Scout Report – Etienne Capoue

Andre Villas-Boas made his fourth signing of the summer transfer window last week by acquiring Etienne Capoue from French side Toulouse for a fee believed to be in the region of £9m. The versatile midfielder follows Roberto Soldado, Nacer Chadli and Paulinho to the club as Villas-Boas freshens us his first-team squad for his second year in charge at White Hart Lane:

The 25-year-old rejected the offer of guaranteed game time at Cardiff City to move to north London instead and despite the increased competition at his new club, reckons his international chances have taken a turn for the better:

“I decided that I wanted to play in a very attractive league. Because the Premier League is the top league in Europe, I decided that I wanted to go there and Tottenham was an opportunity that I could not refuse. Cardiff would not be a step up in my career. Tottenham allowed me to make that leap, Cardiff did not…I told myself that if I have a good season at Tottenham, I would have my chance to go to the World Cup in Brazil. I had a very good relationship with the president and staff during the transfer market and everyone agreed I should leave.”

The History

A product of the Toulouse youth academy, Capoue has been a one-club man prior to his move to White Hart Lane. Beginning his career back in December 2007, the six foot two defensive midfielder made just five appearances in his breakthrough season before cementing a regular role for the Ligue 1 club during the following campaign.

In his first three full years at Toulouse, Capoue offered little in terms of attacking returns –just three goals and three assists from 102 league matches – but has vastly improved over the last couple of seasons. Over 33 appearances in 2011/12 he produced three goals and five assists and improved once again last time out, with seven goals and an assist in 34 games. On the international stage, he has turned out for his country on 18 occasions and found the net once.

The Prospects

While Capoue is confident of accruing plenty game time over the campaign, there’s plenty of strong competition for the central midfield starting berths at White Hart Lane right now. The departure of Scott Parker, Tom Huddlestone and Jake Livermore may have lessened the load but with Paulinho, Mousa Dembele, Sandro, Gylfi Sigurdsson and Lewis Holtby all vying for contention, the strength in depth suggests rotation could well be on the cards.

At present, the future of Gareth Bale also plays a part in how we assess the situation. If the Welshman departs for Madrid, Villas-Boas’ shopping spree between now and the closure of the transfer window will likely have a major say in his preferred formation over the season. The 4-2-3-1 utilised at Selhurst Park on Sunday would surely restrict Capoue’s game time more than the 4-3-3 system utilised by Villas-Boas at former club Porto. Such a shape could well see the Frenchman sitting alongside Dembele or Sandro, with Paulinho pushing on as the most advanced central midfielder. Capoue’s versatility is likely to be beneficial to his minutes, though; Villas-Boas admitted this played a significant part in his acquisition, with the new boy also offering an option at centre-half in light of the summer departure of both Steven Caulker and William Gallas.

Those looking for a route into Tottenham’s midfield ahead of a strong run of upcoming fixtures will hold fire until the transfer window closes – the potential signing of Willian and/or Erik Lamela will play a significant part in how we assess the Fantasy landscape at the Lane. While a Fantasy Premier League (FPL) price of 6.0 is relatively budget-friendly, there are plenty of similarly-priced options who offer both guaranteed game time and far greater potential of attacking points; Capoue, in all likelihood, looks set to remain firmly off Fantasy radars over the season ahead.

Right now I'd say Silva, because he proved his FPL worth 2 seasons ago, and should do so again under Pellegrini, whereas Navas' goals/assists record in Spain isn't great. That said, I'm keeping a close eye on Navas, because I think he could be a potential assist machine in a City formation where he is the only real wide outlet (along with Zabaleta).

Right at this moment, Silva, but I don't think it's cut and dry.

I do think Lukaku will be given his turn to start, and Torres may replace him later in the game. Torres and Ba have both had there opportunities to impress (with respect, against mediocre opponents) and have both failed to get on the scoresheet. For that reason I'm holding on to Lukaku, I may be wrong though 🙂

Di Maria woud be a very very good signing, and there's a strong chance he will go, looks surplus to requirements at Real with Isco, Ozil, Kaka, Ronaldo, *Bale* etc

Benzema would be a great signing. Giroud will get 15 goals, Benzema will get 20+ easy I reckon.

Repost (and team History link updated),

Depsite a respectable 88, I wildcarded, i couldnt possibly resist....

Think I will keep this lot for 2 GWs, very balanced no real weaknesses, then decide what to do about RVP (ahead of GW4) after the next 2 matches....

              Thoughts on this?

              Boruc,
              Zabaleta, Coleman, Shaw,
              Navas, Walcott, Nolan, Barkley,
              Aguero (C), Benteke, Sturridge,

              Mignolet, Toure, Dawson, Koren,

Last page chaps said they dont like Koren (pens?) or Studge (incred form) or Navas (will be classss), Why? Also, despite the balance of this team.... Am i missing a Dutchman?

Will Snodgrass's yellow flag be removed now? Would help in stopping him falling tonight. Or is there too much doubt to take it off

If he gets his flag removed his NTI gets set back to 0, so no drop will occur.

Heres another post on oor man RvP

Now i keep seeing reliable and reputable posters saying RvP at 14m is too much. Which, in parts i agree with but you've got to take into account one thing - captaincy. Fixtures for United from GW4 up until Christmas are ridiculously kind (ignoring GW5) -

CPL mci WBA sun SOT STO ful ARS car tot EVE NEW avl WHM hul nor TOT SWA

In these 18 Gws (almost half the season) United are at home 10 times. You'd most certainly captain RvP each of these weeks (as well as most of the away ones) and you'd expect United to win and if United win you'd assume RvP will be involved.

RvP is the main man at United (see Rooneys huff) and will play all Uniteds games in the PL, its a bit of a sweeping statement but here are my two reasons why -

              - There was always talk of rotation last year and it didnt happen
              - Moyes is now the manager

Now Moyes is under some amount of pressure to deliver in his first season, if not to win the PL but to certainly be challenging up until the end. This season its all about the PL for United, sure they want a run/stab at the CL and would welcome a cup but Moyes wont want to tire his main main out just to get it. Moyes this season will be judged on his league position and league position alone. Imagine they win both cups and finish 4th would the fans be happy? No. So in my opinion this rules out rotation for RvP.

Now the next thing you are thinking is ahhh but i can get much better midfielders and strikers who will be captains. Sure, maybe but will they be as consistent as RvP at OT? No. Benteke Soldado and even Giroud will be good options but they arent going to get the consistency of RvP IMO. I think captaining anyone from Citys frontline or Chelseas midfield is madness with the risk of rotation in the air.

Right now I dont have RvP but im going to get him in GW4 whether it be a WC or a points hit i just dont want to be left behind. For instance look at GW6 50% of the managers will be sure to captain RvP at home to WBA and the odds are he'll score over 6 points. Who will you captain?

              Soldado (CHE)
              Lambert (CPL)
              Benteke (MCI)
              Berba (CAR)

I know who I'd rather have.

I have RVP and plan on leaving him as captain after 25th Sept. BUT that is because I am going away for 7 months with limited access to the T'Internet. It just the easy choice...

I too am planning to bring RVP in at GW4, but I still have the difficult task of figuring out who I'm going to downgrade.. There's also the additional problem of his price potentially rising which only makes the process more difficult. There's no doubting his consistency though and as a United fan have more than enough trust in the guy

Can't see past Benteke at the moment, he's dazzled me so 😉 Wish I could have Soldado & Benteke, but financially destabilizes my outfit a bit. If Dzeko or Soldado impress over the next 2, then they might play themselves into the reckoning, but City rotation might kick in. Love to keep Soldado, wait and see how he gets on v Swans & Arse before I decide on keeping.

A lot of sense being spoken here. You have articulated perfectly what I've been thinking for weeks.

Yes 14m is a lot, but the man looks fit, fresh, will start 34+ games, will score 20+ goals easy, on pens, corners, FKs both direct and indirect. You can captain him every week.

Scored 2 at Chelsea last year, 1 at Arsenal and 1 at MCY.

Difference for me is that while Benteke may come close to matching RVP for goals, RVP will be picking up more baps just by virtue of Utd winning far more matches than Villa (ie. less bap competition from the other team). There will also be games where RVP picks up a couple of goals and an assist or two on the side (RVP had 15 assists to Teke's 4 assists last year), which is unlikely at Villa because they probably won't be scoring 3+ goals very often.

I'd still expect RVP to outscore Teke by 50 odd points over the season, which is 100 points with captaincy. ~20 points per extra million isn't a bad return, especially out of a forward.

              Good news for JRod owners?

              -------------------------------

Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino says he is committed to promoting young English talent at the club.

A national newspaper study on Monday revealed the opening weekend of the Premier League reached an all-time low in terms of Englishman starting games.

Saints fielded four players against West Brom at the weekend from their famed academy, while eight of their matchday squad were English.

I don't think it necessarily relates specifically to JRod. If Pochettino feels he has better options, he'll play them regardless of nationality and regardless of what he says in the press.

That being said, JRod's a great little player and I'd expect Pochettino would adapt the system if necessary to fit him in. He should have a place in the side on merit.

It´s a dangerous game for your mind when u start to justify hits too often, IMO

You never know what happens next week, injuries or a "bandwagon" that could make you do another transfer, or possibly one more hit..

It´s not that bad to take o hit once in a while, just not too often
