms of points, perhaps by rethinking the scoring for clean sheets and goals scored as well as adding further scoring categories which reward defensive play, such as recovered balls or blocks.

    Alternatively, still continuing with the idea of doing away with position classifications, a higher minimum price for attackers would force managers into having to acquire defensive players to conform to the budget restrictions, while still allowing managers to pick their desired combination of more attacking players.

      I had some thoughts on this myself. I will try to find the link, but basically the idea was to have 'floating' classifications, so that players can score points based on where they fill in on the teamsheet. Therefore, if for example Bale is played out of position in defence for 60+ mins and Spurs keep a clean sheet, he will join in in the defensive returns.

      Don't think it was very well received at the time but still, what do you think?

            That's true, might be more effective for a Fellaini or Rooney, though the points advantages of midfielders over strikers are not as significant.

          Opta keep stats for each game about the formation played by a team, and the position taken by each player within that formation. However I don't know how they accommodate changes in formation during a game.

            I think at the time I was saying that points (and floating classifications) would only be allocated in an update after the game, so they would presumably score according to where the player played most of the game. But yeah it wouldn't always be obvious.

        That's fine. It's something I considered myself, as part of the fun is finding OOP players.

        Only problem is that, if they're any good, everyone else owns them and it gets boring. This is especially the case with OOP full-backs playing on the wing and 'midfielders' playing more like a forward.

      a) and c) are non-starters for me.

      a) because as I've written previously, the wider a pool of viable players there are, the better the game is as it means there are more ways of successfully playing the game. The existing system is weighed too heavily in favour of attacking players and therefore discourages selection of defensively-minded players. Also, the existence of OOP players is evidence of a shortcoming in the current system, not something I would see as an added bonus.

      c) because it means the game diverges away from the reality of football. What would stop you from picking 11 attacking mids and forwards with no goalkeeper or defenders? Even if the scoring balance is evened out in favour of defensive players, my hypothetical 0-0-5-6 formation would still be allowed, which is clearly barmy.

      You will never get the game completely aligned with how real football works, but they should be trying to get it as aligned as possible, within the constraints of keeping it as simple as possible so as not to discourage the casuals. Clearly it's a bit of a balancing act, but with the prevalence of 4-2-3-1 and 4-3-3 these days, the FPL game needs to move on and recognise that 4-4-2 is somewhat out of fashion these days.

      I would therefore favour your solution b), although I do have a few qualms about how this makes the game a bit more complicated. Quite simply I would introduce one new position, the defensive mid, and force people to pick two defensive mids and three attacking mids as part of their squads in place of the existing 5 mids.

        Great contribution as ever, 3rdturd 🙂

        Under c), they'd really have to rethink the pricing and make attacking players a lot more expensive. Also, how would they award clean sheet points? Since under this proposed system there's no classifications, would every players get CS points? I'm not sure that makes sense.

        I guess b) is the best option for now.

      In my opinion, albeit a boring one - stick to (a) - the thing that FPL does best which all other fan man games don't do is keeping things simple. Reflect the potential in the price.

      I think they should leave it as is, I think that oop prospects add to the game. I think the only change they should make is to reclassify players that have been incorrectly classified so michu as a striker this year perhaps.

      what do you think of Podolski being reclassified as a mid? he played the same position as Walcott and played as the central striker as much or less than Walcott so it seems to me Pod should be reclassified as a mid.

        This is the reason I suggest a rethink.

        How can the creators of the game be expected to get these things right? How do we know whether Poldi will play as a striker, a 'wing forward' or a traditional winger?

        In reality, both should probably be 'forwards' since they're certainly not midfielders. Perhaps a change of the 1-5-5-3 contraint on player selection is needed to reflect formations, with a 1-5-2-4-2 system needed, since most clubs only play one striker anyway.

        Michu "In the hole" as a striker would be OK, but back in his midfield role, would imo, make him very unattractive as a FF prospect.
        I hope they leave him as a mid, giving owners a bit of a bonus some of the time.

    Are there restrictions on what kit a goalkeeper can wear?
    Bigger gloves surely help make saves, but is there a defined line that can't be crossed.

    If there are no defined restrictions, then why not kit DeGea up in the below kit. (looking stupid has never been a consideration before, so I'm not excepting that as an answer here)

      I imagine there are restrictions. The rules may not expressly mention the parking of a 30 year old Ford Granada Ghia in the goal but I suspect it wouldn't be allowed.

        Hardly the same thing though,
        There are always improvements in kit. Hell, gloves themselves are proof of that. Predator boots were a huge step forward at the time.
        You would assume there are rules to limit what I posted,,,, but are there?

      I saw this in a "you are the ref" in the Gurdian/Observer once.

      Basically, a players kit can't significantly increase their profile. If their shirt is too big and has 'flaps' under the arms, the ref can request him to change it I think.
