Team of the Season – Vito Mannone

Snapped up from Arsenal by Paolo Di Canio last summer, the Italian was part of a dramatic first-team overhaul as the Black Cats boss signalled his intent by acquiring 14 new faces over the close-season. Mannone’s prospects looked bleak after his compatriot opted for Kieran Westwood as the Wearsiders’ number one for the opening 10 matches before an injury to the Republic of Ireland international afforded him the chance to impress:

The Statistics

Climbing off the bench to replace Westwood during the first-half of a 1-0 defeat at Hull, Mannone has cemented his role as Sunderland’s keeper of choice with a series of outstanding displays between the sticks. The former Gunner made an immediate impact on Fantasy managers in his first start for the club – having dropped from 4.5 to 4.2 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), his heroics proved vital in helping the Wearsiders to their first clean sheet of the season at home to Manchester City.

The City match set the tone for what was to follow as Mannone racked up 11 clean sheets in 28 starts for the Stadium of Light outfit, with a trio of shut-outs in the final four Gameweeks key to his side’s successful battle against relegation. His back-four hardly made Mannone’s job easy, though – on 20 occasions he earned at least one FPL point due to saves, with a total of 33 save points highlighting just how often he was called into action. Indeed, despite missing those first nine matches, Mannone still finished second for saves – only Cardiff’s David Marshall made more (152 to 131), with the Italian’s 14 stops against Chelsea in Gameweek 35 helping Gus Poyet’s side end Jose Mourinho’s long unbeaten home league run.

Finishing in eighth spot for keepers on 134 points, Mannone picked up more bonus points (16) than any keeper and earned six sets of double figure hauls. Sunderland’s joint-top scoring player in the FPL game, he registered a hugely impressive 4.6 points per game – better than any regular stopper and a sign of his points potential for the upcoming campaign, with a security of starts surely cemented.

The Prospects

Cost-wise, much depends on whether Fantasy games analyse Sunderland’s entire campaign when taking their new prices into consideration. Ultimately, the Black Cats conceded 60 goals in 2013/14 – the fifth worst defence in the Premier League, with only the three relegated clubs and Aston Villa shipping more.

Certainly, a rise in price looks inevitable in light of his displays but if he’s priced too highly, our interest in Sunderland’s defensive options will surely drop. Bearing in mind that Marcos Alonso – with an average of 3.2 ppg – was the club’s top defender, it puts into perspective just how far ahead of his team-mates the Italian proved to be as a Fantasy prospect last time around.

If Mannone comes in around the 5.0-mark, as opposed to 5.5, it’s likely he’ll be the default keeper for many next time around. With six shut-outs at home and five on the road, there was no obvious pattern for those looking to rotate on a home/away basis and given his propensity for picking up the save points, many may choose to simply field the Black Cats stopper as their regular number one due to his consistent ability to deliver the points and perhaps partner him with a cut-price option as back-up.

Srna and Mandzucik are worth it imo.

Olic is ok if he can get a starting place, which is quite possible if he performs well against Brazil (Mandzucik banned for 1st game).

Fifa World Cup game top tips

The Fifa McDonalds World Cup fantasy game has now opened for registration. Teams can be selected from June 8. Crucially the rules have been laid out and will be familiar to those who have played the McDonalds international games and UEFA champions League games before.

    Here's a link - http://en.mcdonalds.fantasy.fifa.com/

It's a good idea to look over the rules.

Thought this would be a good chance for those familiar with this format to offer their top tips for success.

The biggest factor for the first three rounds is to spread your team across the fixtures making sure your subs can slot in to cover previous scores , it ain't all about having the top players from each team early on it's about points and being able to adapt to the fixtures to dispose of previous poor scores.
Captain choices as usual will be crucial so look at the fixtures and make sure you have the right sequence of cover on if scores aren't realised.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news:

(Unless I have mis-read the rules):

        -No captain switching during matchdays.
-Subs can be made during matchday only if player HASN'T played. (i.e. was rested, or you think they won't play full 90 mins or w/e, so you can sub them out in advance for someone later in the matchday)

TLDR: IT'S NOT THE SAME RULES AS THE EURO's/PREVIOUS WC (IIRC).

                  Example:

                  Wayne Rooney (C).

                  Bench: Messi

-Rooney trips and falls over in warm up as he was laughing at Roy's hairdo in Manuas (sp?) heat. He is injured and might only come on a sub, if at all.
-You: "Shit! Roon you goon! Right, I'm not risking him only playing 5 minutes, I'll swap to Messi (who has yet to play).

                  ************

Essentially a unlikely scenario, but the only use of this pointless system.

Hi Ed - I read this as if your sat player scores poorly you can then bring in your Sunday player and so on , each team only plays once in each round anyway and I'm presuming if you transfer out your (c) you can replace him with a player that hasn't played , but I'm not 100% of this by reading the rules ,
I am using the UFPL as reference here ed.

Only useful in group stages where you can use transfers...

Will be painful having 12 players on the bench that might outscore your starting 11....

These 12 can then be used for MD2 & 3 (group stages) to rotate players in who you think will fare better.

After that, squad of 23 is pointless (unless your 11 (who you can transfer in for free) gets injured in warm up, day before match?)

looks lyk defender is a good prospect imo if the price is relatively friendly

      1) less rotation and >60min
      2) recovered ball...blocked shot...pass completion rate

it does look to me that strikers beside the advantage of higher scoring /assist chance the rules favour the defenders more

1 point for every recovered ball sounds like a lot. Wasn't it 1 point for every 3 in other games?

Good DMs can make around 10 RBs per game, can't they? Makes DMs very desirable. Or have I got my numbers wrong?

23 man squad and no transfers until the knockouts? Also points for RBs and crosses etc. Interesting. More UFPL than UCL.

bit worried about this : "Please note that your team and any changes you make will save automatically. There is no save button."

Did I understand it right? Means that whatever you change in your team can't be undone?

Does that mean no more tinkering?

"You can modify your squad throughout the season in the transfer market. The transfer market is opened during the official rest days of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™"

Does that mean that you can only make transfers on days when there are no games?

      Seems a bit restrictive..

Doesn't make any sense : if you follow this rule, it means the only days when you can make transfers are :
          27th June
          02-03 July
          06-07 July

Is it me or are the scoring rules a bit daft?

      Yellow card -1
      Red card (straight red) -3

So if a player gets a red card for a second booking, you only get -2 (-1 x 2)?
And if a player has already been booked and then gets a straight red (happens), does he get -4 (-1 + -3)?????

Probably more bad wording on their part.

        The rule will (should) be:

        2 yellows = -3
        Straight red =-3
        Yellow + Straight red =-3

It normally doesn't matter how you are sent off.

I don't see why it couldn't be that way as well.

It would actually reflect better the fact that direct red card is considered as worse than two yellows, therefore automatically earning a longer suspension. That taking a yellow card and a red card is worse than taking two yellows, or just the red, is obvious. And if it is sanctioned more in fantasy football, that's only fair.

Apparently the values of players will not fluctuate this time - that's a massive difference. Last time it was possible to play the market and make big profits on team value, as there was no 50% sell on rule.

I suppose we just have to wait and see how much all our Bargain Basement players from 2013-2014
    will be next year.
I know in Metro the cheap defenders were the only thing that made half the top midfielders or strikers affordable. Metro being the tightest budget for top players of any game I played.

I'll be looking at two cheap rotating goalkeepers - ideally two 4.5s...but I'm ok with a 5m one. Not keen on spending more than that though in the first few weeks as this year there is going to be much more choice in the top price bracket.

I think Barkley was the cheapest best that slipped through at £5mil. otherwise 7-7.5 seemed about as cheap as it got. Strikers were bonkers prices.

No matter Jonty, we'll do it again. As long as the game continues.

Match day 1 = 1 fixture for Brazil / eng etc , they all play on differant days say ,
      Let's simplify this :
      - you can transfer a player out for a player that hasn't played (round 1)
      - surely if this player is your (c) you can also move your (c) to a player that hasn't played in round 1 , or is this point the opposite ?

Your team captain, which you can change for each round, will score double points. If you fail to select a captain then no player will score double points.

Agree, but if you decide to change the player you initially had as (c) before he plays, do you not think that you will be able to place the (c) on some other player who hasn't played yet?

In any case, I'd probably captain Suarez for the first round, and then maybe someone has figured out how this works by round 2.

Depends on coding. Could easily be locked into a captain when the Brazil game starts.
You should be able to pick an upcoming captain. Once your 1st pick as captain plays, that option disappears from what I am seeing. Not sure you can even sub him out if that was even possible.

Agree , this is messy .
16 games = round 1 and so on
But surely matcdday scenarios will kick in ?
ie moving players from your 23 man squad on a daily basis and I take your (c) choice will be moveable on a match day scenario as well .

Hard to tell really. If not, you have to pick your captain carefully. On the other hand, since you can only change players that haven't played yet I guess you would only want to change your (c) if he gets injured before he has played (or if you suddenly regret your initial decision after folding under the pressure of opinion on this site).

IMHO if they haven't played you can change them and I think the ( c ) scenario will be the same , that's why we have a 23 man squad.
The rules are not clear either way for me yet but hopefully they follow a UFPL mindset and it's simple enough from there.

He's right though. World Cup is a shitty little tournament with atrocious refereeing and unplayable ball that tired players play in awful conditions on stadiums built by enslaved poor locals who can't even get to see a match.

Should we exert a bit of community pressure on FPL to include more prizes?

I think at least 2nd and 3rd place should get runner up prizes and maybe a little something for the best performing manager of each month.

For the amount of clicks and page views they get from us they could really put a bit more effort into the prizes! I have noticed the world cup game has prizes for the top 10 overall and the top 3 of each round. Much better way to incentivise engagment IMO

Anyone noticed the issue on June 17th, Brazil play their second game before Russia v Korea (Group H), so in effect GW2 starts before GW1 has finished!

What does this mean in terms of changing captain for GW 2 / sorting your squad?

Not very hands on at all. Probably a good thing, I don't want to spend a month stressing over another fantasy game.
No transfers during group stages at all. Can't make substitutions during rounds at all, despite having a huge squad of 23 players. Can't substitute captain. Scoring seems to favour defensive players.

With a squad of 23, I expect everyone will have lots of cheapies who will forever be on the bench.

I wonder if there is any merit in entering half way through the first round? You will be able to get good players in for the later games in he round and have a feel for how the points scoring is shaping up.

One of the lessons learned this season is to not let stubbornness get in the way of getting a player in.

I don't know why, but I didn't want to get Mannone. Lost me some valuable points.

Instead, I went for the mighty McGregor. 😯

That stubbornness probably saved you lots of pints by not going for other failed wagons though. I don't think there is any player that is essential unless there is someone like suarez with a huge ppg average and huge ownership as he will invariably be the no1 captain pick too.i had yaya for three gws this year, missed out on most of Ramsey points, never had hazard or Coleman and still managed a respectable 3.1k.

I guess what I am trying to say is sticking to your guns and following the logical picks is not necessarily a flaw imo

    WC Shopping List

    1) Shot stopping keeper from a team that will concede a lot of shots from outside the box
    2) Defenders that have high RBs and crosses
    3) DMs with high RBs
    4) AMs that get the ball into the box (6 balls into the box = an assist)
    5) 2 good forwards
    6) 2 floating players from DEF/MID
    7) 3 cheap floaters

    Squad strategy
    Round 1-3: 20 players, 3 cheapies

        Correct.

Let's compare defender (who just gets clean sheet and does him job) vs Striker (who scores 2 goals)

        Defender
        90 mins: 3 points
        CS: 4
        1 block (conservative): 2
2 balls into penalty area: 1
        Balls recovered 10: 10
        3 fouls: -1
        = 19 points

        Striker
        90 mins: 3
6 balls into penalty area: 3
        Balls recovered 3: 3
        Goals x2: 10
        = 19 points.

I'd say I was harsh on the defender and kind to the attacker too...

      1) Aussie keeper. Federici? 😆
      2)
      3) Busquets

      6)

I've sent this message to FIFA, I will let you know if they respond and what they say:-

    Hi

I have read the rules for the forthcoming fantasy World Cup and feel that there is quite a bit of confusion. Can you confirm whether these rules are likely to change before the game opens for real?

Also is there any possibility you will open the game up earlier than the advertised date to allow people to set up provisional squads. Five days doesn't give much time for setting up teams or producing and promoting mini leagues.

Thanks for at least giving it a go and I look forward to hearing from you

        Hi Ronald

Thanks for the voucher, it says I can substitute it once per round for a cup of tea but only during rest days is this correct and when are rest days?

From what I can see, this is how it works:

      - You pick 11 players per round (i.e. 3 rounds in the groups) . The other 12 cannot be used unless you wish to swap around players that have yet to play. (Doesn't make it clear if this includes players whose team played but they themselves didn't)

      - No transfers during the group stages. You have to pick 23 players before the games have kicked off and keep those 23 until the knockout stages.

      - Captain choices are fixed per round. You get 3 captain choices in the Groups and that's it. There doesn't appear to be a VC option. If you get your captain choice wrong, that's it.

      - Auto-subs will happen at the end of each round.

I think there will be manual subs and the rules have just been written incorrectly, I think the first "has not" in the line below should just be a "has"

You can change every player in your line-up that has not already played during the current round for any other relevant player in your squad that hasn’t already played.

Oh and if a player you selected does play and scores horribly, you can't sub him out for a player yet to play. (Quite important, that.)
