Having had a good read through the ever changing rules, here is my quick guide to the Fifa Official game, highlighting key points scoring and rules as well as some of its ambiguities.

The Basics

You get £100m to select 23 man squad with 3 per team cap on selection.

You must select 11 players to start each round and only those players that remain on the pitch score points…therefore select the 11 which are due to play their matches first, if the player doesn’t score well you sub him out and replace with a player from the bench. It is not clear, however, if you can change the formation through the round.

Example – you start Neymar, he scores two points, you can choose to remove with Lukaku who plays later in the round. You lose the two points and get any points Lukaku scores.

There is no clear confirmation that the captaincy can be moved around the squad independently of subbing him out for a player on the bench, but this seems to be expected.  If this is confirmed it would be suggested you place your captaincy on a player that plays early in the round. Example – Fred is Captain scores six points and therefore a further six as captain = total 12, you fancy Benzema would outscore so can switch the captaincy, losing the six captaincy points.

Points

In addition to the usual points (5 points for a goal & 3 points for an assist) a few key area’s to consider:
Goalkeeper = 1 point each save / blocked shot
Defender /Mid / Striker = 2 point each save / blocked shot
Defender = 1 point for every 2 recovered balls
Midfielders = 1 points for every recovered ball
All = 1 point every 2 balls DELIVERED into the penalty area (no confirmation on successful only)
All = -1 point for every 3 fouls

* Recovered Balls – no clear definition how this will be calculated

There are also bonus points
1 point if GK has a save rate >80%
1 point if Defender or Midfielder has a pass completion rate >80%
1 point if Striker has goal attempts >80%

So the Goalkeeper could be a real point magnet but what of a combative midfielder that likes a long ball / set peice…..imagine Steven Gerrard v Italy 2 blocked shots = 4 pts, 4 recovered balls = 4pts, 8 balls delivered into the box = 4 pts played 90 mins = 3pts and 92% pass completion = 1pt. Game ends 1v1 he gets 15points!

Should make squad selection really interesting but also the captaincy as a striker would need a brace and assist to get near that point total.

Great article Bonz! Exactly why Gerrard is in my McD's team.

So who are the best ball-recovering midfielders? Gerrard, Busquets, who else?

I think Box-to-box mids are the ones to own in McD game. Paulinho, Yaya, Marchisio, Pogba, Cabaye, Di Maria, Moutinho could all be good

It's tempting to see your line-up now 🙂

And at the same time it still feels veeeery risky to swap Ozil or Rodriguez for Paulinho, etc.

Therefore, would it be a good idea to swap either Ozil, J-Rod or Maria to a cheaper Busquets - who'll 'score' 8 RBs - and upgrade a filler to RB specialist Fayzulin?
