Scout Scribbles – Van Persie On Road to Recovery

Robin van Persie steps up his rehabilitation from a knee injury. Arsenal have a number of doubts for tonight’s clash with West Ham, who are sweating over the fitness of Kevin Nolan. Elsewhere, Alan Pardew explains his recent formation change and Mark Hughes heaps praise on Stoke’s in-form Marko Arnautovic:

Van Persie Edges Nearer Comeback

The United forward posted a video update on his progress from a knee injury on his official Facebook page to suggest he could be poised to return before the end of the season.

The Scout Says: After returning from injury back in January, Van Persie racked up four goals and an assist in seven league appearances and also fired a Champions League hat-trick against Olympiacos. Stretchered off towards the end of the 3-0 win over the Greek outfit, he was pencilled in for a return to action at the end of April – coinciding with a very favourable couple of weeks for David Moyes’ side. A Gameweek 36 home clash against Norwich is followed by the visit of Sunderland and Hull in Gameweek 37, and with Wayne Rooney still struggling due to a toe problem, the Dutchman’s potential return could prove timely for both United and Fantasy managers if his rehabilitation keeps on schedule.

Gunners’ Injury Concerns Rise

Arsene Wenger had much to discuss on the injury front during yesterday’s pre-match conference. The Arsenal boss conceded he has a number of worries for tonight’s home clash with West Ham, including a certain Welsh midfielder:

“We have plenty of uncertainties for muscular problems and fatigue. Who could be available who was not in the squad on Saturday? Maybe Rosicky and Koscielny – we’ll have to test him definitely today. The main uncertainties are Monreal who had to come off with a dead leg. Podolski had a little [muscle] problem but I think he will be alright. Then there is Oxlade-Chamberlain and Ramsey (both muscle tightness). They are the main problems.”

The Scout Says: Judging by images taken from the Gunners’ first-team training later in the day, Wenger may have been slightly cautious in his assessment. Ramsey, Koscielny and Podolski were all pictured taking part in the action, raising hopes of their participation ahead of a favourable run of five matches for the north London side. Over 25,000 Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers drafted Ramsey in after he returned from injury last weekend – with Hull, Newcastle, West Brom and Norwich all still to follow, his 19% of FPL owners will be hoping his 113-minute run-out against the Latics hasn’t taken its toll too much.

Nolan Worry for Hammers

The Hammers may have to do without their skipper for this evening’s Emirates trip. Speaking to the press yesterday morning, Sam Allardyce went on to reveal:

“Kevin Nolan is our problem at the moment. He came off with a hamstring against Liverpool, obviously that’s one that we have to be very careful about. It’s unusual for Kevin to sustain a muscle injury, I think it’s the first of his career, but we’ll be very careful about how we handle him. Kevin is going to desperately want to play, so we’ll probably wait until tomorrow to see how he is.”

The Scout Says: Somewhat surprisingly, Nolan is still owned by over 11% of Fantasy managers as we head into the final four Gameweeks. After producing three sets of double-figure displays in four matches over February, he’s since embarked on a run of six appearances without a goal or return. A possible absence tonight may convince many to part company, with a move to Christian Eriksen looking an obvious swap ahead of a run which sees the Hammers face Spurs and City in their final two fixtures.

Hughes Full of Praise for Arnautovic’s Recent Displays

The Potters boss talked up the recent performances of the controversial Austrian, who finally seems to have settled into life in the Premier League:

“It’s fair to say he came with a little bit of baggage, but we were probably exactly what he needed to get out of the environment he found himself in. It’s not easy to come in and have an impact, certainly as a creative player. It’s easier for defensive-minded players. When you are a creative player the onus is on you to win games and that’s more difficult. But once he’s got to grips with it, the second half of the season has been good for the team and good for him.”

The Scout Says: With a goal and two assists in the first five months of the season, it’s fair to say Arnautovic’s initial impact was minimal for the Staffordshire outfit. As Stoke begin to find their feet under Hughes, however, the Austrian has started to deliver with a degree of consistency, chipping in with a goal and six assists from mid-January onwards. Arnuatovic’s assist in the 1-0 win against Newcastle took him to eight for the season – a tally bettered by only five other midfielders and more than double any other Stoke midfield option. With Cardiff, Fulham and West Brom still to play, Hughes’ in-form side are afforded further chance to pick up the points and cement a place in our plans for next term.

Pardew Explains Formation Change

The Newcastle boss discussed his decision to roll out a 3-5-2 tactic for Saturday’s trip to Stoke, as he unsuccessfully attempted to address a run which had seen his side lose the previous three fixtures without finding the net:

“To give the senior players a platform to win the game. And I thought they contributed well to that. We have talked about it, trying this system. We have got an overflow of centre-backs at the moment but are lacking in other areas for sure. I just think we are missing some key players. I know they have heard that. But it does have an impact. When you haven’t scored and you don’t have that confidence in the group. You can argue that we are trying to install that.”

The Scout Says: With first-choice full-backs Mathieu Debuchy and Davide Santon sidelined, the Magpies manager moved away from the usual four-man backline and handed Steven Taylor a rare start. Pardew utilised young left-back Paul Dummett on the left of midfield, with Vernun Anita on the opposite flank, whilst Hatem Ben Arfa was once again deemed worthy of only a sub appearance, in spite of the lack of options. Newcastle have now scored just once in six matches, and whilst few, if any, Fantasy managers will be investing at this stage, their final two home games against Swansea and Cardiff suggest Pardew may yet give the Tyneside fans something to smile about.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is it time we re evaluated defensive/central midfielders?

The defensive/central midfield role has traditionally been much maligned by fantasy managers. These players who break up play, assist the assist and kick start moves have rarely faired well in terms if FPL points.

A key argument has been that the FPL game needs to alter its points, as other games have, to recognise their attributes like blocks and passes.

But this season those arguments have changed with the likes of Toure, Ramsey and Gerrard showing that this central and defensive midfielders can still score highly. Even Matic is racking up assists and Sidwell incredibly has scored this season.

Will this alter your thinking about this group of players next season? Will def/central Mids be on your radar?

Or is this season an anomaly? Last season was after all the season of the attacking Mids, like Cazorla and Michu, but they have performed poorly this season.

Could attacking Mids make a comeback? Or are high scoring defensive Mids here to stay? Is there a change to the way the game is played that is causing more midfielders to score highly?

gerrard is on pens, yaya has had pens for significant periods, ramsey is a box to box midfielder. wouldn't consider matic unless he started scoring.

until there are some points for defensive mids' stats then players like matic will always go under the radar

Gerrard will be terrible value next season. There's no way he'll maintain this level of energy next season in the PL with his main focus being on Champions League.

But the point of FFS is surely to pick the players most likely to get points not just those with the highest ownership.
If Yaya has great starting fixtures and doesn't go up in price much then fair enough, but Both of those are unlikely to occur together. Other options such as a cheap Michu, Ozil or Walcott with form in pre-season are likely to be better picks.

it depends if they are a real Makelele type DMC, if so then they rarely make forays forward. These days many of the DMCs in the prem play in a slightly different position offering more going forward so can be considered much more easily.

So the role is changing and central and defensive midfielders are being asked to be more flexible?

The same happened with a formation shift to 4-3-3 from 4-4-2 a few years back. Suddenly the pool of strikers dropped and attacking mids became the key player to have.

Could we be seeing a shift in formation and style which means defensive mids are now a more viable option?

No, there's a difference between a defensive mid and a deep lying playmaker.

Gerrard / Yaya aren't Makalele types, they're Pirlo / Alonso types.

Lucas / Fernandinho / Flamini etc aren't going to become good options overnight. The holding midfielder will stick around.

I think it is changing. As part of a 4-3-3 or 4-5-1 as it can become there are still 3 midfielders often interchanging, thus with each able to offer some attacking points.

Some are definitely an option, especially in teams that score quite a few goals

Even tough they are getting points..FPL needs to alter it's point system and recognise their attributes..If you notice I have seen Defending mids going forwards and attacking mids taking their place in many attacks..so a switch system has developed..I think this is because of the defending of CB's and DM's have improved...So nowdays it goes like DM passes to CAM..he doesnt find the space to move forward..DM makes the run (so at this point DM becomes AM and AM becomes DM) gets the ball from AM (who is now DM) and gets the assist or goal..Confusing right?

I think it still is an anomaly, although all of those have a partner that lies deeper(e.g. Fernandinho, Arteta) Yaya made a case for himself with free-kicks and benefiting from Agüero being out most of the season for him to score a few penalties, Gerrard the same, has spot-kick duties plus free-kicks and corners, the most interesting from the bunch is indeed Ramsey has he as freedom to bomb forward and be envolved in the attack.

I personally wouldn't call Gerrard or Yaya defensive mids, they might play in a deep position but they're playmakers.

Defensive playmakers (Adam at Blackpool, Yaya at City, Gerrard at Pool, Pirlo at Juve, Alonso at Madrid) are going to get assists and goals, especially seeing as they tend to have set pieces.

But defensive mids like Lucas, Ramires, fernandinho, Matic, Fletcher aren't going to start scoring more points than normal.

They are both roles though that have not been great for FPL in recent years. Ramsey and Wilshire for example have always been poor FPL wise before and I'd class them as central mids. Always the assister of the assister. Is Ramsey an oddity or are we seeing this role actually getting FPL pts now.

Ramsey has come on massively in the last 15 months as a player, he's realising his potential.

Wilshere on the other hand, has stuttered and isn't turning out to be quite as good as people expected. He has no clinical side to his game so he relies on assisting the assister, as with every position there are players that will play more direct than other players

Part of the problem here is a complete misunderstanding of what a defensive mid is.

Makele was a defensive mid. Flamini and Leiva Lucas are defensive mids.

YAYA TOURÉ IS NOT A DEFENSIVE MID. That is Fernandinho.

Gerrard is another box-to-box midfield player, who is deputised to do SOME defensive mid duties.

Matic is an odd one, admittedly. He might just be the best passer in the Premiership.

As said above - I'm talking about central mids as well....usually it was attacking mids and wingers who mopped up pts wise in FPL in years gone by. This year these more central roles are doing well. I was careful not to refer to Yaya as a defensive mid btw.

Box to box midfielders like Yaya Toure and Ramsey have become more of an attacking weapon this season. The attacking midfielders are often closely marked so players likes Ramsey can often find space when they go on a forward run and usually with devastating effect. A lot of the goals I've seen from these players don't require many touches inside the box, they shoot as soon as they receive the ball in space almost as a surprise attack from a successful raid into forward areas.

Of a couple dozen defensive mids you listed three who haved scored a lot of points.
Two of those are on penalties/free-kicks/corners.

And Ramsey I wouldn't consider a defensive mid for Arsenal.

So, other than giving penalties on attacking teams (City/Pool) a lot more credit, I don't think much has changed.

i'd consider gerrard if he played centre back as his playing position is essentially irrelevant. just to give it some numbers to highlight how insane he is:

      13 goals this season : 10 penalties, 2 free kicks, 1 from a corner.
11 assists this season: 4 corners, 4 free kicks, 3 passes (2 of which were played from his own half)
that's 9 points from open play this season, about right for a defensive midfielder which he quite clearly is.

moving on to yaya toure not as extreme at all but his playing position has been largely irrelevant.
18 goals this season: 6 penalties, 4 free kicks, 2 from corners.
no one would own him without those so i think the playing position argument does hold with him yes, he has 20min cameos here and there in attacking positions but anyone who claims to buy him due to these is plucking things out the sky to defend their purchase, no one spends that money for possible cameos here and there.

ramsey didn't cost 9mil like this pair and showed much more attacking intent from the off so i don't think his playing position was ever an issue, he was a good price for his attacking intent. sidwell likewise is so cheap that relative to attacking intent he's somewhat buyable. gerrard and yaya relative to their attacking intent are atrocious buys, but set-pieces do exist so can't be ignored. with gerrard we know he'll always be on penalties, corners, crossed free kicks and the odd direct free kick multiple times a match. with yaya he's not the real penalty taker, has taken 6 free kicks in 31 matches and doesnt take corners or crossed free kicks. both gerrard and yaya have been fortunante to have such extreme set piece numbers, both in double figures for set-piece goals, (something that must happen like once every 10 seasons) but at least in gerrard's case it's all in his hands, not injuries elsewhere.

i hope they don't bring in either a defensive mid category or points for things like recovered balls like in other games. please no, i'd be horrified and likely quit.

don't think this season will alter my thinking, as playing position is still holding true this season like every season. will always consider players who are on penalties and free kicks even if they're deep, but ideally they are A) cheap B) play for a team who at least win penalties (not whittingham or noble).
motto has always been set-pieces should be the icing on the cake, not the cake itself. gerrard has been really stretching that motto, extremes/once in a decade things can do that though. happier to miss out on freak scoring streaks than expected scoring streaks, as the latter feels like a failure in fundamental thinking, the former a failure to ignore fundamental thinking on one occassion.

Still have Yaya, Hazard and Sturridge in my team. Seems at least one of them is dropping in price daily.
Is it worth transferring them for Aguero, Eriksen (+ Mata the following week)?
Can’t see me being able to get them back as I’d have to find an extra 2m in funds - hence the hesitation so far on my part!
Here is my team as it stands:
    Hart, Mannone
    Ivanovic, Cahill, Coleman, Stones, Ward
    Gerrard, Silva, Yaya, Hazard, Johnson
    Lukaku, Sturridge, Suarez.

I would take the point drop. Definitely worth it, I took out hazard 2 weeks a go for Eriksen, he has got me 30 and 18! Mata is also coming into my team next week because of the double game week and at home. I would go Rooney if fit over Aguero personally because easy games at home

I'm planning on the same transfers myself. I can afford the price rises/drops but if I couldn't I would also take the hits. At least you can then add more DGW players in a few weeks time

I don't think Sunderland will make it to 30 points to be honest with you.

Villa could also still go down, although its likely that the ineptitude of the other teams currently below them will save their asses, yet again.

Newcastle, Norwich and Villa could conceivably lose every game from now to the rest of the season the way their form is at present. For Newcastle that won't mean anything. For Villa it could mean something. For Norwich it will almost certainly mean relegation.

Fulham's recent push may not be enough. Strange as it seems, Cardiff have, on paper, as many winnable games than Fulham.

That said, its possible that Fulham could end up conceding over 80 goals this season and still stay up.

Morning all, I'm looking for a bit of advice from you trusty lot.

I'm currently 100 points ahead in my ML and there is quite a bit of money in it for the winner. Second place has Silva and I have Yaya and Nasri. I have been tempted by Aguero for next week but is it a more wise move to copy second place by getting Silva?

      This is my team:

      Mannone Boruc
      Demichelis Azpi Coleman Chester Ward
      Yaya Silva Hazard Puncheon Zaha
      Studge Suarez Lukaku

My current thinking is to do this in the coming weeks: Yaya, Haz, Studge to Eriksen, Mata, Aguero

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The best response for non owners from Pellers regarding Yaya would be : "We think he'll be ok for the WBA game, definitely for the CRY game" so everyone doesn't ditch him for others and then he has a set back in recovery so he doesn't play the rest of the games.

Long time reader - first time poster, as they say.

Really looking for advice this round. My team is

        Cech - Speroni
        Coleman - Shaw - Ward - Azpi - Whittaker
        Yaya - Eriksen - Lallana - Barkley - Delph
        Suarez - Sturridge - Lukaku.

Price dropping daily, and just missed out by 0.1 on being able to do straight transfer of sturridge and yaya for Aguero and Nasri (have 0.1 in the bank). Thinking about these scenarios (all involve selling sturridge and yaya)

        1. sell both and delph, get in aguero, nasri and amalfitano
        2. sell both and cech, get in aguero, mata and begovic/mignolet
        3. Just sell both, get in aguero and cheeky gamble on Kagawa.

        Any thoughts?

Cheers chaps, I agree, it seems his performance against Sunderland may affect this decision.

Wellbeck could be great but I'm worried about the returns of RVP and Rooney, what do you think the risk is one of them will come back for the double?

Ade I'm not so keen on, defenders seemed to be watching him like hawks in the last two games.

        Speroni,Harper
        Azpi,Distin,Smalling,Vlaar,Chester
        Yaya,Silva,Gerrard,Puncheon,Mutch
        Suarez,Aguero,Lukaku

I was thinking about Yaya to Eriksen only if Yaya is not fit..and in next week to get Mata and maybe some Arsenal or City defender

Your pretty mch in the same boat as me.

Toure --> Mata / Eriksen / Salah seem your best moves. Mata seems best with the games that are to come. He'll do alright away to everton i think

yaya ---> eriksen and then you could upgrade lukaku for rvp if he is fit for gw 36-37 fixtures

Maybe, but I'd still take another 8 points this week against Palace.

I understand, but 4 FT till the end of the season are few to be trading injured players...

        Silva, Puncheon, Mirallas, Yaya, Noone

        4.5 in the bank.

Any obvious players i should be getting in? And obvious ones i should be getting rid of?

lol? This isn't my wildcard team, it's my current one i'm gonna change up. And this team has helped me get to top 5k. So don't know where you got the last thing from.
