Dugout Discussion

The Dugout Discussion – Tuesday

The festive schedule starts to kick in now as we brace ourselves for the first of six sets of fixtures this month. Gameweek 14 gets underway this evening with Tony Pulis’ first home match in charge of Crystal Palace as Sam Allardyce’s Hammers roll up to Selhurst Park:

The new Eagles manager has a tough task on his hands – his side have scored just once in the last five Gameweeks, courtesy of our “Spot the Differential” pick Barry Bannan, though one goal against in the previous three signifies their recent resilience at the back.

Big Sam’s side roll up on the back of a 3-0 home thrashing of Fulham last weekend, which ultimately led to the dismissal of Martin Jol. Having failed to score in four of their six road trips, though, there is a fear tonight’s game has 0-0 written all over it – a result that would send the viewing public to sleep, perhaps, but one that would be widely accepted around these parts, with many anticipating clean sheet returns.

The team news is now in and sees the home side unchanged from Saturday’s trip to Norwich, with Cameron Jerome up top alongside Marouane Chamakh. West Ham make four alterations from the weekend, with Joey O’Brien, Razvan Rat, Ravel Morrison and Carlton Cole replacing Guy Demel, George McCartney, Matt Jarvis and Modibo Maiga.

As always on Matchdays, we’ve opened up our Dugout Discussion chatroom right up until the final whistle for those looking to get involved in a spot of real-time banter.

      Massively 🙁

Reid is a bigger miss for us than Carroll. At least with Winston we regularly kept clean sheets and could scrape a point.

I'm planning to do a West Ham write up again later today, bit too fed up at the moment!

Great example last night of bonus points system not working. A total of 15 points were given out rather than 6. Had Palace not scored then I suspect a few West Ham defenders would have also picked up bonus.

Personally, I don't think there is a big problem with the BPS. The scoring is an improvement on the EA Sports PPI (ESP), in that it using more accurate data (OPTA) and it's doesn't hugely penalise the most innocuous of events such as shots off target.

What are peoples thoughts on how it can be improved with the current BPS?

    My ideas are:

    1) Increase the scoring thereby creating a greater disparity of points and making it less likely that there will be ties.
    2) Only award bonus points when the BPS reaches a threshold. Looking at the current trend, 9 BPS would be a good cut off.

They awarded 7 people bonus G , it's like confetti at a weeding.
For me it's diluting what should be sacred ie 3 people only
      3
      2
      1
      End of
The man in the stand should award on who the best players / contributors to the game are and using stats also to give a combined result .

Sorry, this is a total load of bollocks imo. Current system is great - it's pretty traceable & the onus is on managers to do their homework & adapt to it, rather than pine for the "good old days" with rose tinted glasses on. Man in the stand was a much worse system imho.

-1 , for me Bonus should be sacrosanct , if they want to award more for a cs why not just increase it to 5pts altogether cause this is the way it's going.
I think it should be more select and confined to just 3 people at most , the Sky game and others work on a man of the match system where 1 player gets awarded a bonus only - I'd prefer this but I accept we are all playing on the same pitch but this is my opinion
          - I don't like it.

      I like both of those.

Another way could be to limit it to three players and use a priority system for tie-breaks on the BPS. e.g. in the event of a tie, goals are most important, followed by assists, followed by clearances etc etc

From what I can gather one of the main points of the new BPS is that it generates more points. More points pleases more managers and therefore helps the game attract more interest and keep existing managers interested. Last night if anything was a victory for the BPS in that lots of managers got lots of points. Its a rare event that seven will tie on the same amount.

They could tweak it to give more points as in 1) but the same anomoly could occur. They could raise shots on target for example and all could by coincidence have the same shots on target.

On point 2) I If in a game like last night no one reaches it well then no one is deserving of bonus...but that's a big call to say sorry guys no bonus today, even though Sky have given a man of the match. Can't see that going down well.

So what you are saying is never reward defenders as they very rarely get above 9pts without attacking points. Well thats just silly, I want a system that rewards the unrewarded players. Personally I think they should take goals and assists out of the bonus points stats as players already get enough points for those anyway.

Agreed..players are already rewarded for the goal and/or assist...it's daft to reward it a second time, it was why RVP was such a great pick last season..he got 3 Baps almost every time he scored..may as well have made it nine points for a goal.

I like the new system better than the old one, i'm not sure why the award of multiple baps causes such concern, the more the merrier for me.... I would give BAPS when any player reaches a certain threshold...so for arguments sake...1 BAP for 6BPS...2 BAPS when a player reaches 8BPS and the 3BAPS when they reach 10BPS..so in effect rewarding any player who plays well, and if that means the entire team when they win six nil then so be it. Under the old system the rewards for poor play in a poor game were exactly the same as the rewards for open exciting football, that was just rubbish. Of course defensive BPS would need to be carefully thought out but i'm sure that would be easy enough.

I don't mind it how it is, apart from the possibility of 15 BPs in one game, which is a bit daft. I think the combination of BPS and ESP would be better, so if the BPS are tied then go to EPS as a tie-breaker. This would mean the vast majority of games should have a simple 3-2-1 split, but on the odd occasion that you can't separate players, then you don't have to.

It's not perfect, but it's way better than last season & it's transparent. Last night's bps were uncommon. If anything, they should reduce bps for assists and goals as they are already rewarded quite handsomely. More often than not, a goal in a 1-0 results in 4+3 for the scorer, so a goal is often effectively 7pts. I like the system today. But then I had Gabbidon 😉

      Definitely 1.

If players are tied, like they were in this game, how do you decide which of the tied players gets the points first, and who missed out (i.e. there has to be some kind of ranking involved).

Or, maybe if you have a cap (let's say 9 as suggested), then if allocating the points to tied players would result in the total exceeding the threshold, then none are awarded. So for this game, only Chamakh would've got bonus points (3), the others would have totally missed out because another 12 points would have to allocated, taking it over the threshold.

If we're sticking with BPS, how about bonus points are awarded based on BPS thresholds?

Anyone scoring over 8 BPS gets 1 bonus point
Anyone scoring over 15 BPS gets 2 bonus points
Anyone scoring over 20 BPS gets 3 bonus points

      (Or similar)

It would level things out across all games though - currently, if a player gets 16 BPS in a high scoring win they can walk away with no bonus whilst players scoring 7 BPS in another game get bonus galore.

I think the best option is 1. Add a few more stats to the mix or make it easier for players to get BPS, then as Granville said, there will be fewer ties.

At the moment you get 1 BPS for every 8 clearances. If this was 1 BPS for every 3 clearances for example, two players on 9 clearances and 15 clearances would then get 3 and 5 BPS respectively. Instead of just 1BPS each under the old system.

I like the idea of using a tie-breaking system such as ESP so that each match is only awarded one 3 BPs, one 2 BPs and one 1 BP. I also like Wakey's idea of awarding BPs according to BPS thresholds.

I used to feel very strongly (and said so a number of times in the past) that it was ridiculous that the most boring matches were the ones that got awarded the greatest number of bonus points. But another way of looking at it is that this does at least reward defenders, who used to be get too few points for their efforts in the past.

Threshold is a good idea, a bonus should only be given for good performances.

Bringing back the man in the stands, as some people here suggests, is a terrible idea. That takes us back 4-5 seasons when the bonus points were so predictable, they were just added incentive to get certain players, which reflected in their price.

Football is about a lot more than stats, but fantasy football is a statistic driven game, like it or not. You have to make points scoring measureable (which the current bonus point allocation methodology does much better than any previous bonus point award systems), otherwise the thing just descends into chaos.

For what it's worth I think there are benefits to having the points spread more evenly across the positions. Previously I was always a follower of the cheapy defence, spend elsewhere tactic. This season it makes sense to set aside a higher budget for defenders and that opens up further tactical decisions and tough choices. However the actual system does feel arbitrary and sometimes slightly farcical.

Liverpool are off form and Norwich have found some form. Can't see anything like 6-0.

        Probably 3-1.

Are they off form though? They scored 7 goals in the 2 games before Hull and after watching the highlights of CPL and Norwich, Norwich were very fortunate to keep it below 2 goals let alone keep a clean sheet.

Rodgers will have laid into them on the training ground the last couple of days - there will be a backlash against Norwich. If Suarez has his shooting boots on it could get ugly for Nrowich

I'm looking forward to tonights game. In paticular i'm going to be watching out for AVB's genius strategy to solve Soldado's goal drought. Putting Paulinho, who can't score to save his life at the moment, up front with Soldado, who can't score to save his life at the moment, really is desperate measures....

The idea is since Paulinho shoots all the time from 30 yards out, if he is a bit closer he might hit the target more.

Just a bit tongue in cheek. AVB has said he needs to get the ball into Soldado quicker (a dig at Townsends daft dribbling ?) and that's the reason. I hope they unlock the door and start notching. It would add a lot to the FPL game at the moment if Spurs became viable and give us all other "options" away from the the developng template/s

Is John Terry worth spending the 6.5 (nearly 6.6) on ?
It seems a lot of the top 10 have him and obviously he's 2nd in def rankings ,
In reality we have no problem spending around 6.5 on Cabaye / Sess etc and they can be frustrating to own to say the least and the way the current points (baps) is set up a 1-0 victory from team seems to be awarding your
defender 6/7/8 points which you you gladly take from your mid bracket mf on a given week ,
    Eg Terry 68 pts (6.5) / Mert 59 (5.9) / Lovern 62 (5.8)
    Mirallas 53 pts (7.3) / Cabaye 55 pts (6.5) / Sess 38 pts (6.6)
There are plenty more eg but it seems to me there is more Ppg available if you select the right def over your mf in a similar price bracket .
so is it a case this season of bring prepared to spend a little more on a defender than on midfielders ?

Ivanovic has become the runt of the litter, despite being most nailed on recently. He's always 3-4 BPS behind in games and is not scoring anything other than the odd CS. It's like you say you need to be more particular about which def you get for cover.

The FA have changed their rules since Nov 22...they can now do retrospective bans for violent behaviour. Under the old rules if it's been seen by the ref and yellow is awarded that's it. The FA could call this one in and give him a three match one or even more.

Hmm i would think a two fisted shove right at the jaw/throat area of an opposing player off the ball is more of a violent action than a little kick out while 2 players chasing a ball (Rooney)

As SAF would say "he could have killed the guy!"

I must say there have been far more violent actions this year which have gone unpunished but push and shove in this case is simply a minor matter of disagreement. It can barely be deemed as a fight let alone violent conduct. I think its being blown way out of proportion because of how upset Ravel was.

Still think that falls under violent conduct under the rule books. If that happened during the game with all eyes on the players and the crowd into it, ravel could very well have been sent off.

That being said I agree there have been many instances this season that should have been red card offenses. I've just seen another attempted stamp by mirallas on Suarez during the same game. He should have really been sent off.

One of these instances will be punished by the FA just to make an example of them imo. There have been far too many talking points this season. Esp of late - mirallas vertonghen Rooney and now ravel. Someone will be slapped.
