World Cup 2014 – Introducing FantasyiTeam

After getting our World Cup analysis underway with yesterday’s look at Brazil’s main men and Cameroon earlier today, it’s time to give you a heads-up on some of the games we’re going to be playing during the tournament. Fantasy iTeam were one of the first to swing open their doors and we’re delighted to say that we’ll be supporting their World Cup game during the summer.

FantasyiTeam is a free Fantasy football app that’s available on a number of mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad, iPodTouch and Android. It’s been around since the last World Cup and we’ve been discussing an opportunity to work with their team ever since.

With so many of you accessing this site and other apps on your mobile or tablets, the World Cup is the perfect opportunity for us to jump on board – set up a league and try the game out within the community. As mentioned, the game is up and running, nice and slick and proven over a number of seasons with a dedicated following.

Fantasy iTeam is free to download and play, you can already go in and start drafting up your starting XI with unlimited transfers and, with a £500 Amazon voucher on offer to the Fantasy Football Scout league winner, there’s no reason not to get involved.

We’ve already tinkered and set up an official Fantasy Football Scout league for you to join – the league name is Fantasy Football Scout and the pin is 4915.

What’s more, the game is littered with decent prizes should you find yourself challenging at the very top. Finish first overall and you win a trip a trip of a lifetime to share with your mates, worth £5,000, whilst the highest scoring manager of every Gameround (there are seven in total) wins a £250 Amazon voucher.

The FantasyiTeam game also uses fluctuating player prices based on the transfer market, making it a wise idea to follow the movers and shakers – the team with the highest value by the end of the tournament wins another £500 Amazon voucher.

If you’ve been itching to commit to a World Cup game and you’ve got a compatible device, then there’s really no reason not to click here for the official website and download the app.

We’ll be ramping up our coverage of the game and our league over the next week or so. We’ll start by giving the Fantasy iTeam rules a good grilling, before following up with a scan of their player list for potential bargains.

The worst thing about this, as me and Jonty just found out, is that you can only join one league!

Was just wondering how your team was shaping up, it's worth noting Brazil play twice in the first stage and that transfers can be made in the middle of a GW, like I plan to do Messi to Ronaldo after Messi has played. Quite similar to the Sky game.

10 teams per account. Your first team is free, each additional will cost 220 F/c - which works out at anywhere between £1-£1.50 depending on the in-game currency package that is bought.

As Brazil have 2 games in the first round, what happens if I transfer out my captain(i.e Neymar) after his first game for Ronaldo then back to Neymar before his 2nd game? Will both players receive double points? Or both of Neymar's games? Or just his first?

Crazy scheduling by our friends at FIFA. The beauty of their failure is you can ship out your DGW players for Russian's or South Korean's and head into GR2 with a full team - this might be a viable tactic.

Not too sure I like the idea of having Russians or Koreans in my team 😕

I'm thinking a straight up Neymar to Messi and keeping Messi & Ronaldo up front until they get knocked out.

It's a tough one. The most popular FiT tactic usually involves sticking with your starting defence and midfield, and using the live transfers to rotate your forwards. Obviously injuries, rotation and suspensions mean this isn't always possible.

And we have Messi & Ronaldo. Plus with so many good sides, it's hard to cover all sides, especially those with a tricky opening fixture(Spain vs Holland, Germany vs Portugal), you don't want to be chasing from the off.

Why in particular Russians and South Koreans, what is the advantage? Do they have a 2nd round DGW? Isn't the first game of the 2nd round the Australia vs Netherlands?

Because they play last in GR1. So, it means you're not stuck with Brazilians and Mexicans who have no game in GR2.

If you go into GR2 with say 3 players from Brazil, you're going to end up fielding 11 or 12 players. If you use your GR1 transfers to take out 3 Brazilians for say 3 Russians, you can then field 14-15 players in GR2.

I see, thanks. Am I right in thinking that I couldn't transfer out the 3 Brazilians for an Argentinian and two Spaniards after the Brazil game but before game week 1 ends? That way I would play 14 players but I guess I can't bring in a player in a game week if they've already played. Haven't come across this format before.

That is another viable tactic. You can bring in whoever you want, whenever your want, you just miss out on the Argentinian/Spanish GR1 points by bringing them in after they've played. By doing it the way you suggested you will sacrifice having more players in GR1 but be set up well for GR2.

It's certainly a weird one, Brazil play Mexico just before the Final Group H game, so it comes into the first round, I suppose the 3 free transfers afterwards will be used to get Ronaldo in for Neymar etc.

Neymar would receive double points for both games. Just make sure Neymar is back in your team at least 10 minutes before the 2nd game.

I'm still deciding between Neymar or Fred... A FiT Fred (sorry) is lethal..

Every 6 hours, from 7am. It's based on a few things, but it's in the users hands. The main factor is popularity, so if a player performs well but for some strange reason he is ignored by the masses, his value might actually go down.

Every 6 hours, from 7am. The player prices won't fluctuate massively. The biggest thing that confuses people is the fact that great players who have just scored a massive points haul will go down in price sometimes due to our transfer system. Example:

Argentina play before Portugal in GR1.

Messi scores a hat-trick but thousands sell him so they can buy Ronaldo who plays the day after. Messi will start to lose value and obviously Ronaldo will start to increase.

I hope that makes some sense...

I know it has been touched on, but I'm still a little confused about the captaincy.

      1) If you captain a player, then transfer him out for another player after his game, does the player you transferred in earn double points as well? I think I've gathered no, but just thought I'd check.

      2) Can you pick a captain who doesn't start the week in your squad? Imagine I want to captain Messi GW1, but start the week with Suarez and transfer Messi in after Suarez's game. Can I captain Messi? And when would I be able to do that time wise?

Depending on the answers to those, I'll probably have some follow up questions 😀

      Thanks in advance.

        1) Correct, the transferred player just scores normal points, it's not like Sky Sports.

        2) You can deselect your captain choice at any time during the round. Your captain is locked in 10 minutes before a game starts, once locked in you cannot change.

        1. nope, youll only get double points for the player you captained

        2. yes you can transfer a player in and captain them, the only requirement is that they're transferred in and captained 10 minutes before kick-off. For you to get points for the transferred out player they must be in your team at the kick-off of their game.

Yeah I can. I'm sure on a tablet it's much easier, but I'm using a Nexus 4 phone (decent size screen) and the scrolling is still a bit of a chore. Once my team is set up I'm sure it will great though.

It's unlimited up until 10 minutes before the first game kicks off. We need to do this as the final squads haven't been released yet, plus it's fun to tinker. After kick off, transfers are limited. Everyone gets a wildcard type option after the group stages finish.

One of our coaches has written a great blog to help combat the budget restriction - http://thefantasyiteamblog.tumblr.com/post/86205364588/world-cup-hidden-gems-by-rob-wright

We didn't want cookie cutter teams though, hence us being a bit tight. Plus our PlayerDAQ means your iTeam will get better as the tournament progresses.

I played a fantasy iTeam premier league game a couple of years back for about half a season. The interface was pretty decent though there was an option to buy transfers for about £1 each (you could sell Saturday players for Sunday players and get points from both) so it wasn't very interesting in overall rank if you were playing for free and it took away much of the skill element of fantasy football. Don't know if their games still work like that.

It's still very similar. We've introduced Free Credit Comps, a Quiz, and recruit a friend, to try and help people win/earn credits without the need for paying. But, yes, you're right. Overall Leaderboard wise, you're going to be at a disadvantage if you don't use an extra transfer each round. You are limited to one additional transfer per round at the cost of anywhere between 46p -69p depending on the package bought.

I remember an option where you could challenge other players to a H2H and bet some of your transfer budget on it. Quite liked that, was a fun way of gaining team value.

Yeah that's still there, you can also play for credits (over 18) which makes it a bit more fun for some people. Everyone gets a bonus H2H allocated to them each round, the winner receiving 200k to help with the team budget.

We're not for everyone. But, we do have plenty of massive mini leagues that are set up for people who want to play against others who don't use emergency transfers. Approx 40% of our weekly/round winners are teams that only use the free transfers, so there's still something to play for.

I've been playing FiT for 2 seasons now and i've found that the transfer system doesn't take away from the skill. It actually makes it harder and adds another element to the game. You actually have to pay attention to fixture times and when games are played in order to take advantage of the mid-gameweek transfers. I've found it's also more fun being able to make transfers throughout the gameweek rather than setting a team at the beginning and just waiting.

2 clean sheets in 14 games under Monk, funny as you would think a Monk would be expert in clean sheets 😮

It could just be because Swansea were coasting with nothing to play for but with a new manager taking over he should have been able to get a bit more of a bounce out of the players than that imo.
