Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Tuesday

The festive schedule starts to kick in now as we brace ourselves for the first of six sets of fixtures this month. Gameweek 14 gets underway this evening with Tony Pulis’ first home match in charge of Crystal Palace as Sam Allardyce’s Hammers roll up to Selhurst Park:

The new Eagles manager has a tough task on his hands – his side have scored just once in the last five Gameweeks, courtesy of our “Spot the Differential” pick Barry Bannan, though one goal against in the previous three signifies their recent resilience at the back.

Big Sam’s side roll up on the back of a 3-0 home thrashing of Fulham last weekend, which ultimately led to the dismissal of Martin Jol. Having failed to score in four of their six road trips, though, there is a fear tonight’s game has 0-0 written all over it – a result that would send the viewing public to sleep, perhaps, but one that would be widely accepted around these parts, with many anticipating clean sheet returns.

The team news is now in and sees the home side unchanged from Saturday’s trip to Norwich, with Cameron Jerome up top alongside Marouane Chamakh. West Ham make four alterations from the weekend, with Joey O’Brien, Razvan Rat, Ravel Morrison and Carlton Cole replacing Guy Demel, George McCartney, Matt Jarvis and Modibo Maiga.

As always on Matchdays, we’ve opened up our Dugout Discussion chatroom right up until the final whistle for those looking to get involved in a spot of real-time banter.

Just done a bit of research into CPL defenders and it seems like Paddy McCarthy (who has been injured for 18 months) is their club captain and a CB. It seems like he's recovered from his injuries and is just lacking match fitness ATM, but possibly his return will make Ward a better, safer option than Gabbidon? I'm not a Palace fan but McCarthy played over 40 games in the Championship in both the 2010/11 and 2011/12 seasons (he was injured all of last season), so POSSIBLY makes Gabbidon a rotation risk. Of course he could replace Delaney or not get back into the starting 11 at all, but I'd much rather have Ward who is as nailed on as it gets.

Parr played a lot of games at LB last season so could possibly force his way back in when 100% fit. Iirc Palace signed a RB as cover for Ward over the summer but he broke his leg or something so Ward seems the safest.

All theoretical though, I think all of Ward/Moxey/Gabbidon are reasonably safe.

Think Moxey might get a bit less bonus.

A player injured for 18 months isn't going to be a threat to Gabbidon, that's over-thinking it.

Go for Gabbidon anyway, as CBs more likely for bonus (and I have Ward)

18 month injury is incredibly long, lacking match fitness is one thing but he's been supposedly "nearing" a return for over 2 months. Not to say he won't come back but if Pulis develops a system using Gabbidon for a significant period of time he's not likely to lose him once he's back. Delaney I would have thought was more at risk.

delaney is more at risk but I expect pulis to add to his defence in Jan so any of those could be at risk. Most likely delaney.

In the last 4 GWs he's been a whisker off an assist in each game; a combination of poor finishing by Sess, Long, and Long nicking an assist from one of his crosses with a controversial did he touch it moment took them away.

Going to have 2FTs before the weekend game, don't think I've got anything major to change so might just use 1 to shift Baker and save the other. Would you say that's the right thing to do with my team?

      Speroni
      Kos - Evans - Burner
      Walcott - Hazard - Sess - Jedinak
      Suarez (c) - Rooney - Aguero

      Krul - MOlsson - Baker - Ravel

      2FT, 0.2 in the bank

£1, a good time for the FA to stamp their authority down, with their new rule which they have just implemented (£1 is about £20 in non-tight fisted terms)

Yep I agree. Promoted teams also seem to use many different CB combinations throughout the season (usually due to a lack of clean sheets), so if Palace get in another slump I can see Gabbidon getting rotated or 'rested'.

      Guys,

I need some help with this shower of Sh*te !! - 1 FT and 2.6 in the bank, happy to take a -4 somewhere if it's worth while, thinking there is no point bothering with Boruc, will take the loss on him but with my bench shot with bans or non starters I think I need to do something here, all opinions welcomed!

      Cheers as always

1 goal conceded in 4 games and their defensive stats leading into this GW since Holloway left were pretty impressive given their prices.
