Sky Sports Fantasy Football 2013/14 Goes Live

As many of you will have noticed, the Sky Sports Fantasy Football game was officially launched earlier today, allowing us the opportunity for some early pre-season tinkering. We plan to analyse the player list in detail over a series of upcoming articles but for now, here’s a heads-up on some rule changes that have been introduced for 2013/14.

No Monthly Transfer Restrictions
Fantasy managers now have the opportunity to essentially wildcard a brand new team at any point during the season, providing they have an adequate number of trades left. Last season, we were, somewhat frustratingly, afforded a maximum of just five transfers per calendar month but this time round there are no restrictions – we can utilise our 40 transfers as we wish over the course of the campaign.

Save Points for Keepers
A crucial addition to the scoring system. Previously, stoppers were handed out points for clean sheets alone but their appeal is set to improve after Sky Sports decided to reward their endeavours between the sticks – for every five saves a keeper makes, he will now receive couple of bonus points; definitely something to consider when mulling over their merits. We will be adding save points bonus to our stats tables in the members area to allow analysis of how keepers would have fared over the past two seasons – we will update you when that’s available.

Captain Changes
A very significant rule change which offers the chance to accrue points from two captains in any given Gameweek. The Sky Sports game differs from the “stick or twist” scenario familiar to most Fantasy managers – you pick up double points from both your initial skipper and his armband replacement. If your first captain plays on a Saturday, you can, however, only switch the armband to someone with a match on Sunday or Monday – ie, a player with a fixture on a different day within the same Gameweek. You can change captain only once per Gameweek.

Other New Introductions
A “Shortlist” feature, similar to the Watchlist in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), allows to pencil in our potential targets for the games ahead. There’s also an Assistant Manager on hand to offer advice if required, where there will also be Awards on offer for our respective teams’ performances which could potentially lead to prizes – Sky Sports are looking to release more details later in the month.

It’s also worth noting that an app for Apple and Android devices is also available to ease those team changes whilst laden with supermarket bags. Handy.

The prizes have also be enhanced, with no less than £30,000 on offer for the winner this time around.

Scout Leagues
Thanks to our endeavours last season – which saw Fantasy Football Scout top of the Private League rankings – Sky Sports are now offering a £1,000 prize for the Fantasy manager who finishes in top spot in the FFS league this time round; enough motivation for most to get involved, surely.

The league name is “FFScout” and the code is 8000112 : we’ll get these posted in the middle column of the homepage.

Finally, we’re also considering the idea of an official money league this season. In another new feature, Sky Sports offer the option of £2, £5, £10 or £20 entry fee per person in a private league – we’ll have more on this if we decide to roll out an official Scout League. Give us your thoughts on this.

If you have any feedback on your early experiences with the game, be sure to post them in comments below. Already today we’ve passed on some issues regarding performance which have been examined and addressed due to feedback here.

As mentioned, we’ll be rolling out regular articles in the pre-season to guide your early decision making, including an appraisal of the player list and some position by position analysis.

So if you select captain X playing on a Saturday, you can change to captain Y on Sunday and still get the double points for X & Y? If that’s the case this game will not be very good for the casuals who don’t change their captain every week and you’ll need to change your captain every week just to keep up!

Exactly. Means captain points are way more valuable in this game & making mistakes gets punished more.

Different scoring system with no subs. More long term based. 1 injury = need to sell. Only good for UK & Irish residents.

Sounds like the sort of rule right up the alley of the FF addict 😀

Might give it another shot this year then, but will just have to bear with the awful interface

Doubling with a keeper and defender from the same team is ok imo, in fact in can be powerful. But two or three defenders from the same team can leave you stuck on certain gameweeks and lacks the long-term flexibility. An injury or benching would ruin your perfect plan.

What formation does everyone think is the best for the Sky game? I'm currently using 3-5-2 but am unsure whether 3-4-3 would still be the best.

Here's my rough draft at the moment...

    Vertonghen Olsson Rat
    Hazard Walcott Gouffran Ramirez Mirallas
    Aguero Carroll

        Select your preferred team formation: 4-4-2, 4-3-3, 5-3-2, 3-5-2 or 4-5-1

4-3-3 looks about the worst formation possible looking at the points on offer.

4-4-2 or 3-5-2 look the best, and I'm currently favouring 3-5-2.

By the looks of it there are more points available for mids that pass alot and can score. Also you can get a reasonable cheap mid who gets bonus like say Lucas. I'm not sure there are that many great cheap striking options there. To match a mid they would have to score a lot and they won't emerge for a little while.

I'm going 3-5-2 at the moment with Lucas in one and Sunderland's Cabral in the other as my cheap def mid tackle and passing bonus options.

I may change though...as I didn't do well in it last year and there are plenty more with good advice on here.

Do not have lucas and cabral, the bonus points are not as easily obtained as you think and dont make that much difference overall. You still need goal scorers!

There were a good 50-60 pts available in bonus to good passing and tackling mids last year. That's 10 goals. There will be a cheap option striker that scores that, but at the moment that is hard to predict. I'm going safety first at the start and then will leap on that cheap/mid priced striker (this year's Holt/Lambert) after a few weeks. At least I know then that the mid will rack up a few pts, whereas a dud striker is 2pts tops.

I prefer 3-5-2 with two expensive forwards and cheap OOP midfielders e.g. Michu was classified as a mid last season and only 6m. As points are rewarded for passes and tackles you need to have 1 defensive minded mid e.g Carrick/Arteta/Yaya in your team aswell. So basically my preferred midfield would be

Def mid, Attacking Mid X2, forwards who are classified as Mids X2

Will be loaned out to West Brom for a couple of seasons before deciding to sell him for an 1/8th of the price imo.

except instead of loaning him out they will keep him on the bench ruin his career and sell him on. ala AOC, Bendtner, Chamkach etc

I'm sure some chap on the Chelsea board was playing U-21 fantasy, hence followed those matches, and watched him play.

Good news for us so far.

Confirmed departures (so far): Arshavin to Zenit, Djourou to Hamburg (loan with option to buy), Mannone to Sunderland, Squillaci, Denilson.

Potential departures: Bendtner is set to move to Eintracht Frankfurt, Coquelin, Campbell and Ryo are being linked with loan moves, Park Chu Young is set to be released and Gervinho, Chamakh & Santos could also be sold.

That frees a lot of money in wages, actually. Feeling good about his window already. 😉

That is good news. Arsenal's problem has been good wages to average squad players.

Anyone know where to find the total scores of the players from the sky game last season? Trying to decide if I should go 4-5-1 with Hazard in MF (8.8m) or 4-4-2 with Berba in attack (8.6m). Was thinking of starting with Hazard then switching to Berbs when Fulham get a kinder run of games.

I know the scoring rules have changed slightly but can't see the pass or tackle extras affecting the totals of either all that much.
