This Much We Know – Gameweek Three

Rotation season is declared open at the Etihad. United and Spurs are in need of craft as they huff and puff in a bid to feed expert marksman, while two leading contenders in the sack race enjoy contrasting starts to the campaign. Here’s some lesson’s learned from Gameweek 3…

Pellegrini’s rotation is about to kick-in…
Alvaro Negredo’s second-half goal was a major blow to both Hull City and Edin Dzeko, sat on the City bench. Replaced at half-time by the prolific Spaniard, Dzeko will realise that, despite impressing in pre-season and the opening matches of the campaign, his role at City is about to revert to the familiar. It seems likely we’ll see Negredo start in the Gameweek 4 trip to Stoke and, while Pellegrini has insisted that he needs both his “big strikers”, the popular thinking is that Negredo will eventually emerge as first choice. Dzeko’s knack for finding the net will always be a factor though – enough to perturb any switch of allegiance to Negredo amongst the ranks of Fantasy managers. With Stevan Jovetic also fit and taking his place on the bench, owners of Sergio Aguero will also be pondering how the Argentine will be affected by the influx of options available to Pellegrini in attacking areas. Jovetic clearly has a role to play – it remains to be seen if that impacts on Aguero, David Silva or Jesus Navas. We don’t have all the answers yet, but we do certainly have question marks hanging over every City teamsheet from now on – Pellegrini’s post-match confirmation of his intentions to rotate compounds the quandary many City owners are set to face.

Yaya is a confirmed free-kick expert…
A superb, but almost academic strike in the 4-0 drubbing of Newcastle raise a few eyebrows. This was followed on Saturday but a similar deadball conversion that finally killed off a determined Hull performance and confirmed Yaya Toure as a free-kick specialist. He has never been considered when it comes to City deadball’s until now but, clearly, on his showings so far, we need to reassess. It’s brought him two goals in the opening three league outings, put him at the top of the FPL midfielder rankings and sparked a revival of interest in the Ivorian that has fetched him a host of new suitors. Owners of David Silva, meanwhile, will be somewhat frustrated not only that their man appears to have dropped on the pecking order when it comes to direct free-kicks. Toure has seen almost 55,000 new owners in the Gameweek, while Silva is currently suffering a deficit of over 8000 following his 66 minute blank against the Tigers.

Sunderland are already troubled…
Paolo Di Canio’s targeted outbursts will surely have done little for morale in the Black Cats’ camp following the 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. While the criticism was perhaps justified, we can only speculate on the impact of the public airing of his views on players such as John O’Shea, the skipper and a figure who is surely pivotal in their campaign. A point at Southampton in Gameweek 2 perhaps papered over the cracks that were already appearing. At Selhurst Park, those faults began to widen and with a fixture list that shows Arsenal, Liverpool and United all paying visit to the Stadium of Light in the next four Gameweeks, Di Canio has a huge task ahead of him in front of his own fans. Steven Fletcher’s return to fitness and the scoresheet was a bright spot but if Sunderland are not in the bottom three by the time October ends, Di Canio would have defied the odds and his critics.

Stoke are a different animal…
Mark Hughes was another manager fighting off an array of pre-season critics ready to declare him a leading contender in the “sack race”. Three games in and the performances of his Stoke side have so far drowned out those views and instead allowed others to declare that Hughes is transforming the Potters, little by little.

The numbers certainly support a shift in strategy. Stoke have made 968 passes so far, completing 79%. At that same stage last season, they had made 732 under Tony Pulis with a woeful completion rate of 66%. It’s perhaps going to far to declare a “transformation” but there’s little doubt that Hughes has worked to instill new methods. While the change will surely be welcomed by the Stoke faithful, there were perhaps doubts that it would translate into results. Saturday’s win at Upton Park offered reassurance that, under Hughes, Stoke could find a way of being at ease with the ball whilst relying on their muscular resolve at the back to win matches. While Fantasy managers are unlikely to generate any major bandwagons running out of the Britannia anytime soon, it seems we do need to scrap our previous perception of Stoke and be ready to adapt our thinking to the changes taking place under Hughes.

United are lacking ideas…
Wayne Rooney’s absence from Sunday’s Anfield encounter was made all the more obvious by United’s inability to create and carve out opportunities against a resolute Liverpool backline. Having fed on scraps in Monday’s war of attrition with Chelsea, Robin van Persie again had little service and was forced to drop deep and create or try his luck with half chances. While both Chelsea and Liverpool were likely to limit United’s goal output, the alarm bells must be ringing, not just amongst van Persie’s Fantasy owners but also in the United camp as they struggle to find a spark. David Moyes needs Rooney back on the pitch. Regardless, with just hours remaining before the transfer window closes, United will surely be in a frenzied state of activity as they look to acquire some new midfield talent.

Tottenham are a work in progress…
With Gareth Bale’s departure now confirmed and the millions spent on the likes of Erik Lamela and Christian Eriksen, it’s fair to say that this is a time of transition down at the Lane. While there is understandable excitement, it’s clear from Sunday’s performance that Andre Villas-Boas has work to do before his side can be expected to perform as an efficient unit, capable of challenging the top four. Fantasy managers saw Spurs struggle to create against the Gunners, relying on a desperate climax to the North London derby to rattle Arsene Wenger’s defence. Robeto Soldado was largely isolated throughout, like Van Persie for United, his supply is not forthcoming and it’s stifling the opportunities that come his way. With both Lamela and Eriksen brimming with creativity, Soldado and Spurs fans will be anticipating that a change is on its way in the coming weeks. Fantasy managers will be watching and waiting.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Wait a while on moses, IMO. He may not play for a while, nobody can say.

if you really think rvp is the future, go for it. there is no science to it. He may play 60 min and come off after 2 goals. He plays for a team in flux... I'm not sold, even if he does score twice.

I wanted Ben Arfa this week but couldn't bring myself to put a mag in my team. Opted for Nolan instead and that turned out a shite move. Lampard won't start every game but over the course of the season I think he's a great pick.

I am worried about Lamps rotation with Luiz back and CL starting very soon.

Slightly leaning towards HBA now, but I'll probably change my mind 100 of times before actually doimg anything

Warning - this is a long post but some of you out there might find it interesting…

I’ve been forced into using my WC this week and have been trying to work out the merits of investing more heavily in defence given the way in which bps are now dished out. Analysing the 30 games to date provides some surprising evidence that has tempted me to spend big at the back.

In the 30 games so far, 9 have involved both sides scoring (average 7bps per game), 17 games in which 1 side has kept a clean sheet (average 6.58 bps per game), and 4 games that have been goal-less (9.75 bps per game).

Analysing bps allocations in the 9 games in which both teams have scored shows that goal scorers have dominated the bps (not surprisingly). In these games, 63 bps have been awarded and 51 of these have gone to goal scorers (10 x 3bps; 9 x 2bps; 3 x 1bp).

This means that only 12 bps have gone to other players in these games, distributed as follows:

    Goal and assist – 1 x 1bp (Whittaker, Eve 2 – 2 Nor)
    2 assists – 1 x 1bp (Rooney, Swa 1 – 4 Man Utd)
    Assist - 3 x 2bp; 1x 1bp
    Defender - 3 x 1bp (including Clark and Szczesny, Arsenal 1 – Villa 3)

Conclusion – in games where both teams score, goal-scorers dominate the bps. It is unusual that players that only provide an assist will be rewarded.

In the 17 games where 1 team has kept a clean sheet, defenders heavily outweigh goal scorers for bps. A total of 112 bps have been allocated in these games – goal scorers account for 38 of these (7 x 3bps; 7 x 2bps; 3 x 1bp), with defenders taking 59 (7 x 3bps; 11 x 2bps; 16 x 1bp). The remaining 15 bps have been distributed as follows:

    Goal and assist – 1 x 3bps; 1 x 2bps
    Goal and clean sheet – 1 x 3bps
    Assist – 2 x 2bps
    Clean sheet and assist – 2 x 3bps; 1 x 1bp

Conclusion – in games that end 1-0 or 2-0, defenders have a significantly greater chance of receiving bonus points than goal scorers (particularly if they have provided an assist). Players that provide only an assist in a game that ends 1-0 or 2-0 are unlikely to be rewarded.

In the remaining 4 games that have ended 0-0, there have been a huge 39 bps rewarded (9.75 per game). In these games, defenders have received 8 x 3bps; 6 x 2bps; and 3 x 1bp.

Final conclusions – I will be investing more heavily in defence and up-front than in midfield this year, a break from previous seasons. Midfielders have so far only been rewarded for their goal-scoring exploits, seeing assists go unrewarded. The trend so far has seen 1-0 or 2-0 wins rewarding defenders, often even at the expense of the player that has scored the winning goal. Additionally, goalless draws are seeing far more bps allocated, giving my defenders a greater chance of sharing the spoils.

    Discuss!

Exactly - I think I'll be going for players like Brady as he's on penalties and then getting 1 or 2 big-hitters in the midfield that are proven goal scorers e.g. Walcott and Lampard. The defenders at the big 5 or 6 clubs also seem far more nailed on than attacking midfield

Thanks for the post -- +1 for the legwork, to be sure. While these stats are intriguing, another question might be: how often do matches in certain results? The 3 weeks of this season are a small sample size, but the data on the last few years might be helpful to really crack the BPS code. Not saying it's easy to get, just cautioning that the conclusion needs more support.

Agree that it's a small sample size, especially as there's not been many big 3-0 / 4-0 wins yet. I reckon there'll be far more games that end in both teams scoring as the season goes on...I just think there's more value in defenders than there has been in previous seasons

Defenders are definitely more valuable this year as your analysis shows.

I don't think we should get too carried away with these extra points for defenders though... This week there were 9 games and 9 clean sheets. A lot of low scoring games, so this clearly helped defenders.

Even if FPL was still using last year's bonus system, defenders and keepers would still be doing very well at this stage of the season. But 3 weeks isn't a long time... There will definitely be a lot more points coming from midfielders later in the year.

I think a CS is worth a good 5 points on average for a defender this year. Possibly even more for players like Mertesacker, Vertonghen and Baines.

Agree with you that there will be far less clean-sheets as the season goes on. The reason I'll be investing in a good 4 at the back is because I think they'll be rewarded much more for a CS this season. If Mourinhio can get Chelsea conceding >20 goals a season again then I think we'll see Terry / Ivan regularly getting 8-9 points

But do you really think that we are going to see more of the same?
Is not 25 cs from 30 games a lot?
There isn't an (attacking) midfielder with more than 1 goal in 3 games (Yaya the only one!)...surely that will change.
I think its too early to WC purely on this statement.

By the way, whats the priority around this parts: Mirallas or Dzeko to go?

Great post! I very much agree with you!

Why do you exclude Liverpool defender, f.ex. J Enrique? He is good value, excellent form, excellent fixtures, and improved defence (including keeper) this season.

      Why the love for Coleman?

Why Vidic just yet? They have not demonstrated good defence form just yet, and Vidic is a bit injury prone, as well as not being a regular attacking value.

        Szcezny - not good enough
Mertesacker/Kos - OK but no cover for them at all.
        Gibbs/Monreal - OK
Sagna - average, Jenkinson should get a game.

oh and they have no defensive midfielder at all in squad!

They don't play with defensive midfielders. United won the league last season with no 'defensive midfielders'.

Ramsey, Arteta, Wilshere, Flamini in CM is enough.

Anybody know why did we buy Schurrle & Willian in the 1st place?

I'll be really very disappointed if Chelsea says goodbye to Mata. He's an ambassador for us & if any other people (other than fans) don't hate Chelsea then the reason would be the presence of gentleman like Mata. All we wanted is a proper Striker & not MIDs. It's not even like he's getting Old or lost the form. (Chelsea player of the season last year for feck sake)

It is ridulous how we are left with no strikers of note other than an unproven one (at top level) in Lukaku. I really thought jose would get rid of Ba and Torres and bring in a big name centre fwd signing!

Fingers crossed that Etoo is somewhere near to the player he used to be but I seriously doubt this will be the case!

Among the more intriguing possible moves is, for me, Baines to MU. If this happens, is it +, -, or neutral in FPL terms?

-s: No pens, fewer free-kicks, more cop for game time (Evra)

+s: More CSs potential, those multitude of crosses get better conversion rates from better strikers

Considering a pen/CS are worth roughly the same points-wise, 6-7 more CS potential (my estimate) at MU, against likely 32-4 pens i a ave season, so MU switch tips slightly in favour for FPL, but close.

    You agree?
