Scout Scribbles – Kompany Targets Quick Return

Manchester City skipper Vincent Kompany hopes to be back from injury in time for Gameweek 4. Christian Benteke, Kenwyne Jones, Hatem Ben Arfa and Everton’s Gerard Deulofeu all shine in the Capital One Cup, while Swansea’s injury woes continue ahead of Sunday’s trip to West Brom:

Kompany Could Return After International Break

Vincent Kompany is penciling in a swift return to action after picking up a groin strain in Manchester City’s 4-0 victory over Newcastle in Gameweek 1. Speaking to the club’s official website, the centre back revealed he hopes to be back after the international break – potentially putting him in contention for September 14’s clash away to Stoke City:

There is a protocol to follow with any injury and there is a time scale that goes with that. If I follow that schedule, I know when I’ll be back in a certain amount of weeks and possibly sooner.

The Scout says: Badly missed during Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Cardiff, Kompany’s return simply cannot come soon enough for the light blue half of Manchester. In his absence, it remains to be seen how City’s rearguard will hold up against Hull City this weekend, though Matija Nastasic is expected to return to the XI alongside Joleon Lescott. Should Kompany’s optimism be justified, then Lescott’s run in the first team could prove short-lived – those considering Lescott as a transfer target for a Chelsea defender or Liverpool’s injured Kolo Toure this week may well be advised to look elsewhere.

Campbell’s Weekend Start Looks Secure

Having seen his side defeat City last Sunday, Malky Mackay made 11 changes as Cardiff travelled to Accrington Stanley. Despite the wholesale alterations, the visitors ran out 2-0 victors but the result was somewhat soured by another ankle injury to Andreas Cornelius after the summer signing was stretchered off just before the break.

The Scout Says: Sidelined for the season opener at West Ham with a similar complaint, the big Dane’s absence has afforded Fraizer Campbell the chance to lead the line as Mackay’s lone forward. While Cornelius was fit enough for the bench last weekend, a lack of match sharpness handed Campbell another opportunity – two goals and an assist against City has already persuaded over 92,000 FPL managers to snap him up ahead of a home clash against Everton. Although the early prognosis suggests it’s no more than a sprain, Mackay has revealed Cornelius is likely to miss the Toffees clash as he awaits further scans. Campbell’s start against Roberto Martinez’ side looks more secure than ever now, with his only real competition potentially set for another spell in the Bluebirds’ treatment room.

Benteke in the Goals Again

Aston Villa bounced back from last Saturday’s narrow home defeat by Liverpool after seeing off Rotherham 3-0 last night. Paul Lambert named a strong side (though left-back Antonio Luna was sidelined with an unspecified injury) and watched on as Christian Benteke grabbed a goal and assist, while Andreas Weimann and Gabby Agbonlahor also maintained their impressive opening form with a goal and assists respectively.

The Scout Says: Having failed to find the net against Brendan Rodgers’ side and with a blank Gameweek this weekend, Benteke has seen more than 57,000 FPL managers jump ship as they freshen up their three-man frontlines for the weekend. The Belgian has quickly shown his weekend display was no more than a temporary blip and has now found the net four times in four first-team games this term – with showdowns against Newcastle, Norwich and Hull in three of the four fixtures from Gameweek 4 onwards, he looks primed for further returns. Those who shed him from their sides could quickly be ruing their decision.

Jones Powers the Potters Through

Kenwyne Jones blasted a hat-trick to ensure that Stoke overcame Capital One Cup opponents Walsall and got their name in the third round draw. Jones was one of eight changes made to the Stoke lineup following their 2-1 win over Crystal Palace. Break Shea and Wilson Palacios made returns from injury and illness in midfield. Oussama Assaidi was also given a 45 minute run-out in his Stoke debut following his recent loan move from Liverpool. Hughes’ praise was reserved for Jones, post-match, however…

“I’m really pleased for Kenwyne because he worked really hard in pre-season and up to now hasn’t had that many opportunities. He acquitted himself really well, put himself about and showed the energy and power that he has. He’s a great guy and we want him to be successful here. He’s got all the attributes but for whatever reason it hasn’t possibly quite happened here as he would have liked. He’s got an opportunity; we’re playing in a slightly different way now and I think that will suit him.”

The Scout Says: Jones’ goals could be timely and will undoubtedly hand Mark Hughes food for thought ahead of the trip to West Ham. Peter Crouch is yet to get off the mark this term and has just 3 goals in his last 32 appearances for the club. Hughes certainly indicates that the door is open for Jones to stake a claim, although Fantasy managers have seen the big striker spurn opportunities for a run of starts in the past. Priced at 5.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL), it remains to be seen if Jones can displace Crouch, although, in all likelihood, Hughes will be looking to strengthen up front before the transfer window closes. Elsewhere, the inclusion of Wilson Palacios indicates that he may now ready to return to the fray. He started ahead of Marc Wilson at Anfield on the opening day but was unable to take his place in the Stoke lineup. The former Spurs man could now replace Wilson in his midfield role for the West Ham trip.

Swansea’s Injury Woes Continue

Swansea will be without a quintet of key players for their second leg Europa League play off tie with Romanian side Petrolul Ploiesti tonight. Captain Ashley Williams and midfielder Jonjo Shelvey are sidelined with knee injuries, while Wilfried Bony will miss out due to an ankle complaint. In addition Nathan Dyer has been unable to travel due to an ongoing hamstring problem and left back Neil Taylor faces up to six weeks out due to severe bruising and swelling to the thigh.

The Scout says: With a 5-1 lead going into the tie, Swans boss Michael Laudrup can certainly afford not to take any chances with the recovery of key players. While it may transpire that many may be nursing no more than niggles, until we hear further from Laudrup it has to be assumed the likes of Williams and Bony are injury doubts going into this weekend’s away clash with West Bromwich Albion. Bony and Shelvey’s absence places further pressure on Michu to deliver against the Baggies’ robust defence.

Deulofeu Shines On Full Everton Debut

Everton’s Spanish teenager Gerard Deulofeu scored on his first full debut as the Toffees edged past Stevenage in the Capital One Cup last night. Deulofeu, who is on loan for a year from Barcelona and scored 18 times for the Barcelona B side last season, grabbed a goal with a left foot finish in the 45th minute. He lasted the full 120 minutes of an encounter which the hosts eventually won 2-1 in extra time thanks to a goal from Marouane Fellaini, who came on in the 96th minute to replace Ross Barkley.

Manager Roberto Martinez used the encounter to rest a raft of first team players with Tony Hibbert playing at right back for 66 minutes, before being replaced by Seamus Coleman. Leighton Baines, who continues to be linked with a move to Manchester United was an unused sub. Sylvain Distin was the other substitute, coming on for Phil Jagielka in the 46th minute. Arouna Kone also played in the place of Jelavic, while both goals were assisted by Steven Naismith.

The Scout Says: Ross Barkley’s Fantasy owners will be hoping his 96 minute stint doesn’t raise any question marks as to whether he will start against Cardiff at the weekend, though Darron Gibson’s continued absence through injury is likely to see him retain his berth against the Bluebirds. In attack Kone hardly put forward a good case to replace Nikica Jelavic as Everton’s centre forward, instead it was Deulofeu who emerged as the standout player in this largely second string side. Although Martinez has said the Spanish winger is unlikely to feature regularly in the first team until 2014, the teenager offered a timely reminder of his talents should Kevin Mirallas continue to misfire. Naismith’s pair of assists, albeit against lower league opposition, will also have been noted by Martinez should he look to reshuffle his first team options.

Hatem Ben Arfa Key To Newcastle Victory

Hatem Ben Arfa grabbed a pair of assists as Newcastle left it late to see off Morecambe in their Capital One Cup tie last night. After being brought on for Yoan Gouffran in the 71st minute Ben Arfa set up Shola Ameobi’s right foot finish and then turned provider again for Sammy Ameobi’s goal in the last 10 minutes of the match. Among Newcastle’s first teamers, Tim Krul was given the night off, David Santon was an unused sub, while Mouusa Sissoko came on for the last few minutes to replace Sylvain Marveaux.

The Scout Says: Before the match manager Alan Pardew said the tie was a chance for this squad players to show him they should be included in his first team thoughts. The failure of players such as Gouffran, Haris Vuckic and Marveuax to break down Morecambe will hardly have impressed him. Ben Arfa will be in buoyant mood after effectively winning the match for Newcastle and may arrive on Fantasy radars ahead of the Magpies’ home game with Fulham this weekend.

Can someone make a convincing argument for selling Aguero to Van Persie in GW 4 for a hit? Thanks in advance

        - plenty of captain choices gw4
        - gw4 good, gw5 away vs aguero

If it's for a hit, I think it can wait until gw6 then.

        I'm doing Agu => Rvp for gw4, but it's not for a hit 🙂

For a hit, doubt it unless you can take advantage of that hit already this week (not meaning Aguero out now..),

Actually Demi... hang onto Aguero, I have a good feeling about him this year!

Ah, you meant specifically that week. Well I think RvP will score at least once against Palace, and that Aguero won't score against Stoke. Add in the inevitable captaincy and you easily make your points back

True, but with a lot of people wildcarding, if he scores well at the weekend he'll be 14.3M by the GW5 deadline. Even if he doesn't score well he might be 14.2 with Palace looming.

This is the worry. But i'm quite surprised that he's still only 14m, and not close to rising so far. Helps that the threshold for a price rise has increased though.

Agree with you below that he's better from gw4-9, just wondering whether he's even better GW 6-9 without a hit

That's a very valid point - over a short time period anything could happen. I would still go for it, because of the price reason and the chance of missing out on bumper points v Palace when 50% + will have captained him. He might blank or not play v Palace, but can you take the risk?

        -Better fixtures.
        -Aguero, rotation threat
-You don't want to watch your own team play from behind the sofa

All good points. I'm in no doubts RvP is the better option, but just having difficulty in planning to get him. Aguero too has a favourable fixture this week. Just a case of avoiding RvP at home to Palace and getting him with less difficulty in GW 6, or taking a hit in GW4

        Rooney. Seriously

I took out Hazard for JWP thinking I would take a hit to get RVP for the Liverpool game.
I have thought about waiting one game week (only having altidore and soldado upfront) and seeing if Rooney does well. If he does I will be taking out Altidore for Rooney in a straight swap, no hits needed and will have a pretty decent front line of Sold, Roon, Tekkers

The thing its all about the right captain. My main rival has 20 pts more than me and hes 20.000 and iam 205.000. Teams are pretty much similar, the only difference was the captain.

Gw1 i got Hazz, he got Ivan.

              if i had a decent team, with 14/15 starters, i wouldn't wildcard.

if you picked some wrong players to start the season and don't even have a playing bench, plus a few rotation/injury concerns...a wildcard wouldn't be a bad idea imo.

Christian Eriksen missed Ajax's training session today. Move to Spurs is imminent.

Vlad Chiriches currently in London for a medical.

Bale's transfer has enabled Tottenham to put together a really strong squad and they're buying very shrewdly (Lamela & Paulinho in particular, but also Chadli & Capoue).

Couldn't really go wrong for £1.25m or whatever it was. Hes a good player but with Bale going then they needed to heavily strengthen their attack, which they have done.

really undecided on my transfer for this week

                mignolet - davis
                collins - coleman - m turner - chester - brayford
                hazard - snodgrass - mirallas - walcott - r morrison
                dzeko - rvp - sturridge

                £0.3 in the bank

the obvious transfer is hazard to silva or maybe even michu but how about hazard to nolan and then the week after snodgrass to lampard?

Two options for me this GW:

                A. Grandin -> Ward-Prowse (and play a 5 man MF, bench Tekkers)

                B. Save transfer (have Toure, Tekkers and Grandin not playing...)

                Here's my squad:

                Migs (Lewis)
                Zabaleta MTurner BTurner (Toure Chester)
                Silva Walcott HBA Miralles (Grandin)
                Aguero(c) Soldado (Tekkers)

                Thoughts guys?

As a United fan i want them to get an easy group.

But from an FPL perspective i want them to get a tough one so RvP is more likely to be rested in the Prem.

Either way United will win the CL 😉

                  Jonty's thoughts

The Scout says: Priced at 4.5 in the FPL, Myhill offers a cheaper route into West Brom’s defensive points and an easy transfer for those who had partnered the 5.0 priced Foster in a defensive pairing with Southampton stopper Artur Boruc. While Daniels proved effective during his short stint in goal against Everton he is likely to remain behind the more experienced Myhill in Clarke’s thinking.

I expect a lot will go for Daniels as he is 4.0 and saves them .5. Then spend hours crying all over the boards here as he still plays second fiddle.
Or worse plays and lets lots in.

If so I will play Turner and bench JRod (who doesn't look like starting)

Also, I feel like I'm the only person that has JRod. Remember seeing loads of preseaon teams with him in, then everyone jumped ship to Anelka.

What is impressive is that Barca approached him at 12. Shows that their scouting is really something extensive and world class, something clubs should be trying to do, rather than hope a local talent will be born, because not every club can be as lucky as those in Argentina, Brazil or Spain. The fact Barca do this even though their local talent is amazing really impresses me

A few thoughts on the merits of using your WC in the international break. I think there are some good and many bad reasons for wildcarding then, my thoughts are as follows:

                1. "I want to WC to play the transfer market and increase TV" - Due to the new pricing system (increased NTI/NTO targets), players will rise in value more slowly, making it less likely that you will get the double rise required to make 0.1 on a player you don't intend to keep. FISO and to a lesser extent TotalFPL haven't cracked the pricing algorithm yet, meaning it can be difficult to predict if a player will actually fall or rise.

                2. "I want to transfer in this season's Michu/Puncheon/In form players" - There aren't many standout players to get in yet. Midfielders in particular have been slow starters. As a result, many people are putting together WC teams with proven prospects from the end of LAST season like Nolan, or talked up preseason players like Mirallas who haven't delivered. There are several solid 8-9.5 forwards, and some decent defenders, but nobody has set the world on fire yet. There isn't much variation between preseason template and current template.

                3. "But last years winner/top 1k used it in GW1/3/4 ..." That may be the case, but it doesn't follow that the same will happen this year. Past results are not an indicator of future performance, and in a year when both player price rises and the BAPs system have undergone significant overhaul, I think it's foolish to think that strategies shouldn't be flexible.

                4. "But I want RVP for palace" - This is a somewhat legitimate reason to wildcard, but is it really going to provide the same points benefit that a -4/-8 and a late season DGW WC will?

                5. "But I want to distribute my TV!" There isn't much in the way of flexible TV in most squads. You'll probably want to keep Migs/Coleman/Silva. Most mid priced strikers have only risen 0.1 so that's no good to you. Shaw/Barkley are the only real options, and you'll only make 0.2 if you have both.

                6. "But my team is a disaster, only one of my defenders will play, and I still have Lukaku/DGW leftovers" - This is a good reason to wildcard.

                Just my 2c.

Point 1 is significant. Rises are slow and making money over that 2 weeks will be hard.

Another reason to WC is if your players start getting injured over the Int break, which may prompt point 6.

How many points you think you can make holding onto the WC for the late season DGW?

Between 10 and 20, I'd say. The late season DGW normally gives plenty of time to plan. Last year my wildcard, saved specifically for this purpose, only saved me 12 points in hits. Those 10-20 points against your rival might be great at the end of the season, however - but put purely in terms of points that's about what it's worth.

I'd say 20. Or that is the price I put on the wildcard so that I will only play it if I want 6 transfers or more. Loses value rapidly at end though.

The thing people sometimes forget about the wildcard is that it has wider points benefits before and after it is played. For the late DGW, non-WC players are planning for the DGW 2 or 3 weeks in advance. If you have a WC you don't need to so can do what is best for those weeks then wipe the slate clean. Finally you have more flexibility with you bench so can put in players just for the last few fixtures and clear out players from teams in no-mans-land.

One point in defence of the TV argument, I see this more as a means of getting a squad that will soon become too expensive those restricted to 1 FT per week. This year I don't know where it would be useful to do this as few stand-out options.

                  2. Getting in form players. There are no form players and, for me, won't be any before October cos it it's too early to determine form after 3 games. Some are buzzing from a good preseason and handy early fixtures so their form is misleading.

Point 1 may or may not be a misconception. Yes, the NTI target has increased - but it is and has always been derived from the total number of players - so more players means higher NTI target, but also higher number of transfers, and these could offset eachother to mean prices will rise at the same rate as they have before.

It's not even close to the ratio it was last season. Yes there are a couple of hundred thousand more teams, but the thresholds are nearly double.

Hence why i say may or may not. The thresholds quote on FISO are 68,000, compared with 38k at the start of last season. But we know that FISO is overestimating, because players have risen in price when FISO says they're between 80-85% of a rise (example Zabaleta). 2 Million players at the start of last season, 2.8 M now - I've lost my calculator but a 40% rise in players should equal a 40% rise in NTI target - which, in ballpark terms can't be far off 85 % of 68,000.

Definitely keeping it for later in the season.
Have one or two players I'm not happy with at the moment, but with injury's form etc I'm sure there'll be a stage later on where I'll have 5/6/7 I'll want rid of.

In all the years I've been playing this game, my ML has been won/lost from before Christmas. For me that means that I need to take a commanding lead from now rather than trail behind and try to make up the deficit after January/February (when you have a free WC anyway).

For that reason, I plan on playing it for GW4, not as much for TV or anything like that, but because my team needs it and I want to have a settled team until Christmas.

                  Great post!

If my team wasn't in a dead league, I'd wildcard after GW3.

I think a strong start is essential when it comes to mini-leagues. Price rises and falls can create a false economy - for example, a team where each individual player has gone up by 0.1 will have a value of 101.5 but the purchasing power of 100.0 - but its useful to get on bandwagons and ship out players that will just lose value.

Contrary to what some people think on here, I feel three gameweeks is enough to see how the teams are shaping up, who seems to be in their managers plans, and how new transfers are looking.

Most of us play in mini-leagues and finishing top in those counts for more than overall ranking. There is an undeniable psychological effect in taking an early lead by playing for the very short term, and then playing safely. The chasing pack often start gambling unnecessarily in an effort to catch up.

The later season double gameweeks are often disastrous, and wildcard-ing leaves your team in a mess for the following fixtures.

The only thing I will add is that it is not just about money-made in terms of TV when on WC, how about the money-saved not having to pay all those extra 0.1ms later? 😉

I am thinking of playing my wildcard this weekend? To early?

With Foster and Toure injured and my midfield just not having performed in the first two weeks?

                  My current team.

                  Boruc
                  Turner - Coleman - Toure
                  Coutinho - Hazard - Mirallas - Dembele
Soldado - Van Persie - Dzeko

                  Foster - Colback - Chester - Parr

Not sure what to do tho, thinking of bringing in a Chelsea Def, Silva, Walcott for Hazard, Toure Cout. Get rid of Mirallas and Dembele also.

Arsène Wenger has revealed the latest team news ahead of Sunday's north London derby against Tottenham:

on Aaron Ramsey and Jack Wilshere…
The news is quite positive. They just had bumps and bruises. They will be involved.

                on Lukas Podolski…
It is bad news about Lukas Podolski as he will be out for eight to 10 weeks. His hamstring is much more damaged than we thought at the start. It is very disappointing and we have paid a very heavy price for that win [over Fenerbahce]. We have to be patient now.

                on the more long-term injuries...
Arteta is doing OK but there are few weeks to go with him. Thomas Vermaelen could be back after the international break.

Surprised the scout have made no mention of Stephen Fletcher making the bench for Sunderland the other night. While the match was being played Sessegnon was charged with drink driving so the fall out with Di Canio for him could be significant.

On top of all this an interview with Di Canio that came out this morning talks up the partnership potential of Fletcher/Altidore so expect that to be tested this weekend for first time (maybe not straight from start though),,,

Good post, I like Fletcher a lot but Sunderland are far from impressing me yet and their fixtures are going down.

Why do people think Ravel Morison is going to start?

It's just pure hope he will. (Probably because he scored in the League Cup)

He had an excellent midweek game. That said, I don't think he'll start.

I think West Ham assistant coach said something along the lines of "the boy is knocking on the manager's door for a starting position"

Thinking ahead for GW4, which option is better?

                A RVP + 5.5
                B Roonpig + 9.0

When I use my wildcard in a few weeks I'm going to call it the Suarez card

What's the general consensus on Hazard here? Transfer out for now?

My consensus is ditch for a FT, not for a hit.

Haven't seen it mentioned over here, but City apparently just bought Demichelis from Madrid for 5m.

Never fancied him, but sound move from Madrid, since they just got him for free from Malaga this transfer period.
