FFS UEFA Beach Soccer Tournament 2013

Gameweek 8 sees the launch of the latest team competition for the Fantasy Football Scout community organised by FFS UEFA. Following the success of last season’s ICC-themed cricket tournament, the group have created FFS Beach Soccer World Cup 2013, with 16 teams, each comprised of 11 players, competing for the crown.

If you’re new to the concept and are wondering just what all the chatter has been about, here’s a link to their site which will help explain matters in a little more detail.

Essentially, the scoring is based around the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game.

Each team started scouting for players (ie, FPL managers) on Sunday, October 6 and the recruitment period will come to a close on Wednesday, October 16, with the roster of team players announced on Thursday, October 17.

The teams are led by a captain and vice-captain and guided by a manager, who decide which seven of their 11 players to field each week – depending on the perceived prospects of their FPL line-ups -and which four to bench. Their overall FPL scores for the Gameweek, with hits taken into account, will form the team’s score that week – by outscoring their opponents, they chalk up a win.

The first match in Gameweek 8 will be no more than a friendly before the main event gets underway the following weekend. This sees the 16 teams compete in four groups of four between Gameweek 9 and 11 – the top two teams from each group will progress to the knockout stages, where sides square up in a head-to-head elimination process from Gameweek 12 until the final in Gameweek 15.   I think a lot of credit goes to the original idea (the icc one which is ENR's brainchild). After which, both ENR and me just ironed out the other details - groups, fixtures, rules and that kinda crap. I just helped out on the tech front but 70% of it was reusing the icc code to be fair.
  
  What you guys often underestimate is your own presence and how vital it is to the competition. If there was no banter, team threads, rival talk, and you could have all the user interface, and new format rules in the world, but it wouldn't be half as interesting.
  
  For me, it boils down to the the banter, team spirit, which keeps this competition alive and give it it's true spirit and meaning.

It's been a lot of fun and I wish everyone the best of luck going forwards.

Thanks to out superb Gaffer Sheikh Emir HOH and Captain Binji and all the lads.

We may walk away with a wooden spoon but with good memories and new found friends from amongst the squad and beyond.

*Setting the scene*

As the sun sinks into the shadowed horizon, the sky is set ablaze with an array of fiery red and flaming orange clouds that paint this scene in such wonderous colours.

The faint glimmer of dying light endeavours one last time to pierce through and touch ones onlooking gaze, quite a sight to behold in itself, yet further magnified by the cool still blue sapphire ocean.

On what was a truly glorious day on the sparkling white sands of Tahiti's finest stadium, Tahua To'ata in Papeete, Brazil had finally arrived.

And with such style.

The man at the helm, now with the world of Beach Soccer at his feet, Zepinho, whose 'masterplan' remains as mysterious and mystifying as the very night sky that surrounds us, slips into his chair to speak to me as the last remaining embers of sunlight melt into the now dark ocean floor.

Reporter - Zepinho, can you sum up for me just how you are feeling right now?

Zepinho - (takes a deep breathe and swallows in preparation for speech)... Well, the magnitude of what has just happened here is starting to hit home, and it is slightly overwhelming, I'm completely awestruck by what I saw out there today from my lads, an absolutely phenomenal achievement for Team Brazil, there are not enough superlatives in this world to describe just how well they played today.

Every single member of this team has shown me, right from the very start, an unwavering commitment to the cause; a compelling strength of union; a real 'for the team' ethos.

Such character they have shown to come back from that initial loss in the opening game v Iran, to beat Ukraine, the Mods, the modest masters of FFS. I am proud to be riding the waves of success with them, I am standing on the shoulders of these unsung heroes, they are all Brazilian giants in my book.

And let's not forgot our ever gracious opponents in the final round of matches, the mighty Senegoal, an all-star international cast of superstars who hardly set a foot wrong in the whole tournament, indeed they finished as top scorers over the course of the whole group stage. I'd like to personally thank each and every one of them; Evs, Canadian Football, Epic Fail, Champ, Acqua, LateRiser, (Beric, Snake Juice, TommyTour, Forca) and especially Christina, my managerial counterpart. Well played guys. Thank you.

You guys fought for every inch out there today, you showed remarkable determination and majestic skill in all areas of the field right until the final whistle, thank you again for being part of this most memorable of days in the Beach Soccer World Cup.

Reporter - Thank you very much for such a thorough summary of events of the last few weeks through your eyes... now can you give us a little insight into your preparations for the first knockout round v Paraguay?

Zepinho - Yeah sure, well firstly the guys are going to take a well earned break this week. We will regroup sometime in the next 10 days or so to begin a detailed analysis of starting strategies. I can't reveal too much else, I'm afraid.

Zepinho - Thank you, we will, we'll be celebrating long and hard into the night, Brazilian style baby!

Hey guys. I was just interviewed on El Salvadoran television following our recent match! Of course the interview was in Spanish, and my Spanish isn't too good, but I'm pretty sure 'Solomons' in Spanish is 'Barney,' and 'Stinson' means 'Islands.' Check it out here:

Thanks to the Council for running this Competition. Netherlands gave it our best shot and in a closely fought group, but sadly it was not quite enough. Still, we've had a blast playing and made some new friends through it all.

Good luck to those still involved - especially Solomon Islands and El Salvador, who got through our group - I hope one of you can win it!!
