Team of the Season – Steven Gerrard

Written off by many as a legitimate Fantasy prospect after a couple of very average seasons for Liverpool, Steven Gerrard rolled back the years in Brendan Rodgers’ first year at the Anfield helm. The Liverpool skipper racked up 185 points in 2012/13 – his highest haul in four seasons – and was resultantly handed a 9.0 price tag as the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game got underway last summer:

After a sluggish first few weeks, Gerrard began to find his form and proceeded to serve up the points with a remarkable consistency. In spite of his deep-lying role in front of the back-four, the midfielder went on to produce a goal or assist in 21 of his 33 starts and finished the campaign on 205 points; third in the overall standing behind only Luis Suarez and Yaya Toure.

The Statistics

The campaign started slowly for Gerrard. With Suarez suspended for the first five fixtures, the Reds captain failed to pick up a single return as Rodgers’ side relied on Daniel Sturridge to grab the goals. Dropping to 8.9 in price, he was mainly overlooked as Fantasy managers opted for one, or even both, of Liverpool’s frontmen, as Suarez’ return to the fold saw Rodgers’ side rack up the goals.

With the Uruguayan in the starting XI, Gerrard’s prospects instantly improved as he embarked on a run which saw him produce returns in nine of his first 10 starts alongside the South American. A brief four-Gameweek injury absence over December saw Gerrard’s price drop back down to 8.7 but, upon his return, he wasted no time in maintaining his previous exploits, going on to produce points in 12 of the final 18 Gameweeks.

Despite his outstanding season, Gerrard never rose above 9.6 in FPL. A total of eight 10+ hauls underlines his explosive potential, though it’s fair to say that few handed him the Fantasy armband due to Suarez’ exploits up top. With 13 goals, 15 assists and 30 bonus points to his name, Gerrard played a pivotal part in his side’s second place finish, whilst his contributions from the centre of the park persuaded many to load up on Liverpool’s assets in a season that saw Rodgers’ free-scoring side notch 101 times over the course of the league campaign.

The Prospects

A price hike will surely be on the cards after such an impressive year last time round. Gerrard, Suarez and Sturridge can all be expected to cost us more in 2014/15 and with many keen to snap up the South American regardless of price, his skipper is likely to remain relatively under the radar.

With Champions League football back on the menu, though, there’s a fear that Gerrard’s game time will perhaps be managed a little more by Rodgers next season. Bearing in mind he will be 34 years of age at the end of this month, he’s more likely to be prone to rotation than the more youthful trio of Raheem Sterling, Philippe Coutinho and Jordan Henderson as a result of the busy schedule – reports last month claiming that Gerrard has been playing through the pain barrier with a heel problem merely strengthen this theory.

The Merseysiders have only been concerned by domestic duties since the Northern Irishman arrived and, as a result, their first XI has been more consistent than most – it’s likely that we will see the Reds boss utilise the depth of his squad next term, with a handful of acquisitions over the summer to boost his options in key positions.

There’s also the question of penalties. Ten of Gerrard’s 13 goals came courtesy of the spot in 2013/14 and you surely have to wonder whether Liverpool will benefit from such consistency once again. On the positive side, though, Gerrard will be the only premium midfielder who is first-choice spot-kick taker for his side – both Yaya Toure and Eden Hazard still rely on Sergio Aguero and Frank Lampard’s respective absences for City and Chelsea.

Nonetheless, as Gerrard has shown in both seasons under Rodgers’ guidance, Liverpool’s swashbuckling approach looks tailor-made for his Fantasy prospects. With Suarez and Sturridge wreaking havoc up front and Martin Skrtel’s aerial presence at set-pieces and corners proving key, Gerrard’s creativity has delivered 27 assists under Rodgers and, in spite of his advancing years, there’s plenty more still left in the tank judging by last term’s displays. Whether he can provide us with the same sort of value and keep the likes of Sterling in the shade is another matter entirely.

Mcdonalds would be most popular if not for the fact that it doesnt open until 8th June which renders it almost useless.

Im not keen to do a paid for game as I want to create a mini league and have a prize fund and a paid for game only reduces that prize pot.

Of the free games that are now open to select your team, create mini leagues etc. the only other 2 I have found are:

Re: Shaw - i think chelsea and City will also go for him and therefore I cant see him ending up at Utd unless they offer sillly money (£30m+)

Hummels is a fair shout, they will defo get another CB in and they will need to be good, seriously good if Utd are to do anything next season. I have never been that impressed with Hummels when I have watched him.

Hummels is very very good I assure you but I don't think he'll leave. Or at least I've seen no indication from him that he wants out.

In the CM, still not sure on Kroos. I think Song and Carvalho are a possibility.

Shaw, well that's anyone's guess but he'll be aware he needs plenty of games which United can offer him.

I think if Kroos was using Utd as a bargaining tool to get a better deal from Bayern then it would of been done by now, this has been going on for ages now. Lots of alternatives to Kroos anyway, Fabregas, Song, Strootman, Clasie, Vidal.

Shaw deal is near enough done to Utd, they just need to agree a free. City can't afford 30mil on new left back when they can only spend 49mil net.

I'm not a big fan of Hummels, seems that LvG is though, I would prefer Vermalean or Vertonghen with prem experience

The way Arsenal celebrated that FA Cup win, with a street parade was embarrassing. Fans going crazy, as if it was some unbelievable achievement.

Small time, an indictment of how Arsenal are now a 2nd tier club compared to the real big boys, of which yes, despite this past season, I class United a member.

I didn't say the FA Cup was a small trophy, but IMO it doesn't justify a street parade of the type Arsenal held.

I'm also not bitter in the slightest about Arsenal winning it, or celebrating it - just commenting that it was 'over-celebrated' and perhaps shows where Arsenal's mentality is nowadays........10-15 years ago, an FA Cup win would not have got this reaction from the Gooners.

      There's more..

Yaya Toure's agent says Manchester City's attempt to mark the midfielder's birthday with a tweet was "a joke".

"None of them shook his hand on his birthday. It's really sick you know," Seluk told BBC Sport.

Seluk says Toure did not expect a present after turning 31 on 13 May but was unhappy at being ignored by the club's wealthy owners when the squad arrived in the United Arab Emirates last week to celebrate their Premier League title triumph.

"He got a cake but when it was Roberto Carlos's birthday, the president of Anzhi gave him a Bugatti," Seluk added.

"I don't expect City to present Yaya with a Bugatti, we only asked that they shook his hand and said 'we congratulate you'. It is the minimum they must do when it is his birthday and the squad is all together."

"It is an important human relationship to shake hands and say 'happy birthday' but nobody did it to Yaya. It shows they don't care about him."

"I hear one newspaper has written that City congratulated him from Twitter but this is a joke. It is better they don't put anything on Twitter if they are not saying anything to him."

"The club's owners ate a 100kg cake after winning the Premier League this season but when they and the players were all together, none of them shook his hand on his birthday."

Seluk enjoys a close relationship with the Ivory Coast international, who named his second child after his advisor.

The Ukrainian added: "If they don't respect him, then easy - Yaya will leave. No problem."

          ian mcgarry:
"i was told that in a meeting of the coaching staff of manchester united last summer, before the season started they were maing plans to buy players and of course round the table were moyes jimmy something, chris woods, steve round, phil neville, and ryan giggs. and the subject for discussion was thiago alcantara, for whom a deal had been concluded and all they were waiting for was a medical to be signed off. and david moyes giving his coaches their heads said what do you think? he went round the table and when he got to giggsy who was last he said, "not a manchester united player." and moyes said, "i'm sorry i don't know what you mean by that." he says "he's not a manchester united player." he says, "can you please explain that to me then. he looked at phil neville and phil sort of nodded his head. "look, playing for this club is more than being a footballer, it's about your attitude, it's about your mindset, it's about everything you want, every cell in your body needs to want to live for and win for manchester united. i don't think he's a manchester united player." and they immediately called off the transfer. now that's a very big say for a new assistant coach, but you know, that was what happened."

That rules out any new signings for utd this summer then as long as Giggs has a say.

The only players that will have a club loyalty to utd are the ones that come through the youth system. You don't look for Utd players or Chelsea players or any players of the description that Giggs gave you look for character traits such as determination to succeed and people with the right attitude that will fit in with the Philosophy of the manager. Giggs needs to get his head out of his arse (or his brothers wife's arse or wherever else it may be) and realise there is no such thing as a Manchester United player.

don't worry LvG won't listen to Giggs on transfer targets. It's nice to have someone there from the old guard with a link to players etc.. but LvG knows best, and he won't take advice from young upstarts! (those will be his views btw)

Stoke played defensive football and long ball under Pulis and Hughes changed them, so the notion that it is impossible to get West Ham playing better football is nonsense.

Hughes brought in Arnautovic, Odemwingie, Assidi in the process. It's not like West Ham are an impoverished club. Jarvis, Carroll, Downing, Maiga all cost a bob or two.

You don't have to play crap football.

Fair enough, but look at what happens when Allardyce leaves a club, they get relegated. I think he gets the best out of a bad bunch of players. I loved watching Bolton when he was there with Djorkaeff and Okocha.

I am not his biggest fan but I think West Ham fans are on dangerous ground wanting him out.

But Newcastle brought in who? Keagen? Hughton? Shearer? Then you got an actual manager in Pardew (pretty average) and you did really well. Either way, no club will make any progress under Sam, and the fans will be miserable all the time.

Bolton made amazing progess under Sam.

Arguably West Ham have too. They need to be established in the premier league. Once they do this they can think about gettting players in to play more dynamic football. If they get relegated they are screwed from a financial POV with the new stadium coming.

If I was running West Ham I would keep Sam on until they are in the new stadium then maybe look for a new manager.

My take is if they are going to open the game on 20 July for example, the I don't mind player prices released prior to it, but if it means delaying the launch of the game then hell no.
Also, I would like it if they released a price every few hours for a few days before the launch, although the f5 button would hate that

No I just want it opened as soon as possible.

Same with this World Cup one and why I dont think I will end up doing the Fifa Mcdonalds one.

We need to time to select our team and more importantly create and build our mini leagues. They need to understand this.

No, I would prefer if they launched it early July to allow for people to set up mini leagues etc.

I think the season before last year was too close to the actual first game of the season and if they could get it up and running first week in July it would be great (but unlikely).

To clarify (sorry) I love player price release early. The game itself should open a month before official games kick off (I have no idea when they usually launch)

That's what I want as well. The earlier the game opens, the better. What I refer to is if they are defo going to open it on 20 July then price releases before hand would be good

Id rather they concentrate on getting the game out ASAP.

The drip release of player prices is because they are fannying about and trying to placate us.

Don't you find that more enjoyable Funkyav? (Regarding early price release)

The game coming out to early (in my opinion) spoils the excitement & the talk. Especially this year being a WC summer.

The (potential) good news for us fpl managers is the real life teams will want to do their transfer business done asap before the WC begins, so could have good idea of what teams first 11s will look like give or take, it'll be the big money transfers (as standard) that we'll maily be looking out for that'll go on throughout summer :-\

Celtic sold Hooper, Ledley and Wanyama to the PL over the past year. IMO only one of the three actually impressed.

Wanyama (albeit suffered a few injuries) had a poor season. He has the ability to be Viera-esque one game and then disappear completely for in the next three. He has so much potential he just needs the right manager to point him in the right direction. Maybe it was the high expectations but he didnt impress me and the 12m price tag was a bit excessive. 5/10

Hooper, despite playing for Norwich he rarely got a chance with the Canaries opting to play RvW which says a lot. In Scotland he was banging in goals for fun as he was poaching (similar to Kris Boyd) even with that bit of extra pace he couldnt get used to how deep Nowich played and was a poor signing. Not even the key passes from Snodgrass could help this lost cause. He might do well in the Championship next year but hes not a PL striker. 3/10

Ledley. Now despite moving in January I think Ledley had the biggest impact. Despite having 14 starts he is null and void as a fantasy option however his pass completion rate was over 80% which is what really matters. Yes, they might not be defence splitting passes but he kept it sort and simple which is just what CP needed. Great business by Pulis. 8/10

I always watch how players adapt from the SPL to the PL/Championship and more often then not im disappointed. Gone are the days of Gio, Arteta, Larsson, Petrov, Tugay ect but there is still an abundance of talent up here and at a smidgen of the price.

I'd agree with you I think when Wanyama and Sneijderlin played together Southampton were at their best. Saints had 10 clean sheets in the 18 games he played more than 45 minutes in last season and only 5 clean sheets in the other 20 games 😮

Southampton got 33 of their 56 points in the 18 games Wanyama played greater than 45 minutes in and only 23 points in the other 20 games. In other words if Wanyama had stayed fit they would have been on for a 70pt season instead of a 56pt season.

Imo Wanyama was an unqualified success and should kick on even more next season if they can keep the team together.

The one I would agree on is Hooper and the reason he didn't do so well is he didn't play often enough imo. He was always overrated imo but he got 96 fpl points from 2020 minutes, if you pro-rata this out to a full season that is circa 160pts. Not a great success but for 5m hardly a failure either?

              I'd say Wanyama 9/10, Hooper 6/10, Ledley 8/10

Wanyama is the best player to have played in Scotland since Henrik Larsson. He just strolled the league up here because he was that good. He was even immense for us in Europe against some class opposition, which showed to me that he was capable of playing at a higher level.

I think he was the kind of player both Arsenal and Man United needed this year and was surprised they did not come in for him as he is a steal at 12M as he has the ability to go on and become one of the top defensive midfielders in the world.

Not many midfielders can claim to have kept Xavi and Inniesta quiet. 😉

I rate Wanyama at about 7/10. At the start of the season he was immense and his injury coincided with Southampton leaking goals. When he came back from injury he looked OK but not as good as he did earlier in the season. No disrespect to Southampton but he is capable of playing at a higher level.

Hooper probably give 5/10 as he has not really been given a chance and was playing for a poor Norwich team who underperformed this season. Looked OK in spells but still has to prove himself at this level. Probably a top Championship player or bottom of Premiership.

Ledley would give 6/10. Has done well since arriving in the EPL but think there is more to come from him. Very underrated player by the fans but one the managers value.

aye getting knocked out in the round of 16 is really getting to me...

its just a collective sigh of relief that the monkey is off our back, and we know this is just a starting point for hopefully better things...

the mentality is still questionable...they are never up for big games for some bizarre reason and really only because it was hull were we able to claw it back on Saturday...worrying signs still

but hey, its something to be happy about for us 🙂

could well be a significant victory for the gunners mate and if im totally honest was pleased in a way to see it.. If wenger can finally address the issues regarding the spine of his team then arsenal really could be a force to be reckoned with next year... and by that i mean some brute force as opposed to technical brilliance but lightweight players right through the core of the side

we do need to sign some quality though, otherwise ill be worried

right back, centre back, goalkeeper, defensive midfielder, wide forward, striker

that's whats required to make sure the squad is deep in all areas, and hopefully some of these players are world class
